We like to train our clients on how to update their websites once we finish a project. At this moment there is no way we would hand off a FSE build and try to train a client on how to use it.

Installed Ollie. Love Mike his work. Spent 30 minutes playing around and was beyond frustrated (again) with the UI/UX. I just can't get wrap my head around the logic of anything in FSE. Spent 45 minutes on trying to get the Page Title to be hidden. I still have not figured it out.. Any tips are welcome :D
The patterns look fantastic, the concept of FSE is a good idea in theory. I don't want to take away any of the hard work people like Mike are doing to make this thing work. But there's never been a page/site builder in my 15 years of full-time WP development that has frustrated me more than spending any time in GB/FSE. I just don't understand any of the UI/UX decisions and there is absolutely zero flow to be found. I feel like how my parents use their SmartTV. Completely lost and praying that eventually I end up where I want to be.
I'll keep checking in with FSE, I want this thing to work. But to me it's just been a very tedious and frustrating tool.

For those trying to figure this out, there is a page template called No Page Title that can be applied. In the editor sidebar on the right, click the Post tab and select the template from the Template link. This will let you hide the page title and build pages with patterns. 👍

I teach Wordpress to a diverse demograhic of students, mainly so they can build their own portfolio.
Suddenly some of them installed themes with the FSE.... so now i will HAVE to get up to speed. PLayed around with Twenty TwentyTwo... Man, that is complicated!! I have been in development and UI design for 20 years, and this is rather clunky.
Still hoping to find good tuts that are more up to date. Lot's is changing in the past months.
    Gonna watch your vid now.

I don’t hate Gutenberg, but since I discovered Bricks Builder and it's flexibility, FSE just looks cumbersome and limited. Dynamic data support is definitely a requirement, but core Gutenberg doesn’t support custom post types, etc. I’ll stick with Bricks.

I've tried some other pagebuilders and plugins for WordPress but nothing gives the customization and advanced options like Elementor and Crocoblock plugins. I understand why people might like to use these other plugins but none of them are even slightly close to Elementor in combination with Crocoblock. This sort of stuff is fine for very simple websites with just a few informative pages and a contact page (maybe a blog) but if you want to offer a client possibilities to add or change custom content from the frontend or manage bookings/ contact forms / accounts this is not even a possibility.

For the global settings thing I think that you go into the style book (the little eye icon, visible in the 9 to 10 minute section of your video) totally obscure place to put it and then you change things globally on the sheet, but there is a whole thing about changing the style of the theme or changing the style locally. Export your changes to update your theme (see three dots menu same area). I think. As I said, I'm learning.

  • @createscapedesignstudio8178

Thanks for the video. I've been using Elementor and I find that it's more user friendly for my clients. I still feel that the FSE is a bit limited. (Personally I prefer Advanced Custom Fields and custom development but my clients like drag and drop.)

I'm using it on something now, because the site needs to be easy for users to maintain and requires no custom posts/taxonomies/code but does require multiple page templates. The template editor may be relatively complicated but it's only a little more knowledge than is needed for the page editor. I could easily get used to this.

The day I can create great looking, responsive and accessible headers and footers quicker with FSE, sure. Crafting solid menu functionality with live search, off canvas menus and other fancy stuff, is no easy task, and some "classic" theme developers have refined their products for years. So keeping an eye on FSE, but I'm yet to find that "killer application" to be honest.
Will take Ollie for a spin, though. Might find a nice pattern I can copy. That's a pretty neat feature of Gutenberg, that we can copy and paste groups between sites and themes, as long they are built with core blocks.

From the Page\All Page\Edit and select edit for the Contact Us page, I will go to the plain edit page by WP, not the visual editor page like in the Front Page. When I preview the Contact Us page, it's ok. But when I click on the top menu "Edit Page," then I go to the plain edit page by WP again. But if I click on the top menu "Edit Site" then I will always go to the visual editor of the "Front Page," not to the Contact Us page.

I'm a big fan of Gutenberg. New block themes as Ollie are indeed a milestone in the Gutenberg evolution. However (and there is a big However), even with a good block theme, there still crucial missing parts in Gutenberg for average webdesign needs: lack of negative margins, z-index, positions, advanced background mamanagement, icons support.... Sure, there is some progress with the intrinsic design philosophy but there is still missing pieces for responsive, specialy the responsive menu part, ordering the blocks in mobile, etc. And I don't even speak of CPT or animations.
It seems that the Gutenberg staff is working more on the technical Gutenberg foundations rather than giving us this basics layout tools (for example they currently work on Interactvity API). I can understand this priority.
Some people could say you have to keep core Gutenberg simple. I'm ok but for example in the world of mobile domination the Gutenberg actual features are clearly not enough. And sure you can use CSS too for layout but you loose the block concept and relatively ease of use.
The only solution right now is using commercial blocks library. Among them, personaly I like MaxiBlocks (very good free solution), Spectra (a good average one), GreenShift (top advanced animations) and Cwicly (great advanced toolbox) because they are very close to Gutenberg and block themes (unlike GenerateBlocks or Kadence which use proprietary themes). But because Gutenberg still lacks a lot of features, this libraries must use their own avanced blocks instead of the Gutenberg blocks and so you are stuck with their solution.
Perhaps it will take one or two years more before we will see professional layout tools in Gutenberg. CSS grid is coming and there discussion about the best way to deal with negative margins or conditional features. And perhaps we will have a better UI too, who knows...

As a webdeveloper creating custom sites for clients i think the full site editor is not yet mature enough to introduce to my clients. i find it very confusing to access it through a "backdoor" like Appearance > Editor. I mean why cannot just footer and header blocks be added at the top and the bottom when you click on pages and select a certain page for edit in the normal wp page structure. Now there are two separate menu structures and Ui:s baked into one. I also would like to have an easy option to turn on andoff certain costumize options since my clients shouldnt have the option to adjust font type, font sizes, colors etc since these are fixed according to the design and brand manuals etc.

In theory FSE sounds good. However, the permanent change of interfaces and how a user has to interact is completely confusing. That is the main reason I've given up on FSE for now. It is like Gutenberg around the year 2018/2019: FSE just needs at least 1-3 more years to mature and to find its sweet spot. What I don't like is the typical WP Theme/Core Dev attitude: we know what is best and only we know how it should be done.
On the other hand, page builders like Bricks -- in practice it is just another "FSE", or at least an alternative FSE, if you want -- try to find out together with its customers & users what is the best way how such an interface should look and work. At least, that is my feeling and experience.
Gutenberg itself as the block editor thing has incorporated a lot of workflows and details from other page builders. This is truth. Period. However, the WP devs name it differently and modify it a bit, because they think they know better....!
Verdict: FSE is just not ready for prime time yet.

    • @WPTuts
      @WPTuts  Před rokem +1

The more I delve into it and start using it, the more I come to realise that it is an inconsistent mess of changes that don't need to be made. As I've said on many occasions, Gutenberg and FSE feels like a 'design by committee' project where no one actually talks to each other and all that we end up with is an inconsistent mess that fluctuates from month to month as 'improvements' and 'features' are shoehorned into it.

Converted to FSE about a year ago - never looked back. What is not to like? Flexible, fast, adaptable, fully compatible with latest WP - PERFECT. Like I would always say to folk these days - stick with NATIVE WP as much as possible and you will save hours (days? Years?) of heartache trying to fix things that just do not work with page builders.
Basically EVERYONE (YEP! EVERYONE) uses the SAME OLD BORING LAYOUTS. So go on, make your life EASY! Stick to FSE and templates and blocks. You can layout a page in seconds then throw it back to the customers and say "hey, here's the layouts with dummy text - NOW YOU provide me the content".... Wait about 6 months for the content to arrive and then plugin in. JOB DONE 😃
Look life in the web design world will be changing dramatically in the next 6 months with AI taking over not only the web design AND the content but the dynamic generation of the content and images as well. WHY waste time...? "Oh, because MY customer wants a PERSONAL design... LOL LOL LOL. NO THEY DON'T. You show them a layout and they say (9 out of 10 times) - "Oooo that's nice" ... "what do you need now..." - that's when you say CONTENT. Oh, sorry that's what you used to say LOLOLOLOL. NOW you say "No problem, I'll generate your content as well with AI - just sit back and relaaaaaaaax"
HA HA It's all automated now. Anyone telling you different is delusional - it's happening - it's here and it's NOW. Buckle up my friends - LEARN FAST on how to use this new industrial IT revolution!

Speed/lightweight. Elementor slow down drastically any wordpress website, and regarding bricks, well many of us still want to use plugins that are not compatible with bricks. Elementor recurring price and price increase is also a big deal. Not even mentioning that FSE = native = guaranteed that you won't come across compatibility problems with latest versions of WP.
I wish Elementor (pro) was fast and lightweight. Then i'd see no reason to keep using gutenberg as it missed many functionalities and the UI is bad

Now, hand off to a client who wants to update content on the homepage but needs to go to FSE, where they also have access to template parts and other templates they should not edit themselves. Then they have to go back into the main Wordpress interface to edit any other page or post content?
    It’s just so dumb.
It’s almost like the authors of WordPress don’t actually work with clients or non technical people….
The content of pages needs to stay in the pages interface while templates and template parts are in FSE.
Don’t even get me started on the crappy editing interface for Gutenberg.
I create thousands of sites a year and I have used Gutenburg on hundreds of those sites. I can hand write React components for Gutenburg for heavens sake. I know this tool inside and out. The authors of WordPress could really learn something about interface design from the likes of Bricks or Breakdance. I mean seriously, even Generate Blocks is better at Gutenburg than Gutenburg.
