    Manual vs Auto argument is so sold. Just like how they used to argue with me with vinyl djing vs digital djing. All my past cars were manual and I have no problems embracing technology.

    Hey Chris, I appreciate these videos. I just started watching yesterday. I recently moved to MA with an 18 year old M3. I love my M3 to death but it's really not suited for the greater Boston area. There's a Colonial VW off Mystic Ave. that I plan to go in and look for a deal on a Sport trim GTI. This video was really helpful for deciding whether to wait for the minor refresh or not. So thank you very much. My 2 cents on the manual vs etc. dilemma, as more and more auto mfgs axe the manual due to low sales, it feels like an endangered driving method (in a decade it will be petrol heads feeling IC will be endangered due to increasing sales of EV versions of cars, and in 2 autonomous vs non autonomous ). Standard vs 'auto' its a dumb argument, its like fighting over ice cream flavor. However, we car enthusiasts, like you, appreciate great cars made for people who just like to drive. The death of manuals seems inevitable as demand decreases, I HOPE, that it doesn't lead to the death of fun cars vs people movers. Keep up the good videos. *subscribed*

    Coming from my experience working in service I would recommend trading the car in and replacing it and taking the depression hit over everything else because once you take apart that dash and put it together annoying squeaks and rattles are going to be more prevalent earlier than it should and I don't know how much it's going to cost you. Also, you have to take into account that the work is going to be done by a human and not a robot so they could care about quality work or not give a crap and give you shotty work because they are working for flat rate or simply having a bad day or they are just not motivated to tackle a huge job like that. Also wouldn't your insurance rates go up after a claim for a few years.... I don't think it's worth the energy and aggervation but it is after all your car and your money just putting my opinion out there.

  • @nikefans
    @nikefans Před 7 lety

    I will have to blame this on you!!!! After watching your videos day after day ... I couldn't stop myself and traded in my 8 months new car and bought the exact same white GTI sports DSG like yours .. every comment you had was accurate .. I love those red ambient light on the door that made a huge different. Thanks for the video .. gave me the motivation and go back to the VW family. (I used owned a Charcoal GTI MK5) I'm extremely happy about my whitey specially I got a very fat discount on it. It feels super good!
    It's all about the deal .. you won't get any great deal on the new upcoming 2018 GTI for a while and heard that the starting price will be higher too .. No doubt getting the 2017 GTI with a deal is the bomb.

      2016 Civic sedan EX-L 1.5 turbo. Don't get me wrong it's a nice everyday car with 175hp but the thing is I used to own a MK5, love the power and the style and the rear seat fold flat for more space. the Civic Sedan is very spacy but the rear seat doesn't fold down which is very limited what i can carry with the car. Moreover the lack of power when i need it ... I got a fat discount close to $6k below retail and i forced the dealer take my trade in with the "private seller value" off KBB ... deal was pretty sweet... and also .. from watching your videos pushed me to make the call ... it's also a white one!

    DSG vs manual, this is how I see it. If it's a NA/Supercharged engine I'll buy a manual and if it's Turbo I'll get DGS, with turbo engines and DSG you are always in the boost vs manual you're not.

    • @Treizez34
      @Treizez34 Před 7 lety +1

      I'm always torn on DSG vs manual. I own a 2016 jetta GLI (test drove the GTI also, but decided the GLI fit the bill better for me) and it has the DSG transmission. I do miss that feeling of hitting the clutch and getting that perfect shift when you nail it just right. I came from driving manual for the last 13 years, but on the other hand, the DSG is still super responsive and fun to play with.
      The thing about the DSG is you have to know how to game it to get it to do exactly what you want. It's not the greatest at low speeds. It works on only a finite set of programming parameters and still requires a little throttle input to get it just right (depending on what you want it to do at that moment).
      Still...lots of fun either way. I rarely drive in automatic mode. Sometimes i pretend it's a manual and let off the gas when i shift (probably not the best for the transmission, but there was something about clutching/letting off the accelerator that always put me in such a chill mood when driving).

      German Driver Yes but you can't get one without the LED headlight for example. Also the new US spec GTI will come whit LED tail lights but not the nicer ones with dynamic turn signals. They did however present the euro spec Golf R at the NYIAS but our version will I'm sure come with different LED tail lights as seen on the regular Golf 7.5. I noticed VW has done that in the past on the R.

    We should meet up, I'm in Lexington MA. As for manual v. dgi...buying a GTI is a far more personalized/community experience than something pedestrian. People r passionate about GTI's & want to justify their personal choice as being "correct". I chose 6spd b/c car was a 3rd car/fun car. I'd never commute in a manual!!! Never say "never". 2 months in my new company bought "ultimate" car was gone, & I drive manual on my commute....oddly, even in traffic, I find it less boring...check back in a year :-). As for the virtual cockpit, we took my "ultimate" & a '12 Odyssey & my wife now has a Q7. I've logged maybe 5 miles in i over 4 months, & I was adamant about the virtual cockpit. Yes, it is "neat", but nothing that would "drive" a purchasing decision for me in the future...in fact Q7 has CarPlay & wife prefers it. The only feature, & again this is personal, that I miss from the "ultimate"? The heads-up display w/ navigation, speed, etc. That was both cool, utilitarian, & totally worth $$$. I just got 19" Santiago style rims & Michelin Pilot 4S rubber, remarkable tires.

    I own the MK7 Golf GTI since october 2016 and, am I the only one that think this model is nicer than the facelift? I know this things are very subjective but I prefer analog speedo for example, I prefer the front lights in the MK7 than in the facelift... I'm very, very happy having bought the car before the facelift. And don't forget, the new GTI comes with 7 speed gearbox wich, beeing new... I prefer a very used and tested 6 speed "old" one.

    I think they pissed off because the car manufacturers not going to offer a manual due to lack of sales. Wouldn't be surprised if VW gets rid of the manual transmission in next 10 years. I know Passat doesn't come with manual anymore also top trim Jetta doesn't come with one

    Sorry to hear about the insurance nonsense. Seems like a good reason to mandate gps tracking on contractor vehicles used in municipal contracts. I've been looking at the GTI as an option to replace the current manual transmission vehicle. I test drove a 2016 Autobahn ed. with the DSG -- a nice vehicle w/o doubt. I'd need a lot more seat time in that thing to make any kind of informed judgement on that transmission. And I still need to test drive the manual. One thing that I noticed with the upgraded brakes is that they seemed to grab very early with little room for modulation via pedal. What's your experienced with the upgraded brakes in the sport package? And how do you find them on your short commute to the office?

  • @knightmarel
    @knightmarel Před 7 lety

    I prefer the new headlights and taillights. the US spec taillights are straight up ugly. The xenon headlights fog up inside the glass and make it look very blurry on the outside. The new front and rear do look better than the pre facelift ones.

    Digital cockpit is also un-dimmable (is that a word?) and looks OK,responsive on dials too. But at night I really have to have everything as low light as possible. Serious question though as I'm moving from my 3dr GTD Mk6 manual to a dsg. Question I want to ask: how do the boxes is mk6 and mk7 compare? I'm erring towards a fully loaded mk6 but if the dsg is better in the mk7, that could say me. Thanks!

      Well, I ended up going for a 2015 Audi S3 Quattro and loving it! May be back to VW next time, but they really need to update the interior for the Mk8. The control system (jog dial mainly) in the Audi is so much better. getting the hang of the S Tronic in manual also, although i would like it to be a bit snappier in changes. Maybe next generation :)

    Hey Chris we Americans got ripped off completely! For the 2018 facelift we only get the led headlights, the cheaper version of the led taillights, some tweaks to the bumpers, some new but ugly directional wheels, a new head unit, and that's it. We don't get the new 7 speed dsg, sequential led taillights, the digital cockpit or the power increases. Golf R gets most of those except more power but U.S spec GTIs aren't getting anything cool. VWoA will keep being cheap bastards like always. (After all these years still no dual injection engine ...). Source of this information is the official vw news media archive so it's 100% accurate.

    my input about the dual clutch vs manual. i think a lot of guys get upset over people getting the dual clutch because of the number of car manufacturers that are no longer making manual cars. it's been said that the manual trans will one day, be no more, because the sales numbers of the manuals have taking a big dive.
    and that's my 2 cents

    I don't understand why people are against the dsg so much, it's just a personal preference. I've been driving wrx/sti's since 03 and just needed a break from manual, i do lot of city driving, and the stick was just getting annoying, maybe cause I'm getting older now. I don't regret my dsg one bit. I still have my 04 sti to rip around in if I get the urge for rowing through gears.

    My opinion on manual vs. DSG...(1). I don't give a shit what someone else is driving. They probably have their reasons. Even if that reason is they don't know how to drive a stick...I don't care. It's not my car. (2). I drive a manual because I very rarely get stuck in traffic. If I did I'd drive the DSG. Also the manual is cheaper to maintain, but if I was driving in stop and go traffic to work, etc, I'd pay the extra for the DSG. It's a great transmission. I never thought I'd ever drive an automatic, but I had one on my old JSW TDI and it was very good for an automatic (and from what I understand it's actually much better mated to a gas engine).

  • @tawaunwilliams7002
    @tawaunwilliams7002 Před 7 lety

    I agree I'm a manual guy myself, but it's certainly not like the DSG is a auto...and it does come down to driving hell even in L.A. traffic I'm ok creeping in gears, but I certainly understand someone who doesn't want to....and it's much easier to drive the GTI faster with the DSG, with a Manual it takes much more practice and dedication and most people of today and age don't have time for that....

  • @danI43541
    @danI43541 Před 7 lety +3

    Well this manual vs DSG discussion is really unnecessary :D I live in Germany and manuals are very common, but nothing bad about a DSG, especially in a golf! I'd personally buy it with a manual transmission but hey your car, your driving style etc! It's all just personal preference :D not sure if every GTI is even available with a manual in the US!
    Talking the MK7.5: the car looks gorgeous, I just recently saw a new GTI, with the LED lights and the virtual cockpit! Amazing vehicle, especially in white, and it did sound pretty well, for a stock car (had manufacturer "WOB" plates).
    And if the US isn't getting t the cockpit, I would not buy the 7.5! The rest of the car is similar and quite adaptive to the old MK7... I don't even like the biggest nav screen (called Discover Pro) because it only has capacitive buttons.. the 7spd DSG is nice too!
    Ps cool front number plate haha :D why didn't you remove the original US one? Are you going to do more mods to the car?

    DSG is far superior than a manual. I drove the manual. If you are a true "ENTHUSIAST" then you will get the DSG. The stock clutch slips after a state 1 tune. STAGE. ONE. You will always be faster with the DSG than a manual. There's so many more advantages to the DSG over the manual. The only people talking shit about the DSG are those that got the manual and have serious regrets.
