- Have a thermostat giving you weird readings or operating different than you're used to. Joshua Griffin goes through how each thermostat has a dead band where the thermostat will turn off after reaching temperature and turn back on. Your thermostat may be operating correctly. They may have a deadman set up to be more efficient for your home rather than short cycling.

Hi. I'm not sure if you will read this. What is going on when the unit continues to run for a long amount of time after reaching the set temperature on the display?
What do you mean it doesn't matter? My thermostat says it's 59 in my bedroom and my thermometer says its 71. That's a big difference and it makes my heater run all the time.
Well it doesn't apply if it reaches temp and doesn't shut off. I was simply pointing out it doesn't matter if it's exactly matching a thermometer
You could have a duct work issue
Many things could be your issue. Could be voltage, or lack of insulation or air flow through inside the walls
Accuracy matters when your thermostat is part of a conservation program where the electricity provider takes control of it during periods of high power consumption. The temperature they select may not be comfortable if your thermostat is inaccurate.
You can usually disable that in the app!
I normally have my thermostat on hold at 72 degrees. Recently had some issues where I wasn't getting any heat. Thermostat was working. There was an issue with heating unit. Owner fixed issue and in order to test it had me set thermostat at 80. It went up to 74 and but then never went up to 80 degrees. It never went up to the 80 degrees thermostat was set to. Does this mean there is still something wrong or is this normal?
I have a 3 bed 1 bath apt unit that’s not heating properly. Sometimes the thermostat reads 70 but the living room is noticeably not 70 degrees. It’s not problematic in the living room and the medium sized bedroom. Would moving the thermostat help? The living room has a return vent but the medium sized bedroom doesn’t. Small bedroom and master warm up perfectly. Small doesn’t have a return vent and master does. Any ideas on what might be the issue?
Hello. I have a Bryant heat pump/ac. For some reason my thermostat is not giving the correct outdoor temp reading any longer. Example: its 76 degrees outside, but my thermostat says its 136 degrees. My auxiliary heat typically comes on when the outside temp is somewhere in the area of 35 degrees. At that point I just turn my heat pump off and start a fire in the house, to keep warm. When then auxiliary heat strips come on it more than doubles my energy bill. That’s no bueno. With my thermostat not reading correctly I have had the auxiliary heat kick on when it’s 65 degrees outside. Do you have any idea of what the issue may be and how I can go about fixing it? Thank you so much.
Old house have two thermostats. Heater reading 72 evap reading 78. Set another thermometer next to it it drops to 72 as well and the cooler stays at 78. Evap takes for ever to drop to turn the unit off once hose is cooled. Think it’s just bad tried cleaning vents but still always reads high until the evening. When the whole house is actually cold. Time to replace or is there a fix?
Perfect explanation! Thank you.
My thermostat doesn't turn on or off on the auto???? What should I do
Hi, my english is very bad, sorry, I have honeywell thermostat and I set the ac at 70 and my house fell very nice but the termostat shows 84, which is the problem? Thanks in advance
I have a humidity control thermostat that is 10-12° different than what's on the thermostat. Should I replace or just ride with it? Thanks
My situation is different. I set the themo-stat at 80* when i am away. When i got home the house is comfortabily cool, I heard the ac running, i check and the therno stat is reading 74 in the house while still set at 80 degree. If this ban is to keep the ac from turning on when the temp is way below the set temp.. what is your take on on this
How can I set the deadband or the differential set if possible on my ICM thermostat?
I have a scenario that the thermostat won’t adjust to my required temperature. It is too cold and I can’t adjust the temp, any help!
i have 4 wireless. honeywell room thermostats, new ones, after putting the batteries etc, they show room temperature = 18.5 C .. while it is about 10 C... any idea why and how can this be fixed ? i mean this kind of deviation seems too big ..... normal deviation is 1~2 degree C
for some reason my thermostat is showing a negative temperature.
My problem is the A/C part of the thermostat. I can put it on 76 and it will go up to 78 without me changing it. Why? Thanks
I just had a brand new furnace installed and now my thermostat temp is not working properly. sometimes the thermostat is STUCK at a temperature. And the furnace keeps going and going and going but the temperature reading never changes. I have purchased a brand new thermostat and it does the same thing. Is there something wired wrong with this brand-new furnace? It is a variable speed two-stage furnace...
Hi my thermostat reads way off. My air is set at 69, the other side reads could be 96 the 20mins later 39. Air conditioner is working....what is happening
Got a new construction house, AC is set to 75, temp is reading 69. It’s been high 70s, low 80s where I’m at the past couple of days, AC has never turned on. Just got the house so AC hasn’t been on. What could the issue be?
My problem is that thermostat said it reached 70 degrees and turns off but house is like 80 would you recommend something? Thank you
Mine isn't reaching the temp it's set at. I set it at 72 but it only reaches 74. What could the problem be?
Replaced our thermostat because it was resetting itself and also not going on when I have the temperature set on 74. It would eventually go on and cool. It is currently 76 but the Ac is set for 74. It will go on when it reaches 78 and cools it down. Why would that happen?
How might I be able to resolve an issue where thermostat is set at 72 but for some odd reason the system warms up my home to 82?
so are you saying, for example, when dead band is 1 degree (for cooling), it should run until desired temp is set.. let's say you want the desired temp to be 75 degrees. your thermostat shows 74 or 76. AC kicks in then turns off in 5 mins. Fan is still spinning for another 2 mins or so. temp change of degree doesn't take long in hot weather so AC kicks back in about 10 mins or so. Does this sound normal?
honeywell set at 69 feels like 51 reading 66 its so bad if you sit anywhere near a vent you need a blanket or coat ....... any suggestions
I set my window AC at 70, but it will not come on until it's 76 in the house, and it will not shut off until it's 66 in my house. There is a 10° dead zone on my 8000 BTU AC. How could I make the dead zone shorter?
I set mine at 71 and the inside temp says 75 or 76. I don't know what to do
What if the temperature is not shutting off and its dropping to like 60 when the house is set to 75?
Thank you very much ! This really helped explain my situation !!
You’re welcome!
One year had the central ac run warm/neutral air. AC Tech changed condenser. Then he changed the solenoid switch that didn’t switch warm air to cool. Within 4 months later our central ac would constantly run all day to the point our ac bill got around $750. We called for another ac tech because we saw ice close by the tunnel where we slide the air filter in our central ac unit in the attic (Texas mind you) and he said we didn’t have enough freon and charge about $120 to fill it and fixed it.
I have np AC but when I try to manually control and hold the temp at say 64 it then jumps to 70 or 72 and is way to warm for us, especially upstairs. My system never did this before. I even bought a new thermostat and did the same thing. There are only a red and a white wire coming out of the wall and they're hooked correctly. I did have to re-light the pilot light. I haven't used the heater since last winter. What else can be wrong?
It seems to be a lot of newer thermostats that are doing this.
Ours is an old thermostat and its dropping to low 60s overnight when it shouldn't.
Thermostat like anything else do fail and with the electronic ones it can be hard to tell sometimes. Ours appeared to be working fine but it turned out to not be reading temps correctly. It would go up fine but when it came to going down it had a problem and after 10 min a fridge that was 4 degrees it only made it to 18.
Thank you for this good info. My issue is, the thermostat is just stuck at 70. Weather air or heat. It’s turning off and on with Auto while on heat. I just can’t change the temperature.
Sounds like it may have gone bad or the buttons aren't working? May be a good idea to get a pro in there
Thanks for that interesting information. I have a thermostat that when my wife does laundry and she turns on the Dryer, since the thermostat is connected by the wall of the laundry room. I have set up my thermostat to 77 in the house and when the dryer goes On the temperature in the thermostat goes up to 78 and the AC stays running for a long time until the dryer stops. I will like to know , do you think my thermostat is going bad or something else going On. Thank you for the info.👍
Great video
I’m having a problem with what I’m assuming is my thermostat. I have a White Rodgers model number 1F-80-361 I have the desired tempature number (small number on the right to be 72 degrees the tempature on the thermostat says it’s 76 and for whatever reason lately it hasn’t been reaching 72 degrees. It’ll stay stuck between 76 and 85 degrees and sometimes the desired tempature will change on its own to 85 degrees and idk what’s going on do you have any ideas what this could be?
That sounds like my system..I have a brand new furnace...I have called the contractor. My old system this never happened. I think it is a faulty system..maybe bad power supply wrong voltage or something else
my thermostat is reading 81 and the a.c won't turn off. i need to turn it off manually. also cool is flashing on and off on the screen.
I have a room that I pay to heat but its a public space. Its a T86a7x103a1 mercury. Has 3 wires to it blue brown and yellow. Id show a pic of the back. But this space doesn't allow. For 9 years its been set to 50 as thats the lowest it would go. But lately its heating to 70 and I'm using an extra 300 per month in fuel cost. Would this be an easy diy or have a pro come or handyman?
I’d say have a pro take a look
So nothing to worry about when I set the thermostat at 75 but the AC doesn't come on until it's 77 degrees?
Need advice please. I have a Honeywell Vision Pro and it's been taking a long time for the heat to kick in. It didn't kick in until it hit 58° last night! So I set it to 74° on the 600 setting and 67° on the 610 setting. But it's still not turning on at 67°, still waiting until it hits 58° or 57°. Trying to stay within 67° - 74° range, especially now with these low 20 temperatures of late. 🌨❄
Eek! 58º is cold! I'd say call a pro. It's probably the thermostat, but it could be something else too.
@@NewHVACGuide It's starting to go on at 62° as of last night and this morning. But will call a pro soon. Thanks
My thermostat is not adjust set 72 and thermostat say 80 doesn't go down??
I think after watching your video, I have a deadband of 3 degrees. My thermostat reads 70 but the actual temperature in the room is 67. I’m I wrong and if so. What would you recommend?
Deadband is something different. However, some thermostats allow you to change the ambient temp shown
@@NewHVACGuide thanks for the heads up.
What you want to change is the offset
I have a Pro t701 thermostat. The fan will work. But I cannot get the digital temperature to change. The room temperature says 74°, set at 73°. THE ACTUAL TEMPERATURE IN THE HOUSE IS 64°. What can I do?
Hello. I’d call a pro to help. It could be something simple but it may be something more involved.
My rubbery button to increase the heat temperature doesn't work... Its blank. I have new batteries & the other button works to lower the heat. Therefore I get no heat. ????
We have a new furnace and thermostat plus wiring to thermostat. We have it set on 68 it reads at least 10 to 12 degrees higher. My mom is 90 and it is her house and she is complaining that the house is too hot. I tried calling the furnace manufacturer, they will only give tech support to the installer who is on a cruise. Any suggestions would be helpful. We only have heat no AC .
Wow. Wish I could take a cruise… definitely sounds like a pro needs to get in there. Could be something simple but also could be something crazy
What does it mean when the inside temp is blank
Mine don't shut off anymore because inside temp is rising and what I set it at don't match. Way off.
When thermostat keep run does that mean fan on auto
I set my at 76 and I been noticing for serval months it would turn off then I notice it feel real hot and I check the thermostat and it somehow jumped to 85 , I changed the batteries and haven’t had that problem since , I been changing the filter every month checking the pipes to make sure water not trapped idk what the problem was
Low batteries? 🙂👀
@@NewHVACGuide I’m guessing so , because I been changing the filters n checking the pipes Nuño it the oridinary tho
just had a new thermostate put in and a new furance and when i set it to 68 it never kicks on cuz the room temp says its 70 all the time even when its 25 outside its claiming its 70 so if bump heat setting to 72 then the room temp will say 72 to it seems they both always say the same thing for it to kick on
Definitely might want to have a pro take a second look at that
American Standard Gold 824 reads high on the thermostat while the actual air temp is 5+ degrees lower. Unit wants to run and run trying to get down to the set temp of 77 degrees. External thermometer will say 71 degrees and the 824 will say 80. Oh, and the thermostat is brand new. Installed by a certified American Standard dealer. Can't wait to see this month's electricity bill!!
What about thermostat off but boiler keeps running water
First! haha. Great video. I'd be sure to mention that deadband issues are much less of a concern with VRF type systems, since they scale automatically in a much narrower band.
Good point!
Great video!!!
Thank you!
My question is why is my temp set to 75 and I wake up and it’s 66 in the house granted it’s cold out side but shouldn’t the heat come on to match the set temperature ?
Sounds like something is wrong pal. Get a pro in there!
Why do you constantly refer problems to a pro? Ppl are asking you questions for advice all you can say is call a pro. Either help these ppl or shut down your channel. This is very frustrating.
Is that a small bottle of whiskey by your right shoulder and wine by your left? 😜
Mine is completely wacko. I'll turn it on it'll read like 18 degrees, I set it to 20. Goes to 20 turns off then sometimes it never comes back on. Other times it comes on and doesn't turn off. It'll get so hot in here like 25 degrees and the thermostat reads 19. They were even replaced by the landlord and it still does it.
My Hunter thermostat is set on a schedule. About an hour before the schedule changes the heat turns on when the setpoint is lower? Example is actual temp in 66 and setpoint is 62.
Heat turns on. I'll manually change the setpoint from 62 to 63 and it'll shut off until the schedule changes.
Definitely sounds like it’s malfunctioning and may need to be replaced
Modern day Honeywell thermostats have a room temperture calibration button on them, that lets your calibrate your thermostat to the actual temperture of the room, and then from there your room setting temperture will be more accurate then otherwise.
Where is it
Please help. Thermostat is on 76. AC won't stop on 76 no matter what temperature is outside.
Do you have the fan in the auto position? Are you saying the outdoor unit continues to run as well? Are you sure it’s a problem with the thermostat? Could be a problem with the system as well
Heating and cooling checked system yesterday and no issues. Today my AC won't stop blowing on 76 but it is 67 outside (it is 10:30 p.m.) Please help.
@@NewHVACGuide fan is on auto. New filter. Yes continue running.
Why would the pipe on baseboard is 65 degrees. But it’s 55 in the house.
I have mine set at 67 but it says 78 .. does anyone know what that means
Mines doing the same
Mine set to 72 and heat up to 90 degrees i was in hell
My thermostat shows 77 as room temperature and set temperature is 70 is this normal
This seems to be my issue right now with my Trane. It’s cooler in this house than 77. I have no clue what’s going on.
@JG4AU we called someone and they replaced are thermostat and did a yearly inspection for it might have to call someone but basically I think behind are thermostat is loose wires that come unconnected
Sorry I hate this thermostat it’s saying 82 in the house I can’t even low it if I try it moves to the other setting and in the night it’s really hot I’ll be itching it’s crazy
What about if the temperature is not triggering the a/c to shut off. My energy bill will be significant. How do I fix this? Thanks.
I have the same problem Temp set at 71 thermostat reaches 71 but A/C keeps on running .
Trimaksih bos
My thermostat is set on 74 but the A/C cuts off at 79. Can anyone help me?
Might need to call a pro
@@NewHVACGuide Thanks for responding so quickly
check if you have any heat generating around the thermostat sensor whether it is portable device or big whole in drywall. Thermostat will shut off sooner thinking it has reached 79 because it senses heat which is confusing the built-in sensor. No need to call pro
Why does mine read 24.5? I need help!!!
Celsius??
Mine is set to 73 and showing 77 in the house. And it's not coming down.
Time to call a pro!
I have a problem with my mini split not coming on in AC mode when I set the thermostat down to say 66F and it’s 75F or 80F in the room. It usually won’t come on until I bring the thermostat setting down to 63°F. This is a brand new system that I installed less than a month ago. The system is made by comfortotal. I live in Northeast Mississippi and the humidity is quite high here.
Okay I have a concern, my thermostat is saying it's anywhere between 97-99 degrees in my house, when the actual temperature is around 66. Now when I disconnect it from the house for a time, and connect it back at the start it will read correctly before it shoots up again. So I assume the sensor has a issue, but am not really sure how to inspect it.
I should add this is a thermostat I've used for a long time 5+ years, and it just started happening the last 3 days.
accuracy does matter
Amen. Accuracy matters because when thermostat goes out, AC will keep running non-stop and your electric bill will be double.
Mine set to 74⁰ but it's 70⁰ freezing 3 zomes
How to cool you house without a large Electric Bill?
If thermostat set at 50 but it is 80 degrees in house
My thermostat is staying on 88 and not cooling off, with the air conditioner on
Sounds a pro needs to take a look
check your filter or find out if there is any heat around the thermostat before calling a pro
I want to change the thermostat to say 76 degrees but it’s actually 72. My coworker is killing me with the fucking heat at a shared office. If he sees 76, and it’s really 72, we’d both be happy. It ain’t that it’s too cold, dude just looks at the number.
Gotcha. You can change the reading 🙂
👍👍😊
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🔥
The 'deadband' is called a hysteresis
Thermostat is stuck on 25 degrees and won’t change
Wrong title. You never covered how to recalibrate the thermostat.
Pro
Who the hell cares about accuracy i dont as long as it keeps me warm or my waterpipes from freezing and bursting when its very cold out side
I'm with you on this. But some folks are concerned if there's a degree difference!
0:42 LOL. Spoken like a guy who doesn’t have to pay the electric bill. *The number matters.* 💀
Thank You! It must have been me. You answered my questions to a "T!" I subscribed to your Website. FL. Is where I reside. +10👌👩🏼🦰
