Astrophysicists Discuss Whether JWST Discovered Alien Exoplanets

- Has JWST found potential alien worlds? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Matt Kirshen learn about exoplanet discovery on the frontier, how higher oxygen gave us dinosaurs, and what type of life could evolve on alien worlds with astrophysicist and astrobiologist Lisa Kaltenegger.
Lisa tells us about breaking down the chemical signature of newfound rocky planets. When will we have telescopes that will see the surface of these exoplanets? If an alien on a different planet pointed a telescope at us, what signs of life would they see? Is there anything they could mistake us for? We explore how geology creates complicated atmospheres and of course the question: what is life?
Could life have landed here on a meteorite and blended in with other life on Earth? We discuss the universality of biology: do the rules of biology apply everywhere? How hard is life to get rid of once it's started? How fast could life evolve on another world? Plus, learn how Earth's oxygen levels contributed to the Jurassic period. We explore extremophiles and whether life could live on asteroids, icy moons, and large rocky planets: Super-Earths. What conditions trigger complex life?
Did human life come from panspermia? Find out about chirality and why we think that all Earth life started from the same source. Why do people really want to think we came from space? We talk about dimethyl sulfur as a biomarker and why its discovery on a Super-Earth may be both promising and potentially misleading. Can we figure out if we are alone or not?

What year do you think we'll finally discover extraterrestrial life? 👽 We'll check back here when it happens to see who guessed right!
Before the end of this century....
I predict it won’t be today, or tomorrow. ✌️
In Roswell NM
Neil, do you ride that skateboard that’s in the background?
2029
Hey Neil, I’m 70 years old now and I do remember watching Carl Sagan every single episode on PBS was on the edge of my seat and had never even remotely considered anything as well as everything he was all about Lisa that you had on today has that same love in her voice and intellect as Carl Sagan did.I hope she goes far and I hope you have her on again. What a beautiful example of a pioneering attitude and a love for life to make the world a better place thank you again for sharing your life with us through the sciences.
Hi, Charles. Carl Sagan was such an inspiration for future generations of engineers, scientists, and, of course, astrophysicists. In particular, he mentored a young high school student who showed interest and enthusiasm for astrophysics. 😊 His novel and movie Contact was one of the most intelligent depictions of an sentient life form more advanced and very different from humans.
I’m convinced that no subject in school was inherently boring, it was the subject’s teacher and their lack of passion and dedication to it. If this man was everyone’s high school science teacher, we would have a civilization on Mars with hovercrafts on it by now 😂
May be if we pay teachers liveable incomes, they will be more passionate
Yeah this is why my History teacher in 8th grade I'll always remember Mr.Roach! Guy has passion and enjoyed teacher. Made it fun to learn also.
Tale some of the responsibility
I have difficulty figuring out how to make spelling not boring, but my not being able to conceive of something does not make it impossible.
I'm from Argentina and in my country school teacher is probably the easiest job to get, so a lot of people is one just to survive
I had to double take when Neil said Dr. Lisa’s last name😂
KALTEN-EGGER, in German means ( COLD-PLOWER ), and SCHWARZEN-EGGER means ( BLACK-PLOWER !) So as you can clearly there is ZERO racial clarification required.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE STARTALK !
Interesting, not a lot if people are commenting on her last name. 😂
i paused the show i was like whattt but then i remembered that Neil is a goat
came down to find this comment lol and also need this 18:51
if only they had Chuck here for that lol
Dr. Lisa's enthusiasm and smile are both so contagious! I would absolutely love a regular podcast all about her field of expertise!
why do scientist always try to be cool and funny? I feel this role is better left to actors or comedians. I came here for the interesting topic, not for those preteen jokes
@@Internet_Enjoyer Neil is relatively funny and has a decent sense of humor. It seems guests are expected to joke around, especially when Chuck is present.
This light conversion is interesting.Because if we observe them with,or without the light, they are dorks.
@@savagestranger neil is funny but his guests not very in my opinion
@@Internet_Enjoyer
Unfortunately for you, these shows have to be enjoyable to many types of people in order to be successful.
Finally, the long lost cousin of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lisa Kaltenegger
The only thing less intelligent than your comment is those who liked it 🤦🏼♂️
Lol when they said "Octopusy"
I am so glad I wasnt the one that had to make this comment...Cause someone ABSOLUTELY had to make this comment. Nice work!
Hey, Lisa tried hard to avoid saying it, but Niel stepped right into that steaming pile.
GahahahHlahaha I laughed when I heard octopusy too hahaha
I can listen to this lady talking about octopus all day, her demeanour is so calm and gentle.
Omg so relaxing
Bet she's fire in the bedroom!
Lisa is fantastic. What a passion for science! Please bring her on the podcast more often.
Lisa Kaltenegger is so animated as she speaks that it's fascinating to watch her and listen. Loved this podcast for the information as well as just listening to the enthusiasm and excitement. It's what makes Dr. Tyson so popular--he's animated and his passion shows whenever he speaks on any subject but particularly in explaining mode.
Makes me feel like a little boy with my face in the cup of my hands kicking my feet back in forth imagining everything they are saying
She talks with such passion, you can see she really enjoys her job and can't never get enough
Now no StarTalk is complete without the Mr. Rogers heart-to-heart at the end. Thanks, Dr. Tyson for bringing the nostalgia.
Kaltenegger is one of the most interesting guests I've seen on this show. I hope she comes back, or makes her own channel.
Two excellent science communicators, who are also admirers of the great Carl Sagan make an excellent 50 minutes on CZcams.
Neill's voice is a great asset when it comes to storytelling, But Ms. Kalteggers matches just the same bar. Both should be hired by audible or made the machines avatar.
She's one of the best star talk guests ever
Please don't ever stop making Startalk. No matter who hosts
Science needs more stages to be talked about
What if he took Dra. Maggie Lieu as the co-host?
Man, I'm going back to the Planetarium this summer. Lisa Kaltenegger's awesome. I'm buying her book!
You all have no idea how many short story ideas I get from these podcasts. Thanks for the inspiration. Now if I'd just submit them. LMBO
My dad passed away and now I consider his energy to be light, relative to me his time has stopped , but for me time ticks on slowly until I pass away and I believe we will just start over. Miss you dad 🫶
Just a blink of the eye my boy.
I read Lisa’s book a couple of months ago. It’s understandable to a layman and very entertaining. It’s one of those books that left me wanting to read more about the subject.
Startalk is always great, but this episode was another level of fun and informative. Thank you, Neil, for what you do! And thank you for bringing Mrs. Kaltenegger on the show - she is so dynamic, bright, sharp, witty and passionate about everything she does and learns. More of her in the public sphere would be good for everyone.
Wonderful. She reminds me of Sagan's awe and excitement for astrophysics.
Reading Dr. Kaltenegger's Alien Earths and I am hooked!
Awesome episode, dangerous last names there LOL
I had to do a double take when Neil pronounced that last name. I was like, wait....ok yeah. Tough one there to be sure lol
Hm. I wonder why the scientists didn't bother mentioning it?
@@j.j.cheesman7141 Because for them it's nothing, and only we as the laymen audience even notice it probably. Plus Dr. Lisa probably heard all the jokes and comments about the name thing at this point I'd imagine.
How is it dangerous?
Maybe your world view is just limited so you make odd judgments 🤷🏻♂️
@@MajorClownShoe it was a joke, relax.
Woah! We have travelled back in time when 720p videos were a huge thing on CZcams! 👀👀😮😮
Lisa's energy is off the scale! Love her enthusiasm and articulate skill.
I just started getting into this type of field again. LOVE THE VIDEOS
Dr. Lisa K. Is a complete gem to such an exciting field. Being a huge fan of Carl and of you, Neil knowing your story and then to see how Lisa carries on with the Science ….just gives me goosebumps. I’m looking forward to getting a copy of Alien Earths asap. I also look forward to positing the idea to Dino crazy seven-year-olds, the idea of PLANETS with dinosaurs and why they should get into the field of exobiology!
She was a PHENOMENAL guest. One of the best episodes on your channel (although I love them all). Thank you!
Wow! I could listen to her discus it all over again. Such passion, and so easy to listen to. Students gotta love her.
Thank you Mr. Tyson for having Matt Kersen on when he interjects a thought he does not throw all my concentration out the window never to be seen again. I hope you have him on continually. I will then resubscribe to your program. I love your work Neil you are totally awesome, so glad you were born and I’m so glad to be coming through this space in time at the same time you are alive and well thank you for sharing all your beauty of communication with us. 70 years old guy in the Philippines . Thank you for personally showing us how to make our world a better place
Good to see Matt back
I wonder how he feels about getting poked.
The crab holding the torch is SpongeBob SquarePants.....lol
This lady is an absolute delight to listen to, the passion behind what she's saying is tangible.
Wow! I absolutely love the way she teaches. Found myself smiling while she talked. Enjoyed this one so much!
❤just love to hear her speak, and her enthusiasm about what she does is infectious
She did that
I can’t believe some of the idiotic and childish comments here, it’s just so sad. I found her so interesting, intelligent and engaging. WOW, what a great person to run the Carl Sagan Institute!
Remember when she said “octopusy” hahahaha
Imagine a regular show with these two as presenters. That would be awesome! A perfect blend of relaxed intelligence with uncommon niceness.
I wish I had that passion when I’m talking about my work! Big props to her, super smart and relatable
Love everyone's energy in this ep
Ok... Lisa is so engaging and awesome!
The most maternally voiced astrophysicist around.
@@Roguescienceguy Seriously! Most of my professors sounded like the teacher in Ferris Bueller's Day Off!
Fantastic questions. Fantastic guests. She was so engaging, is clearly in love with this stuff, and you can see the passion in her eyes. She lights up about these topics, and it's really enjoyable to see.
The three of you were a pleasure to watch. I'm captivated by these topics myself, and I wish I had pursued advanced physics further while in college. I'm sure my grandfather, who was a physicist at the Pentagon, would have been proud if I had. Maybe I need to go back to school though!
I love when nerds get together and talk things out with reason. Especially smart ones! Thank you!🤓
PLEASE! PLEASE FIND LIFE ON OTHER PLANETS ALREADY!
I *NEED* IT!
Maybe you need to less than you think…? 😮😋
@ 2:11 and 18:51 neil is on a roll 😭
I found her audiobook "Alien Earths" on audible. Even though she doesn't do all the reading herself, she does the introduction. I bought it immediately
"Yo can you stop touching my face?"
-Me probably 😂
I love watching this because after I feel so smart that iss until i start trying to explain what i heard to someone else 😂
The struggle of my life lol. Just a friendly reminder how dumb I actually am so I leave it alone
science-communication is a field of expertise most people have to learn before they can do it properly
Girl, your necklace is amazing. You slay! I loved your intelligent take in this episode. 🖤
Dr. Kaltenegger's curiosity, enthusiasm and love for her science brings me to literal tears. Made my day.

You know, I never had the thought occur to me that out there somewhere, there are aliens who know we're here, maybe even just discovered us, and they're FREAKING OUT. Whoa
Trust me, if they see us, they wont freak out but instead plan a bloodbath.
Or they think we’re still in a Jurassic period

Very interesting conversation. Loved it. Lisa kaltenegger is an absolute joy to listen to, so upbeat and intelligent.
Neil's awesome!
Can't think of anything that should be more interesting to humans on this planet than potentially finding life on other worlds. There is so much to be learned and so much to potentially grow. There are bound to be big surprises for us.
What a wonderful channel, thank you for all the content❤
Great show , should have Lisa on at least once a month
I wanna be a future scientist and astrophysist but my parents wont let me. I really wanna meet sir Neil deGrasse Tyson and talk about all my own questions about universe and God. I hope i meet you one day. From Saudi Arabia and India
I have the same dream. I'm too young to actually do anything about it but hopefully in the future I can start. I wish the best of luck on your journey to accomplish your dream!
“Parents won’t let me”?
That's a shame, usually parents can be expected to support going into a science career. Neil deGrasse Tyson does like to discuss what we know about the universe, but about God/spirituality he generally will say that he doesn't see sufficient evidence and his discussions on the topic tend to disappoint those interested investigating them.
When he asked Steve-O what questions Steve-O had for him, Steve-O was interested in asking questions about life after death, but he seemed disappointed in Neil's answers. It's about 40 minutes into the following interview:

Love her. Just simply love her. Wish she was my teacher in the early days. Her all being is fascinating
Lisa is pretty awesome! She has an almost tamed childlike wonder and enthusiasm just when she speaks! I wonder what it is like being in the lab with her!
I noticed she has a very occasional pronunciation difference. So I looked at her entry on Wikipedia. It says she is Austrian, which are very often excellent English speakers. Fortunately she was not "tainted" by British English.

Neil, I love it when you allow someone to finish a thought. You should do it much more often. Great job!
It''s hard to make life in the lab because students are always coming in and looking away and saying "Oh, gee, sorry, Professor, I swear I din't see anything. I'll just walk back out. You carry on with what you were doing."
Honestly i wouldn't even try to pronounce her name
Well, to be fair, Neil wouldn't get in trouble for it.
Why
Don't be scared of other's ignorance.
Where's Chuck? I miss his sense of humor
AWESOME SHOW AS USUAL😊
Dr. Lisa is mesmerizing!
Why does this chat feel so patronising?
Welcome to Neil’s comment sections. People think they can listen to Neil and his guests long enough to be on their level cognitively. Stunning!
It is. Neil suffers NPD and is a male. Always patronizing
@@butternutsauce that people in this chat can not be on the same cognitive level shows you level of intelligence. Go read the definition of cognition. There is a doc about life starting in two phases, as if it was partially made in two or more "not life yet" structure, than they suffered some different chemical reactions and when they "mixed" up they were able to step ahead to life.
You both interrupted her during so many questions just why? let her finish her science talks man we’re not here for jokes but for real information ffs
She literally stole over so many questions from neil and admitted to it lol
You must be new here ?
Read her books if you're looking for information. You want to be spoon fed. This isn't a scientific forum it's a damn podcast.
Real information is in books and journals and universities. Get real weirdo
If you don't want fun and jokes, you are watching the wrong podcast.
why do scientist always try to be cool and funny? I feel this role is better left to actors or comedians. I came here for the interesting topic, not for those preteen jokes🤷♀
first 6 minutes 0 content just these "jokes" .... kinda boring
You're being pathetic, this isn't a scientific forum, this is a podcast and these people are humans too with personalities and quirks just like you. Interests and humor.
Go read a book instead. That's what you're looking for. While you're at it read a few books on how to act assimilate with humans.
I don't know what planet you came from but on Terra we don't socialize based on roles and expectations. We like diversity and fun when we socialize. We use roles and rules and stern seriousness for specialty forums and debates.
We hope you enjoy your stay.
That view is ancient. The scientists that would leave the labs to carry out the very important task of science communication to a modern distracted public that is distracted with so many media consuming options, MUST be cool, funny, and interesting as a first order prerequisite. Or their programme would be swiped by viewers.
