    To be honest, and I know this is an old upload, I don’t think you made the correct call this time. You may have already rethought about what your actions were, but I don’t know.
    Now, this is only my take on what I could see, I may have missed something.
    So, as you approach the junction with possible merging traffic, you see the vehicle behind doing something stupid. Your action was to change lane, into the lane that is the one that does pose the most danger, the merging traffic. I don’t know if you did that because you tried to prevent the other driver doing something stupid or, you decided to ‘police’ the situation yourself? Either way I think your action in this case was wrong, and it’s only my personal experience and opinion.
    What you should have done was check the 2nd overtaking lane, and if safe move to there and completely get yourself out of any higher risk situation. You cannot take into account the other drivers on the road state of mind or intelligence, you don’t know them, they could be a complete fool who doesn’t even have a licence.
    So drive defensive, make sure you are not a contributing factor, my worry would be by ‘blocking their undertake’ you unwittingly trigger an arsehole road rage event. I know it may seem a stretch, but I have seen it all.
    I’ve been crashed into while stationary, because some idiot had to change lanes, his trailer ripped the front of my car off, but he then blamed me and threatened to ‘knock me the f*** out’, I’ve had an idiot tailgating and flashing headlights while I was slowing for a big accident ahead, they undertook, gave me the single finger as he piled his car into stationary traffic, I have to admit they deserved it, but not the people who he smashed into.
    My point is the roads are dangerous places, there are idiots everywhere, I have learned over many years it’s much better to place my vehicle, my car or motorcycle in the best place for my survival, whether that’s financial or physical.

    That Ford focus was terrible. However it's similar to what happened to me on a 2 lane duel carriageway. A lady stayed in the right lane in a Hyundai i10 I was at 70mph in left lane I had to overtake her in left lane. She held up traffic behind. Thankfully, she moved back to the left after I overlook. The cars behind were not happy. I'd have used 3rd lane if there was more than 2 lanes. Always important to keep to the left unless there's a reason

I pulled to the 2nd lane of the dual carriageway, to leave clear a blind slip road, then pulled back when i could see nothing coming up. The police car pulled me over. I once went on the M4 from London to Bristol, and from Reading there was a Merc in the middle lane. Between there and Bristol I passed the Merc six or more times. They went only in the middle lane at the speed of the traffic, if it was 50mph that is what they did while I passed on the outside at 70mph. When the middle lane was clear the Merc did 90+mph and came charging past only to slow at the next knot of traffic, and did this all the way to Bristol. That was more than 50 miles of driving just in the middle lane, and they showed little sense of any other traffic around them, just what was immediately in front in the middle lane. All too common these days, sadly.

    I'm approaching a junction that merges onto the motorway cruising at 60mph in the left lane, I find it's usually safest to accelerate up to 70mph & pull into the middle lane if traffic will be emerging to pass the danger point. But the traffic in this lane is reluctant to let me pull over, often when the right lane is empty or else people flash me in anger even when I pulled over well ahead of them. My current operating theory is pull over if safe to do so, maintain 70mph & proceed as normal. Tough if they are that desperate enough use the overtaking lane & exceed the limit.

    Just getting round to watching some of these, which lanes to use seems to confuse some people!, I had to do a online driver training course for work a few years back with multiple choice questions at the end, I failed first go so re did it until I worked out what answers it wanted, What lane do you use for normal driving on a multilane motorway, lane one, lane 2, lane 3, correct answer for quiz was lane 2, it also had one about driving in heavy snow or rain, correct answer was to drive in the ruts of the vehicle in front, how close do you need to be to be in the ruts in rain!. Sent in a list of corrections and questionable questions (safest place to park in car park?, depends on if risk is being hit by another vehicle or mugged), to the HSE manager, training course rapidly disappeared.

I have to say I rather liked the Ford Ka, turned in nicely and was very predictable, while the Merc was predictable, save for all the electronic nonsense, it was a bit of a wallowy old boat, it was comfortable A to B but certainly not a particularly enjoyable or engaging drive, whereas the Ka was both enjoyable and engaging (I would do a wink smiley, but I'm not sure how).

    I can agree that when people see L plates they act like idiots, saying that people still like idiots regardless but L's are a magnet for people wanting to pass or being offended that a learner car has passed them lol. When I was learning to drive couple of weeks ago, joined onto the dual carriageway from the roundabout, got into the left lane nice and early, and a lorry had the cheek to want to overtake me although I was gaining speed at a fast rate... people are... strange... how they get a licence I dunno.
    If everyone was to act proper on the road and follow the rules, there would be less accidents, traffic jams and road rage, but hey, can't have everything now can we! haha. Glad I passed last Tuesday and got rid of the L's at least I look like regular traffic now and people are less tempted to overtake me or do silly stuff to just get 1 car ahead of me!

    • @collinslfc
      @collinslfc Před 7 lety +2

      Trust me, if you stick to the speed limit people are tempted to overtake or do silly stuff regardless if you have L plates or not. Just last night, I was on a dual carriageway that had a restricted speed limit of 40mph, which I was doing. It was clear ahead of me, admittedly, but the car behind me thought it would be best to do 60mph+, only to get stopped by a red traffic light half a mile ahead. We ended up at the same set of lights, it's just he had to sit there idling at a stop longer than I did.

      @TheRebel112 Před 7 lety

      One thing I was expecting after the L's were off was when like for example when at rounderbouts being slow going off (still getting used to the bite point on my car) to expect people beep behind as with an Learner driver they tend to hold back a bit, but nope, seems that there are decent people out there!

  • @jaseman
    @jaseman Před 3 lety

    Drivers don't keep to one speed. They might decide to drive at one speed for a while and then they change it. It could be down to what song they are listening to, how tired they are, how distracted they are or what mood they are in. Sometimes they just decide they don't want to be behind a certain vehicle... or they don't want a particular vehicle to be in their rear mirror. When people see a learner car - they think the driver might do something erratic - and they just want to get well away from them.

    I am now a CPC holder and, when I'm out on the road, I now have to accept a fundamental truth... 90-95% of drivers (road users in general) are even stupider than I am.
    The difference between them and me is simply that I'm willing to accept that I'm not a perfect driver. Like Einstein says "There are only two things which are infinite...".
    It goes back to the expression they have at Alcoholics Anonymous, "In life, you can be right, or you be happy"; out on the road I think that translates as "You can be right or you can be *safe*".
    A good attitude compensates for poor skills far better than good skills compensate for a poor attitude... understanding that basic logic is what got me through my PSV test (after only *four* attempts) and subsequent CPC.
    F@&% it! When in doubt, centre pedal (left pedal on m'bus) and give way. Just let them go; they're going to have an RTC anyway, it just doesn't have to be with me.
    Cheers Ashley, and be safe.

    In Aus, and Victoria at least, we are required, where possible, to move to the right to allow slip lane traffic to enter the freeway smoothly and without interruption. UNFORTUNATELY, a vast number of ' motorists ' believe it to be their God given right to do exactly as they please, and drive with NO regard for any other road user. Patience and courtesy are commodities sadly lacking on our roads these days, and look out if you dare hold up someone for longer than a second. Right Lane Hogs are also in abundance here, with people who are waaaaay too important to drive in lane one when traffic is light. Country Victorian freeways ( mostly two lane ) are their preferred habitat, where you see them chundering along at 5 - 10kph below the posted speed limit, or as their self entitlement allows them, 10 or 15kph above the posted speed limit.

    An interesting observation I have made in regards to peoples behaviour in cars vs on the street...In a car I can literally do something as Insignificant as drive to the speed limit and get abuse hurled at me by overtaking, irate drivers. The funny thing is, In the street I have had incidents in busy places where I have physically banged into people, and even knocked a bag out of someone's hands on the tube by being clumsy (by mistake obviously!). Every time they have been nice and understanding. Even sometimes apologising to me!!
    This should be considered far more offensive and annoying than the pretty things people go irate over while driving. Bizarre how someone's outlook & mentality seems to re-set and change once they climb in the vehicle. Unfortunately petty ego issues seem to plague males in particular in my opinion. The classic M.O is trying to dominate others via physical force. The intellectual, less physically able men switch that and seem to have the urge to do that same thing, but intellectually. It's like an inherent need to impose their will in some way, shape or form which in inherent in so many! Never quite twigging that the need to do this is in fact an advertisement for weakness via insecurity (the ironic opposite of what they are trying to project!). See it so much..Not a fan of men at all and I am a man lol

They don't have a clue about anticipating, but loves to insult people for doing things they don't like. I see many people complain about hogging in a lane and expect you to move over, even if you are not that far of the next vehicle you are going to overtake... If you don't you are the prick hogging in that lane. And see this on many reactions of dashcam footage. People start insulting, without having a clue of what happened and anticipating traffic. Besides that it's much easier to see things on a video than in real life.

    • @cigmorfil4101
      @cigmorfil4101 Před 5 lety +4

      That's the problem: "SHOULD" give way - some do not and staying in lane 2 until known traffic from the slip road is safer.
      Also, by being in lane 2 it helps those joining the motorway to join and could be thought of as driving with consideration for them as it allows them to accelerate along the slip road and to enter the motorway safely - the traffic is light enough that by staying in lane 2 that little bit longer it will not be inconsiderate to other road users already on the motorway. Once it is known to be safe to return to lane 1 (without possibly impeding the progress of another road user) then return to lane 1.
      There is nothing more frustrating than having your progress impeded unnecessarily when joining a motorway - lanes 2 & 3 are empty and someone on the motorway just sits in lane 1 blocking someone joining the main carriageway; there may be no law saying they must move over to let someone join, but to move over to let someone join is driving with consideration for that other road user and there is a law that requires that.
