Giant White Bird of Paradise Pruning and Propagating an Offshoot to Grow Another Strelitzia Nicolai

- The Giant Bird of Paradise also known as the White Bird of Paradise is a large beautiful tropical plant that grows huge banana type leaves. My Giant Bird of Paradise suffered a little bit of frost damage and I need to prune the older brown leaves to keep it looking beautiful. I also propagate an offshoot to grow another plant.
The plant's scientific name is Strelitzia Nicolai. It is not the Orange Bird of Paradise. This plant grows a white and dark purple flower, not an orange flower. The plant was easy to prune using a pruning saw. It only takes a few minutes to cut off the damaged leaves.
Propagating an offshoot on the Giant Bird of Paradise was a different story. Cutting through the rhizome was tough with the pruning saw. I had to go back and forth using my shovel and pruning saw to finally separate the offshoot from the mother plant. I divided the offshoot with a bit of the rhizome and potted it up to keep in my greenhouse.
After two months in the greenhouse, it still hadn't grown any roots. It is spring now, so I decided to plant it in my tropical garden. I expect it to grow since part of the rhizome is still attached to the plant. I hope it grows in my tropical garden this summer.

Thanks this was the only video I found where someone does it outside dividing one from the ground instead of in a pot. I have 2 enormous white bird of paradises have at least six big flowering stems each that are taller than a two storey house. It has loads of small offshoots and just wanted to see how to do it. They’re so big that if it doesn’t work it won’t matter. They’ll probably be cut down soon because they’re too big and dangerous so I’ll try to get some propagated before they’re cut down. The flowers on it are humongous. But I just like the leaves
Thank you for this video 😊
It truly is hard to cut away and I haven’t had any success doing this but I’m going to try it again cutting towards the large one like you did. I’ve got too many growing in the same spot and would love to put some in other areas before they’re too big. ( a few are over 12 feet high!) thank you!
Great video!
Good job 👍. One plant more 😍💪. Best regards 🙏 ☀️ 🌴
GREAT VIDEOTHANK YOU BEST REGARDS
.Great video ! 🌿😊🌿 Plants are the best, specially the people behind them 🌿🤩🌿 You got a new sub from Denmark .☀️🌿😊🇩🇰..
I transplanted my BoP from pot to ground today. :)
Can you cut the trunk/stem to half the size to help them grow? Mine were hit by the freeze and are 10’ to 20’ tall, new growth keeps dying
Have you been able to see if it survived yet? Would be very interesting to know. Thanks!
The shovel that I use in the video is the
I've had a hard time finding out how to cut a baby from a giant BOP to replant in another location. What do you recommend? Thanks!
Did it survive?😊
