- Underwater video recorded on world class fluke (flounder) fishing grounds. This is my best and the first time I've captured true doormats hitting a lure with the underwater camera.

I can’t say it enough. The best fishing channel on CZcams. We are incredibly lucky to have you sharing your knowledge with the masses John. Thank you !
Your a class act in the fishing community. Can we call you daddy ? 😆
Skinner your the man I learn a lot from your books and videos thanks for sharing
Nice job !!Kayak karl did this in shinnecock bay 15 years ago trolling a tube and worm. We saw bass and fluke on the camera
I really like your thought out and logical approach to fishing man. Makes sport so much more enjoyable
Thanks John. I’m a 50 yr old guy fishing Sandy Hook NJ but grew up fishing in Long Island as a kid in the 70’s and 80’s. You think you know what’s going on down there sometimes and I’m very surprised to see how hesitant some of the fish are especially the Sea Bass and Porgies. They give the impression that they just slam everything they see. And I never would’ve guessed Fluke would follow behind like that and opt not to strike. I always thought meals were hard to come by down there and they took advantage of that. Thanx again for the great footage...
Thanks for posting the whole thing. I appreciate the long-form because it's where the real information is
More....please, more underwater videos like this. There is so much information in watching these to help being a better fisherman. Thank you for all of your videos.
Yes very interesting video. I learn alot. Thanks for the long hrs of editing and thanks for sharing, John! Good stuff!
I did it! Watched the whole thing. Great stuff John.
Another Great video John , Thanks for all you do. Don’t know how I missed this one ,
John I love your videos, they have been very informative to me, I'm from indiana and hit the east coast twice a year, southern outer banks, emerald isle to be specific, I've tried your technique for the last two years, surf and off shore, the only thing I can say is my catch rate has improved dramatically, especially in some what touristy area, anyway keep the videos coming we all enjoy them, especially those of us who are land locked most of the year
Really appreciate the knowledge you are handing out to us.
Those Saddle Blankets! That was awesome! Thank you for all you do. 🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼
It'd be great to watch this alongside the depth sounder readout.
I'm amazed that y'all don't catch 15 Sea Bass for every fluke given the apparent numbers of Sea Bass.
Really great stuff to watch, Thanks!
Very informative video, thank you John!
Mr. John Skinner your a GOAT. A LEGEND. 💯
I like these types of videos . Nice seeing what’s on the ground floor .
It's like "where's waldo", except for you're looking for fluke! Addictive. Thanks john!
John you are the man!! Thank you!
1:03:31 great shot of fast jigging bucktail and a nice doormat strike
And it's a nice shot of what orange gulp looks like dancing at 85'! That looked like a pretty good fish. Thanks for finding that. I knew it was in there somewhere.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing no problem!!! Ever fish around City Island?
John, your the man! I grew up fishing greenport to orient. Your living out my dreams of "I wonder whats going on behind my bait?" Thanks! See ya at "secret beach"
Skinner . you are killing me ! EDIT ! Good work tough
Really surprised on the color down deep. And all the life down there. would think all the sand sharks would be all over your baits
Another great video John. Your videos have been such a great help to me for the two months that I have been fishing. I have learned so much from you in that short period of time. I finally caught two flukes while fishing on the crossbay north channel bridge in queens last saturday. And it's all because I used the techniques l picked up from your videos. Keep catching doormats and uploading great content.
I'm glad you find the stuff useful.
Awsome video man much love from LI keep em coming
Love your videos man!
Love underwater videos
Thanks for your Videos john,Ive been fluke fishing for 25 years around Misquamicut block island and montauk.Ive had good days and and not so good days and what I have have surmised its all about wind direction and stages of the tide...But I have always wondered how many fish are following or looking at your offerings....These videos are proof that that they are at least looking at them LOL....Good job appreciate your efforts
As always, nice work men.
Love It Skinner
Hey John, cool video. In regards to the color change which is really cool. Maybe you could do a short video to see the color change on different color Bucktails, glups. And possibly at different depths. I think that would be quite interesting to see
Fantastic video....good job.
Can’t wait to catch door mats on my new rod 🤞🏻
Great video as always and thanks for posting. Have you tried to video other colors at that depth? If so was there any significant changes?
Sweet learned a lot
Great stuff wow
I am becoming addicted to your numerous videos in spite of the fact that I haven't fished in many years. It's almost like therapy for me and your steady pleasing voice on every video makes watching enjoyable. A good friend is one of the top fly fisherman around and in season he's always got customers on his boat. I'm sure you've run into him on the water many times. His name is Jeff Palmer. He keeps nothing but is on the water every day providing the wind permits. I'm a Sag Harbor resident.
I use these to teach myself and my marine bio high school classes. Fished a lot as a kid, learn more more fishing than in grad school
Great video, John! I’m wondering if this rig/camera setup could handle a little surf casting... sure would be interesting to see what’s right there in front of those of us who don’t have boats 😎
Great video, it was very informative and interesting 👍. I would like to see more. TY
Great video
It would be great if you could get some under water footage at the race when the outgoing tide is ripping just to see whats stacked up on that underwater mountain.
Check out this bass vid under the montauk light. We had a 3-knot current. It's just too fast and turbulent for good video. czcams.com/video/efZ-29PWdh8/video.html
I used to dive and spearfish a lot and it takes a trained eye to spot their outline and eyes in the sand
WOW THAT WAS COOL
Have to show a video of the camera set up.
Yes a short video of your camera set up would be great. I’ve been trying to get a set up and have not been able to come up with anything that gives me enough steady video and is easy to work with.
Love how the fish behave just chilling by the bucktail like nah not interested
Its really cool when you see the true "knuckle-head" c-bass show up and trail the bait...There knuckle really shows up down there...Calling in the females...;) Good stuff !
It’s really sad/disappointing when there Is such a large swath of area with little to no fish.
It’s nice to see there are still some, however I don’t think it’s as good as it could be.
Essentially there is always room for improvement.
Thank you for sharing your videos. I’m an avid fisherman myself, and really enjoy the ocean fisheries.
This is rather insightful as to life down there, or there lack of in some areas.
1:57 what was that it looks like a tentacle almost
That’s it everyone buy out them teasers and re sell them for 100$ each now
Great video i was hoping you would record some footage of that area good to see what is below i now have a better understanding next time try some thick sliced Bacon , Its true every thing is better with bacon picked up three nice ones last year , would like to see the colors of the other teasers under water if possible
If you have a color sounder tune it down until only rocks have red or orange returns. It makes rocks on sand stand out like a sore thumb.
wow every fishermans dream thinking like a fish
great idea using the camera rather than guessing
How do you feel about tipping the bucktail with a fishbite strip John?
Amazing how many fish are there! How did you rig the camera?
Dude right at 1:58 in the video looks like a gigantic octopus checking the bait out.
What the hell??? It looks as big as the boat!!
Ahhh - the old bow and arrow trick at 20:31? Yes?
And then the porgy scares the fluke lol bad porgy BAD!
Does anyone know of any other long videos like this where fish are following lures?
How are you rigging the camera? I'd love to try this down in jersey to see what's going on at the bottom.
The color change is for us and the camera because of the change on light reaching the bottom but do we have any idea of what the fish see as far as color down there?
thanks john for all your hard work of recording all your videos and sharing.. but if its ok with you i have 2-3 questions to ask you, since im not a fluke fisherman as of yet, but will start this year, for now im gathering info doing research for when i do start..i wanted to ask you if you have tried strip bait on a jig head and or bucktail jigged off the bottom as you do with gulps? ., and not trolling off the bottom, as in this video, wouldn't the results be different...? being that seabass and flukes are opportunistic fishes ..and seeing an injured fish/ or a stripof to attack mode...or you feel that gulps would be superior to strip cut fresh bait... im only asking due to that i saw another fisherman video, where him and hes friend were fishing for flukes initially with the gulps and were not doing good and as soon as they changed adding only strip cut baits to there bucktails it significantly made a difference..one even caught ..hes biggest flounder of 10lbs...what's your take please ..?...thanks
Absolutely we will sometimes tip the jigs and teasers with fluke or searobin strips. These do a good job of standing up well to the interference fish (seabass, porgies). Generally we find the gulp works better, but there have been times that they seemed to prefer the strips.
1st nice video!
is this in montauk? how do you rig the go pro to get this footage? great video!
It snot a go pro.a gopro will barely go to 20 ft
Flounder is so good to eat
I have a problem getting my bucktail to sink to the bottom. Even shallow water I can never seem to feel bottom with it. Do you have any tips? I find from a kayak by the way
Sounds like you need more weight on the jig. Keep an eye on the spool rotating while the offering sinks. The point of contact with the bottom should seem clear by the sudden slowdown in the spool rotating. You want to let your rig freefall to the bottom.
Awesome video, 15:40 a fish comes into frame on left side above rock. Any clue what kind of fish?
I'm pretty sure it's just another porgy, but I had to look at it a few times.
Very cool, always wondered what it looked like down there. So, pink didn't really stand out under water like above water. What color does?
Orange Gulp stood out. (Salmon Red)
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thank you for always answering questions. Appreciate it
Is that an octopus at 1:58 ??
Jaxs Man I think lol
John, Thanks for sharing. What kind of camera are you using? Go Pro on in a canister? Love your videos!
Seems Iike a few of them have been stung before.
They seem interested, until they appear to realize what it is and then turn away.
How did you manage to keep the bucktail so perfectly off the floor?
Lol it does look like a buck tail but that explains it
I have been using this app for months now
John this video tells me the strike zone for fluke may be higher than I thought, which means I don't necessarily have to consistently bounce off bottom. I'm just tired of losing rigs in structure. You concur?
It depends where you thought the strike zone was. I'd like to keep my offering a foot or two off the bottom. It seems the porgies and seabass are much more willing to go higher, but that's not surprising given the fluke is built to lay flat on the bottom.
What is that below the lure at 1:57
How do u keep drifting but keep your bait above the floor when there’s constant elevation changes?
While fishing, you drop down and touch bottom occasionally.
The answer to where's the fish?
When you say pork rind do you mean bacon? Or the chips
is that an octopus @1:59? that was weird!
Bubble trail
Egg sack
It's some type some type of jelly like goop see it all the time near the surface when diving
Looked like salps or a siphonophore...
Why aren't they biting it more often?
Color wave lengths, the same reason the sky is blue
I thought I saw a giant octopus at 1:57
Lonely Star* holy shit you might be right! Nice catch!
Had to be. I saw it too, before I saw your post
What camera is he using?
Would you suggest the quantum reel as a pretty good all around starter reel ?
Yes. It holds up well as long as you rinse it in freshwater after each trip.
Thanks John- we haven’t fished in many years and would like to purchase a reasonable flounder set up for dock and waters edge.
The button release for casting without too much bird nesting caught my eye.
Starting simply would equal more fun my intentions anyway. We enjoy your video and are subscribers. Have you done any fishing in St Simons sound?
Would like to see those as that is our targeted location to get back into the sport.
Friends in GA
@@georgiob3430 The last video I posted flats wading has gear for that, with links to the gear in the video description. I have not fished down there.
John thanks, watching your videos makes me want to get to the water.
I live in Atlanta 5 plus hrs to get to shore.
Grew up on LI
GEORGE in GA
Where
At 1:58 there's something under the bait.. octopus maybe or squid of some kind wow
I saw that too. Not sure what it was.
Do you this correlated with halibut fishing?
I'm told this works well on California Halibut.
What are the hooks attached to your swing hook bucktails called
VMC
John Skinner Fishing like the Style of hook because I want to replace a couple of mine
How deep was this?
80'
7.5-8lb fluke?!? God damn that sucker must have been like 29-30”!!!
More like 27''.
Pork rind? Left over? I thought Uncle Josh stopped marketing pork rind.
John as you know i call you the pope of Long Island fishing , quick question, these bucktails don't look like anything resembling a bait fish no flutter no motion at all , wonder why the fluke fall for this poor motion of a bait .
I think they look like a lot of things that glide and dart near the bottom.
Why don't the sea bass go after that thing?
I should be talking about fishing - but instead - what is with the green color of the water? That is not normal. I wonder what causes it. I've seen blue, red, brown, grey, but never antifreeze green in the North Atlantic. Not in 35 years of fishing.
Are u using a 2 or 3oz weight?
This was for video only. We normally jig 3-4-ounce bucktails.
Follow the bouncing bucktail.... 👍🤪
Hey I have an extra gallon of Sears weatherbeater. Let's pop the lid and see what happens...............lol.
A lot of fish and not many strikes.. wonder why
where is this?
