  • Indiana Jones Adventure has seen a massive decrease in quality ever since it opened in 1995. Effects and show scenes that were once crucial to the ride have either been neglected or completely forgotten about. With a large 3 -5 month refurbishment coming to the Indiana Jones Attraction on January 9th, let's breakdown all the effects that need repairing and see what exactly Disney will need to fix in order to bring this attraction back to it's original state. I'm friends with someone who works at indy and here is what I know from this list.
    The bamboo pole in the queue was installed a few days ago and is working again.
    The gates of doom behind indy were changed by WDI and are unable to be changed back without authorization.
    The ice machine caused mold, rust, and various other issues and will not be brought back.
    The bridge ropes were very high maintenance and have been down for a few years for redesign. They should be brought back soon.
    Fluffy(the snake) was removed in November of 2021 due to various design issues and will be reinstalled during the refurbishment in 2 weeks. There were a lot of issues with manufacturing parts for the figure that caused the time delay.
    The lava pit effect was a fine water mist and it created tons of mold and was dangerous for the cast members. It is currently down for redesign.
    The audio issues in the dart room has been an issue for a while and they're currently looking to implement new systems for it.
    The rolling ball and moving room has been having a ton of issues. The moving room has been off for a few years now but is now starting to work again as of 2 weeks ago. The only issue is it faults out a lot during the day due to a new control system in place. The same can be said about the rolling ball. However the ball was only off for a few weeks about a month ago.
    Just to note, there have been a lot of people saying this complaint, "disneyland was closed for a long time during the covid pandemic and the maintenance crews had a lot of time to get everything working properly"
    The issue with this statement was that all maintenance crews for the park were furloughed for the majority of covid. There was no one at the parks because disneyland was not deemed an essential business because it was entertainment only. So basically everything was shut off for a very long period of time and the cast members only had a short amount of time to get everything ready for reopening. Machinery and systems do not like to work after being shut down for long periods of time. Especially when it runs 16-17 hours a day, 7 days a week. Just remember that

The line experience is still super cool but that repetitive safety video is quite annoying.

  • @Vasooki
    @Vasooki Před rokem +385

    Some insight from someone who worked at the park, and best friend currently works Indy/Trains/Jungle/Tiki:
    -generator in the queue is because the entire thing (jeep from the movie, generator, etc.) is all rusted out and filled with spiders. Speed was never reduced, that's just what it does now
    -Missing news reel is because of covid; they wanted to keep people moving as fast as possible through the indoor queues, so they cut out the other reels to keep guests moving, as they don't have to watch the entire reel, only the relevant safety info, per policy
    -wall of mirrors/chamber of destiny was due to seismic damage on the building. The mechanism that allows the room to rotate around the false doors, giving the illusion of different chambers deattached from the "inner" room (the rotating part), and cannot be repaired without removing substantial portions of the building, original themeing, etc. The wall of mirrors changed position to draw less attention to the broken effect. This wasn't the case of poor maintenance, but the unfortunate frequent seismic activity of socal (Believe me, I want this fixed as much as everyone else, but it's about as likely as the yeti)
    -the ice machine caused so much leaking and rotting and mold issues, you don't want it back I promise
    -Fair point on the door slamming effect, I'd like to see that make a return
    -I've heard rumors that the bridge effect is a known issue, they can't fix it due to safety concerns/lack of adequate fall protection for the cast that would have to fix it
    -Fluffy is old (the snake) be nice to her :'( In all seriousness though, yeah, she's notorious with the CMs. She's not completely inoperable, but she went down enough that until she's fixed, she'll be static. The closure wasn't kind to her. (Fun fact, you can hear her from the CM bathroom, since it's right underneath the snake)
    -I think the lava smoke effects were less from a fog machine, and more from the vastly larger fire effects that used to be there. I think they were removed for guest comfort/energy consumption concerns
    -I don't even have to watch the part about the rat room to know whatever you say is fair criticism, that shit sucks
    -Same with the boulder effect.
    -Hey, one time I heard Sallah say something other "if you drank too much from the fountain of youth, we will be happy to assist you with strollers", and it was post-covid too!
    Keep in mind, this ride runs on Windows 95, haha. They're doing their best. You're not wrong about any of this, btw, I just thought I'd give some insight as to why some of the things are the way they are

      @ChriswithaK  Před rokem +94

      Its always good to hear more insight, the best way to learn is to keep an open mind. I was presenting information I gathered from Disney Fans and retired maintenance crew on Indiana Jones so it would be near impossible for me to be specific with information while also getting everything correct.
      This video was more of a documentation of things that are broken, not so much of a call to action for Disney to fix it. I understand that most of the things in the videos are either near impossible to bring back or were operational nightmares to deal with.

Remember when they gave out paper cards to translate the coded inscriptions on the walls? Long before there was a Disney Play app, my mom took notes on a yellow legal pad while we waited in the queue to try to translate everything. As a child I was terrified of skeletons so I did not do well on that ride for a number of years. My poor dad had to wait outside with me by the ride exit where we would heckle the Jungle Cruise. In its original form, sure I can see that, maybe, in it's current state I'd even take Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway over it. I'll take Forbidden Journey over Indy, even Spiderman at Islands of Adventure. Oh, Radiator Springs Racers, Tower of Terror, our Tower in FL, not the other one that closed. Indy needs help taking it's crown back. Technology has moved past it unfortunately and there are better dark rides out there now. If it could be restored then yes I'd say Rise of The Resistance isn't even quite on the same level, only just though. This means with the original motion programming on Indy as well, cos that really tied it all together and set it apart from the others. For the rotating doors I remember seeing a video of a cast member talking about how the parts they need to fix it are no longer available or cost to much to get that's why they never went back to it but to be honest I like the projection doors more. As for the snake this one annoys me! The main reason the snake slowed down wasn't because of age it was because people complained it was to scary so Disney gave in and made him slower to where he no longer jumped out at you. I was there when this opened back in the 90s. The most disappointing thing is Harrison Ford declining to do the voice for the ride (counter - awesome that Sallah is there!). Kind of lame on his part (maybe they can get him to do it for the refresh). Part of the line experience for me was translated the hieroglyphics with decoder cards (I used to have all of the different versions, lost them at some point, grr). It was very cool. But that ended when they split the line for fast passes. The last time I was there 7-yrs ago, you breezed through the beginning part of the temple, so you don't really have a chance to take in the surroundings. One time back in the 90s, I stayed in the line for over 3-hours translating everything, and I made a temple diary with everything in it. Later a buddy and I would dress up as explorers and act as tour guides for the folks around us in line. The best part was the poll holding up the ceiling, I'd tell everyone not to touch it, then would "by accident" and my buddy and I would pretend to struggle with it to prop the ceiling back up. It was great fun. Those were the days for sure...

    • @bgolus
      @bgolus Před rokem +2

      The supposed story behind Ford's absence from the rider is he agreed to record his voice for it on the condition he didn't have to read or do anything that'd be used only for advertising the ride / park. Disney agreed to this, but there was a mix-up and, depending on which version of the story you read, he was sent either scripts for both the ride and ads, or only the scripts for the ads. He was so angry about this he refused to do it at all.
      However, one thing that you might find interesting, while John Rhys-Davies is obviously in the film footage, he's _not_ been credited with voicing the ride. A voice actor named Bob Joles is officially credited with voicing Sallah for the ride. I'm not sure if anyone knows if all of the voice work is done by Joles, or if Rhys-Davies did some and Joles did the rest. It's surprisingly common for voice impersonators to do voice work even on movies if lines need to be re-recorded. For example Jim Hanks, Tom Hanks' brother, will often do the ADR or non-movie voice work for characters he plays. And supposedly Dan Castellaneta (of Homer Simpson fame) did some ADR for Robin Williams after Williams was impressed by Castellaneta's impersonation of him as the Genie for the second Aladdin movie (which Williams refused to voice as he had just sued Disney for using his voice in advertising the first movie, a suit which he won).

    I rode this just after the first year of its opening and was duly awed by the attention to detail, all the little Easter eggs (I still have an original decoder card for the hieroglyphics on the queue walls), and the sheer complexity of the attraction. It is sad to think that no one thought far enough ahead in the attraction's future as to the maintenance required to maintain its A+ status as an experience. I realize that much of what is contained in the ride is custom manufactured and that there probably AREN’T any spare parts. But anticipation of potential problems (the Disney way of running things) versus only profit (the Chapek way of running things) is what sets apart the old Disney attractions from the new ones. As an example: Alice Davis, Marc Davis's wife, had a background in theatre and was in charge of the costuming for Pirates of the Caribbean. Many professional theatre groups will construct duplicates of each costume for long-running productions so that when one costume fails, it can be sent to the costume shop for repairs while its duplicate is pressed into service for the next performance and the audience is none the wiser. Davis ordered extra fabric and made duplicate costumes for PotC like the true professional she was (and unbeknownst to management.) Shortly after the ride opened, there was a real fire in the burning seaport setting and many of the costumes were damaged. A very anxious executive asked Alice how soon the animatronics could be re-clothed and she replied "as soon as you like," and explained how that was possible. She also said the executive didn't know whether to reprimand her for concealing the extra expense and effort, or to hug her for having the foresight to head off near disaster. Disney spent soooooo much on Indiana Jones. I pray the bean counters allow any and all repairs to bring it back to its fully operational "A mode." So many artisans, designers, engineers, and creative people worked on it. Give their work its due and invest in a legacy of putting it right instead of the attitude of "we’ll maintain the minimum to keep it running.”

    I was surprised at how short the queue segment of the vid was. I worked on parades for Disney (Aladdin) at the time IJA opened. We were given access to a private pre-opening premier of the ride and I still have the decoder card they handed out to decode all the messages on the wall. Anyway, pretty much everything has been toned down or disabled. One of my favorite parts of the queue was the collapsing ceiling with the spikes. That initial BOOM was super loud and startled you as you shook the bamboo brace...and the ceiling would come down to around 7' or so...not so much anymore as it doesn't even work. The airbursts were much more "punchy" and the ride overall was just a completely different experience. I'm glad I got to see it like it was intended, but dang! You forgot to point out one issue that I have had a problem with for almost 20 years now. At the end of the right, you get a message from Salah to remain seated. Originally, the message he gave you was different depending on which room you went through at the beginning of the ride. However, nowadays, the only message they ever play is the message he is supposed to say when you enter the room of Timeless Youth. I really think they need to fix that and bring it back to its original state.

    • @ChriswithaK
      @ChriswithaK  Před rokem +5

      As I stated in the video, only about 60% of all the issues of the ride were brought up. The problem with Salah (and also indy) not giving the right dialogue is due to the LCU I brought up in the video. Indiana Jones used to give different audio when guests approached the snake, the one that never plays anymore is "Watch out for anything that slithers". Those two audio effects were "lost" sometime between 2012-2015, not 20 years ago. This is why I encouraged viewers to watch the video on the broken LCU in the video since it covers that as well as a multitude of other issues with audio on the ride.

    So I actually got to ride Indy for the first time in 2018 and the news reels were there. Took my brother post-covid when the Sallah speech was all that was left, but I didn’t mind that one so much mostly because the unique and particular speech patterns burned into our brain and became an in-joke. I actually made a t-shirt on Redbubble with the speech text in the Indy font and he’s getting it for Christmas!
    I haven’t been since July so I my particular issues may be resolved (doubt it lmao) but this thing was RAGGEDY when I went. I was at Disneyland for a 5 day trip. On the first day I went on it and I managed to get in line and get on in between LENGTHY downtimes. Several of the moving parts of the ride didn’t move, as you outline and everyone knows. But the kicker was the ride timing being off; we’d make it through the blow dart tunnel and the issue became obvious. You’d head towards the boulder or whatever’s next normally and wouldn’t notice doing nearly a u-turn in a pitch black room to get there, but something was off EVERY TIME I rode it and as soon as you hit the end of the blow dart room you’d be stopped and frozen. The engine noises and music continued for a second, then the music would stop and you’d have just the engine noises and be in pitch darkness. After 30-60 seconds in silence with kids freaking increasingly out, all of a sudden the music would kick back in and the car would jerk to life and continue the ride. One time it must’ve missed something else though because we didn’t get the boulder either.

I agree with you that all of that just doesn’t work with this ride because it was much more effective when it was really really dark. The effects don’t work as well when you can see everything that’s happening. Well, the main issue with indy is actually Rise of the Resistance. The park has a limited maintenance budget and every time a new ride comes along it slashes the maintenance budget for all the rides in the resort. Rise, from what I understand, takes a huge chunk of the maintenance since there are so many unnecessary moving parts in the ride. Additionally, Under Chapeck, the maintenance budget was reduced even rather for all attractions. This is why Indiana Jones is in the current state it’s in.

    I rode this the year it opened. It was brilliant, best amusement ride I've ever been on up the that time. I got to ride in the driver's seat and forgot there were 11 other people in the vehicle with me. I WAS SAVING INDY.
    I also loved the cards we were given while waiting in line, to use to decipher the writing on the walls along the entrance, but didn't have time to decipher the codes because the line moved quickly. After the ride, while exiting, you see they were all AT&T ads :/

    Even the park cleanliness in general. It’s disgusting. I’ve been frequenting Universal Studios, Orlando way more than Disney. It’s easier to deal with crowds, it’s clean and I can actually get on more than 2 rides per day.

    I remember when this ride first opened. You were given a card with a code to crack all the writing on the walls. Gave you something to do in the 3 hour wait. I feel like not a lot of people remember this.

    (Which was really really cool while it worked).

    I've never actually been on this ride. I've only been to Disneyland twice in my life. When I went as a kid it didn't exist, and when I went as a teen ten years later it was down for maintenance. I'm going to Japan in March, and I hope to hit Tokyo Disney while I'm there. Fingers crossed I guess lol

    Laurie Spira was HR day of launch and there was some employee related matter that she had to fix on this ride at 3:30am day of debut. Her boss, as thanks, got her dinner at "33" and exploited a lapse in her bosses judgement to impulsively peek out the hatch above the basket ball court within the Matterhorn. Laurie was a boss of mine at a finance company.

    I went on the Indiana Jones ride in California with my dad the first year it opened. We went on a rainy weekday, so there would be no lines. We must have ridden it four or five times in a row. I remember being impressed by how different it was each time. Though back then, it wasn't a "bug room," it was a "blow dart room" if I remember correctly, or I guess I just don't remember the "bug room."

    some context as to why it could be worse after the closing. rides are made to move constantly, while yes this will eventually break things it is made to move. when a ride is shut down for a long time and not used, it gets used to it. when it is suddenly turned back on and moving how it was supposed to before it is not used to it anymore. you can really see this with the snake, the way it was bent down makes me thing it was like that for a year or so and got used to being that low and just staying there, not moving.

      i realized that this could be confusing so im going to give more info. During lockdown the moving axels could have rusted or just broken down. She is also a very old snake and i have heard from my friends who work their that she was always breaking down barley moving before covid . One of the said that on days she worked they would let the ride go multiply times before opening to have her(and the rest of the effects but mostly for the snake, Indiana, and the moving bolder scene) warm up and get ready to move before guests rode the ride

    During the last time I went on the ride a few weeks ago(and even a couple more times before) the mice effect didn’t activate and it was pitch black.
    Oh and when in the loading area after the ride finished, we could here some of the audio clips from inside the ride. Such as “look into my eyes” and some of indie saying “why does it have to be snakes”

    I was at Disneyland one time for one day in the mid 1990s, and this attraction was still a few months away from opening. I was crestfallen. I didn't have another opportunity to be in the same hemisphere as this attraction until 2018, when I experienced it at Tokyo DisneySea.....even though it was in a language with which I am unfamiliar, I am SO glad I got to see the one kept up by the Oriental Land Company....which does an excellent job of doing what the Walt Disney Company used to do.

    My friends and I rode the attraction in July of last year. Man, I have never seen so much bust in a ride in a long time. Also, that issue you mentioned about the queue with Sallah. My god, the cuts on that video was done so poorly that when it looped over and over again. You wanted to tear your ears out. It never used to be that way and besides why fix what isn't broken...

    I rode it a few weeks ago and it broke down once while I was in line, and it stopped right before the bridge. And then the audio in the arrow part didn’t play. And then when the bolder was chasing the music stopped. It wasn’t very fun. That was the first time it has ever happened for me

    It's crazy how hard the Disney parks have fallen off ESPECIALLY since the pandemic. Went with my family to Disney World last summer and it was honestly the most miserable theme park experience I've ever had. Reduced capacity didn't even alleviate the lack of fastpass as wait times were still extremely high, not to mention that most of the rides were barely functioning and missing a lot of effects or were straight-up closed. It felt like a shell of its former self, even compared to when we last went in 2016.

  • @SalemLD
    @SalemLD Před rokem +1

    The rodents projection before the dart room isn't as impressive as the stone face that blows a fireball towards you at the TDS version of Indiana Jones. Another thing is that their snake isn't as impressive as ours was. But with the news that Disneyland will finally be bringing in the new (or repaired) snake animatronic, It'll really great to see it back in action once the attraction reopens sometime in the Spring. Which hopefully will mean the same for a handful of the other effects that were missing for a while.
