You can't gauge the Taiwanese people's will for self-determination and their resolve to defend themselves by simply talking to them. You can however, have a sense of their self-sacrifice for the greater good when the country went into a citizen initiated quarantine during the Pandemic. This explains why they were the first country to bear the brunt of Communism after WWII and are the only one to survive this long.

I hope you are right. I sensed a desire for self rule but a practicality in their willingness and ability to defend. On a deeper level I suspect there is a lot of manipulation and misinformation being injected into the social fabric from the CCP that is making some more accepting of a takeover.

That’s because you seem to only stay in Taipei or the northern area. If you go further south, you will find more different thought.
