  • Let Robert Harrington show you how to assemble a simple location strobe lighting kit during this interactive presentation. He also demonstrates creative lighting, exposure metering for creative effect, simple portraiture, the reflector, over and under beauty light, and a few more simple one light setups. He also covers posing, developing subject rapport, and getting the shot out of a reluctant client.

Very genuine presenter. I enjoy Bob as he is a real working photog. in NYC. His approach to DOLLARS is what we all need to take away from this presentation. Buy what you need and can afford and work up from there. The trouble with so many of the sponsored presenters and is that they will show equipment that virtually no one can afford much less themselves as the are provided with it. I really respect the fact that he is demonstrating the use of equipment that he saved for and bought himself... used. Bravo. I personally have a studio full of equipment that I bought used and serves me well. As for some of the comments. No, a light moved further away from a subject doesn't become softer but I don't think that he really meant that. His point was that a beauty dish, used outside as a fill, CAN BE very effective as a softer-than-a-speedlite lightsouce that won't catch wind and blow over. And since the light is not the only lightsource on the subject it will appear natural when used as he did it.

+BxSQUIRREL When shooting in RAW it is possible to use custom, manual or auto white balance features in your camera. And with RAW you also have the option to white balance in post processing if you prefer. - Yossi

Do you have to set white balance even if you shoot in raw format?

Wow, the part when he says beauty dishes work opposite than softboxes, the further away the beauty dish, the softer the light is..... epic...

WHAT ARE YOU USING TO ON YOUR CAMERA TO YOUR COMPUTER WELL SHOOTING, AND WHAT SOFTWARE, SO your images show up on the laptop with every shot? You say you don’t use light room,

When I shoot a headshot I simply shoot a bit wider then I need to so I can easily crop later. Honestly there is no reason to have a 50 mega-pixel camera to shoot controlled headshots. It's cool, but not necessary. I'll put my 5dIV up against a 50k HB anyday of the week and I guarantee nobody could tell the difference.

why would you buy such a costly power batery pack? I use a cheap 300 watt inverter, and a small 7.8 amp hour gell batery that go in fish finder or emergancy lighting, it's 3W X 6"L x 3,5" H. all for under $100.00. that we sell, the one I have been using it for over 5 years, still same batery. for my portable flash that I used on my camera I bought a power pack for it, recargable PermaPak dystem 6 and that whole battery pack with the charger, top control mod for 379.00, now can't find newbattery

1:20:30, how can you endorse that people not do cold calling? There are people who are very successful because they do exactly that. Just because you don't have that skill doesn't mean that you should advise that others avoid it. I have done it and it works. If you know ahead of time that the person you are contacting can be your client, then you are ahead. For the most part, I like your presentation Robert, but your marketing skills need upgrading.

Great presentation but those questions should have been held until the end. Great speaker but drifted too many times off of subject. I like that he repeats what the inaudible audience asks.
Wished he would have done more strobe work than 15 minutes. I'm sure no one there walked away knowing how to use a strobe.

I was very disappointed in this video. Seemed like nothing more than a Q & A with Robert. Would of like to of seen more shooting and actually lighting than I would people asking tons of Questions.

I know this is 12 year old video, but I've seen this for the first time, and I'm sorry to say this, but the family shots with the beauty dish look so over exposed, the faces look to blown out, unless this is his style.

not worth watching because Robert Harrington spent 90% of his time having conversations with folks in the class room who seemed bent on schmoozing... and not allowing teaching to take place.
