Traxxas Xmaxx 8s - 3 Things To Consider Before You Buy

  • Traxxas Xmaxx 8S is still the reigning king of bashing RC. Highly sought after and so tempting to buy every time you see one on the shelf at the hobby shop. Here are three things often overlooked that you should consider to make the proper decision if the mighty Xmaxx is in fact a good fit for your style.
    The real story behind this video is this, if we go back 30 years you will find a 12 year old version of myself who had worked multiple paper routes for months and months to save enough money to buy my first Traxxas nitro hawk. Unfortunately I had no guidance from anyone with experience within the hobby and ended up with all my hard earned money invested in a truck I was rarely able to use. Not fully understanding everything required to make this truck run and the area necessary to use it Quickly made what was a very happy and proud purchase the source of let down and frustration. The purpose of this video is to help anyone that it can to avoid that type of feeling. There are many awesome products out there but not choosing the right product to fit your lifestyle environment and options will leave you feeling less than satisfied and potentially spoil your opinion of this hobby. This video is in no way suggesting that you should not buy an Xmaxx, they are undoubtably the best basher money can buy, it’s simply to shed some light on some required and necessary components you will need to enjoy this product and avoid looking at $1200 sitting in the corner of a bedroom wishing you had bought a 1/10 scale for $400 that you have room to use.

    I cannot stress just how important it is to watch this if you are thinking of buying an xmaxx… people often underestimate just how much grunt these things have and in the wrong hands can pose as a danger to people, animals and property. They are, big, heavy, fast and can fling stones hard enough to smash a window or take an eye out… as a veteran xmaxx owner, I have warned people to really have a think before buying one… and this video further backs my recommendations. Nice one dude 👍

    I happen to get mine, a few years ago. First thing that happened, after buying batteries etc. Is that I took it over to show my sister, with out practicing with it first. ( It was on full mode, not practice mode. ) And what happened? ( Stepping up from a Walmart special RC car. ) It was running just fine, until I ran it out of control. And hit her tree dead on / full speed. 🥲
    We both laughed about it. We both mentioned, this needs more of an open field / track. Still love it. 🥰
    Three sets of tires
    Still trying to get the electrics, to link back up. 😩
    So, I can put my new paddle tires on. ( Use your imagination. 😁 )
    Yes, it does become expensive. Expect, to pull out the funds. For a blast of having fun, being a kid again. 👍👍

    This was a great video! Ironically, I just bought a used green 8S X-Maxx off Craigslist. Came with two lightly-used 7.6Ah 4S batteries for $775. I figure that's about $500 less than all this would have cost new, plus sales tax. The body had some cracks in the back and the old graphics, so I bought a replacement new one that's identical to yours. So now it looks like a new X-Maxx, plus I can still use the original body as a beater. And yeah this thing is a potentially dangerous BEAST ... but so much fun!

    WOW, your points are spot on. My Beautiful Bride surprised me with one, to go with my other 45 cars, apparently after seeing me flip one over at the LHS, and she thought that she saw me drool or something. Roughly 7 years now and I’ve run it about that many times. Lug this tank around to run it for an hour -OR- take a couple 1/10 SCT’s and run them for 4-5 hours?

    Good points. I prefer the bigger trucks myself even though I do have some smaller ones like the Granite BLX. The Granite breaks often and I've had to upgrade a few things to make it as durable as the Xmaxx honestly. It is more expensive to run the bigger rigs, but more fun. I also have a the Outcast 8s and EXB K8S. Check them out in my channel. Subscribed. Last Sunday my son knocked me over with the Xmaxx, so yeah, it does more damage if it hits you or something else 😅🤣

      @@SonoranScaleStudios First the plastic spur gear stripped after like 5 runs, stock tires suck (wet with the M2C 17mm hexes and proline 2.8 tires), rear control arms broke quickly (replaced with rpm ones), rear top bulkhead broke after like 7 runs, the plastic pivot balls all whore out quickly (ordered some HR metal pivot balls and bell crank), the steering sucks, stock shocks are weak and the shock shafts bend easily. So yeah. The stock motor mount bent like crazy, destroying the pinion (replaced with m2c motor mount). So lots of upgrades have gone into this thing to make it more bashable. The Maxx 4s that I had before was way more durable. I also destroyed the driveshafts (replaced with gpm metal ones). So lots of issues.

    People who have never owned or ran one won't understand what you mean about the risk of injury fully. Until you have seen a 30# truck coming at you are 50mph on the back tires you wont know. These things will break stuff not bruise you lol. I have a rustler and an XMAXX. 1 thing between them, the X-Maxx will run absolutely anywhere. Through the woods, over anything. After an hour you realize the cool jumps you hit with your 10th scale are just a bump for the truck. I have my rustler basically with every part made other than the ecu/motor as of now. My xmaxx is getting a widemaxx kit while I watch this, led lights, and a few other parts. Rustler, I have 2500 in from my last list. Xmaxx was 1000 plus each battery pair is about 260/280 range. 4 batteries and $700 parts list times, you will wrap us $2-2500 very easily in an XMAXX. Worth every penny!!!!! They are just insanely fun to drive.

    I would like to add another caveat to this. You have to pay to play. After your initial purchase price, consider the operating costs. Things do wear out and break. Even if things go well, there is a cost to maintaining and fixing these, especially for those who are not mechanically inclined.

    • @SonoranScaleStudios
      @SonoranScaleStudios  Před 2 lety +1

      That sure is the truth! I have been pleasantly surprised to find despite their size Xmaxx replacement parts are pretty reasonably priced however there’s no avoiding the fact that you will need to buy them at some point so the expense goes on as you pointed out.

  • @Bryzle1
    @Bryzle1 Před rokem

    I would argue that the size of the Xmaxx opens many more opportunities to run in more places because it can simply do more than a 1/10 scale. You are limited to where you can run a 1/10 scale because the obstacles are too big. Not so with this truck. As for as the danger….uh, who runs their machines around lots of people? Yes, a person can get hurt. It weighs 24 pounds. If it hits anything at speed, something is going to get broken. A leg even. It’s called being responsible. If your kid is irresponsible, this is definitely not for them. It should not be considered a toy. It can do damage. I even geared mine down to help with this. Still is a blast to run, and yes, it is still quite dangerous.

      I use Zeee Lipos which of course are cheap. I was talking about doubling the cost of batteries versus a 1/10 truck using a single 3s or 4s pack as the Xmaxx requires two 3s or 4s. Not that the price of batteries doubles the cost of the Xmaxx.

    • @SonoranScaleStudios
      @SonoranScaleStudios  Před rokem

      Thank you for sharing my friend, this is exactly my point. A newcomer to the hobby or a child that has been saving hard earned money can easily end up with a total bill approaching double the MSRP of the truck without proper research in preparation. A high-quality charger and high-quality batteries can be had from alternate sources for 1/5 to 1/4 the cost of traxxas namebrand equipment. There are advantages to using Traxxas equipment undoubtably especially regarding warranty related issues and Traxxas is known for high-quality products. With that said I still choose to stick with my inexpensive Amazon batteries and charger and save that extra money to go towards more trucks! Thanks again for sharing the pricing, sometimes it makes it easier when people can just simply see the numbers.
