I'm going to give my 2 cents here. I don't think Grand Seiko is chasing after Rolex any more. I think that part of their overall plan has been, gone, and succeeded - they've shown people that a Seiko can be luxurious, and compete in the same price bracket as The Crown (at retail, at least). Now they're aiming higher.
The improvements in technology, design, fit and finishing, together with the increased costs, suggest they're aiming for the next bracket of luxury - the JLC/Breguet bracket of £10-25k. After that, GS will have Vacheron/Audemars/Lange/Patek in their sights (probably in about 10 years) until, ultimately, the Micro Artists studio end up turning out extremely small batches of extremely high-end, handmade luxury watches to compete against Journe or Gronefeld.
Don't forget, Seiko's ultimate aim was always to beat the Swiss by being the best. For GS, it's a long game. Personally, it's one I think they're winning.

    • @neilmartin7776
      @neilmartin7776 Před rokem +1

@@c2pascual which is sort of my point. I believe Grand Seiko is going to move into that bracket and be seen as the Japanese Patek. Credor is the creation of the Micro Artists studio, and i believe that what we see from them now is only the start. Credor (Micro Artists) will eventually push on to be Seiko's answer to Journe - incredibly rare, incredibly refined, incredibly expensive and incredibly desirable collector's pieces. More so than they are now.

For me grand Seiko is still a great choice but they are walking dangerously towards a price territory where the relevance of quality and finishing starts to fade against brand recognition and status.and that is a dangerous game for them as i don't think they are there yet. If we go to the street and we ask people for 5 luxury watch brands, i would be surprised if Grand Seiko shows up in the list... at all...

Good comment but I disagree. They have been there for a while, and when I mean there, their craftmanship is (has been) well above the one of Rolex. The only difference is that folks weren't aware of GS because of 1. Rolex/Luxury Swiss brands marketing machine 2. Swiss watch snobs discounted the brand because it was owned by Seiko (mass producer watchmaker). Mass opinion based on marketing does not equate to quality. At least in my opinion. Great video! My comment come of course from my personal opinion and i could be wrong (i am wrong more than anyone I know) but i have the feeling that of the people that buy Rolex. A big percentage does it for investment and another big percent does it to "show off", just for reputation. And only a small percentage buys them because they genuinely like the watches.
The first two groups will not look at Grand Seiko. If GS prices keep creeping up they will price out the enthusiast that like the brand and the watches. I am just saying that they could land in a position where the people like me who like the brand cannot afford them, and the people who can afford them don't look at them because they don't have enough "oomph", reducing their market to a small group of people who can afford them and know enough to value them.
I hope what I'm saying makes sense.

@@jonathanblanco3100 The attraction to Rolex for conspicuous consumption is legitimate - they are known the world over for being expensive watches. Most of the people who aren't into watches, know of Rolex. They have become popular with people who's income and asset levels are not high wealth... in fact, the entire industry is marketing en masse to the aspirational people... those who want to belong to the world of luxury. If it becomes too mainstream, or available it loses that. This is why top brands like Rolex, Patek, AP, Vacheron, Hermes, LV, they do not just make their products available in huge quantities to every person who show up with the cash. This is all marketing... veblen goods, do some research on it. Rolex clients are not supposed to be Toyota Corolla owners who work retail and live at home with their parents, it's supposed to be high income people who own several watches from the brand, who live an upscale and expensive lifestyle. Someone with a $20,000 watch SHOULD be owning at $200,000 car and living in a $2 million dollar house. Just my observations.

You still can’t get a Rolex from an AD, my Grand Seiko AD ordered my SBGA429 and I had it without any mark-up in three weeks with no drama or previous purchase history from the AD. The craftsmanship is first class, the timekeeping is astounding (+1 second per two weeks). It’s subtle and it’s not screaming look at me I have a flashy watch, it subtly says I have class, without making some outward statement. For me it’s a match: subtle, excellent at doing it’s job without being too flashy.

Grand Seiko is in a league of its own and unrivaled. It is likely to stay that way. It has taken on stereotypical Japanese planning style; 20 years at a time. With that R&D commitment investment to quality wristwatches, you can see the results. The Spring Drive development to where it is today is a testimony to that! Instead of reacting to what other watch brands are doing then upgrade the existing movements to meet or slightly exceed the competition, GS have proactively set the bar higher in every way leaving the competition to decide what they want to do to rival. There was no necessity to bring out Spring Drive 5-day Evolution 9 series 9RA2 movement as the 3-Day 9R65 movement has already set a standard into the stratosphere that no one else has reached so, why go a bit further? Well GS can and have displayed what is possible. There is a significant price difference between the two as well as the specification that is probably as different as a Corvette C8 with the standard Stingray 1LT and the Z51 package to a 3LT model versions. Where does Rolex come in to play with GS Spring Drive? It does not and nowhere near! I hope GS take it further and produce a Spring Drive Annual and/or Perpetual Calendar version that will set the cat among The Pigeon to blow everyone else away again!

In the charming town of Watchville, where time seemed to move at its own pace, a group of watch enthusiasts gathered at the local cafe, sipping on espressos and discussing their beloved timepieces. Among them was Ethan, a jovial watch collector with a penchant for playful banter.
As the conversation veered towards Seiko's move to create a luxury range called "Grand Seiko," Ethan couldn't help but wear a mischievous grin. "Grand Seiko, huh? Is it just me, or does it sound like they're trying a bit too hard?" he chuckled.
His fellow enthusiasts raised their eyebrows, intrigued by Ethan's misgivings. "Come on now, Ethan. Grand Seiko watches are known for their craftsmanship and precision," said Tom, a devoted Grand Seiko fan.
"Oh, I don't doubt their quality," Ethan replied, "but let's be honest here. Slapping 'Grand' in front of 'Seiko' isn't exactly the pinnacle of creativity, is it? It's like calling a basic burger joint 'Grand Burger' and expecting it to become a five-star restaurant."
The table erupted in laughter, but Tom wasn't going to let this slide. "Well, it does convey the idea of elevated elegance and luxury," he retorted.
Ethan leaned back, raising an eyebrow. "Elevated, you say? I'd rather put my money into timepieces with names that sound like they belong in a fairy tale! Patek Philippe, Rolex, Audemars Piguet, H. Moser & Cie, A. Lange & Söhne, Vacheron Constantin... now those are names that scream luxury and class!"
The group nodded, acknowledging the allure of the names Ethan mentioned. "Exactly! There's something captivating about those names that evoke dreams of timeless elegance and sophistication," said Grace, a collector of vintage watches.
Ethan continued with a grin, "But 'Grand Seiko'? It's like they ran out of ideas and just went, 'Let's throw in a fancy adjective and call it a day.' I mean, couldn't they have come up with something more enchanting?"
As the discussion playfully unfolded, they all agreed that while Grand Seiko watches were exceptional timepieces, the name left something to be desired in terms of evoking a sense of luxury and allure.
"So, when you see a Patek Philippe or a Vacheron Constantin, it's like stepping into a world of sophistication and heritage," Ethan said. "But 'Grand Seiko'? It's more like a well-dressed cousin who's trying a bit too hard to fit in at the fancy gala."
The conversation continued, filled with light-hearted teasing and shared laughter. In the end, they all cherished their love for watches, recognizing that while the name might raise an eyebrow, what truly mattered was the passion and appreciation they had for the artistry and craftsmanship that adorned their wrists. As they bid farewell to the cafe, their timepieces faithfully ticking, they knew that regardless of the name, the magic of horology would forever enchant their hearts.

Spring Drive is my favorite type of movement due to the accuracy and the sweep of the second hand. And while I do like a lot of Grand Seiko designs but they are still missing on the fly microadjustment clasps except on their 43mm+ dive watches. The new Tentagraph is a $12,000 watch and it doesn't have tooless micro adjust. There are microbrands like Zelos, and AliExpress brands like San Martin that have this feature on their bracelets for less than $1000. Sometimes less than $300. Even more embarrassing is that the Regular Seiko SNR033 has an on the fly adjustable clasp, a 5R66 Spring Drive movement and is made from titanium all for $4000. If Tudor and Omega can do it, why can't Grand Seiko? Dumb rant over.

In essence it's core design cues are based on the Submariner case and every year it makes minor tweaks. I suppose when you are always looking down the watch competitor mountain, there is no need to change your design nor market strategy.

Sure the dials are fabulous but that alone isn't enough. Rolex seem to just work along with many other evolved, cultured old money Swiss brands. The icons are the icons for good reason. The designs by and large are masterpieces. I also think they are too boxed in with their collections and lean towards a dressy watch feel. Hopefully that too will change. I own both. TT sub, and a Shunbun. The Shunbun takes all my wrist time. But the TT was a daily wear for 20 years, it's shown it's toughness. I do believe, that Rolex is trying to go upmarket, and become more like Patek, but without the horology. They are doing it in scarcity, and gatekeeping instead. Kind of like, how you can't buy a ferrari unless they approve and that is a mistake. Time will tell.

The new evolution 9 is definitely expensive but you have to consider that usually you don't pay the retail price for a new Grand Seiko, you can count a 10-15% discount. If you wanna buy a Rolex today you are lucky if you pay retail price. So for me GS is still a good buy

It took a lot of time to find the perfect GS for me. GS watches are beautiful, but they don't have for me the effect that Rolex and Omega watches do. I bought a SBGJ239. I absolutely love it. Everyone should have a GS in their collections for sure. Do I see myself buying another GS? Maybe...another Rolex or Omega? 100% sure.

I have a grand Seiko ,9,f quartz which I'm happy with. My next watched I would like to add is a Rolex oyster and a zenith

@@mitch20003 Both are amazing choices. Years ago I was a big fan of chronographs. I think the Zenith chronomaster is even more beautiful than a Daytona or a Speedmaster. What do you think about rhe GS quartz?

@@hugohernandez3651 I would love to have A zenith chronomaster or a Daytona. Daytona is definitely out of my price range, lol.
Its a beautiful watch. I have the yellow/silver color. I dont believe there is a Difference in quality of polishing between the 2k grand seiko or the 7k one. Have you seen the grand seiko white birch? looks amazing. Probably my favorite one ive seen.
