- A couple of years ago I repotted a large white bird of paradise in a vlog and I thought I would do a dedicated video on just that topic, without it being inside of a vlog. In this video I go over how to repot bird of paradise plants and just potting bird of paradise in general. Topics such as: soil for bird of paradise, watering bird of paradise, fertilizing bird of paradise and lighting for bird of paradise are covered. Overall, how to grow bird of paradise with the exception of growing bird of paradise indoors or growing bird of paradise as a houseplant. Bird of paradise make wonderful houseplants if given plenty of light, water and room to grow.

I have a very teenie tiny Bird of Paradise, I am so excited after a long 8 months~I see growth!!! Woopee!!! Thanks for taking the time to go over the repotting! I am so excited, it reached 88-90 degrees here in AZ within the past 4 days & I have been out preparing. I just kinda mumble mumble & dote on my garden. We were outta dirt at our dump for just about a month, so it has made me appreciate my soil bound things! :) Great Video!

Hi Jeff! That's one big plant! The roots were amazing. I think they are a really pretty plant, but I don't have the room, or right light, for one. I'll just enjoy yours. Your so kind and considerate, even to your plants. Another thing that I love about you and your videos. Thank you so much for sharing! It's supposed to be 86° today, then a cold front and 70° tomorrow, dropping into the low 60's the rest of the week. I'm anxious for the weather to be more consistent. Great video Jeff, this is such a great plant to have, I always seen the orange one not a white, they look best when allowed to clump up like yours. People often split them but find the wow factor goes. Look forward to seeing it flourish and flower. Enjoy your week in your garden 😁🐾☀️
Hey you! I agree, they look better when clumping. I do think that just one looks good only if it is in prestine condition with perfectly symmetrical growth on each side. I still think you kind of of the natural appeal that way though.

I’ve never tried a bird of paradise plant as an indoor plant. They are usually exclusively grown outside here. Great video! 💚

3 or 4 videos into your channel and you got my subscription ... and got me thinking I DO want to go get that poor lonely Bird of Paradise in my local grocery store - as it was just $15 last week when I oogled the day lights out of it! Sure, some brown spots and dead bits - but I have a knack of "saving" the ugly ones - just ask my monsteras that looked so sad in their grocery store photo that my roomies said 'bring them home'!
Loving your videos ... AND that desk situation you have to watch your fish from while you work!!! I love octopuses! Dolphin are cool too. I'd have to put a sheet of glass over it though ... I need to be able to draw on a flat surface ;)

No problem! The ones in this video are the white bird of paradise, they get pretty big before they flower. The orange bird of paradise is the more classic one to grow for flowers. They stay smaller and the flowers are very attractive.

The bird is the word!! Now I'm going to go home this evening and check to see if I have any "bursting action" going on with the pot. Wow that root ball did dry out quick! I had that happen with a polka dot plant I repotted recently and it surprised me

Hi Jeff. After watching your Vlog I've had a rare idea. When considering whether a plant needs repotting and roots are breaking out of the side of the pot, this should be named the "Incredible Hulk " sign-of course a subtle nod to the great Dr David Banner clothes ripping transformation into the green skinned Avenger. On a more serious note thanks for the advice re Birds of Paradise. I have 2 of the orange ones. Approx one third the size of yours so some way to go until flowering! Cheers
Haha! I love that! The orange will flower when they are much smaller, usually within 3 to 5 years they'll start putting a show. This could be the year!

Hey Judy! Yeah they certainly aren't the smartest houseplant to keep unless you have some very high ceilings, mine still have about 6 feet of clearance in the grow space, but man oh man, they take up a huge footprint with those big leaves!
I'm going to use the Miracle Gro Performance Organics for this plant. How much perlite do you think I should put in it or any at all? My pot is roughly 24" in height 12" wide, placed indoors, and I'm worried there way be an issue with drainage for that height.
This video was super helpful thank you!! I am planning to repot my bird of paradise for the first time and I got a bag of miracle grow potting mix and a bag of organic peat moss. Was planning to do a 50/50 mix - any thoughts on that approach?

I live in Las Vegas Nevada and I just planted my first 2 - juvenile Large Bird of Paradise aka Strelitzia Nicolai in a raised bed up against the South East side of my House. They look okay 👌 but I know they are going through the shock/adjustment time and with in approximately three weeks they should become use to there new home.
I'm looking forward to seeing them grow up and Bloom.
I'm thinking about buying a couple more of the small ones and sorta make a clump out of them.

Do I need to water more after repotting?
I repotted one a couple of weeks ago and it had started browning at the base of the shoots. 😔 And it's looking wilty in that area but still moist and not dry wilty.
Not sure if it's in shock or I need to keep soil extra moist. I don't want it to get water logged.

Hello TPP, was wondering if you can cut or divide a BOP, I'm looking at 5:10 of your video and it looks like you could separate into 2 plants. I inherited a BOP that's gotten out of control. Thank you!
I got mine from Home Depot last summer and it appears to be potted fully in coco coir. I think it's due for a repot (it's given me six new leaves in a year lol, it's drooping a lot, I can't really get a chopstick in without it sounding/feeling like I'm breaking roots). It's super dry where I live. Is a full coco coir substrate appropriate/should I continue with that when I repot? Or try to swap it for something more soil based?
Hi Jeff! Thank you for this helpful video. I’m getting ready to get my first BOP plant and want to ask you if you think the ProMix Premium Potting Mix will work well for it. Is there anything else I should include for optimal health and growth?
Hi Beth! They aren't too picky with potting mix as long as it drains well, which should be the case for promix. Since you are using fresh potting mix there shouldn't be anything extra needed to keep the plant happy. In a few months it wouldn't hurt to add some slow release fertilizer or a soil amendment like earthworm castings or sea kelp.

Can you make a video about the bird of paradise problems? 2 days after I got mine the lower leave started to get a brown lines in the middle of it then it spread all over it , now it’s brown and yellow. Don’t know what happened to it!

Leaves yellowing and browning that quickly after purchase is not likely due to anything you did wrong. Sometimes they go through a shock of their environment is drastically and suddenly changed. Yellowing and browning can also be caused from too much water/poor drainage in the container.

Is it possible to divide the bird of paradise if to big?
thanks for the informative video! i am doing a patio revamp, and purchased a 21” diameter pot that i wanted to put a young BOP into (it’s about 3’ tall and in a 1.75gal nursery pot that is probably 10-12” in diameter). is that going to be too much extra space?
If it were being kept indoors, with lower temps then I would advise to go smaller. However, outside when it's nice and warm, it should be fine. Bird of paradise tend to haul their foliar growth until their roots fill out the containers. That would be the big downside to a large upgrade, it might sit still for longer before aggressively putting out new growth. Planting some annuals around the perimeter of the container will help also. They will take up extra moisture that would otherwise sit around in the soil and potentially rot the roots of the bird of paradise.

I just got a bird of paradise so I am still learning how to care for it. I have had it for almost two months and it has given me 2 leaves,. One was already sprouting when I bought it. I don't have it in full sun it's indoors close to a window with lots of light and it's planted in coco coir type medium. I just recently added some worm castings to the plant. I have a use a watering meter because it's in a big pot I wait till it's almost dry.... Is that the right care for it? I also mist it everyday
Sounds like you're doing great! Unless you live in a very dry and / or cool climate, they really are pretty simple and easy to grow plants, especially when they get bigger. 😊
Any tips on how to keep my ficus plant full! It just looks so sad. It has leaves but man are they falling off quickly and daily! Help!
Hello! Sorry for the delay getting back to you. Ficus can be a pain indoors. In general they need very bright light and be allowed to dry some between waterings. As much as 75% dry for normal climates, but if you live somewhere arid like the desert, I'd wouldn't let them dry more than 50%. .. however, the ficus lyrata can take more water, but I'd still let them dry more in between waterings than what a lot of people suggest.

Hey there! Haven't been tubing plant videos because of winter here in NYC, but I have a question about the "root base only"for a BOP...
I receive a baby bop but the leaves perished. I cut them off, cut off a little top part of root to see if its still green and replanted in a small pot to hopefully regrow again
Was that a good idea on my part because if it can be saved I don't have a problem waiting for it to grow
Hello! I'd say you did the right thing. Wouldn't hurt to give it some fertilizer after it has had about 2 to 4 weeks to adjust to the new pot and soil. 😊

Hello! Personally I prefer plastic for them. Their roots get really big and aggressive and it can be hard getting them out of ceramic pots when it's time to repot them. Plastic doesn't look as nice, but it is convenient not having to worry about breaking the pot when it's time to repot. Can always set the plastic container inside of more decorative pot to mask it.
So to be honest though, I don't think it looks bad stretched out like that, I mean I know it's probably supposed to be more Stout right? But it does look good as a Jolly Green Giant. I've seen some in the store before and I shyed away from them, even though I think they're gorgeous plants. I know they need lots of light and I have none of that in my house I mean I have light in my house but I wouldn't really say I have anywhere in my house that would B good for High light plant. Maybe someday in the near future when I move it'll be one of my housewarming gifts!
Oh this one isn't even that bad as far being stretched is concerned, I've seen way worse. They look good either way to me, I just love the growth from and habit, like mini travellers palms. ..except not that mini bc these still get huge. Lol!
Hi, quick question! Birds of Paradise was one of the first plants I got so I repotted it after a couple months, without realizing that they like to be a bit snug in the pot. Since then, it hasn't shown signs of new growth. Do you have any recommendations or does this plant just take a while to produce a new leaf?
Hi, Anna! You weren't wrong to repot the plant. It's often times a good idea to get new plants into a fresh soil that works better for houseplant growing. They will normally sit still for a while after being bumped up a pot size. It might look like the plant isn't growing, but it is busy spreading It's roots out to fill the pot. Once it's roots have gotten more snug it will likely take off with new growth as long it's getting everything else it needs. 😊

Hey Parker, I do still have it, I let it go dormant for winter, and to make room for my yuccas I moved it back out in March, which may have been too early. No signs of life on it, and it should've started flushing back out by now. So I have it, but im 99% that she hella dead🙃😏
Devide the plant unto 3 plants and then plant each into own pot,
I thought about that, but I don't need more plants right now, I already have another large one and between the one in the video and my other, they take up so much room in my growspace during the winter.

Can you use small stones/rocks instead of packing peanuts when repotting?
Of course!
These white Birds are planted all along the coast and in the cities of southern California. I've seen them grow on a stalk from old dead leaves and the plant itself gets anywhere from five to ten, maybe fifteen feet tall on very old specimens!

Question: I repotted my BOP 7 days ago. I have two plants in one 12" pot. I used a bunch of Perlite, a generous amount of Charcoal, and little bit of Pumice. It is indoors. The plant is still moist. You mentioned not wanting yours to stay wet over 4 days indoors, but mine is definitely still damp on day 7. I'm trying to figure out if the pot is too big? Or maybe because I keep my A/C on 72° round the clock, daily, and there's not enough humidity? It can't be the mixture because I made sure it's sharp! Is it not okay for it to still be damp this long? Thanks 😬😳
How often do you water it? Mine is indoor as well, has brown spots on the leaves, I water ir every week, I think is too much.
@@michellemagdalena1012 I typically water every 2 weeks. This is with the soil I purchased it in (Home Depot). I've had it a year. I finally decided to repot it, removed 'Home Depot' soil, and gave it a new airy mixture so it will dry out faster but it stays wet. Sometimes going in to week "3". I don't know why mine stays damp so long...

The roots look like carrots. Rather poisonous carrots. That's a set it and forget it plant in the Florida landscape. Well, we do tend to cut down trunks from time to time because looking at 12 feet of bare trunk isn't appealing. But that is really the only "care" they get.

@@TropicalPlantParty not invasive, they will sometimes volunteer, that's how I ended up with one under the oak.
Hi Jeff, so I worked up a ball of courage yesterday, if you get a chance pop over to my channel for my first ever video lol. It’s all of 3 and a half minutes long but it shows the make shift “greenhouse” I threw together. Just recorded it on my iPhone so the video quality is not top notch, you know lighting and all but I haven’t talked myself into deleting it yet so I’m doing good lol 😂
Whew I so want a Bird of Paradise to go with my huge Dumb Cane but obviously need to wait at this point before I go out and get one. But I’m thinking of turning my front room/office/gym(LOL) into a little bit of a tropical room and have individual grow lights for each one. Only because the room itself has no windows, and gets a bit stuffy.

Sounds like a great plan, and having plants in the room will make it much less stuffy. The air will be all scented with smell of foliage! ... and a plants clean the air, that helps a bunch too.
