    I am a novice but, I've been using page builders for some time and so, misunderstood some of the basics of Wordpress. I thought that Gutenberg was baked in to Wordpress (not a plug-in). Now I'm thinking of experimenting with building a site without a builder and following this tutorial while doing so. Especially after viewing your video on the bloat of scripts that page builders leave behind when changing out Themes. I like your approach and what I gain from your knowledge!

    • @jamiewp
      @jamiewp  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi, Gutenberg is actually baked into wordpress and is a plugin. The plugin is always a few steps ahead of what's baked in though.

    The future for core WordPress looks impressive! I wonder if we will see some currently premium features added one day to the core. For example, custom field creation and faceted filtering and search capability. Fingers crossed!

    • @jamiewp
      @jamiewp  Před 2 lety

      my guess is that those will stay as plugins - what do you mostly use custom fields for?

    • @simonkerridge
      @simonkerridge Před 2 lety +1

      @@jamiewp I believe you are correct, but one can hope!
      Presently I am experimenting with Meta Box to create custom post types and fields for a website that acts as a pseudo library of training resources. These consist of either PDF documents or CZcams video links for use by cadets I train, and I hope to offer the facility to search and/or filter the various resources.
      Appreciate there are plugins available that assist with this, and I recently purchased Piotnet Grid. However, in an ideal world, the core of WP would offer facets (AKA filtering) within Gutenberg.
      I appreciate this makes me "greedy", but the upcoming freedoms offered by FSE have stoked my appetite for more! :-)

    Hi Jamie I hope you are well today ! Great information 👍👍 you helped me to understand how to use this FSE editor, in the moment I use the Gutenberg. But the problem I have with pattern is this; each pattern has different font styles, size, family, so your website will look weird after adding a few patterns to it. Make them unite changing in each pattern the title, header, body content font style is a pain in the ass not an easy workflow. How make the pattern fonts unite with the theme css fonts?
    When you making backups with free plugins, do they make a backup of you custom simple css and your design styles and patterns you add to yoour pages?

    • @jamiewp
      @jamiewp  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Are you copying patterns between sites ?

    • @markuspatzer8658
      @markuspatzer8658 Před 7 měsíci

      No, but yesterday working with gutenberg on the twenty twenty theme I found out how to make the fonts same on all patterns: select the block with text and voila you can set the format. The other side the FSE editor, but adding last posts into a page then pagination will not work, or a load button not showing up, the rest works fine.
      FSE editor in the moment is a little bit complicated for me I try to learn it, I'm on the way...have a nice day Jamie !

    As a teacher of college level design students, I feel I have stumbled on a treasure trove in your channel! After learning about FSE and the bright future of Gutenberg, I wonder if I am doing my students a disservice if I teach page builders. I plan to introduce Elementor shortly but I see Gutenberg capable of what Elementor offers (with cleaner faster code). Any thoughts on the future of page builders with FSE on the horizon?

    • @jamiewp
      @jamiewp  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Robyn, firstly thank you so much for your kind words :) That's a great question and I'll be making a video just on that soon. FSE is certainly bringing a challenge to page builders going forward because with FSE blocks are now intrinsic to Wordpress.

    • @MarkConstable
      @MarkConstable Před 2 lety +1

      Elementor is much more intuitive to use than Gutenberg, therefor simpler for newcomers because it's truly WYSIWYG like any word processor. However, the extra page bloat and the Pro version paywall is enough of a negative for me to prefer Gutenberg, even though it's currently a bit tacky to use compared to Elementor (and Brizy for that matter). Gutenberg should be pretty slick by the end of 2022, so it's worth getting on board as soon as WP 5.9 is released in a month or so.

    Hello Jamie, in all the tutorials you start with making some pages, but I don’t fill the site, I only build it. Can I use Full Site Editing to make my theme but not fill it? So a user fills a simple page with title, text, highlighted text, image, menu-item etc. and with Full Site Editing I place those items in a template page. (I’m new with Wordpress, I use Drupal)

    Ah lots of good info but still the most ESSENTIAL parts are skipped. After building the header. You cut and then appear to be on your page for editing. Exactly how you got there is key and essential to understanding where to edit and how to edit in FSE. EVERY single CZcams video DOESN'T have the steps to editing a page. You can be in admin and click pages then click edit.. this takes you to a different spot if you were to go into the editor then click pages then click edit. They are apparently completely different and seperate?? Also need to know if it's possible to Assign a template to an existing page. If I created a home page but want it to be different to every other page. How do you even do that. It's a 'page' template by default but I need it to have a different header design to other pages. How?

    Stupid question, but also this is a stupid issue: How do I assign pages to menus? The function seems to have been completely removed. There's no way to edit menu items or assign items to menus. It starts with a default blank menu, and then you can create a new menu which also has no items in it, and items cannot still be added. Anyone else having this issue? Wordpress 6.1 is fundamentally broken without this basic function.
