- Putin was re-inaugurated today to another six year term and it was a mild event without anything significant happening. Russia is currently conducting tactical nuclear exercises to try and threaten and intimidate the West from supporting Ukraine. A US Army soldier, Sgt. Gordon Black, traveled to Russia to visit a Russian woman and was immediately arrested and is now being held by the Russian government.

I have to concur, if a US soldier is dumb enough to knowingly wander off into North Korea or Russia then they aren't worth more than a token request to be returned when they (eventually) get in trouble.

Besides the appearance of being anointed by the Nation, there's the practical point of having a real taste of the sentiment in the population, as the number of people that refuse to vote and the number of opposing or protest votes give the government a pretty good idea of what's boiling under the surface

Brutal but I was in the Army. Any member of the US military who goes to Russia. other than embassy personnel with diplomatic immunity, who travels to ruzzia should not be leading US soldiers. A dishonorable discharge is in order. As you say Jake, he failed to inform superiors of his relationship. It's a given he would not have been given permission to go to orcland. My husband's co-worker a man all considered to be a real nice guy. In the early 2000 this Canadian man met a Russian woman online, he went to Russia to meet her I believe twice, married her and brought her and her teenage son to Canada. Within days of getting her citizenship thru this marriage, he came home one day to find everything was gone, plus she and her son. He was heartbroken and was in shock as he had no warnings she would do this. When he called the cell phone he had given her, her teenage son answered and said she didn't want to talk to him and to cease all contact and he would now be blocked.
I wonder if they asked him, was it all worth everything you have, and everything you were, just for that roll in the hay? An American soldier of all people. Thinking it's A-OK to go visit a nation we actively oppose in a hot war.

We do not know the full story, but this Sgt. Black did not have clearance to go to either China or Russia as he should had had, so he did some moves on his own that he must had been knowing that was wrong, but we do not know why, we can guess and everybody's guess have the same low truth values, so knock yourself out in competition to be first with the news.
Sgt. Black is reported to had had a dispute with his girlfriend and she called the police on him, apparently she accuses him for stealing 200000 Rubles from her, so he is arrested and the police is investigating the matter, we have to wait for more news.

A Non Commissioned Officer certainly should be educated on geopolitics when stationed in an area next to North Korea - Russia - China.

US soldiers (and their families) are not forbidden from travelling to Russia. However, they are 'strongly discouraged' from doing so (for obvious reasons)
