  • In 2021, something extraordinary happened. A Seiko, from 2016, with a quartz movement, sold for just shy of $100,000 at auction. Granted, it was the Grand Seiko SBGD001, but nevertheless it puts a disparity between it and this-one of Seiko’s cheapest offerings, the SNXS79-of 1,000%. So, what does that extra $99,900 get you?

    As a happy owner of a 7S26-driven Seiko, I have grown used to setting it on Monday morning if I haven't worn it over the weekend or tweaking the minute hand a bit here or there once or twice a week for the reliability and style for the exceptionally low price-point. And for a small price upgrade, Seiko offers models with the 4R36 which offers hand-winding and hacking convenience.

    Glad to see another Seiko video. I recently finally bought my first watch. A Seiko King Turtle diver with ceramic bezel, saphire crystal, a 4R36 movement, day/date function, and hacking for $850 CA. This watch is seriously overlooked.

    • @mrtswift
      @mrtswift Před 2 lety +5

      Congrats on your purchase. They sell a truckload of turtles, king turtles included. Given a large number of variations within this family, the king sits above the basic turtles (non ceramic bezel models) and a small stretch away from the “superior” Willard remake models. I believe this makes buying the king a slightly interesting proposition. In addition to this, the seiko five sports sk5 was exploding hard , land tortoise was released not long after (better dimensions for me), both cheaper from memory. I don’t think the KING TURTLE was overlooked, I think it’s in that price point that pivots the buyers up or down.

      I have a friend who owns a chain of watch shops here in Bulgaria. They are made in china to his specification - all by machine obviously. And that is why fake Patek Philip etc are utterly indistinguishable.

    Seiko is really in its stride now: it's executing very good watch designs for all budgets, and at the same time bringing genuine technical and artistic innovation to the industry.
    They're also spreading the design and artistic innovation across all ranges, and not just limiting to the exclusive lines. The Presage range has stunning dials echoing the best of Grand Seiko, the Prospex range is adopting new materials and finishes. Even the 5 range gets into the game, with its limited edition anime models. Seiko is building long term relationships with watch enthusiasts at every level.
    Contrast this behaviour with some other brands: creating demand through artificial supply limits and double-digit %% annual price increases, limiting sales to customers based on historical purchases, and producing "new" models that are only re-skins of last year's, and basing most of your brand on one or two models that came out 50 years ago. Don't get me wrong, they do make very fine watches (and a few clunkers) , but innovation and artistry are not exactly thriving*.
    * Ok, every big brand does produce technology and artistic demonstrator, but they are so inaccessible to all but the ultra wealthy, and have zero influence on anything else they make... So what's the point

    The Seiko 5 has to be one the truely great watch brands of all time. One of the first solidly reliable affordable watches. If Alec Isegonis (spelling is not my thing) designed watches instead of cars he would have designed something very similar. I have one with the with the shield logo. The non hacking thing is annoying. I also have a modern hacking Seiko 5 with the "Suzuki" logo. I absolutely love it. It's a watch you can really wear and use unlike a collectable. A proper work horse. The accuracy is good enough. If accuracy is important then don't get a mechanical of any kind. The best bit is you can really have a blast with the straps. That means you can wear something that seems new interesting and different every day that is cheap as chips. If Primark did watches it would be a Seiko 5. You know what? I'm a bit of a flieger b person. I may well have one of those Seiko 5's too. Happy days 🙂.

    I love my seikos. I currently have 16 in my 18-watch growing collection. What is sad is they suffer from alignment issues on either their chapter ring or their bezels. (All but 2 of my seikos are divewatches). Even my most expensive seiko, the SNR029, still has a misaligned bezel. I was saving up to get the Grand Seiko SBGA375, but after discovering the alignment issue in my SNR029, i was so disappointed that i am now redirecting that money towards an omega smp diver's 300 instead.
    I will still give seiko my money, but until their alignment issues are fixed, im not going above the 1,000 dollar price points- at least the qc issues will not hurt as bad. 😁

      @Chrissepisje Před 2 lety

      I hate to say it, but in spite of the video we're reacting to, you can't compare Seiko and Grand Seiko in terms of fit and finish. You will not find flaws on the SBGA375. I've previously owned the SGBV239 and 245, now I have an SGBA465 and SGBP011, and no, I honestly can't compare them to anything else I find in my watch collection. Including the 10 or so Seiko's that surround them, including the limited King Seiko. GS is simply best.
      Secondly, if you expect dive bezels to align under all circumstances, don't break out a ruler and a macro lens, because you'll find that almost any rotating bezel can have some play or misalignment in some direction. It's a world of hurt for folks with OCD. I've had it on Glycines, Squales and a Halios myself, and I've seen it on Rolexes and Longines divers.... Hell, I've even held a Nautilus where the indice on 2 was crooked.
      If bezel alignment is such a thing for you, get a nice racing chronograph with a bi-directional bezel that just doesn't have clicks. :) Otherwise, the SBGA375 will serve you exceptionally well.

      @@GODOFLIQUOR This is obviously opinion but I really couldn't justify picking a Rolex over a spring drive. The spring drive is a more technologically advanced movement as is. I never really thought of buying a Rolex because of its movements, which are fairly simple as far was luxury watches go. The Rolex 3000 series movements are what going on to 30 years old now? I figure if you buy a Rolex its because its a Rolex, and that's good enough.
      I'm not going to say one company is better than the other, just that as far as movements are concerned I'd pick GS over Rolex. Opinion of course. As for finishing it would really depend on which models you compare between the two companies.

      Its not necessarily that they are complete garbage. Its more that usually you are getting a cheap quartz watch thats really worth maybe $50 but paying much more due to the name on it. I know many fashion watches are available unbranded on Aliexpress for much less. There are some exceptions with higher end brands having swiss made watches with decent quartz movements but youre still paying more for the brand and usually they are just plain ugly
