  • Just as Rolex is the brand everyone knows as the luxury watch to have, Seiko has the same reputation as the affordable, reliable go-to for those shopping on a budget. Very few have heard of Seiko’s big brother, Grand Seiko, and when they do, the inevitable response is one of shock; after all, why would anyone pay ten times the price of a standard Seiko for the addition of the word ‘Grand’?

    • @paintballplayer700
      @paintballplayer700 Před 5 lety +71

@@dougm659 Quartz watches don't move the second hand at the frequency of the crystal the way that mechanical watches move the hand at the frequency of the escapement. The circuitry of a quartz watch keeps track of the crystal vibrations, but they use an electronic stepper motor to move the hand at some arbitrarily-decided frequency. In most quartz watches they use the motor to move the hand once per second, to save battery life. Bulova chooses to move it multiple times per second to mimic a sweeping second hand. But it is still not truly smooth, the way a Spring Drive is. Spring drive is the smoothest possible system because the gear train doesn't "tick", it is in 100% constant motion.

I have one sad and one uplifting story about Seiko watches. Their history and attention to detail, even on the lower-end watches has always made me like their philosophy.
I got a Seiko when I was 15, a quartz chronograph. It was one of the mid-tier models, nothing too fancy, but still nice. However, it did indeed die. Perhaps from heavy use or some unfortunate shock at some point many years later.
However, in my late 20s, early 30s I got a pair of identical Seikos from 1972 in a seemingly quite rare package. One of them runs flawlessly and one may be in need of a service, but they are some of my most beloved watches. I even managed to find unused crystals (they are acrylic, so they are easily nicked) so I could make them look as new. They may not have been more than mid-tier either when they were released, but they are rare today and I usually wear it once a week or so.
I later got a rugged Seiko 5 that I can use when I do something more taxing, sport or some work that may harm the crystal on one with an acrylic face (like the 1970s ones). I may try to find a sapphire crystal for that one one of these days.

I have the exact same Presage model in the video with the bracelet.
Very nice to see these macro shots on here. I admired it under a loupe and was very impressed by the finishing, especially for the price. I found no imperfections under magnification. The polishing is on another level. It looks so great on the wrist, refects the light beautifully, I never get tired of looking at it and winding it.
Recommend the Presage Cocktail Time Range 100 %.

As much as I hate to admit, brand name matters.
Would you pay 20k for a Toyota? Yes. How about 80k for a Grand Toyota? No, that's silly. How about 80k for a Lexus. Sure.
It's really hard to be known for affordability and also for luxury. I can be done, but it's going to take a long long time for the message to get across. The names don't work, it's too similar for the average consumer to differentiate.

Thats the difference between western culture and the japanese, the only reason lexus exists is to appeal to the shallow westerners. Look at nissan for instance from the humble micra to the mighty skyline GTR's, Honda with a civic to an NSX, I feel this is a flaw in western culture to not look beyond the tip of our noses and be so petty.

Great video! My first watch was a Timex field watch when I was 7yrs old. In 1975 for my 11th birthday my dad was working in the Middle East and bought me a Seiko Pogue 6139 the one with the Orange dial. All my friends at school were so jealous. It was far too big for my skinny child wrists but I loved everything about that watch. Nowadays I have a few Seiko's - SARB 033, SARB 017 Alpinist and SARX 045 amongst other entry level Swiss watches of a similar calibre and I appreciate what is good about all of them. I am yet to dip into the high end of horology and my tastes change as I learn about different watch makers and their history and philosophy, however, I can't help but feel some sort of allegiance to Seiko and I would love to own a Grande Seiko in the future. This video among others has strengthened my feelings and choice regarding this. The story about the guy putting 30 years of his life's work into developing the Spring Drive - the persistance and determination in acheiving this goal. I want to celebrate that by proudly owning and wearing such a watch.

I paid only $800.00 each for my two Seiko's. My Seiko SBDC051 dive watch, and my Seiko Presage Blue Tuxedo are exquisitely crafted watches, and keep reliable time. The diver runs fast at just 1 minute a week, and the Presage slow at just 2 minutes a week. My diver sees aqualung and snorkeling time, and has been robust, to say the very least. After every outing I merely rinse it under cold clear water, dry it with a towel, and wear it to a fine dining establishment the same evening. Unlike the majority of 'luxury' Swiss diver owners whose watches never experience submersion in Salt Water, my Seiko is used for its intended purposes! The workmanship of the movement revealed through the back of my Presage is impressive. Whether it is building wonderful time pieces for any budget, or building automobiles, Seiko and the Japanese know how to provide tremendous value at any price point. This quotation from The Last Samurai characterizes Japanese ingenuity and craft well: "They are an intriguing people, from the moment they wake they devote themselves to the perfection of whatever they pursue; I have never seen such discipline . . ." It has been my suspicion for some time that, much of the prejudice against Seiko vs. Swiss watch products (Japanese vs. European autos) is snobbery and racism.

I think you miss Seiko's real goal.
From the beginning their goal has always been to deliver the most accurate and most elegant time keeping products for the right price.
They wanted to compare with the Swiss at first because the Swiss had their reputation. But when they saw that they consistently kicked Swiss asses in chronograph competitions for a full decade in the 60s-70s and that the ultimate response from Swiss competitors and organizers was to simply stop organizing chronograph competitions and make absolutely no effort to improve their shitty movements, Seiko knew they had nothing to expect from those lame losers.
So they just kept improving on their own while sticking to their original philosophy: number 1 requirement for a watch is accurate time keeping, number 2 and 3 are quality and elegance, and all three should be affordable to the masses. Premium only comes with luxury pieces. But the most basic watch should always be almost as accurate as the highest luxury watch.
We westerners have been victim for decades to the "Swiss Is Quality, Japanese/Chinese Is Shit" marketing. We have lowered our standards. We buy inaccurate pieces that should never have passed quality check for the price of a normal watch, and pay huge premiums to get a chance at pieces that barely meet reasonable expectations.
The result is in the western world watches have become fashion accessories with an approximative time display feature.
When you finally decide to go over that marketing and seek for real objective facts, you find a manufacturer that tells you: "The first purpose of a watch is time accuracy. You, the customer, should at least expect that. We, the manufacturer, would disgrace ourselves if we sold you an inaccurate piece. So now, here's our full range of products to suit various tastes in colors, design, features, price. You might have to make trade-offs over those aspects. But rest assured whatever piece you buy from us you will have the best accuracy possible even at the lowest price. You will never have to pay a premium for improved accuracy."
Seiko delivers real value products for an honest price.
