In this special episode of Ask This Old House, Tom Silva and Kevin O’Connor explain everything you need to know about using, installing, maintaining and repairing a window.
First, Kevin explains the anatomy of a window: The sash, stool, sill, jamb, head and side casings, apron, trim and stiles.
Kevin takes a deep dive into the history and manufacture of glass, the most important part of any window: Single pane, double pane, triple pane, coated, safety etc.
We dive into how you repair glass windows. At the studio, Kevin and Tom take you through safety glass and how it works. Then Tom replaces or repairs several windows in different locations.
    Where to find it?
The tempered glass replacement window used for this project was custom ordered from JB Sash and Door [jbsash.com/]. Pre-built tempered glass windows are typically limited to a small selection of sizes. Most window and door manufacturers/suppliers can custom order almost any size tempered glass window.
The window film used to dress up the tempered glass can be found at the local home center. The window film is manufactured by Artscape [artscape-inc.com/]; the style and size is Summer Magnolia Decorative Window Film, 24” x 36.”
Tom demonstrated how to replace the pane of a single-pane basement window. His technique will only work with that type of window. For double- and triple-pane windows, the whole unit will need to be replaced.
The materials Tom used for this project, including the window glazing, glazing points, replacement glass, and glass cutters, are all available at home centers.
Tom installed antique window sash balancers manufactured by Pullman Manufacturing of Rochester, NY [www.pullmanmfg.com/].
Replacement sash cord can be purchased at a hardware store or home center. The display window that demonstrates how sash weights operate was on loan from Boston Building Resources [www.bostonbuildingresources.com/].
Tom installed new replacement windows manufactured by: Andersen Corporation [www.andersenwindows.com/] (model# 400 series “Woodwright”). Anderson replacement windows are available at: The Home Depot [www.homedepot.com/].

The original Windows and doors at my mom's house were never installed leveled/plum when she had it built in 2003; so many things were built/installed slightly crooked.

14:43. This is upsetting. That gorgeous old window is in great condition. Just needed some new glazing and interlocking or spring weatherstripping and it wouldn’t have been drafty or noisy anymore. Instead they replaced it with a cheap home center production window.

Don't know if this covered. If you have tilting windows, which makes them easy to maintain. But beware how you handed them okay. These windows have pivot points which are easy broken if the tilting isn't done correctly. I'm talking from experience. Yes their easily fixed, but not cheaply those pivot piece may not be always purchased at local hardware stores. So my advice is to know the brand name of the windows because more then likely you'll be purchasing then from a dealership company. This advice it's just for home owners, if you rent the landlord may not be as forthcoming in there repairs.

Or, the last house could have had the wood windows adjusted and weatherstripped, instead of tossed in favor of expensive plastic windows that can't be repaired, or helped when they become hard to open, and usually only vaguely mimic the architecture.

What about mullions, and muttons, and stiles, and rails, and pile, and fixed sashes, casement sashes, reglazing double pane and triple pane glass, vent tracks, and coil balances, and block and tackle balances and SDLs, and single strength glass, double strength glass, triple strength glass, this is all window stuff folks and they didn't teach you any of it! Lol then you have different types of seal failure, and energy coating failure, and collapsed glass
