    I bought one of these from a Hawaiin grower. I live in Southern Utah and it get's to be around 100-110 degree's. We have whats called the Mexican Bird of Paradise, but they don't take a lot of water. But, the tropical Bird of Paradise is a lot different than the Mexican Bird of Paradise. I plan on keeping it inside since I don't know how the heat will be for it. But, if anyone of your subscribers knows how they would do inside or it they would do good outside. I just worry about our extreme summers. St. George, Utah is 2 hours from Las Vegas and our summers are the same as theirs. The Purple and Orange BOP has always been one of my favorite flowers and I didn't think I could get any shipped to me. I was and am super excited. So, if anyone has any advice, let me know.

I live in the northern part of Florida, and it has survived freezing temperatures, especially when we had Vortex temperatures a couple of years ago. I'm surprised it survived. It is tough. They also spread and pop up out of the ground with new leaves attached to the roots. (Self propagation) I know if you cut them and put in water for decoration purposes in a vase filled with water, they last weeks.

    I live in Canada and put mine outside in the summer in a place where it gets full sun for only a third of the day but the leaves still burn at the edges and it grows so tall that the leaves bend over and break. However when I bring it in and put it in a bright window for the winter, it will grow one or two flowers by January. It is seriously pot bound with the roots coming out the bottom of the pot and curling round it. I am going to have to cut these roots to get it out of the pot. Will this do it any harm or make it stop flowering if I transplant it? Will transplanting it make it grow fuller instead of taller?

      I break the pot if planted in a clay pot. If in plastic here is a trick: Water the day before to have soil a LITTLE damp. Place pot on its' side & ROLL it until it is loose enough to glently pull out. I have never cut roots on any plant. This trick works on any plant. Good luck from the Louisiana Delta.

    I apologize in advance for these negative comments that you are about to read about bird of paradise. i want to provide words of caution for anyone who is thinking about planting a b.o.p. And, if I was only allowed one word only, it's" "don't". B.O.P. grow like weed and has an invasive (destructive) root system. We have not watered it in years and yet it blooms in late spring / early summer. I am in the middle of removing one from our yard. I don't know its age, but we have been at this house for 22 years old. The foliage of the plant had a 6 foot diameter and was 5 feet tall; the roots are likely 12 feet in diameter and I do not yet know how deep; thus far, i have only dug 8 to 12 inches and counting. How do I know its diameter? It's the width of the concrete block wall that it slowly dislodged and then filled the opening. Admittedly, the wall was not very well built as inherited from the previous owner, who may or may not have been the ones to have put it up. In any case, I have spent no less than 12 hours using pick-axe, shovel, 14" electric chainsaw and today an 18" gas chainsaw in the process. I have so far filled 6 trash bins worth of debris and will probably fill another 2-3 bins before I reach my intended goal, which is simply to level to the existing adjacent grade. Yes, the roots grew and heaved the soil upward over the years too. As you can imagine a plant with a 6 foot diameter is quite a bit, but the roots are worse, because it relatively soft and break apart when you dig in. I would describe the structure of b.o.p. as a massive bundle of celeries attached to a massive network of roots much like a hairball. So....unless you never (and I do mean never) intend to move a b.o.p. go for it. And, if you must, please plant it away from any walls or structures, and do keep it in check. I think leaving potted is a good alternative. Good luck.

    • @LarrysTropicals
      @LarrysTropicals  Před 9 lety +3

      Jane Rathmanner NEVER cut it down. The leaves it has is the leaves it will have. The plant needs to be sustained because it does not grow leaves like other plants. Once it hits a certain leaf count, it will bloom, after that it will be another 2-4 years before it blooms again if you cut the leaves off.
