    The Seiko 5 SNXS79 is an awesome every day watch highly reminiscent of the Rolex Datejust. I wouldn't call it an homage, but it it certainly takes some inspiration from it's luxury cousin. At under $100 it features a compact 37mm case that actually wears great on even my larger 7.5" wrist, and has some of the best lume you'll find on a dressy watch.
    NOTE: It seems that Amazon and Aliexpress are both running out of stock on these items (this video really blew up unexpectedly). You might need to look for other stores for the watch, or wait for Amazon to restock. There's another bracelets that is basically the exact same as the one shown, but under a different brand, I'll link that as well. Also be aware that Aliexpress takes upwards of a month to ship and their customer service is not great. That's the tradeoff with buying direct from China.

    I have the version with a blue dial, the SNXS77. I can't get tired of wearing it and when I do so I can't stop throwing a quick look at it every 5 minutes or so. Amazing piece. Also, it is the watch my dad used to wear when I was about 7-9, so it has a strong sentimental bond to me since it reminds me of him every time I look at it.

      Seiko watches sell watches to us where the profit margins are normal. The so called luxury watches scam us into spending 1000s of $$$ by their product placements in movies etc plus their clever marketing strategies. The thing is that these so called luxury watches are grossly overpriced. So when we get a watch for $100 - $500 we think that it is priced very less.
      I have a Chinese knock off which i got for $150 whose steel quality and finishing is as good as my $500 Seiko (i love my seikos too BTW).

    • @Phlegm_Thrower
      @Phlegm_Thrower Před 2 lety +4

      Looking at Seiko's price now, I think your comment has aged poorly. And to be honest, unless you're wealthy, in house movement is just an extra cost of maintenance that you don't need. No one really cares about the accuracy of a mechanical watch. That's what a smartphone is for. Or a G-Shock that syncs with your smartphone.

    • @superfast30
      @superfast30 Před 2 lety +12

      @@Phlegm_Thrower Actually, it hasn't. Seiko 5's can be had for under $200 and my point was and still is that you dont need to spend stupid amounts of money to get a watch with an inhouse movement!

    Just buy it because it's a Seiko. That speaks for itself. Why does it have to look like a Rolex? Rolex are for people who have a lot of money and desire but don't really know a lot about watches. Seiko have been around longer than Rolex and years more expertise.

      To be fair this is misleading. Yes Seiko as a company was founded in 1881 while Rolex as a brand wasn't founded until 1920. However, Seiko was just a man repairing watches and clocks when it was first founded. The first watches produced under the brand Seiko didn't hit the market until 1924, 4 years after the first Rolex branded watches hit the streets.

    Seiko 5 -- what they lack in panache they make up for in charm. For folks who don't hate their money. I have the S(whatever, whatever) something, 75. White dial. It's my least expensive watch, and I reach for it the most. One thing I WILL state. Drives me nuts when folks say the bracelets are cheap. They aren't. Mine has these incredible "Aztec"-like links with amazingly detailed brushed and polished surfaces. It is perfect with this watch -- all part of a unified design that is impossible to get with an after-market strap. They rattle because they are designed with some play to flex with your wrist so it's comfortable and the metal doesn't bend/stretch over time. They are hollow to save on weight so it's a light, comfortable wear. The clasp is "good enough". Never had one fail, never heard of one failiing. I always laugh at "hollow end links" complaints. Rolex used hollow end links on the DateJust until the early-2000s. The goal is to max comfort, max durability, and yes, min cost. But again, I go back to the level of detail and finishing on my sample. Wouldn't dream of swapping it out. I'd buy another watch and put a leather strap on it to dress it up a bit before I'd ever ditch this excellent bracelet. They're affordable enough to go this route.

    I have a Seiko 5 similar to this, that I have had for 25 years. I have kept it on the band it came with and have had no problems with either the band or the watch. I wore it every day for that period of time, with no services required. It still keeps good time gaining about 12 seconds a day. Has been that way since I received it. Even now that I have gotten into collecting watches, I go back to it myself re often than any other watch in my collection, and love it like an old friend. Seiko makes great dials. This one has a unique blue dial with a sunburst effect and a very unique atlas look when you catch the light just right. Kinda reminds me of the old wiggle pictures you got in a box of kracker-jacks as a kid.

    My first automatic 25 years ago was very similar, I purchased this watch a couple of years ago. The bracelet for me has a retro charm to it, totally in love with it.. wore it everyday. The pinch of the skin and pulling of the hairs took me back to my childhood. I replaced it with a OP 36mm steel dial which almost a homage to it minus the day date function of course. This Seiko also shaped my watch requirements over the years, mainly being a watch has to have lume. I went from a very similar watch to every shape and size of watch, returned back to this watch. I used it to make sure the style of watch would be something I would still like in another 25 years, before the purchase of a more expensive OP

    Great review, I got a SNXS79 a year when my last Seiko 5 SNX427 broke after dropping it on a tiled floor, I cannot complain too much on the Seikos robustness as it survived an operational tour in Iraq. It was cheaper to buy a new watch than get it repaired which is why I bought the SNXS79, I liked the simple unfussy lines with a slight military appearance, I was blown away when you put it next to the Rolex it looks just like it! It's been very accurate and a delight to wear, the bracelet recommendation is a great tip, thanks for sharing.. :-)

I had just gotten my SNXS79K and was so frustrated with the bracelet. This replacement is amazing! It has a beautiful, understated elegance; inexpensive, but never cheap. The lume is awesome. All round a beautiful watch with the bracelet upgrade. I followed the link for that. It even came with the tools to fix it and they weren't monkey metal either and did a good job.

    The bracelet swap was a great idea, takes the watch to the next level. Ordered one myself. It looks AMAZING on a grey leather or suede strap with vintage style stitching by the lugs, but not so great for the summer.
    Dinged up my hardlex a bit on this piece as well, no biggie, either way, a bit of Polywatch should buff it right out. Though it's such a nice looking watch, I could see myself swapping the hardlex out for sapphire eventually.

      I want to try it on a vintage strap with the stitching near the lugs. So far though I like it way better on a bracelet than any of the leather straps I've tried it on. It looks good on leather (great even), but it also draws more attention to the small size of the watch on my larger wrist.

    When I was younger starting out I could only afford to buy watches such as Armitrons from flee markets until I began my career and when I was twenty eight years old I purchased my first watch that I considered to be a gift to myself. It is an all rose gold elongated Seiko tank watch that reminded me of a 1930s Gruen Curvex when I saw it and after that I went on to establish a well rounded small watch wardrobe of watches to wear with appropriate clothing for appropriate occasions. I’ve still got all of those Seikos along with a Bulova three hand square curved polished stainless tank that looks like a Cartier MC however I’ve gone through a few SNX and SNE models due to the reason that I wear them. These are great everyday watches and they’re beautiful looking watches so one can feel comfortable wearing anywhere however I have finer watches of this type from other makers and I wear this and the SNE series when I perform physical work so I have every expectation when I buy them that I’ll cycle them out every decade or so due to physical appearance but it’s a watch and a wardrobe and there’s a time and place for everything. Seikos are great. Everyone should have a few.

It is an excellent dress watch as the dial color will match any suit you would wear. The aesthetics seem like it's more expensive than it is. My only gripe is that even if we removed all the removable links in the bracelet, it can no longer be adjusted to the size of my wrist as I have a thin one. But it still kinda fits me fine. Nice review and great suggestion on dealing with the lousy folded band. I always looked at the Seiko 5 as an introductory watch that many try out as their first automatic movement. It's a great marketing strategy by Seiko to keep something available in the affordable range.

    Great video, and nice catch and upgrade with that change of bracelet. I have three Seikos by now: One vintage 5 Actus from -71 with 6106 movement (with hacking and "kanji" day option which you got back then), and two modern ones with the 7S26 ditto (SKX007 and SNK809). I've been thinking about getting a SNXS79 or a SNKL23. Both seems like great classic Seikos for the money, and I'd like a dressier Seiko than the ones I have. And that 37 mm size would be perfect for my tiny wrists.
    However, they both also have the 7S26 module, and maybe it would be interesting also having a Seiko with some other movement (except for my old one). However, these are definitely great builds for the money. And looks really good, IMHO.

    Thank you! This video is still going strong. You inspired me to order this watch from the US (to the Netherlands), and to get the exact bracelet from Aliexpress. You're absolutely right: it's an exceptionally good-looking dial. And the size is perfect. I'm smitten with it. Only downside, as you mention too, is the quite flimsy clasp. I couldn't get the tight and tiny friction pin out of the original Seiko clasp to use it in the new bracelet. Only the upper part with the Seiko logo on it is easily replacable, but it's not a great fit with the rest of the replacement clasp. Buying a better quality folding clasp seems like a good next step.

    Another great video! You think 37 mm is a small watch! To my generation 40 mm is huge! The famous A3 watch that won WW2 for America didn't go above 33 mm and it was worn by some pretty big wristed airmen. Interestingly enough it did hack which was unusual back then. It was hand wound not automatic. it was a little big for its day to make it easier to see in a darkened aircraft at night.After WW2 the average wristwatch grew from about 31 mm to 33 mm by the early 60s and by the early eighties 35 or 36 mm was common. If you'll consider watch of that size something like a 1960s Seamaster de Ville would look good on your wrist. That's much dressier in my book than a Seiko 5 or a Datejust. Now I must source an Oyster bracelet for my Seiko 5.

    I have a couple of Seiko5 before just for fun. I wear them most of the time except some formal occasions. As my experience, you pay what you get! As they make for a low price, so the materials made from them are in a very low end level, especially the main spring, They will stayed reasonable accurately for 3-4 years ,then you need to have a service before they run like crazy fast and slow, and the service cost will make you rethink for the value that worth. So, unless you can do the service by yourself, a cheap watches like Seiko 5 is worth for your consideration, or see them as some disposable product using in3-4 years. 😊

    Because of this video, I bought the watch - could not find a dark grey one, so got the dark blue one instead and it is gorgeous !! Very comfortable on my 8 inch wrist (i think because of the lug design). After getting the blue version (snxs77) I actually managed to find the grey version (snxs79) on Rakuten Japan and ordered it without hesitation ...... it is now on the way to me ! (also ordered the upgrade bracelet for both).
    Btw. both the watches I bought were the Malaysian produced "k" version - not the Japanese "J" version (which tends normally to be more sought after by watch nerds like me). In my experience (I have several other Seiko watches) there is no difference in quality. But on this particular model, the much longer text on the bottom of the dial on the japanese ones kind of distracts from the "balance" and simplicity of the dial. The much shorter text on the malaysian ones is much more discreet and in line (no pun intended) with the simplicity of the dial.
