Thanks for the video. That took me like 5 minutes and I was then able to mow the lawn. For a minute, I was thinking I might need my wife to buy me a new mower for Christmas but now I am all set, she can buy me that new Snowboard.
I watched this video and then opened up my mower. Mine had the exact same problem as shown in the video. What a time saver this video was! Hat's off to Red Barn Homestead!
Good video...had same problem and followed your instructions. I did not see any brushes in the fashion you demonstrated. However, I pushed the electrical wire back down of the contact point and it started like a champ. Kudos for simple 3 min instruction to get the mower running!!!
Research is awesome. That being said, I love this mower. This video is a few years old and ours is still running today. I run it in discharge mode, which is no mulching plug, the rear door down.
Good fix thanks. Unlike your situation, my brushes appeared to be correctly located but I pushed them anyway to be sure. Reassembled the switch, this is the first place I checked, and away the mower went. Note to self, check CZcams first!
Thank you for this video. I have the exact same mower, and I decided to get an additional battery. Same exact battery, but it won't run the mower, even when fully charged!! Charge and put in the old battery, mower works. Don't know what to do!!
That is strange and leads me to believe it’s a dead battery. We got a 2nd battery at a yard sale and it works great. You can almost run one all the way down while the other charges all the way up.
Wow, this is exactly what was wrong with my mower. Thank you! I have a different brand so this may be a common problem for many types of battery powered mowers.
I wish I had seen your video before I went exploring as I started with the handle switch thinking the issue might be there and when I opened it it popped out in pieces, so I have to try to put it back together and then try your solution.
I have a Greenworks chain saw that won't run, just makes a click when I squeeze the trigger button. Maybe it has the same sort of motor problem? This video gives me an idea what to try before the bother of returning it.
well I loved the try and easy fix it stopped I recharged the batteries took off top did the push back in as requested ... yeah but it did not START the brushes looked a bit burt on about two of them but still rest looked like great new copper wiring.. I retried and NO LUCK in my mower there is a square black box next to the motor I unplugged and re plugged all I could see but still no start.. Could the part in the black square be bad.. the mower is an older 19 " greenworks I love it but it just wont start even with the easy fix you suggested and I did push it back in help
It's a phillips screwdriver. Be sure to pick the one that fits exactly as the screws may be rusted on the bottom and you can easily strip the screw, and then you will have a really big problem on your hands, you'll have to drill it out.
I have this mower and was about to take it in to have it worked on. But decided to see if there is a fix on here. Before I go unscrewing stuff, one question, my mower will work for a while and then if I shut it off and try to start it again it won't. Then later, about two hours, it will start. Please help me, I'm on a fixed income and really can't afford to buy and new mower or even have this one fixed. Thanks.
My greenworks mower wont start and have checked the brushes. A friend identified the problem as electrical switch disconnect. But need a photo of the inside correct arrangement of pieces and wires to reconnect correctly. Can you help?
You probably don’t need a photo, it’s a basic DC system, so follow it out from the battery to the motor and nothing should cross. Your handlebar switch should also be the only interruption in the system.
Well, the blade should be free spinning with the battery out and you move it by hand. If that doesn’t happen then there is a mechanical issue with the electric motor. If it won’t run to mow the grass, then most likely it’s the brushes, which brought you here. Other issues are wiring related, like the safety switch not clicking which maybe an issue, or perhaps a battery issue.
Likely a warranty issue, something isn’t right. As soon as we repaired the motor brush issue, our unit had been a solid running. I run it as a rear discharge mower and it’s so light it makes mowing a breeze.

My 40 what battery on Greenworks is extremely hard to remove why
You saved me. Had the new lawn mower in the cart ready to buy and thought hmmm let me check CZcams real quick. 🏆
Research is awesome. That being said, I love this mower. This video is a few years old and ours is still running today. I run it in discharge mode, which is no mulching plug, the rear door down.
Thank you so much for this video! You saved my mower from “permanent retirement.”
Awesome. Glad it helped!
Good fix thanks. Unlike your situation, my brushes appeared to be correctly located but I pushed them anyway to be sure. Reassembled the switch, this is the first place I checked, and away the mower went. Note to self, check CZcams first!
Wow, it’s cool you got it going again!
thanks for psoting! exactly my problem, I just took a zip tie and went around the housing to keep brush assemblies form backing out.
Wish I had thought to do that, I may have to take the cover off again to push the brush(es) back in.
Thank you for this video. I have the exact same mower, and I decided to get an additional battery. Same exact battery, but it won't run the mower, even when fully charged!! Charge and put in the old battery, mower works. Don't know what to do!!

Yay, at last I've fixed my Worx lawnmower, thanks to you. Take a bow.
I’m glad that worked for you! It’s nice to have your mower back.
thanks for the tip. I just bought a 16" 40V Greenworks. Love it. But if it ever fails to start, I will check this first.
Sounds good. Some models are brushless so this wouldn’t be an issue.
thank you so much.. the exact same problem happened to me, and this fixed it!
Wow, this is exactly what was wrong with my mower. Thank you!
I have a different brand so this may be a common problem for many types of battery powered mowers.
Glad to hear it helped!
There is a repair video in our playlist just after this one with a tear down and fix.
Thank you so much sorted mine in 2 minutes!
Perfect!
It worked! Thanks for the assist
Glad we could help.
You just saved me $120 😅
I wish I had seen your video before I went exploring as I started with the handle switch thinking the issue might be there and when I opened it it popped out in pieces, so I have to try to put it back together and then try your solution.
I had figured it was the switch too until I did a bit of CZcams digging and got sent in this direction. Since the repair it’s been great.
Thanks. Video solved my problem. Great help.
You are welcome. I made the video people CZcams didn't help me much trying to find why it didn't start.
thanks bro great job ,,mine was 3 years old it should last longer than that
Ours did it after a year....several years later its still going great.
Thank you, you help fixed my issue.🎉
Always good to hear this video helped someone. 😀
All the good people! We're here! 🎉
Nice!
Great advice , just needed torx allen key to remove screws. Easy fix
Good luck!
Thus is one reason why I got the version with a brushless motor
Good idea but it’s not a hard fix.

You might need to track down where the voltages stops going and try that.
Thank you
You bet, hope it helped.
Could you do a similar video for the Greenworks Brush Cutter?
My batteries are both charged but won't work;
just keeps beeping at me...
Wish I could but we don’t have one.
Can you let me know what tool I can buy to remove the screws/bolts on the top front as you describe in your video? Thank you.
It's a phillips screwdriver. Be sure to pick the one that fits exactly as the screws may be rusted on the bottom and you can easily strip the screw, and then you will have a really big problem on your hands, you'll have to drill it out.
@@jimvandyke7116 no it is not a phillips. not on mine. you said a 220 torque. that's the pressure not the type correct?
Hello. On the right path, it’s a T-20 Torx (often called a Star bit), found in most multi-bit kits, often shown as a T20 on the side. Hope that helps.
@@RedBarnHomestead Thank you and thank you for this video.
@@RedBarnHomestead idk what right path means - right side? when look at it from the front or the as if moving? a starbit takes the cover off?

Not sure this is your issue but if you have some mechanical skills and a volt meter, you can find out why it stops running.

Did you ever fix this? Maybe that is my problem too but all the wires seem to be fine, not sure what I should be looking for otherwise.
My 40V mower after adjusting the brushes, mower still don’t work. what other causes not yo work. Pls . help. tThamk you.
You’d need to use a volt meter and see if the brushes are getting power. Could be a switch issue, could be a battery issue, lots of things.
Thanks for this video! I opened mine and one of the connections wasn't connected to the brushes
That’s good, I mean it’s bad but glad you found out why.
How to open the shield. They are different screws used
It’s held down with screws. There is another video showing the process.
Well shoot! I thought by now everyone would be using brushless motors. I guess they save a few dollars by going brushed.
And age, but yeah, its a thing and needs to be fixed.
My damn blade won’t move. Any idea why
Well, the blade should be free spinning with the battery out and you move it by hand. If that doesn’t happen then there is a mechanical issue with the electric motor. So I've had mi 16" 40v literally since April 8th 2022. The battery is fully charged all 4 lights lit up and won't start. Guess I will give it a try.
Totally, I went to CZcams what it could be and didn't find a great video, so I did it myself.
@@RedBarnHomestead i finally returned mine and got a replacement. I haven't used it yet.
Mine starts but it won’t stay stay going
That’s strange but could be the same problem.
czcams.com/video/4BAWN54zeEo/video.html try this link if your “brushes” are ok - just bend the starter bracket!
My battery turns on for 4 seconds then off. It’s fully charged!
Second use brand new

Greenworks was dropped from my local John Deere dealership.
Now I know why .
Piece of $#@$
Not really. Mine is several years old and still running great.
💪🏿thanks this rectified my mower also.. i appreciate you 🫶🏿
Thank you.
