    With 600 miles done in the two weeks between collection on 1st September 2020 and today (15th September 2020), we've done the requisite 600 miles and she's in for the 1st service. Travel with me for some general 1st thoughts, a couple of issues and some advice on where we may go for our 2020 UK tour next week. Also a little bonus footage on my ACF50 treatment after 1 week of ownership!
    Thanks for viewing as always, look forward to the comments and advice

    Hi mate, Nick Kennedy here from I.o.W.
    Just seen your new video and yes there are some issues I found on my 1250GSA .
    The rubber garter on the final drive was replaced with less than 6k on her.
    The starter button rubber will break down over a period of time as the sun deteriorates the rubber. And it's a fortune to replace. I put some vaseline on now and then.
    The connection side...... well sure you know by now. For what we pay for the bike, you would think this was sorted.
    Why no standard USB port...I don't know.
    There are a few other niggles, but thay might be down to my riding style.
    Other than that.... bloody great bike. Went away all around the south west over 3 days, and she (Beryl) as I call her, just keeps a smile on my face.
    Take care fella. Look forward to your other vids

    Great video Nick, I had my 1st service on my GS Rallye last week, I don't have SOS so cant comment but they did do the 3 hour software update. Only issue I has was a flat battery in the key fob. Not had a chance to connect phones etc, listening to your video it sounds like lots of features I don't understand so need to give it some time now and work it out. My service was more expensive than your and also paid for by the sales team (Northampton). Glad you like the GSA, have a great trip and looking forward to the video.

    Hi Nick, My GS is in for its 1st service next week!! No issues as of now. mine connects to my Samsung perfectly with no issues as to my Sena 30K no probs ! with regard to Wales, having just moved from there and having a good working knowledge, when you leave Aberystwyth head inland a little to Devils Bridge then over the Elan Valley where there are 5 Dams, beautiful, you will end up in Rhayder, then head south towards LLandovery where you can get a nice welcome at the Owls Nest a bikers cafe . then back out towards the coast from there.. The Elan Valley is a must!!, you wont miss much on the coast road south from Aber, its full of speed limits and traffic!! enjoy. Dave

    I'm nearly at 600 miles on my GSA Exclusive in just under 2 weeks with the 1st service due on Tuesday, I'm pleasantly surprised at how much better it is that the Triple Black I had before . I don't seem to have had any issues with the connection to my phone (Samsung S20) for the BMW app but can't help with phone calls as I don't have any comms in my helmet at the moment. I did get the lost connection warning a couple of times during run outs into Wales and could only get rid of the warning symbol by switching the ignition off. I checked the TFT software version after your video and it's even earlier than yours so I shall ask about that. A run up the M50/M5 this morning with the cruise control set at 75 didn't show any fuelling problems. There are no problems that I can think of so. all in all, I'm pretty happy.

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  Před 3 lety

      That’s great Sam. Warn them if you want the software upgrading as it’s a 3-4 hour job and it’ll just sit in their workshop. I do think android works better than Apple so I may be blaming BMW unfairly. They sort of admit an Apple issue in a video someone posted a link to in these comments. I love my new bike too but my ‘upgrade’ is lesser than yours so you’ve got, I guess, surprising differences even in engine character?

    Nick, North of Newcastle (on the A19 after the Tyne tunnel, which is free for motorbikes) take the A189 instead of the A1, this will take you north on the Northumberland Coastal Route (all signposted with brown signs), which will go past all the castles along the coast. Walkworth and Alnwick castle is well worth a look. You will also see the Farne Islands and Bamburgh castle, before picking up the A1 and passing Holy Island and Lindisfarne. It's well worth the detour, and has some great roads. Enjoy!

    Nick. You route after the Humber Bridge takes you along along the somewhat bland (and potentially busy) A165 along the coast to Bridlington and Scarborough. Slight detour inland will take you along the A164 after the bridge. B1248 to Wetwang and A166 to Fridaythorpe where is situated the Seaways Cafe. A focal point for us northern bikers. On leaving you can then head towards Scarborough as recommended. These are recommended biking roads. That way you will get a snapshot of the stunning Yorkshire Wolds (Hockney country). They do attract some Police attention the further into the Wolds you get so it pays just to be conscious of that. Forecast is good for the weekend (as of Thur)

    Cracking bike Nick. I have a 2018 GSA, which is still on the original TFT software, with no connectivity issues whatsoever (iPhone xs and Cardo Packtalk slim). However, I don’t like the user interface and prefer the Cardo voice commands, which don’t work with the TFT. Every now and then, I will give another go, but always resort to deleting the connections and just pairing my phone and Nav V to the headset. Ref the hunting at motorway cruising speed. The bikes are running a lot leaner due to emissions regs, and this could be what you are feeling.

  • @Johnnywoo7
    @Johnnywoo7 Před 3 lety +1

    Hi Nick. Pleased to see you are getting on well with the GSA apart from a few connectivity issues.
    I have a 1200 GSA TE 95 plate and I can say that the ‘hunting’ in cruise control is normal, the engine management keeps the speed constant and ‘holds’ it back if the speed increases but I know what you mean feels odd for a start. After going to my local dealer in Peterbourogh last Saturday I have decided to px the 1200 for a mint 3100 mile GSA 1250 TE 69 plate. I pick it up early November can’t wait. Hopefully I won’t experience TFT problems but I don’t require the media or phone settings that it offers as all that comes direct into my sena in the helmet. I have googled as many CZcams videos on TFT so I have an idea how it works. Really looking forward to the new bike, the 1200 was good but hopefully the 1250 will be fantastic, I will let you know how I get on. Good stuff Nick keep the videos coming.

    Another tip for your tour would be when heading south from Jedburgh on the A68 turn off at West Woodburn towards Bellingham (just before the River Rede). When you enter Bellingham turn left at the T junction onto the B6320, just out of the village (at St Oswald's church) turn right. This is a great road to Kielder Water, which is the largest man made reservoir (by capacity) in the UK. At Tower Knowe Visitors Centre there are free toilets and a cafe.

All this stuff connects via Bluetooth and the versions of bluetooth each is operating has a profound effect. There is nothing you can do about it. I have found it essential to make sure my helmet comms and phone bluetooth is on BEFORE you switch on the bike. Mostly, that works and everything connects. However, for no reason my helmet will just decide not to connect and/or my phone. My phone is Samsung Galaxy on Android. How you pair everything with Bluetooth is important. First, try to be in a wi fi and bluetooth dead area. Other signals from devices not yours will affect your pairing. I found a great detailed CZcams video in May 2019 that covered this subject in incredible detail. I can't recall the name but i did take detailed notes and screen shots. In essence, this is the pairing order for best results on the BMW TFT screen. First, pair the helmet headset to the TFT using Primary Phone Connection. Second, pair the headset to the Nav VI using Secondary Phone connection OR GPS connection. Third, Pair the phone to the TFT. Forth, pair the phone to the NAV VI. Finally, perform intercom pairing with passenger helmet if appropriate. I found this to work well (mostly). Like you, I find making calls very difficult. I have set my phone to automatically answer when on bluetooth connection. I see incoming calls on the TFT and then just pull-over to carry on speaking. My phone book just won't upload to my TFT! Regarding your SOS. It has always done that. I keep on getting warning messages on my TFT to say it has failed and seek a dealer. In fact, as you say it has just lost 2G signal. My biggest gripe is that BMW won't change the warning message to sayt that the signal has been lost; not the dramatic message it displays. Yes, the warning triangle remains until you stop and restart the engine. Finally, my cruise control works beautifully and always has. But that's probably because my engine fuelling on the ecu has been altered and substantially improved. Hope this helps.

      That’s great thanks. Most of the connection issues I’ve had before and almost always get a connection. The real issue now is dropping it and the quality. Be aware, in case you didn’t know. Each BT connection has its own volume level so try getting someone to call you when stationary and when talking, turn up the volume in the phone. I often find this at half volume so full volume on headset only in fact is half volume. Ride safe 👍🏻

    Gsa 1250 being sold so high no world wide, many people do have these problems. But I find a unique thing that many owners just don't tell that they have these issues and if u ask them they will simply ignore you. Thanks for the nice video Nick. As always there are many things on which I certainly agree. Currently I am driving a GSA1200LC from 2015 which I could buy second hand. There 2 main reasons I did not switch (yet) to the 1250GSA): price and too much electronics. I already find that there is already too much electronics on my bike and that even got worse on the 1250GSA. I abslutely love electronics, but then I wonder where this ends. In this video you’re complaining that many of the fancy electronics do not work. You’re paying a lot for this and if it does not woork, what is then the rational from BMW to offer this... Anyway other than that an absolutely brilliant bike!!! I love the fact that you love the big fuel tank just like me!! I love the 30L fuel tank which gives me a realistic range of 550kms... That is insaint... I want to fuel when I want it, and not when the bike needs it... Ride safe and I am looking forward to your next video!!

    Hi Nick. Some comments. I have not had any connectivity issues on my GSA. My SENA works just fine, no hunting on cruise control and the Nav6 shows speed limits perfectly - in Km. I have not tried phone calls on my iPhone, but will do so this weekend if I can. The range on the GSA is something I am so used to - to the point of rubbing it in with my buddies who don’t have my 550 km range. I installed a Wunderlich screen, which is a lot bigger than stock, and it is great. I am 6’1” and get no buffeting at all. One thing I am envious is your servicing cost. You said it was 130 Quid, whereas my 1,000 km service was $510 CAD - a big difference.
    WRT your trip, too bad you couldn’t get to Ireland, great country and people. For next summer, you might want to consider the NC 500. I was born in Dundee and enjoy all things Scottish. The connectivity, SOS, software updates etc is precisely the reason why my F850GS was bought without those things. Whilst they’re great when they work, they would really irritate me when they (inevitably) don’t.
    On the tour side of things, you’re missing some great roads in Wales. The roads you’ve chosen are good, but you’re definitely missing some absolute top tier riding. I don’t know how well you know Wales but if you turn left at Aber it takes you to the Elan Valley along the mountain road (incredible road, and quiet) via Devil’s Bridge. From the Elan Valley you can weave your way down to Llandovery, then turn right to the Llyn Brianne Resovoir. Genuinely one of the best roads in Wales and usually empty. Follow that to Tregaron about 20 miles then on to Lampeter. From Lampeter then go to Cardigan via Newcastle Emlyn. Cardigan is a great place to stop. Recommend Pizza Tipi or El Salsa for dinner, and a visit to Poppit Sands beach in St Dogs.
    From Cardigan you can pick up the coastline again as per your original plan. Then, when you go over the top of the Beacons you’ll go through a place called Sennybridge. Just after is an MoD road on the left that takes you through a training area. Worth a diversion to see the replica German village built on top of the hill in the distance.

    Just racked up 20k miles on my GSA 1250 HP, no issues with the cruise control what so ever, as for connectivity your phone is not disconnecting from the TFT, I stream all my audio though the TFT onto my Sena 50 R and I too frequently loose the warning speed symbols but the audio continues to stream so there is no lose of connectivity, the TFT is using your phone for positioning GPRS and if it can’t position you the TFT Nav goes to pot, hence I prefer the NAV 6 as this is a proper GPS device, would never go out without it. Difference in your speed between the TFT speedo and the NAV 6 is the Nav 6 is using GPS to estimate speed periodic polling so not as accurate as the TFT I have been told, doesn’t both me either way. Now for the funnies I have experienced, when I set the preload on the suspension from road to dynamic is frequently goes back road mode on its own, not always just some times, suspension strut failure warning ⚠️ is a frequently error that appears, this then renders the suspension setting useless, this resolved with the old reboot feature, ignition off then back on again, yes I get the same SOS warning when out of range, this said did not get any warning whilst in the Alps this year and my phone was showing no service, phone calls as you say are impossible, through the TFT given up with that feature probably not a bad thing though, not a believer in using mobiles whilst driving, other than these few niggles it’s a fab bike and I would not be without it, clocked up 7k miles in July carrying a full load camping gear the lot and it did not miss a beat.

I do sometimes sense I have to find things to moan about. For sure I love this and my old GSs. I have deliberately not got a mount for my phone as I too don’t really want the distraction but am wondering if it was at least closer and not in a jacket pocket or tank bag it may be better. Hi Trevor. Welcome to my world. Nothing about wearing glasses is ideal I’m afraid. I don’t have any special advice either. I wish there was a slightly lower setting on the visor than the first open ‘click’ of that makes sense?? I always clean mine with proper solution before a ride and I prefer my visor open anyhow and the GSA screen helps that. I always have both the chin and top vents open of course and after a while the temperature equalises and I can normally ride with it shut. However I’m ‘lucky’ that my eyesight is only -1.00 in both eyes so I could probably ride in daylight without. I also have daily contacts that I never wear a paper from on the bike as the REAL challenge is when it’s wet!!! You lift the visor to see and the glasses get soaked!!! Being only slightly off too. Wearing one lens is sufficient. Like a monocle 🧐. Sorry I can’t be more help but persevere and you’ll find a solution 👍🏻

    Hi Nick. I have been told by BMW recently that they are working with Apple specifically to sort the connectivity problems and should be sorted soon. Android seems to be generally fine. I had the same problems on my 1250 GSA up until the last Connected app update on my iPhone about 10 days ago. All problems have now disappeared. Make sure that on your iPhone that the app settings have the LOCATION settings to ALWAYS ON because if you have it at - while using the app - then when your phone goes into sleep mode a couple of minutes into your journey then the app will disconnect. Your phone will ask you sometimes if you want to leave the setting to always but do not change it. Have the phone battery well charged also to aid connectivity. Good luck!

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  Před 3 lety

      Thanks Mark. Yes I have had ‘always on’ for sometime. I’ve always had trouble actually connecting and could handle that by re-starting bike or helmet or physically connecting through BT connections on the iPhone. I had that to a minute fine art 😂 the issue now is two-fold I guess. The connected app just disconnects. They’ve made the app so much better with ride recording and telemetrics and stuff but that’s useless if it disconnects as is does. Just completed 1650 miles over 7 days and I get parts of the ride with dotted lines joining one connected part to the next with large parts disconnected. The quality of a phone call is either poor or non-existent, despite it being connected and call time counting. That’s got far worse since even the early days of the ‘connectivity’/TFT/Nav6 combination I had in mid-2018. They need to fix it soon as it’s a major part of the sale for me. I find the Nav 6 poor (too complicated for its own good) and want to use the improving Nav via the app/TFT, but that’s not possible with the poor connection to the phone. Anyhow, thanks again for the info and here’s hoping 🤞🏻

Again, £600 accessory should work IMO. E.g it should disable stuff to make everything works. It’s obvious the Nav on the next TFTs will probably make the extra unit redundant. That will help for those going forward I hope. Slightly worrying thing is if they can’t fix this are all the other bike systems working as they should? (ABS, traction, etc)

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  Před 3 lety

      Hi Nigel. No. It’s all provided in the Nav6. You can step through 4 levels. Showing 1, 2, 4 or 16 telemetric items from the bike. The 16 are selectable from about 20 and are displayed in the sort order so the top selected item will show when you display 1, the top 4 when you display 4 and so on. To set it up the Nav must be on the bike with ignition on. Select ‘my bike’ under apps (I think as don’t have Nav handy). Here you can select items to show. While riding you can select it by holding menu button (on left handlebar) up until ‘TFT’ in top left of TFT screen changes to ‘NAV’. Now the whizzy wheel is controlling the Nav. Spinning it will zoom in and out on map first but if you hold left you should get that screen. And then rolling the wheel will scroll between the four levels (1, 2, 4, 16 items). I have speed (more accurate than TFT), range, auto-trip and consumption As my first 4 in that order. Flicking again on wheel brings up compass I think??? Holding menu button down returns to TFT control (leaving current setting on Nav). All from memory so may be slightly awry but theory is correct 👍🏻

      Hi Jorge. Mine is a little on from yours and if they follow convention that’s a full version, (022 v 021), as well as increases in the others likely to be patches and bug fixes. What REALLY bugs me is there appears to be no release notes to tell us what differences are as some of these updates may only work with certain models and therefore be unnecessary. For sure they are admitting to the iPhone phone call issue which started with 13.2.3 (Dec 19) and they are ‘working with Apple on it’. Well it’s coming up a year and still nothing. There is for sure an update to the software as mine is in on Tuesday for a couple of days to try and fix. I’ll let everyone know but I doubt we’ll get much progress. I also feel there is some ‘contention’ issues with the Nav 6 ‘stealing’ connection sometimes. I’ll report back 👍🏻

      Nick Hodge Thank you very much for your reply, today I had to call bmw roadside assistance because the error message on the engine appeared on the tft after 5 miles of use and a few seconds later I received another error message and this time in red that the emergency call was faulty, I turned the bike off for 5 minutes and when I turned it back on the engine error had been eliminated and only the yellow faulty emergency call error remained. They told me that I have to take the bike to the workshop tomorrow to connect it to the console and update the firmware / software and look at everything.
      I also updated my iphone to ios 14.0.1 and the iphone does not detect the tft and I cannot pair them and the sena srl 2 of my Shoei Neotec 2 does not detect the tft and it does not pair 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

      Best not do it until the dealer reads all the fault codes but there is a reset all option under the settings menu. My dealer said that often helps clear all connections and such

      That’s an intermittent problem I think. I’ve heard some very bad but my old GS wasn’t bad at all although certainly the left was louder than the right. The boxer is not a ‘smooth’ running engine and I’m not sure the rattle is a fault but I know it is being noticed and looked at

    Hi Nick, I’ve just had the latest email from BMW Mottarad with the latest new features for the 1250 GSA have you had chance to see them yet yet?

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes Kenneth. Seems they’ve changed the colourways and added some more tech (heated seat, adaptive headlight and eco modes). They’ve dropped the exclusive for the triple black it seems, updated the HP and added the 40 year yellow version. At first sight it adds about £1,500 to the price for the tech extras, or £3,000 for that AND the 40 year colourway. Would like to see them in the flesh but not overly enamoured with new colours (never been a black vehicle person). What do you think?

    • @kenjames2214
      @kenjames2214 Před 3 lety

      Nick Hodge...like the tech changes but not keen on the black versions tbh

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  Před 3 lety +1

      Kenneth James yep I’m with you. Never wanted the HP (although it looks great on the new XR). The others I just don’t like (may be different in flesh?). Very happy with my colourway although exclusive now dropped. Of the tech I think the ride modes I would benefit from but can honestly say the heated seat is not for me (I had an X5 with them and made me feel sick) and never had cold backside on a bike. The adaptive headlight would be good but normally I ride early and finish early so think in 2 years on my old GS I had proper headlight on maybe twice. I think they may have tweaked the fuelling and exhaust too as I thought they were now Euro 5 but thing the figures they quote on engine are the same. Still fantastic bikes but happy I bought mine before 👍🏻

      Yes I have disconnected the helmet from direct connection to the phone. Everything is just paired with TFT and Nav is paired with phone and headset but all phone and media channels switched off. Always been a little flaky but it worked. Now it’s just poor quality and drops in use (previously once you had a connection it was solid even if it sometimes wouldn’t connect) 👍🏻

      Nick Hodge ah yes .... this I’ve also found , one needs to have your phone as near to the front of the bike as possible, having it in my back pocket the connection would come in and out.

  • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff

    Triumph having the same issues with connectivity and iPhones. The quicker these bike manufacturers stop trying to do it on the cheap and pay Apple and Google for Carplay/Android Auto licenses the better (like Honda do, for Apple).I would pay to have something that works rather than pay less for something really sketchy.

    Hello from India Nick. I am also on the same software version 022_005_041 right from when I got the bike on 5th August. I got the 1st service done at 618 kms on the odo as the manual said anywhere between 500~1200 kms, on 31st August and there was no software update till then. I am running a Samsung Note 9, so a android phone, and no issues with that for receiving phone calls, although I use a Samsung Level U Bluetooth headset under my helmet and its a Bluetooth 4.1 unit. One thing I found that I can't adjust the volume from the scroll wheel on the bike as it says in the manual but can only adjust volume on the headset buttons. Have you faced a similar issue? I have also recently attached the Nav 6 and am reasonably happy though Google Maps are the best here in India. Do check out my comprehensive ownership blog on TeamBhp India. Cheers...

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Dhiraj and thanks for the comment. The volume adjustment on the wheel is because the adjustment of volume on the Bluetooth protocol is proprietary to BMW so volume only works with their helmets. They are releasing it to the main intercom manufacturers but it’ll be up to them whether or how fast they release it. If you search the comments on this video someone provided a great link to a BMW podcast on CZcams that covered all the issues and features of the connected app. It was in that. Ride safe 👍🏻

      I have got used to lowering the suspension if I feel it's over too much and then back to 'auto' to ride. I certainly had times it leant a lot, is that what you find. Here's an image from the footage when I fitted the lights of the plug in the right side of my beak, not sure what it is but it may look familiar, also can't say I noticed one the other side???

      Re the side stand I find that unless the ground is perfectly flat or with a left camber it sits almost vertical to the point im scared to get off it in case it topples. They old airhead one you could chuck anywhere. Other than that, love it. I installed a Arrow slip on the other day and the new sound expecially using the quickshifter is amazing.

      @nickhodgeUK  Před 3 lety

      Paul Ashcroft you don’t have the reverse problem do you with the suspension already on min??? Mine came out of the dealer like that and in many cases that will stand it too upright. I know the old GSAs had a really sweeping stand

    • @9121646
      @9121646 Před 3 lety +1

      I see what you mean but defo on auto. Its manageable but just different I suppose. Couple things I've found out that you might not know. When navigating the menus ie with the down button to get to the nav or media screens there is a quick return function by long pressing up to get back to front tft screen. Then long press down takes you directly back to last viewed menu screen. Handy to toggle back and forth without multiple up down left rights (you may already know this) oh and also the electric steering lock. When you switch off bike with bars to left keep holding button and auto does the steering lock. Same in reverse. To start one long hold and it unlocks and starts tft in one press. 😊

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  Před 3 lety +1

      Paul Ashcroft nope. Both functions new to me ta. Mine’s in Tuesday for a couple of days to look at connectivity. Not expecting much but researching BT tech to try and find best set up as I feel there is channel stealing going on between NAV 6, TFT and Helmet. Once I’ve got it sorted it may be a vid and that’ll be good extra content. Ta 👍🏻
