I’m curious why you wouldn’t just put the beaker on the scale and zero it out and add the powder to the beaker? Or zero out the scale with the jar of powder on it and measure a negative grams measurement as you spoon directly into the jar you’re going to store it in? Why can’t you measure into the jar and just shake it well to mix?

Hi, Thanks for the videos... Q: Does it matter what type of water to use? Tap (I have well-water) or store bought Distilled or Drinking water? Thanks

Thanks for the video. My frother really frothed! Like, I’ve got 1.5” of “foam” ... I’m wondering if I should scoop it off and add the room temp water or just be patient and leave the foam to eventually dissipate?

I have a kitchen and a garage area but with no sink, I could use a hose. Where should I dye? Should I make my dye stock in the garage and dye in the kitchen?
Do everything in the garage? I’m assuming it’s not safe to dump dye baths on the ground in case they pollute the ground water?

Is there a reason not to just place the beaker on the scale and add the dye directly in to it? Or is that just preference?

    • @TheMakersCorner
      @TheMakersCorner Před 3 lety

I imagine it would be harder to remove excess powder from the beaker if you accidentally used too much but that's definitely more of a preference

The beaker might be heavier than the scale's maximum weight capacity.

Easier would be to put the jar of powder on the scale and remove powder until it’s -3. If you go over you are right back to the jar. And measure into the jar you’re storing it in.

Do you use regular tap water, filtered water or distilled water?

ugh thank you! learning how to dye now. Did great with a 'starter kit'. but now learning how to do the 1% and how much water, and how much yarn it will dye, etc. I'm not frustrated, but I am confused. Thank you for helping! Shelburnefallsyarn

Instead of the top of the scale, I put the container I mix the dye in on the scale , less to wash

Do you have to store the dye in glass? Can you use plastic?

Can you tell me the name of the acid dye that is needed..you showed two colors in the videos..do we need to prepare both??...and can you tell me the name of the thread washing agent??

my scale is not sensitive enough to depict a single gram, would in most cases 1 teaspoon be a guesstimate ... I am just doing fun dyeing but I do want to have reasonable predictability in case I want to reproduce a color I fall in love with? I have seen this quantity elsewhere but they did not state the percentage, just 1t. I will watch your previous video as well.

I would say it is a good place to start of you can't measure in grams. You can always do a paper towel test to see if you need more or less. For fun absolutely! You still have some control.

How do you know how much of that dye solution to add to the dyebath? Say what you are dying is 50g?

  • @mcruz2187

How long can you keep the dye solution stored once is prepared? Thanks

Good Question. It depends on the color but I use mine for as many as 2 months after I make them. I do find certain colors start to "crash out" after about 3 weeks and I just throw them away. Hope this helps.

KnottyWood Yarn thanks. I just got my first set of dyes and wanted to mix enough for 1-2 skeins, but always end up with extra solution. Thanks a lot!

Why not just put the beaker on the scale and tare it, and measure the dye directly into the beaker? Seams like creating something to wash by using the lid and transferring the dye powder. Not to mention sending more dye particles floating and losing it in your stock solution.

What about dubbing or voice over?
