A peaceful boatman once known as the Black Samurai is pulled back into conflict when he takes a little girl with mysterious powers under his wing.

He had more than that. Before this anime, he had a children's book series, a manga series, a couple of Taiga drama (historical drama) series, some novels, and movies before the world even learned of his existence in Japanese history.
They were also planning a live action movie starring Chadwick Boseman but he died.

Yasuke was basically Nobunaga's Scary Black Man, and was the only Daimyo to have his own Scary Black Man. Nobunaga was big on having things nobody else in Japan had.
He was more than just hired muscle. When they weren’t busy trying to unify Japan, Yasuke taught Nobunaga a lot about the outside world, sometimes at dinner time

Yasuke is said to have been 6 feet tall, and since the average height during the Warring States period in Japan was only 5 feet 2 inches, he seemed quite a giant to the Japanese of the time.
I like the anime but probably would’ve been cooler without the magical and mechanical bs.It’s good but historically would’ve been better

What's next? If they did stick to what transpired in real life, people will then complain "eugh, it's not realistic, it shouldn't look like he's cutting through butter with a hot knife when he's slicing people in half, they should be a bit more realistic in the story telling."

I was not bothered by the magic and wicks, but I would like another realistic version like the one Hollywood prepared with the black phanter actor

I don't really watch anime outside of Dragon Ball Z, but I love this show so much that I'm trying to get more into different anime now. And Flying Lotus leading the musical composition throughout is just icing on the cake!
Bro dragon ball z? Really!?! That’s like the gateway anime, literally majority of modern western societies first anime they truly tuned in for. At some point you got to let go and expand your horizon. Try one punch man, solo leveling and one piece. One piece is hard to get into at first but after a few arcs trust me you won’t be able to get enough.

lol in reality Yasuke wasnt known for his swordsmanship. However, the Japanese did clash and get their asses handed to them by Portugese swordsmen. The reach of their rapier's and how thin their blades were made it easy for them to get in between Samurai armor. Infact, the Samurai were so impressed by the rapier and dagger style of the Europeans that they adapted it for themselves as two sword style.
Japan is basically "improvise, adapt and overcome"
Please remake this to be historical, this anime has mechs for some reason

I wanted to love this series so much. The first episode was so promising but the plot kind of fell off for me. I would have loved a little bit more of a grounded story and more characters that were as interesting as Yasuke himself. He was cool af.

@@suprr3427 It's a similar enough concept and in his oppinion Afro did it better (so do i tbh), its tottaly fine to enjoy both but there's no harm in drawing a comparrison so long as it's productive and not too mean spirited. Yasuke looks pretty good but my personal turn off was all the demonic and cyberpunk stuff, it just doesn't blend too well for me, at least not here.

Why not compare it to something else. Seems like whenever a show comes out that focuses around a black character it gets compared to other black characters. This Anime looks similar to The Afro Samurai.
Yasuke actually existed in Japanese history. He was the first foreign samurai who served the Oda Clan during the Sengoku Wars period as Oda's retainer. He was a well-known historical figure in Japan that there were several movies, TV series, manga, novels, and anime (Afro Samurai, for example) that were based or inspired by his life story.
The thing is that after the fall of the Oda Clan, Yasuke was dismissed/stripped off his samurai title by Akechi Mitsuhide (an Oda retainer who betrayed the clan) because he didn't deserve to "die honorably" (seppuku). After that, there weren't any more records of what happened to him (which is probably why the anime got "creative" by adding fantasy/sci-fi elements in them).
I’m not really sure what to make of this. I mean a Black Samurai ? Oh but there was Afro Samurai so in a way it’s not all that new but I still not really sure about it.😓
Yasuke was the first foreign samurai though. He actually served Oda Nobunaga as a retainer after being brought to Japan by the Portuguese missionaries (he was a slave). He disappeared after the Oda Clan was defeated (they were wiped out by a group of assassins lead by one of the Oda Clan retainers, Akechi Mitsuhide) and Oda Nobunaga committed seppuku. Yasuke was a known historical figure in Japanese history, there were a lot of movies, dramas, children's books, novels, manga, and anime that was based of or inspired by Yasuke's life story.
If you're in doubt about, look it up on Google. There's plenty of info about him and his life story was also documented by Jesuit missionaries and fellow Oda Clan warriors (namely the Shincho Koki accounts).
