      Nathan Gatten the media basically fucked the influence of the US folk in the Vietnam War after the Tet Offensive, even though the american marines and the south vietnamese soldiers repelled it, of course, they had heavy casualties in infraestructure and lives...
      I sometimes wonder if that media could have been able to report during the WW2 in any front, the outcome would have changed in any way, like making gory descriptions of the battles or reporting rumors back home when information was harder to verify...

    • @TheSilverSky91
      @TheSilverSky91 Před 6 lety +89

      It depends, the Axis (especially Japan) were known for hiding losses (Miday for one) from nearly everyone (government, other military units, civilians) that might have led to an early loss of support and on both sides it might have lead to the early sacking of incompetent commanders (Patton, though not incompetent, might not have had his career survive what he did in Italy), which may have led to more competent commanders rise through the ranks faster. The media would have definitely impacted the success of the D-Day landings if not for the UK's efforts at secrecy.

      We came even closer when a Russian satellite detected US missiles on their way to Moscow. Literally every green light went off to return fire, but the Russian who was suppose to actually push the button thought it was odd that the USA would launch missiles without any kind of provocation, fully knowing that Russia could easily return fire. And he successfully predicted that the USA hadn't launched missiles. Turned out there was just an electronics malfunction, which was promptly fixed.

    Fun historical fact: At the same time JFK went live, announcing the missile crisis, a satirical comedy album about kennedy and his family was being recorded in front of a live studio audience. "The First Family." The audience roared and laughed at the numerous digs at the president, unaware of the developing situation occurring right outside their studio. It's a very interesting snapshot of public sentiment of JFK and cold war relations on the day that announcement went out.

    Do you know that Guevara's name was Ernesto?
    Che is a unique expression of the Argentines. It is used to get someone's attention There is no translation but the closest thing would be hey.
    This word is unique to the Argentines, so the Cubans who did not understand the meaning began to call Guevara Che.

      Lol no, che is used in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Southern Brazil, Bolivia, Galicia and even the Falklands to varying degrees. Its origin is uncertain, as there are expressions in Guaraní, Venecian Italian and Valencian Spanish from which it could have originated. Your comment also implies Cubans were ignorant of its meaning, when in fact you are. Che loosely means friend, dude, mate, pal and is used similarly to the Venezuelan "Pana", the Colombian "Parce" or the Mexican "Güey", "cuate" or "Carnal", the Costarrican, Honduran and Salvadorian "Mae" or "Maje", the Lunfardian "Pibe", the Paraguayan "Kape" and the Cuban "Asere", and that's just scratching the surface.
      In short, there are variations and equivalents of Che in pretty much all of the Spanish dialects, so it's pretty outstanding to think the Cubans wouldn't have understood its meaning. The term is commonly used to refer to Argentinians around Latin America.

The military's DEFCON status counts from 5 (normal force readiness) to 1 (maximum force readiness). I was in NORAD for 4 out of the 6 years I was in the Air Force, and I see the mistake all the time. I think even a song said "Defcon 5!" once indicating that things have gone terribly wrong. It's actually the other way around. We want to stay at 5 as long as possible, 1 means we're all dying...
