    There are no pumps involved in the Elan Valley project, an incredible feat of engineering…. Water moves from Elan Valley to Birmingham under gravity and siphon only…. Superb place to ride a bike, the weather isn’t always as good as you had !

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  Před 3 lety

  • @matttownsend1652
    @matttownsend1652 Před 3 lety +1

    Hey Nick,
    Great vlog . You are quite right the Elan Valley does supply sunny Birmingham with our water. The Elan valley, you just can't beat it it's our go to place.
    Ride Safe !!

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Matt. I was right on that point but since learned there are no pumps. Just gravity and a pipeline that slopes at 1:2300 to supply it. Arrives in Edgebaston apparently 👍🏻

  • @Bazza47
    @Bazza47 Před 3 lety +3

    I was at Elan Valley at the end of May and it's one of my favourite places to go for a ride and all the dams were overflowing then so looks like the Brummies have been thirsty. IIRC the pipeline that is fed from the tower by where you turned left after going to Claerwen Dam goes to the reservoir at Edgebaston and it's completely gravity fed which is quite an feat of engineering

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi Adrian. Read up quite a bit since I came home and it is a feat. I remember Dad telling me it went to Birmingham when I was a kid, so that came from 50 years back 🤣🤣. I also learned the water from Lake Vymwy supplies Liverpool. The drop in the pipe to Birmingham is 1:2300. Amazing. There is a pump at Garreg Ddu Dam but that lifts it to the next water course in the valley so technically from the last reservoir it flows by gravity to Birmingham. Loved reading about it all after the event. Cant wait to go back now 🤣👍🏻

      @@nickhodgeUK Driver pulled out in front of me Nick whilst I was riding on a quiet Hampshire village near Hook. I was able to avoid his wing but he ploughed into my left side. I was doing 28 mph in a 30mph. He continued up the road for about 30mtrs then abandoned the car and me in the middle of the road. Car not insured, no MOT or tax. Police unable to trace driver or last registered keeper. Car stank of weed according to Police. £15,700 of damage to my bike. Had I not have done several weeks of my IAM it would’ve been worse as my road position would have been less advantageous. Not going to bore everyone with the injuries, and my insurance is responding, but these criminals are out there and it’s actually shocking how regular this is now happening on our roads based on the research I’ve done. It would have even worse had I been on any other bike than a GSA (or boxer engined bike) because the cylinder & crash bars took the impact, not my lower left leg. Non-fault but no doubt I’ll be paying for it on my insurance for a while!

    • @JoseSanchez-ht4cc
      @JoseSanchez-ht4cc Před 3 lety +1

      Don’t think I’m going new this time Nick. Think I’m going for a white, blue & red 2020 GSA TE with less than a 1000 miles on it. Full,luggage & Akrapovic too. And run in for me as I have a trip down to Malaga in September. Hopefully NOG can transfer over my Denali set up.

      @@JoseSanchez-ht4cc it’s shocking. I’m thinking of starting IAM. I’d consider myself fairly good and was ‘fortunate’ to have had my major motorcycle accident aged 19 when I could recover but that makes you realise how easy it is and how much it hurts. Glad you’re ready to get back on the horse though. There are so many criminals (as that is what they are) out there 250,000 more police are needed not 40,000. Ride safe mate 👍🏻

      Jack. £600 here too. I’d stick with your mobile phone!! It’s too complicated and I’d ditch it if I could get the BMW connected app to stay connected. In my eyes it’s good for two things. Recording the route (that’s where the .gpx files in the description came from) and showing telemetry from the bike. You’ll see that at the start of my Northern Ireland trip. You can have up to 16 indicators. I usually have 4. It’s OK but certainly not worth the money IMO 👍🏻

      @@nickhodgeUK thank you for saving me $1200 I will keep using the BMW navigation app on my phone which also shows me the turns on my dash, by the way I am 58 years old owned more than 30 bikes, brought my first Gs1250 in April and now I know what all the fuss is about, it would have to be the most comfortable bike I have ever ridden, and the power is unbelievable, I think this bike will be a keeper.

    Why the need for trips to Europe with a covid passport when we have scenery like this on our door steps? In Wales & Scotland. And when you've done those there is always the Wild Atlantic Way from the north of Ireland down the west coast to the south. A 1600 miles scenic route.

      I agree. This is my 5th UK trip since the pandemic. All good. I’ve done all 4 nations of the UK. I must do the WAW but am unsure of the status of the Republic. I know you can cross from NI but not sure if that’s ok if you’ve been in GB in the last 10 days?? I know some have done it recently but the fines are big if they decide they are going to enforce the EU regs?? 👍🏻

      Surely you need a Covid passport to do the Wild Atlantic Way? It’s in Europe!

      @@richardbrooks4549 hi Richard. It’s tough to know. I’ve not gone for that reason but you have free travel from NI to Republic so that’s allowed and you can dock in Republic and go to NI as long as you don’t stop overnight in the Republic. Then ‘Rule 1m’ should apply. I’ve not been brave enough to risk it though (some have) as the fine is €500 I think. 😱

    Do you know the answer to this question Nick my gps on the BMW app will only display in Portrait not Landscape, which won’t work with my phone holder I even went to the BMW dealer and they can’t fix it either

      I CZcams and found the answer once the bike starts moving it changes to Landscape

      @nickhodgeUK  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Jack. There is a setting in the app of auto/portrait/landscape BUT. This does NOT change the view until you start on a route. Even when you press go, until you actually set off and the screen goes to just the route with blue arrow and ‘close’ button that setting has no affect. Maybe you have not got that far presuming, as I did, that changing that setting would be immediate or at least when you press ‘go’ for the proposed route? Let me know and ride safe 👍🏻

      @@nickhodgeUK thank you very much Nick you would think the BMW dealership would know that, I was trying to change it while the bike was stationary, got frustrated and just switched to google maps, which of course you then don't get turn by turn signals on the TFT dash which I find great.
