If you have a lot of small growth, Select those that in the future, will be a strong stock/trunk that is growing in the correct direction...otherwise Eliminate it!
When pruning the taller trunks, eliminate leaves on each side by balancing them, cutting them from the inside out. Make the cuts at an angle, the same height so it looks more attractive that way. (2:11)
Remove the dead flowers by pulling them off.
Select the strongest, best growth every 1-2 years. Select small, medium, large and largest sizes of trunks.
If a branch is getting close to a roof of a building, it's time to Eliminate it! Cut it with the hand saw carefully and toward an area that is open, as not to cause damage to other plants/people/animals/vehicles, etc. For branches that are close to other things, use a rope and tie it around the top part of the tree near the flowers, and have someone pull the rope away and make the cut!

Thank you for your great video! I am caring for large bird of paradise plants which are potted indoors at a furniture store. There is a glass ceiling so they get lots of light. One of the large main stalks just fell over and left a big stump. I am going to get a Corona knife to deal with it. Thanks for the recommendation!

Not sure how to describe this, Do you leave the brown thick pruned trunks? At the bottom of the plant, I have layers of brown thick trunks/stems after Ive pruned. They are still firm and not loose

I have many that were damaged in the hurricane if I cut them to the ground will they grow back?
They will grow back babies from the system of the old stock, like a clump.
That stock that got damaged will grow back more babies. Good luck and keep me updated!
Any idea how to stop them all leaning away from the fence, instead of straight up please? Also does it matter if I keep cutting off the flower (or the thing that looks like the bird) I just think they look messy.
First, I image the fence is tall because it sounds like it’s giving a lot of shade to the plant. The stalks are growing away from the fence looking for sunlight. I have two ideas: One is cutting all the babies that are growing close to the fence as much as possible away from the fence. Second idea is the new babies that are growing should be staked to direct the growth closer to the fence. Later on they will continue growing closer to the fence.
It doesn’t matter if you cut off the flower. You are right, they are messy. I usually clean all the flowers. In my opinion, the beauty of the giant bird of paradise is the clump itself and the foliage, not the flower.

I’ve been trimming the husk and now it looks like a palm tree trunk. My other Birds have a thicker “v” fan trunk in the center. Why is this? I trim them both the same way. Very useful video. Thank you and any other advice to make the Birds look beautiful?
Probably one is older so it has more trunk. The younger one maybe needs to get a little older to show more of the trunk. Is one older than the others?

Hi. Several of my birds are way too high and have a lot of dead stuff I can’t reach. If I just cut as high as I can reach, will it have new growth, or must I cut at ground level? Thanks for your video. I learned a lot from it
When you cut the bird of paradise, it will not have new growth. Best thing would be to cut it all the way from the bottom and allow the newer plants to continue growing. Maybe hire a pruner to clean it up for you since you can't reach. If you live in North Orange County, call me! :) Best of luck!

I’m in SW Florida and have many in clumps that are 20 ft tall and blooming regularly. The roots are invasive at this point and encroaching the walls of our koi pond. Any idea how to get the root system out without killing the whole clump?
Oh shoot! If you have enough clumps my recommendation is to remove totally the clump closest to the pond. Cut it at the base. For example if is a clump with 10 trunks, remove 3 of them. Cut the trunk plus the roots. Fill up the hole with gravel. Piece of cake!

How do you keep the new shoots that you cut off from growing back. I have to keep cutting them weekly.
Yes, the clump of bird of paradise needs to be maintained. The new growth needs to be cut every month, 3 months, 6 months. Some clumps grow faster than others. It all depends on water, fertilizer, sunlight, ufos. I don’t recommend putting any chemicals to stop new growth either.

Wait until the cold weather is over. Remove all the leaves that are totally dead. Any leaves that has alive material, leave them. Leave the leaves alone that are alive so they generate new energy for the plant. I would recommend that when spring starts, fertilize it with a fertilizer 16-6-8, a fertilizer that has some nitrogen, like ammonia sulfate, according to the directions of the manufacturer. The nitrogen will stimulate new leaf growth and stronger leaves.

Will the trunk Re sprout if you cut the top off if it is too tall?
We have some that are 8-10 meters tall and I would like to lower them

Hi William, the trunk will not re sprout. You will just have to remove them totally from a couple inches above the ground. I hope there are some shorter babies that will be left. If so, the babies will grow up eventually.

🤣 No chain saw…butchers use chainsaws!! 😆 I use hand clippers and a hand saw for more precise cutting.
I tried chainsaw. Not good. Too wet and tight. chain slipped. You can cut these with kitchen knife but its quite a chore. Hand saw much better. Corona is a good brand
Would you tell me how to cut down some 30-foot birds that are between my pool and the neighbor’s fence? They have to fall GENTLY on the pool.

Is there anything we can do with a giant one that is too tall? We live in Wisconsin so we need to bring it into the heated garage over winter. Last winter it wasn’t as tall. Now it is like 12” tall!
The only thing that could be done is wait for the new babies to grow and remove the tallest trunk.

Wow, I don’t think so, it’ll die. It’s like planting the trunk of a palm tree. It won’t grow back. Same thing for the giant bird of paradise, it won’t grow roots. But it is a good question and you could try if you want to…let me know!
Do these damage pools? We have 2 by our in ground pool and they are getting huge.
Yeah, they could. The best thing to do when the clump grows is to remove the new stalks growing on the side. They will push the concrete to the point of damage, eventually…in 1000 years, 10 years, 6 months, 15 years…
How about when all of the giant heads are clumped together ? They look dead when they’re all clump! Are you supposed to cut them off?
If the giant heads are dead, cut the branch off at the bottom. It’s okay to think it out.

We have a giant BOP clump in the corner of our backyard. We have enjoyed them for 24 years, they are huge. Planted by the original owners around 1953. I would like to cut one of the babies for a neighbor to plant in her yard. How should I do that? We live in SoCal. Thank you!!

Will the large stocks regrow?
If you cut the trunk it will not regrow.
A young bird of Paradise regrows with suckers at the trunk as a clump. Every two or three months, it makes a new growth around the old trunk. The tallest trunks can by cut 4 feet from the ground. Leave there for 6 months to give strengths to new growth at the bottom of the trunk, giving support to the. After the babies grow 6-8 months, you can remove the whole trunk from the bottom.
Should I prune my smaller indoor bird of paradise the same way?
No, it’s a different growth at the clump. The giant bird of paradise has a stalk or clumps. The regular bird of paradise is more of a grassy looking clump so it has to be pruned differently.
Thank you for your video! One question. When you are cutting off the large limbs from a big center stalk, I noticed that you make nearly a 45-degree cut. Is there a reason for that, such as keeping support for the center stalk? Could I cut the old leaf and stalk/stem off by making a near-parallel cut to the main stalk? In other words, so the cut is less noticeable? Thank you.
First when you make a 45 degree cut, the possibility of the water to run off from the cut is greater. Especially in a place where it rains a lot. The 45 cut aesthetically looks better too.

When is a good time for this
It depends on the state where you are. In Southern or Northern California it’s a good idea not to prune in winter. Being a tropical plant the cold weather can get into the tissues of the fresh cut and could damage the plant.
Other than that it could be pruned in spring, fall and summer. Remember it is a tropical plant.
