I did NOT recommend that book to you

  • Do you have friends with different reading preferences?
    I dream of the day when readers learn to respect each other's boundaries and not feel threatened when someone else's boundaries are different.
    Zero-spice readers always complain that they get shamed for NOT wanting spice and the spicy readers always complain that they get shamed FOR wanting it. And both are right.
    SOMEONE out there will be upset no matter what you read. It is still not fair to make blanket statements complaining about "zero-spice readers" or "smut readers" as seems to happen every time there's a dust-up on the issue.
    Most people are reasonable, most people are pretty chill, and most people are cool with letting you do you. (Yes, I struggle to remember this sometimes, but I still believe it's true.)
    📖Road to Fire by Maria Luis is a FANTASTIC book, despite not being what I usually read. It is not Fantasy, but it does have secret societies, political intrigue, British history tidbits, gut-wrenching emotion, and Saxon and Isla have some of the best character development I've seen in a long time. It does have spice, so heads up if that's not your preference.

    • @McBehrer
      @McBehrer Před 6 měsíci +1

      Has she explicitly said she doesn't want to read anything with sexual content? Being asexual doesn't necessarily mean someone doesn't like sexual content, porn, or even having sex. It just means they don't experience sexual attraction to people. A lot of asexual people still have a libido, and even enjoy those things, they just don't experience the same drive to want to do it with SPECIFIC PEOPLE, which is what attraction is.
      Now maybe she IS sex-repulsed, and that's valid, and if she HAS outright told you she doesn't want to interact with any media with sex in it, then so be it. But if she just said "I'm asexual" and you said, "oh, I had better make sure not to expose you to anything with even a hint of horny in it," that may be an overreaction. It might be unnecessarily limiting if you just assume she is without actually talking about it with her.

      @@Sinovianromance and horny are not the same thing. Sometimes people use "romance" as a euphemism for horny, but there's a difference. There's also a difference between ace and aromantic, but that's besides the point.
      There's a wide variety of stories with romantic elements ranging from "boy gets the girl in the end" to "figuring out how feelings work" to small interactions reminding the protagonist why they love their SO to rom-com hijinks to verging into horny territory.

      @@LibertyMonk You're not wrong saying there's a difference between romance and horny. However, most adult romantic fiction is going to include the "horny" scene or at least heavily allude to it. Maybe straight fiction is different, but within the gay romance umbrella that I've personally consumed very few don't include a heated scene. And my sample size is not small.
      Also there's the fact that asexuals can still have sexual fantasies. They just don't typically inject themselves into the scenario as they don't have any desire to personally be involved with it fantasy or not. So asexuals can still enjoy a horny scene, they just experience it differently than perhaps others would. Not to say that this is the experience for every individual, so for the friend mentioned in the original comment, not sharing is probably the right choice for that individual.

    Like I’ve stopped saying the names of books I’m reading unless I’m recommending them. Because a lot of my friends/family also underestimate how gruesome and/or horny some of the things I read are. So I just say “this novel I was reading” or something like it lol
