03 Altima 2.5ltr; Rough Idle at Cold Start

- This is my niece's Altima she's had just over a year. Already put a few thousand into it over the course of the year. I decided to start taking care of some of the other repairs needed. In the mean time, all of a sudden, she has a complaint of a rough idle at start up, not all of the time. There was a P0300 code (random misfire) along with some other codes and I decided to follow my gut. Throughout this time, she mentioned having to add coolant every so often, top it off. I have her checking her fluids, in an attempt to be proactive and to hopefully catch issues before they're too late. Well, the two symptoms combined had me go down a short process of elimination.

That borescope is a must have. I kept watching and waiting for the money shot. Amazing job
Yeah, I found it fascinating to watch. But that's a big reason why I sped it up... should've sped it a tad more. Lol
This is sad news for your niece but she has you, so she's in good hands. There is nothing like a visual to verify an issue. That was kind of fun to watch with the borescope. What a great tool.
I have to agree, bad news for my niece, however it's a bit of a learning experience for her. She's learning how intricate cars are... not just fill up & go. Lol

Great video. Your borescope is very effective than the one I use to use. Had a view finder and didn’t give a very clear view. Still cross hatch in the cylinder and the coolant sure cleaned the carbon off the valves. I wish we had grass like you have, we still have a foot of snow 😢. Stay safe.
I have a Harbor Freight one, but this one is the bee's knees! I don't think that one has a side view either. Although I like how much shorter the camera cable is compared to this one, as it's easier to maneuver. Picture quality is on another level! 😁
Yeah, she's bummed, but hopefully I'll get her sorted within the next couple of wks.
Cuba , it is amazing how clear the picture is on that bora scope . Nice job on the diagnosis if you do that job put a new radiator in the car . A lot of head gaskets fail because the radiator is partially clogged do to age , and it can not keep the head cool enough , ( I learned this the hard way ) I found out by testing that any radiator over 8 years old won’t pass a flow test . If I do a head gasket, I do a radiator and I haven’t had one come back.

Yes this camera is amazing and have used it on several jobs. Gets into tight places, under intakes, behind blocks, and still see very clearly.

Yeah, I have to agree, that camera is sexy. So far, it's been great and not too costly, from what I recall. A friend got it 1st, Ivan from Pine Hollow, and I was impressed with it. Comes with a decent amount of memory storage too.

Well done! At the dealer we used to just throw an engine at it. Those were bad about blowing head gaskets and sometimes after the head job the gasket would go out again. Enjoyed the video.
Really? Even after a repair it would blow again? Were heads sent out at all? Just curious.
This will certainly dictate which path I may take or suggest.
I had no idea they're that problematic. I've not come across a blown 2.5 ever until now.... (🤔maybe once, but it was young kid and he drove it hard).

@@CubasAutomotive yes there is a possibility that the head gasket could blow again. Not that it will, but it could happen. Those 2.5l were super bad about blowing head gaskets at higher mileage just because. As a rule of thumb, me personally, when a customer comes to me with a blown head gasket on any car my first question is did it over heat? If so i dont waste my time and just recommend a new engine. That is because aluminum is unforgiving and warps. The head and the block. Ontop of that today's cars have tolerances so tight that it doesn't leave much room for correction. So if you're nieces car overheated be mindful of that. If not you can do the job but nothing is guaranteed. Hope this helps.

Hola CubaExelente informacion saludos desde tijuana ayer sabado 25 de marzo revise un altima 2006 no aceleraba despues de camviar soporte de transmision no tenia codigos almacenados reprograme cuerpo aceleracion se ajustaba pero en cuanto pisaba el pedal se protegia de nuevo lo unico que mire mal fue la carga bateria 17 voltios sugeri al dueňo del taller cambiara alternador asi lo hiso y reprograme cuerpo aceleracion y quedo resuelto saludos un abrazo fuerte desde La mesa Tijuana bendiciones❤

Typical 4 cylinder head gasket failure. Either cylinder 2 or 3. As you said they warp in the middle. Pull the head and send it to the machine shop for resurfacing. Those cameras are a great diagnostic tool. The crosshatch is still visible on the cylinder walls.
Yeah, the cylinder walls are quite nice, just a bit of carbon on piston face & head. I almost ALWAYS send the head out to my local machine shop. Cheap insurance. It should turn out quite nice, it's just finding the time. Too many big jobs to do at the moment. Seems like head gaskets left & right.... I just completely tore down a Windstar 3.8 OHV down to bare block. Doing rings, bearings, and resurfacing heads, then putting it all back. Waiting on shop for it all, dropped it off Saturday. No video, I don't think, just lots of pics.

I have an idle issue when its in park or neutral the rpms jump from 1-2 until i turn on the AC. I tried the idle relearn since a new throttle body is on there but no difference. Any clue what's goin on...?
@sidikleib5779 i assume you mean 1 to 2000 rpms.
It sounds like you may have a vacuum leak or unmetered air issue. Using live data, specifically fuel trims on a scan tool should help you confirm this & point you in the right direction . Good luck
