  • Disneyland's Indiana Jones Adventure Attraction features projection mapping that many Disney Fans consider to be sub-par. However, what defines a good implementation of projection mapping compared to a bad one? With the whole Theme Park Industry slowly moving towards adopting more of the technology, what makes the Indiana Jones Adventure Attraction at Disneyland in California so bad?

    Clever and well executed projection mapping can add flair and excitement to an attraction, but (imo) it should never be a replacement for practical effects. The original Chamber of Destiny was the single greatest magic trick in any amusement park in the world, and now it's just three neon blue doors. It doesn't even make sense anymore. The Mara statue didn't need to open its eyes. It's a statue. The voice we hear is Mara's spirit.

  • @WheezyLiam

    I think this is a problem that runs much deeper than just the Indy ride. There's not much in the way of subtlety in the parks anymore; too much focus on making every single part of the attractions the star of the show, rather than thinking about how those pieces might fit in to a bigger picture. I mean, the magic is supposed to be *behind* the chamber doors! Why are they so bright and animated before we even enter??

      As easy is it is to blame just the company at least half the blame can be placed directly at the vast majority of park goer’s feet. I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard people complain before updates like this old rides were boring because there was “Only one cool thing in the entire ride”. People demand bombastic, sensor overwhelming schlock and if that’s where the money is at Disney will adjust towards it

    the rotating doors can be easily fixed AND combined with the rpojection mapping... the essentially only need to move te walls and not the door frames. Hiding two extra mock doors to the left and right (making a total of 5 doors), the moving walls would either hide the left door or the right door (depending on the position of the walls). So instead of having to move the slightly more complex door frames, those stay fully in place. Adjust the projection mapping to be less flashy, but still unique to the "choice" of the riders, the entire scene could benefit greatly from both techniques. And panning a just wall is much less prone to failure than the original "cone" they had to move in to position quickly.

      @AlextheHistorian Před rokem +14

      What you just described IS how the rotating door scene worked. Only the walls of the room moved, there was only 1 functioning door mechanism and it always stayed in place, with two stationary dummy doors on either side of it. it was exactly as you described.

    • @TrojTV
      @TrojTV Před rokem +3

      @@AlextheHistorian if you look in this video, you can see the door frames moved with the walls, it's literally in the video. The only thing that stayed in one place, was the actual door and mock doors. The whole moving part was a pretty "complex" hanging construction to keep up in maintenance because of this.

    • @AlextheHistorian
      @AlextheHistorian Před rokem +5

      @@TrojTV yes I know how it works, but it wasn't the whole door frame that moved, just the tops of the frame, which is necessary for making the moving walls more rigid. I'd argue that not having that upper frame there would make the engineering of the moving walls more complicated than it needs to be

    Here's hoping when they refurb the temple......again...... they can update the effects not only the mapping but the doors opening behind Indy. the ceiling collapse. The roaches. The lava mist. Fluffy. And for the love of God please update the budget room with the rats! However, do it 100 but Subtle enough to plus up the attraction.

    I honestly love both versions. I really wish they still had the rotating doors effect. I agree with your points on the original having a more dark atmosphere than the more bright one we have today. I think to balance to it out, the door scene could be dimly lit like the original still giving that suspensful vibe you were talking about. I personally love the way the hall of mara is, it has so much life to it. I would say find a way to still make it dark but also have life to it without brightening up the scenes

    Hi there, just found this channel and want to say thank you for expressing the issues I have with some of these ride updates, and boy do I always point out a ton when I go to the park these days. Maybe someday you can look into what I call "the dark room issue." I swear, after a lot of the rides at Disneyland received updates they are way, WAY darker than they used to be. The one I point out first is the seance room in Haunted Mansion. The floating items used to be SO CLEAR, and whenever she would call out for an instrument it would get brighter as the sound effect for it played. This doesnt happen anymore, and you can barely make out what's floating in the air anymore. Most dark scenes in the park are barely visible now and when I point this out to others, they say "Your eyes just aren't adjusted to the dark" or "It's always been that dark." My eyes are plenty adjusted after being in the dark queue of Haunted Mansion for half an hour. There also isn't anything wrong with my vision lol. The other example I think of immediately is Space Mountain. Never mind the horrible replacement projection of Star Wars they are currently using, but it's way darker in there too. The stars used to be BRIGHT, like so bright you could occasionally make out some of the scaffolding inside the mountain when the light passed over it. I hope you keep making videos, I see it's been almost a year since you uploaded but I think its important to bring attention to this stuff and hopefully let the morons currently in charge of the upkeep of Disneyland know how we all feel. Theres a lot of broken and poorly "fixed" effects to talk about all over the park. I think a big video about the current state of Tomorrowland as a whole would be cool. It's such a cluster f**k of broken rides and empty spaces like the arcade, people mover and Innovations. Like i said ive got a lot of opinions about Disneyland and I've been looking for a good channel that talks about them in depth. Please keep making videos!!

    Here's what I see in the future (I went into the chamber future) eventually Disney is going to cave in and have to fix these issues, because social media is getting big all these channels on history on Disneyland rides effects and how they been shut down are getting popular. I mean even the general public is starting to notice this stuff l, heck even the public starting memeing stuff like when splash mountain constant log sinking was happening. If the 6 months is only to install the new snake (fluffy) head I really lost hope for them. You would think with the new movie coming soon they would take almost a year off to get the ride in amazing condition.

    It’s like they’re afraid to let the sets, props, and lighting speak for themselves and just give the atmosphere time to breathe. Giving everything animation makes everything one note and bland. It’s over stimulating and takes focus away from what the rider is supposed to find important

    I love both, but the mapping projections are actually based on an original idea when the ride was being made. And you need to carefully analyze the details because the details are wonderfully done! It may look cheap but there are a lot of details. Only will you see them in person. Videos won't do them justice.

    Subtle projection mapping looks good, but extensive projection mapping looks terrible. It cheapens the experience. The Alice in Wonderland ride overuses projection mapping. The two dimensional animated scenes are in conflict with the three dimensional models. You notice the artificiality immediately and are thus thrust out of the failed experience.
    I remember being in Disney Land on one of the newish rides and being interviewed by one of the staff on what I thought. My basic review was this ride is terrible, you tried too hard to accomplish too little. I didn't wait in line for an hour to sit in a chair and do what amounted to watching a bunch of short aimless clips. I could have done that at home for pennies.

  • @Clay3613
    @Clay3613 Před rokem

    Disagree, I think you're nitpicking about the old moving corridor no longer working. The projection mapping is really good on the doors because the banner/header above them are now mostly blank, but the projection make it look carved.
    The Hall Of Promise could be dialed back a bit though.

    I don’t think you understand the Indians jones have MANY moving parts and they are broken, which is why Disney has tried to make up for it. The ride is going for a refurbishment soon. Disney did not take the show elements out , they broke.

    • @ChriswithaK
      @ChriswithaK  Před rokem +2

      The previous video I made detailed a majority of the broken things in the ride. I understand why most effects broke in the ride. Many of the effects in the ride unfortunately were deactivated or just neglected by Disney, most of which they just left there with no replacement.
      However, no time in the video did I claim that Disney took show elements out. I dont think you understood the point of this video if you came to that conclusion.
