    Tough one... I like both games, but I'd have to go with Strider because it has so many unique and quirky design choices. Capcom took risks with it and it really stood out at the time it was released in arcades.
    Run Saber feels more like a generic side-scrolling platformer with Strider influences. While it's more polished, they definitely took the safe route with it.
    25+ years after it was released, a lot of people still remember Strider and it's still an influential game. The same can't be said of Run Saber.

      Run Saber's soundtrack is super forgettable. Strider's soundtrack is more cinematic, diverse and unique. It has electronic, ambient, classical and baroque music. Is actually the magnus opus of Junko Tamiya, a female composer who also did the soundtrack for the NES port of Bionic Commando.

    Another cool, random thing I figured out by accident on Run Saber was color swap: pause the game and press select and you'll swap through a decent number of different color schemes for the characters. This was especially cool for 2 player mode as a way to add personality to your play.

    Loved the Simpsons gag, and the ending skit was freakin' hilarious! I laughed my ass off!
    Being a huge Strider fan and growing up with the game, I kept thinking, "no way" after Strider lost category after category. I had never played Run Saber before, so I couldn't disagree, but I do admit, Strider does have its problems--the arcade version included. The controls are finicky as hell, it slows down a LOT, the voices are all kinds of weird and "off"--but man, does it have some killer tunes and graphics! I tried Run Saber on an emulator after watching your video and got through most of stage one before the game glitched out on me. It does seem pretty cool, so I'll definitely need to play through it some more, but from what I had played, I'd still say Strider has better graphics and music (I'm a sucker for late '80s Capcom arcade music). I dig the big sprites of Strider and I really like that it has a ton of songs throughout the game. I wish Run Saber wasn't so damned expensive, but I think I'm gonna need to pick up a copy.

    • @ConsoleWars

      Yeah. We didn't have any nostalgic connection to Strider so wasn't as satisfying as it is to most people. We know how important the game is, and we mentioned that several times, but in a showdown it ultimately lost. And too bad Run Saber is so expensive because its really fun.

    Bullshit, Strider is superior, Dan didn't even try to defend it. Characters are bigger and more defined in Strider, they don't have ugly, bold, black lines around every character and there's very fluid animation in the graphics. Also, jumping is very natural and only takes about a minute to get used to, there's no hampering of the controls going on. Normally I wouldn't care who won but the general lack of attention to detail just in this 1 episode is...ugh, Strider wins.

      Christopher Blair "Well they just compared a game from 1989 with a game from 1993 so why not?" They do that often though. Like with their Castlevania episode. Also, the Super FX Chip doesn't require a special hardware upgrade to run, its literally just an extra chip in the cartridge. Hundreds of Megs of storage and a large piggyback of new system resources are not being added. You might as well complain that Mode 7 shouldn't be allowed, as it's something the Genesis can't do via hardware.

    Loved the video as always guys, but I gotta ask, how is it that you've been doing this for almost 5 years and still haven't covered a single shmup? Shmups were a big genre in the 16-bit days and I'd love to get your take on one. Some good shmups to compare are:
    -Thunder Force III (Genesis) vs. Thunder Spirits (SNES)
    -Sagaia (aka Darius II, Genesis) vs. Darius Twin (SNES)
    -MUSHA (Genesis) vs. Space Megaforce (SNES) - both are part of the Aleste series
    -Raiden Trad (Genesis) vs. Raiden Trad (SNES)

    Strider was one of the games that got me addicted to the Genesis. Played it with my cousin relentlessly back in the mid-90s and he finally gave me it towards the end of the decade. About 10 years later, I discovered Run Saber and what a treat that was!!! Felt like a spiritual sequel, and had that early SNES charm (muted colors, bassy soundtrack, etc).
    Which one is best? I cannot tell you, but BOTH are easily worth owning/downloading. Now to find Cannon Dancer/Osman...

      Run Saber is a good game, but is still an obvious rip-off. Strider is more original and unique. That's the reason why there have been many sequels, spin-offs and remakes of Strider over the years, and not a single one of Run Saber....

    The animation in Strider does slow down for an instant, but it doesn't freeze. And is not game breaking.... is in between areas. This occurs because the sprite for the main character is much bigger than the one from Run Saber and has a wider animation area. Hiryu is far more acrobatic than the guys from Run Saber... by far!

  • @Chronobus
    @Chronobus Před 8 lety +1

    It's really surprising that a Mega Drive game slows down and even freezes for a second. It looks like Blast processing didn't save Strider. Kind of ironic since Run Saber plays faster and is on the Super Nintendo

    • @retrosoul8770
      @retrosoul8770 Před 7 lety +2

      Yeah alot of the time it comes down to poor console optimization. Strider came out really early in the Gen life and they clearly didn't know how to efficiently code for it or they were indifferent to it at the time. Because technically, this game should have no problem for the 68000 cpu. (Just look @ Musha from 1990!)
      The Snes, albeit a much slower processor suffered from the same issues in games early in its life...Gradius 3, Lttp, Super R-Type, all with slowdown that would occur, corrected once developers became more proficient with their programming like R-Type 3, Contra 3 and Super Metroid.

    You should play the original Japanese release of the reprogrammed SEGA release of Strider. You know that horrible piercing sound that it makes when he swings his saber? That actually has a vocal sample on top of it. ''All son's of old gods die'' at the intro is missing too. I'll say one thing though- I believe the SEGA Strider with his harder looking edges is better than the arcade version. E-swat has ''Them's the breaks'' taken out as well when you complete every other mission. Maybe SEGA of America were just stingy like that- but it made Strider sound bad without that sample.

    • @echelon2k8
      @echelon2k8 Před 7 lety +1

      Harder looking edges, maybe, but still greatly reduced animation frames. I also prefer the extra colors on the main sprite over the Genesis version.

    • @thenonexistinghero
      @thenonexistinghero Před 8 lety +1

      Strider was released in 1990 though... Run Saber in 1993. There was almost 3 years between the releases and the original Strider was released in 1989, about 1.5 years before the Genesis port. They're similar games, but... not really fair to compare. It's like letting a 10 year old boy beat up a 5 year old boy.

    • @ConsoleWars
      @ConsoleWars  Před 8 lety +2

      Just because a game came out later doesn't automatically make it better. Final Fight 2 came out after Streets of Rage 2. And I have a feeling one of our future videos is going to have an older game beat its copy.

    • @aztn19
      @aztn19 Před 8 lety

      thenonexistinghero very true. But comparing the NES port of Strider to the Sega version would be just as unfair honestly, which I thought they would at least mention. I'll always love the Sega port of Strider but I can give Run Saber props for improving on Strider's foundation. Now if only it were available on the Virtual Console, because Run Saber on eBay and Amazon asks for a sizable portion of my paycheck..

    • @echelon2k8
      @echelon2k8 Před 7 lety

      Run Saber and Strider are really two different games with only superficial similarities. Sure, Run Saber clones many of Strider's movements and elements of its angled level design, but it just doesn't have the same momentum and speed which makes it feel like a more generic side-scroller by comparison. You don't get the same rush at advanced levels of play.
