    This was really helpful and also as a graphic designer who's been in the industry for over 19 years people don't understand the color printing situation at all most of the time. Printing uses a CMYK color combination and that means that all your colors will print slightly darker and a little more muted than what you see on your screen. Something that is very important to know when you're trying to use neon colors, it's just not going to happen like that since neon colors in printing is a totally different process and not offered on print on demand items for a reason.

    Several years ago, I created a Merch by Amazon listing with the title "Sugar and Spice Girls Cute Emoji T-Shirt". What I did not realize until my design was rejected was that I had accidentally included the phrase "Spice Girls" in the title. I became much more careful after that.

    Second I have a question about Titles for listenings. Is it okay to have multiple listings with the same exact titles? For instance when making a bunch of different Christmas shirts, I've just been using the same titles for the most part, because I believe the SEO works for most Christmas shirts.... Should the titles be different?

    Thanks Cassiy, these are gold tips and recommendations. Love your other 3 video series as well, I have been rewatched them to improve my shop and designs. I got to get more beautiful mockups LOL, several mocks I got from your mockup shop are awesome for my designs and doing well.
    It would be great if you have more videos and steps on how to bring traffics to our Etsy shop. I love the one you did you Pinterest and started doing that.
    Also, how do we get seen on those big terms or niches? I found it's hard to get rank on those. i.e. Mother's day, Easter, etc. It's tough to add more listings for them that cost .20 each and get little visits. I'll try to include some board terms and niched down SEO keywords.
    Thanks again! Really appreciate you doing this

    • @CassiyJohnson
      @CassiyJohnson  Před 2 lety +1

      There is no exact way to get seen for the bigger terms but its a mixture of having great mock-ups, great designs and good SEO. You get a little boost right when you list things so if you have all of these things on point then hopefully you get some favorites and sales quick that help you rank!
      You can also use smaller niched keywords within the same niche. So if you are doing Easter shirts for example, maybe your broad search terms would be "Easter Shirts, Funny Easter Shirt, etc" and your more niched down shirts would be "Passover Shirts, He is Risen, Christian Easter shirt, True Store" etc.

    • @CassiyJohnson
      @CassiyJohnson  Před 2 lety +5

      I will look at making one of these in the future if I can find a good way to format it! For a simple answer though, I just believe in "eating the frog" or taking care of things as fast as possible and as easy as possible to ensure I don't have to dwell on it at all. If people are angry and want a refund, then I just cancel their order and give them a full refund. This happens super rarely and they only have a few days to leave a review before they lose that as an option at all which is cool.
      As for everything else, I just always try to find a way to say yes. Like for returns, I don't take them but will let someone buy a new size at cost if something doesn't fit because I want them to be happy.
      Hope this helps in the meantime!!

    I’m really learning a lot from your videos! I’ve had an Etsy shop since 2014. I’m realizing I need to improve my photos and use mock-ups among other things. Everything I sell, I make myself or design and have printed locally, then I package and ship. I’d like to add POD. Is it fine to have a mix of POD items and handmade ones? At this point, I’m not thinking tshirts but mugs, tote bags, dish towels…

    • @CassiyJohnson
      @CassiyJohnson  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes I think it's totally fine to have both in one shop! Might get a little confusing because you'll have all your handmade orders show up on Printify in your "other orders" tab, but you can just delete those! So glad I could teach you a few new things

  • @tatianarenae1896
    @tatianarenae1896 Před 2 lety +2

    Really appreciate all of your tips! You mentioned one word trademarks in your video. I was wondering how do you handle phrases that contain commonly used words that happened to be trademarked? Common words like love, honey, boss, happy, dream, etc. ? If they are in a phrase does that change them enough to be used?

    • @CassiyJohnson
      @CassiyJohnson  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Tatiana! This is a great question. I am not a lawyer so I cannot answer this 100% for you. What I can tell you is if you are even a little bit worried about using something on a shirt, then don't.
      BUT I typically go by if the single word is not trademarked for shirts, then it is probably safe.

  • @aprilb835
    @aprilb835 Před rokem

    Question on the language you used to make sure I'm following accurately - you mentioned checking to see if words are trademarked "for shirts" before using them in your designs. Does that mean if the trademark is specific to a different product but not t-shirts, then it could be used on a t-shirt I design? For example, maybe its trademarked as a sticker but not a tshirt. TIA

  • @margaritafields2546
    @margaritafields2546 Před 2 lety

    Thank you Cassiy for your valuable videos! Could you do a video to show examples/expand upon how to take inspiration but not copy? Sounds silly but with the limited number of styles available (text to the left for example) and trending words, what is it that differentiates copying from inspiration? As you mentioned even color palettes that sell are similar so it's hard to know what is okay (especially in a sea of text to the left shirts all with the same words..)
    Also, I would love to hear your opinion on setting a realistic expectation for myself around what type of results to see with time especially when starting out. Is there a rough formula to have in mind that correlates to the number of designs available and/or months a shop is open? This would be really helpful to know and have in mind to gauge progress/whether a shop is on track.
    Lastly 😅, have you found printify mock-ups to be darker compared to IRL? I know not to use their mock-ups but have found purchased mock-ups referencing specific color 3001 shirts to not look the same compared to when designing in printify. Hard to know what the actual result will be (hopefully the purchased mock-ups are true to color and the printify ones are weirdly darker than in person)?
    Thank you!

    • @CassiyJohnson
      @CassiyJohnson  Před 2 lety +1

      For designs, I show in this video czcams.com/video/pSs0nMfRqZc/video.html How I found a design, and made a few different versions taking inspiration but not copying. Hopes this helps!
      Unfortunately there is no exact formula for results when you start, everyone has different levels of skill and determination in the beginning so it's hard to say. You want to have your store be 50% of what is selling now like random trends, evergreen niches (things that sell all year like reading shirt, teacher shirts etc), and 50% Holidays and Seasons. And you want to try to be ready 8-12 weeks ahead of the holidays and seasons.
      I sell mock-ups and have seen a lot of the shirts in person and 99% of them are true to the color of the shirts. Just make sure whatever mock-up you buy looks like all the others being sold of that color and you will be fine!

    Hi Cassiy, hope that you are well. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Your videos are very helpful; and interesting. I had a few questions to ask you before starting my Etsy store. I would appreciate your input:
    1) I am Canadian and I want to start a shop on Etsy. I would like to use a US t-shirt provider from Printify (Monster Digital). Should I put my shop currency in US or in Canadian dollars? Which option is best to maximize profit and not be affected by currency conversion when selling my shirts. I am scared that both printify and Etsy will charge me a currency conversion rate (as I will be using a US provider). Your answer will help me determine how much I should sell my t-shirt to make a profit.
    2) Etsy income tax: Partners
    My sister and I are starting this shop together. I know that you also have a mockup shop with your sister, so I thought that your input would be helpful. Can I open a joint bank account with her and use this account for my Etsy billing?
    -Can we both claim our income tax? Or should only one of us claim our taxes, and we independently divide the profit throughout the year?
    Thank you for your time!

    • @CassiyJohnson

      Yes I try to use terms from both broad search terms and smaller niche terms. When people find you from the smaller search terms, then you get a boost in the bigger search term. So try to do a mixture of both! Like for Teacher shirts, maybe you would have "Teacher shirt" as a large broad keyword, and then also have "Elementary Teacher" or "Music Teacher" as your more niched down words.

    • @CassiyJohnson
      @CassiyJohnson  Před 2 lety +6

      Thats a great questions Dodger! The answer is not to compete on price. I price all of my shirts at $24.99. When people find a design they like, they don't care what price it is! Personally, I would have buy a $25 shirt than say a $10 shirt because I am thinking it is better quality!
      A lot of people think they need to sell just as low as the low sellers but trust me, this is not the answer. The way I look at it, I'd rather have to sell 10,000 shirts at $10 profit each to earn $100,000, instead of having to sell 20,000 shirts at $5 profit to earn that same $100,000. In both scenarios, you are EARNING the same amount of money. But in scenario 2, you are doing literally double the customer service. I try to focus more on the profit if that makes sense.

    • @CassiyJohnson
      @CassiyJohnson  Před rokem +4

      So in the beginning I probably had 50 listings before one of them took off and I started to sell a lot more! You never know what is going to be just the right combination of trending design, currently in demand niche, great mockups etc. So you are going to have to keep making new listings until you find what works for you. I'd recommend making at least a few hundred listings to really get going. I know that sounds like a lot right now but it gets easier over time! If you just focus on the basics of making listings you know people are already looking to buy, and making designs that are currently in trendy styles, then you should find some great sellers in there if you do that many!

    I have a question. Has printify ever printed the wrong picture? Like the whole "mock up" photo rather than the picture on the shirt? I noticed my "mock up" pic came up on preview with the whole pic on the hoodie I was creating and it really threw me.. Does that make sense?

  • @maedarby
    @maedarby Před 2 lety +1

    Do you purchase a sample of each design to ensure it’s printed properly? Just starting and my first was sent crooked from the highest rated printer😬 I would hate for that to happen for customers

    • @CassiyJohnson
      @CassiyJohnson  Před 2 lety +1

      No I don't! I know it can be hard not having control but I sold over 13k shirts last year and less than 2% of them had any issues. You have to know that sometimes there will be issues but being able to start your own business with practically no money from home is worth the tradeoff in my opinion. Just make sure to have great customer service and 99% of customers are super understanding!

    Thanks for this another golden tips Cassiy! Just want to ask, is it true that once you get 3 strikes on Etsy, your shop will get shut down?

    • @CassiyJohnson
      @CassiyJohnson  Před 2 lety

      No there is no proven exact number of strikes. I have heard of people getting more than that. I think it might have something to do with how long your shop has been open, and how many you have gotten in a certain period of time.
      My best advice is to try to avoid trademark infringements as best as you can and to fight every single copyright infringement you get. If you fight the copyright infringements, then they do not count against you unless the person has actually filled a copyright.

      I am so glad you enjoyed it! You are welcome to sell both in one shop since most people just shop the search results of Etsy and never even come into your store. But most people do digital stuff and physical items in separate shops so it doesn't make it confusing for the customer. But its all about what works best for you!

    • @CassiyJohnson
      @CassiyJohnson  Před 2 lety +2

      I defnitley recommend having all of those products within one store. A lot of people will buy the same design on a shirt and on a mug. I usually make these items at the same time and just chance the SEO to say "mug" instead of shirt but use the same title and tags besides changing that.

    • @CassiyJohnson
      @CassiyJohnson  Před rokem

      Sorry for any confusion, I mean in this video to not copy the design style exactly. You can use the same saying but not the same saying and the same style, because then it just looks like a cheap knockoff. You want to do words on shirts that people are looking to buy/are trendy but bring something else to the table as far as design to catch peoples eye and stand out in the search results for that search term. Hope that makes more sense!

    Hi Cassiy, quick question about shipping. I offer free shipping on everything (and build the cost into the listing obviously) but Etsy keeps suggesting that I offer the free shipping guarantee (free shipping over $35) to give my listings priority placement. That doesn’t seem to make sense when I’m already offering free shipping. Can I set that up anyway even though there’s no shipping to pay?

    • @CassiyJohnson
      @CassiyJohnson  Před 2 lety

      Yes I have done some personalized products! I start the listing in Etsy and don't sync it to Printify. Then when I get an order, I make them a proof of the design and send it to them for approval. Then I add that as a new design on Printify and save as a draft. Then you go to your "other orders" tab and select that item for the order. Hope that helps!

    I just asked another youtuber if we could make shirts with song lyrics - like Let's go girls or Justin Bieber but making sure not use the celebrity's name in the title tags seo, etc., and they said song lyrics are trademarked and could/would receive an infringement. I know LHC made shirts for Shania Twain concert and said in one of their video's is was ok - now I'm confused?? Is it ok - or will Etsy hit you for infringement for making a shirt that says Let's go girls?? Anyone know??

    • @CassiyJohnson
      @CassiyJohnson  Před 2 lety +3

      This is a great question! Personally, I wouldn't touch anything famous like that just to be safe. But just to be clear, its not Etsy that gives you an infringement, its Justin Bieber and Shiana Twain's lawyers that go around and report people. Etsy just takes your listing down.
      As for "Let's Go Girl's" specifically, It think the reason LHC says it was safe to use is because it wasn't the song name/album name, its just a random small portion of a lyric. If its a tiny enough piece of a song and you don't use the artist name, then you MIGHT be fine, but there is never a guarantee.
      There are so many other safe niches to make money in, I just would recommend staying away from anything you aren't 100% sure is ok because the long term value of your Etsy account is worth SOOOOOO much more than a quick buck.

      I've seen shops that were open 3 years, 5 years and even 7 years, have some infringements and get shut down forever! People have employees and warehouses and then just one day its all gone... So best to just stick to the safe stuff in my opinion!
