How to Bunnyhop a Full Suspension MTB

- If you’ve come to mountain biking by way of BMX, you might find it hard to hop around on a squishy bike. After all, shocks are not designed for bouncing, in fact they’re designed to absorb bumps and keep you from getting bucked off your bike.
On a rigid BMX or trials bike, the response is instant. Pull up, and the bike comes up with you. Even on a hardtail, your forks squish when you try to pull up. On a full suspension, you have a rear shock to account for as well, but that doesn’t mean you can’t hop around, it’s all about timing. In fact, hopping around with shocks is a lot of fun, since rough terrain gets smoothed out like a skate ramp.
We’ve talked about preloading before on hardtails, where you crouch down and compress your front suspension, allowing you to spring back up into an American bunnyhop. On a full suspension bike, you need to preload both your front and rear to get up off the ground. Although this is done in two steps, you really need to think of it as one fluid motion. Let’s take a closer look.
First start by directing your weight downwards over the fork, compressing it as much as possible. As you pull back, your rear suspension will compress. Notice how your legs should be bent, ready to spring upwards. Now in one fluid motion, you’re going to jump upwards and pull the bike with you using the handlebars. That’s how you bunny hop a full squish, or any bike for that matter.
The most popular question is, “how do I get the rear off the ground”. My answer? You need to jump with your legs. Don’t focus on your feet and pedals. Making an upside down J with your handlebars is all you need to get your bike up. See here how the bars are what lead the hop. Just like jumping off a diving board, it’s your legs that ultimately help your defeat gravity. So, jump with your legs, and pull the bike up with your arms.
Doing a proper bunny hop comes naturally to some, but it didn’t for me. It was probably about 2 years of riding BMX every day before I could hop high. Of course, I didn’t have CZcams. Just a whole bunch of time, and some friends trying to learn the same thing.
If you’re getting discouraged, keep in mind that I’m a 5’ 4” web developer with asthma-not exactly the profile of an athlete. Nevertheless, I was able to get my 32 pound all mountain bike on to a picnic table with a little practice. It all comes down to repetition and timing. - Jak na to + styl
5'4 web developer with asthma, who also has SICK technical skills on a bike!
haha yeah
+Dingus “dingusmagee” Magee I know I'm jealous but motivated
Dingus Magee Oh Yeah!!!
this spoke to me on so many levels
you can set the world record for the most number of effective bunnyhop videos in a channel
+DINOBLADER He's probably done that already.
Hi Seth, being 5'5", I always felt a bit behind with bikes being bigger than me. I find your table bunny hop amazing and inspiring. Now I have no excuse!
Your experience is inspiring! Thank you for being honest about the 2 years of trying 🤝
You're a great motivator, dude. I just got back from a trip to Sedona which FORCED me to learn a brute-ish form of bunny hop since there you're often faced with rock uphill obstacles a foot or greater. I was amazed by how effortless it felt when I sort of accidentally did a bunny hop at full speed and suddenly I was on top of this huge rock. It definitely helped to face trails that exceeded my skillset.
Thanks Seth. You're bunny hop tutorials have me hopping up 6"-8" curbs consistently without casing after only a few days of practicing with my full suspension bike.
How perfect! I just bought a full suspension bike and want to learn some new tricks! Thanks for the awesomeness video. Really made sense and explained it good 😀
Probably the best video on the topic and has helped me improve heaps
Hey Seth! Awesome video. So far your bunny hopping tutorials have helped a lot. Your right though, getting the rear up on a full squish seems to be the most challenging for me.
Your bunnyhop and tricks are amazing
Loving the content, keep it up! Also love the old as footage of you as a grom. Sick!
Seth you're amazing I am mastering many MTB skills because of you great explanation and slowmo shots. Keep the good work :D
+Diego Armando Alarcon Lopez thanks!
Seth, you are a beast!
I love you man! You are the best on the net....Thanks so much. I have learned nothing, but that is not because it has not been presented... I am actually getting and feeling old as shit and I and I am trying to reverse all of this. You are my aggregate to this.... My wife and I just bought hard tail Diamondbacks, but we will work toward more. Thanks for all you and your channel offer....
+mattspawn1975 thanks for watching!
+mattspawn1975 hell man im 25 and while i am super agile, flexible and athletic. I can wait to methodically figure out my new "full squish" .. Trying to stay young on that.. but these tips are priceless. Sessioning alone will help me out the most
mattspawn1975 May suggest testosterone treatment from your physcian. All your aches and soreness vanishes. Everything you eat gets burned and your significantly leaner dispite a higher calorie intake.
seth you are the best MOUNTAIN BIKER I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!Your work is awesome and your tutorials are really good!!!
+everything about mountainbiking you are a pretty good mountain biker yourself!
+Seth's Bike Hacks thanks!!
I appreciate your lack of ego. Nice hops man.
Nice 2016 DB Mission there :D, was thinking about getting 1 but opted to get the Atroz Comp :). And these video's give lots of Good info. Thanks :D.
I wanna say a realy big thanks!!! only because of you and this video I'd succesfully did Bunnyhops!!!! thank you
jonatan green, Israel
Always great advice. Thanks, Seth!
Sweet that was a killer video, great bunny skills dude and perfect explanation on how to pop your bike!
ok so i have very little mtb experience, but i just in one day learned how to bunny hop a full suspension bike, and its a nice one... txs for the vid!
I thought I would never be able to bunnyhop, finally can now, thanks for the video!
HEY SETH!!! ur gonna be famous a year from now
You were right!
Are you from the future?
I'm 6' tall on a large Roscoe and as a beginner in the multitude of skills, your videos are pushing me to learn and excel in this world. I will say though, I feel like my front tire is filled with lead. Hahaha! I'm still trying though
Well done Seth, your videos never fail to put a smile on my face and teach me something new. I like the camera work too, have you ever done a video about your camera man/woman? I guess I'll have to look but if you haven't that would be interesting to see. 5'4 web developer with asthma gave me quite a laugh too.
Youre a total bad ass Seth, love your videos.
I agree with this, I came from bmx background too and its quite different in FS bike to do this. Thanks.
I think I have the American bunny hop technique down now, I just need to work on height. I can barely get my back wheel up a few inches. Thanks for the videos, they've really helped me a lot
Practice hopping onto things, trust me, it helps a lot.
Love your videos Seth:)
Really helpful video man!
keep up the great work!
you seem to make it so easy. .thanks!
that's was great advice from the expert...tx alot dude
Oh man those old videos bring back memories.
+Daniel f hell yeah man, I need to really scrape the archives
+Seth's Bike Hacks lol wait, don't delete I am not done watching all your videos ( just don't want to divert of before I learn at least one of track-stand, manuals, bunny hop)
+pushkar madan I'm probably not going to be deleting any more videos for a bit. It's mainly the way older ones where I was cursing or setting a really bad example. For the future of the channel (and from a monetary standpoint) it'll hurt me to keep those forever.
Nice videos you took lots of time to make love it. I mountain bike and I rise a diamond back and I'm 15. You should make a video on how to apply skills on the trail. Naturally for example when I do a endo turn on the street it's hard for me to apply it on a trail etc.
Awesome job man
That was helpful, thank you!
15k subs since I subbed not that long ago. You are doing youtube right my friend.
same
bitch please, dude has almost one million now
watching every vid and liking
This guy rules!
@1:52 That black circle framing from the 90s skate/bmx videos! Taking me back to the days when we would put a TP roll in front of the lens rather than have a crazy fisheyed lens haha
You are the best !
Good vid 👍🏻
Those bunny hops are impressive. Im 47 years old and can still do a few tricks like that but not as high.
Please Seth you have to make some videos about fat bikes!!!! Many thanks!!! That'll be fun to watch....
Thanks you really helpt me i can finally bunny hop now
i lobed that ending and your nearly 50k i subed at 5k
im trying this , this weekend !! lol good luck to me!
you are soo talented and cool thanks for you help
Excellent!
Maybe next time you should make a video on how to bunnyhop on a full suspension mtb with a high seat. That would be the hardest i guess! I have a full suspension mtb with its saddle set at almost the highest it can be. It makes pedaling efficient but it makes bunnyhops or even wheelies very hard. I have no dropper post so i cannot change the saddle height on the go. If it is possible it will be very helpful! I love your videos! Keep it up!
Just take your tool and drop it, then bring it back up later
Fuck ya man! I'm just starting bmx and MTB at age 28. Some of the most fun and bruises I've ever had!
+tom frankfooter welcome to the club, I am almost 30 now :P ( few months left)
well you may be short/small, but you've got serious power going on. nice vids.
Excellent channel, has anyone told you that you look like a young john mcenroe ? cool
Thanks Seth
Hi Seth I love your video.
Can you ride 29er to do all these tricks? I'd love to see you riding 29er doing tricks!
Hah, your BMX clips from 2002 are in at my highschool on Lawn Guyland!
Was pretty sure you were from NY when I heard you say BAWLS in a few previous videos. This video confirmed that, lol
A helpful tip for full suspension is to turn the low speed compression all the way up if you have that adjustment. This makes it so the suspension won't fall into its travel as easily when you push on it but if have a big impact it'll still move. It's basically a blow off valve.
Just met Seth awesome experience
seth-you should make a couple of videos that arent tutorials;just you shredding on a trials bike, or doing some bmx lines at a skate park. i would love to watch those.
+Chet Brazier thanks, I actually sorta do that, but usually put a spin on it like "morning mountain bike ride" or "mtb skatepark". You guys have requested a lot of these so I'll keep doing them!
thanks very helpful
you make it look easy bro! who said you are not and athlete?
Seth I just wanted to say your the shit and keep up the good work;)
This is the only video that says lift up you feet. So its the best
Hey Seth, I'm planing on getting a (stance giant) duel suspensions. How well does your bike preform, pros and cons?
Hey Seth. I am getting to learn the motion but still needed more motivation. Can you please upload a bunny hop video but this time with FRONT and REAR view or even on a chest mount POV. It should help me visualize what it looks like. Thanks.
Nice man! I also have bmx background (but i raced most of the time) and when i went full i had also big problems and i coudln't hop, manual or do any other things untill i learned how to preload bike (that came to me more with instinct).Btw how old are you?
Yo Seth, what is your opinion on old school BMXs and modern BMXs? I've been thinking about getting a Haro master or a RL20II and I honestly don't see anyone ride those anymore nor take the frame and put on some modern hardware(stems, cranks, bars, etc.) from a modern bike like WTP or Odyssey and make it do insane vert tricks and/or dance on it like RAD.
What do you think of a nashbar at1 or at2 for a first non-walmarty bike? It'll be used for some city and come offroad use.
How much practice!!!
Ive had my full suspension MTB for almost a year now and wanna start doing tricks/stunts. I looked at your videos and tried some stuff on my own. It didnt work out as planned. Turned out harder than i thought!
I'm riding hardtail for 2 years and i can do manuals, wheelies and small bunny hops. It took long for me
Im riding hardtail for 2 weeks and I can do wheelies and bunnyhops
@@dasKontroloer You cant learn bunny hop by riding 2 weeks. Maybe you can do 2-3 pedals.
@@meteturhan3505 idk, after practicing wheelies for 2 weeks i could do it as long as I wanted. Though manuals are a different story
2 weeks is more than enough time to learn to bunny hop. you can learn in 2 hours.
+Seth's Bike Hacks thanks for this, Seth! I was looking through your backlog specifically for this information.
Is there anything for Manual'ing? I can do this all-day for any distance on BMX. However on a 29" I find myself getting sucked into the rear tire. Ouch! I will keep looking around. I am sure you have addressed this.
Thanks!
Respect!!!
Hey seth good video! I was wondering do you persoanlly think it is easier to do a bunny hop on a Full sus of a hadtail thats a few pounds lighter? Thx
+Random Guy hardtails are easier, and rigids are the easiest
Thanks! Because some other youtubers say full sus is easier because the rear shock can help u bring the rear wheel up LOL. When you bunny hop, do you basically pull high with ur arms to bring up the rear wheel instead of trying to hook ur foot onto the pedals to get it up?
Calvin Guy yes
Calvin Guy
@@michaelnoah3795 manuals are 10x easier on hard tail. Then bunny hops rely on the manual. I found having my rear shock half open made it so much easier because it’s less downward pre load.
I've actually gotten a mongoose blackcomb off the ground. All 44 lbs of it. Surprisingly the frame has yet to crack. I may actually upgrade the forks, just to see how much more the frame can handle.
Hi Seth. I'm still unable to do bunny hop I can only lift the front wheel that's why i cant climb higher areas yet :( and not like what you do on your videos. But greatly thanks to your tutorial big help here. :) Ill keep practicing!
Hi seth your channel is amazing and i dont even have a mtb
Im planning to get a mtb next month and im thinking of getting the sync'r pro
I want to mess around in the street. And go at a trail club do you think that this is the right bike ?
+F flyer Thanks! I'm glad to maybe have helped you get into mountain biking. The Sync'r pro is overkill as a first mountain bike, but go for it if you have the money! The one thing I'll say is that the tires that come on it aren't too good for street. I plan on replacing them with a smoother tire with a smaller tread-still good for trails but better for cornering and jumping.
Hey Seth can you make a video on how to ride down a mtb on bigger and more steeper stairs please.
can you do a tutorial on how to sort of bounce / pivot like you did at 0:48 in your early morning on the rocks video
this is the video I've been waiting for since I'm a long travel full-sus rider. Thanks Mr. Seth!
nice video man...where are u from?
Your videos are Inspiring one, some thing we have got common it our height I am 5,5" and ironically I work in IT industry as well, profile is Linux Admin.
What do you think of the bulls wild cup 1? I broke my cheap GT and wanted something FS to stand the test of time. I just don't know enough about the components.
Thanks
I used to have that Tundra I made a pvc rack for it
YO seth, 5'6 with asthma! holla. and wheeze. anyway, any suspension tricks to make the full suspensions easier to get higher on
What model bike is that? (the grey and yellow one) And what mods have you done to it?
Seth can you make a video focusing on tips doing rear wheel hop? I tried many attempts but still can't hop I'm 12 years old the trick I an do is just endo, endo turn, ride backwards and wheelie
Hey Seth, I am a pretty small guy my self, 5.5ft. Do you recommend a small frame over a medium size?
You killed me with the 5 foot 4 web developer with asthma 😬.
Tried a bunny hop off a 1.5m table top. Bike went out on an angle to the side. I went sideways to the ground. Nec minut..... so much pain. Lol. Pretty much landed on my arm tucked into my rib cage. So many joint sprains in my back and ribs. Think I need to go back to bunny hopping on the flats.
Just think of it as scooping the pedals up with your feet to get the rear of the ground
Huntington represent! Hahaha
Ive just started up enduro training and right now my whole body is on fire. And thats only after a pretty calm 2 hour ride with a 30 minute break. This adventure will be a long and hard one.
+John Karsten you're doing yourself right though, you'll be a beast
+John Karsten After some weeks that late muscular pain disapear or decrease, it happens too after a strong workout
+Dennis Castilho I've expirenced that, pain kicks of after my long distance ride, unfortunately I only get to do it only once a week.
+pushkar madan Im trying to get in a hour ride going up only hills each day
John Karsten Having accessibility to hills is great advantage, I have to ride almost 56 kms to do an uphill of 8km, which I can do only on weekends. on usual days I do like 1 hr of riding in early morning, roughly 12km because of the time factor.
hey bro, i saw you had a c guide eco on your trek hardtail, may I know where do you get it from?
they longer make the ones he has. there's a diffrent version which I have and it works great so far (:
@seth can make a tutorial how to jump in a full suspension?
Because when I jump my full suspension I’m going nose dive
And in the hardtail doesn’t
I attempted something similar to what you did at the end (where you jumped off the bed of the truck) once, except it was off a picnic table and I didn't really know how to bunny hop properly so I ended up face planting in the dirt. Oops.
It's a wheelie drop. just do a wheelie off of any cliff, you don't have to hop the bike
I don’t have a full suspension I just have front shocks should I do the same thing or do it a different way
Hey Seth, What size bike do you ride?
Hi Seth, can you make a video like you did on the walmart mongoose but can you do it on a walmart fat bike please make one.
close to the 1m :o
