Awesome video. It would be nice to take the time to do a full build tutorial using the Ollie theme. Would be looking forward to such a video.
Yes, but would also love to see how well this theme integrates with popular plugins like woocommerce
As a seasoned but retired software engineer (and newbie to WordPress), full site editing and block patterns are exactly what I would have expected WordPress to be when I first started looking at it a year or so ago. The idea of customizable, reusable software components certainly isn't new, - think object oriented design, Java Beans, etc. Those ideas are decades old and a staple of modern software design, and what I expected of WordPress. I was amazed (appalled) to find such a mishmash of builders, behind the scenes undocumented behavior, like the whole ecosystem was built by a bunch of teenage hackers. Finally we're seeing a glimpse of how it should have been all along.
It's a really exciting time in WordPress! It's been a little bit of a bumpy transition, but this is the sweet spot.
Here is another vote for more tutorials about the awesome OllieWP theme! Thank you for this tutorial.
Keep an eye out for one dropping later this week. 😉
Yes, It would be great to create an entire website with this including menus, header, and footer.
Would love to see more on this theme. So many cool FSE themes coming out. Each has its own quirks though.
Yes. Another video talking about FSE and basic concept behind it and how to use it properly would be awesome !
Yes I would love to see more of this.. Especially in combination with WooCommerce and then to see how it performs...
a full build tutorial using the Ollie theme would be amazing
Ollie looks really legit!! Would love to see more tutorials on it. Gonna to download and test this weekend!
Let me know what you think of it once you've tested it out. :)
Keen to go to FSE at some point in the future. It is the future after all. Yes, more please Paul
You Sir are a true contributor to the society of the beginning and advanced Websites creator. Learning so much from your experience, keep up that good work. Thank you :)
Wow, this is really impressive! I think I’m gonna give Ollie a serious shot!
This will be new game changer, definitely!
I would love to see more ❤
I feel like once Gutenberg & FSE offers better menu options and general page and block responsiveness then it’s a pretty useful option.
Would love to see a more in depth video using this theme!
I’ll be working on one this week. 😉
would love to see more in depth about working with this theme
A block themes that is easy to navigate - a video tutorial centered around an e-commerce store would be great
Thanks, this seems pretty ideal for building sites quickly.
I agree - the patterns look great straight out of the box and easy to customise to make them more unique while not needing additional plugins.
Great Demo!. Does anyone know how to change the template for a specific page? I see this on the Ollie docs page, but can't find it anywhere when editing a page
"To create the pages you see on the Ollie theme demo, simply insert Ollie’s full-page patterns onto any page, and apply the No Page Title template via the editor sidebar."
Thanks for the video, what blocks theme do you recommend to build an ecommerce?
I think you're right this is the future of themes.
I like it and i will try it,thanks
can this theme be used for e-commerce website building? If so, can you do a video on it pointing out how to set-up the menus, carts, checkout pages?
Thank you and would be great to see how and how far Ollie could be customised to make it a non-cliche looking site.
Can the changes be exported for fast reseller deployments? Edit: yes - I looked it up on their site.
Nice video on Ollie; I will give it a try! In your opinion, if I'm making a WP site for a non-techy client who will be adding blog posts, are they better off with an FSE theme or one I build using Elementor Pro with the Hello theme, Astra or Blocksy? (I must tell you that I can't get the hang of FSE and do not like it, so far)
@@OllieWP I could only find the one video. Do you have any tutorials on FSE?
Not yet, but coming soon! Stay tuned! 😎
Would it be a good option for a webbshop (not as frontstore)?
I'm exploring Ollie patterns right now
Let me know what you think of them once you’ve finished. 😁👍
How does Ollie compares to Spectra One theme?
Thanks for the video, Paul C.
Had a quick scan through the documents; doesn't seem to support CPT... hopefully that's to come.
Fingers crossed. I haven’t delved that deep into it yet, but will be testing the theme out in more detail this week. 👍
Interesting. I would love to see a how to make a website using Ollie. I'm looking to update our website and this theme could be the way forward.
I’ve been exploring full site editing lately and I like it very much, however I noticed that there aren’t many differences between each block themes, apart from the patterns that they have.
So i’m wondering if the theme market will rather become a pattern market.
Sounds viable. As the whole point of FSE themes is to basically be a framework to build upon, they probably will be very similar in nature.
Actually I think one of core wordpress developer said that themes as a concept might disappear in favour of FSE in the future.
I think the lack of diversity in block themes is more a lack of buy-in from designers and developers at this point. The WordPress folks were hoping we'd have a lot more block themes by now, but adoption has been a little slow.
There's nothing about the new paradigm that means block themes can't be very distinct from theme to theme. It's only limited by the creativity of the creator, just like with the classic WordPress themes.
Looks like a decent theme. Simple, but powerful. Would Ollie Theme work with the Gutenberg Plugins from Crocoblock?
I can’t see why not. You should still be able to use 3rd party addons if you want to. It’s a standard WP theme at heart.
I've been doing some tests with Ollie and I must say that it's awesome!
The only downside I could find was performance. The oficial landing page scores 77/100 on PageSpeed Insights, not great.
- Do you think this is because it's still in early stage development?
- Do you think some day it will be comparable with Generatepress + Generateblocks in terms of light weightness and performance?
Hey there, thanks for checking out Ollie! Keep in mind that the Pagespeed Insights isn't a perfect tool and you have to read the results with some context. It looks like it's dinging me for some of the image sizes I'm using (which I'll fix), but that wouldn't affect your score once you replace the images on your site. It's already scoring 100/100 on many tests, so this is circumstantial.
Block themes are inherently much faster than classic themes for many reasons, and performance is always top of mind when I'm building Ollie.
❤

It seems very interesting and I would like to see what you can come up with, but just because there are tools like Elementor Pro and Bricks Builder, it will hardly be able to beat them. Am I wrong?
It’s not about beating them. It’s about the right tool for the job and tools like Elementor or Bricks can be overkill in many situations.
Elementor and Bricks were both built to address page building shortcomings in WordPress, and they've done a great job at that. However, with the ability to do native page building in WordPress now, it will be interesting to see if that can cover most people's needs when it comes to building a website for themselves.
It looks promising, Betheme that i've mentioned couple of times has this "patterns" long time ago, called Pre-built sections you should check them, and i believe u love them ;)
I’m afraid BeTheme isn’t a product I’ll be featuring in the channel.
@WPTuts Sad, but i'll try to understand :) it's your home ;) i'm still fan of your videos!
How it'll behave with ACF and its loops?
I haven’t tested that side of things, but I would imagine this is where you’ll need to start building dedicated ACF blocks and added them to the patterns library.
The most complex thing is to get a fast loading ecommerce site. Can you so us how to setup a ecommerce template with this theme? So we dont need to think about purchasing premium plugins
G'Day Paul. Maybe also time to do a new review on Maxi-Blocks not that it has been released. Cheers,
I very probably will go back and retest it out now it's out of beta. :)
Would love to see a design walk through of a site using this. I'm fine with the idea of full site editing but in terms of getting people 'excited' by it, Wordpress themselves don't do a good job in terms of tutorials, far too much introverted stuff not enough detailed explanations all typical 'programmer' rather than end user. :)
I agree, WordPress don't really seem to know how to convey the best way to use it and I think that leads to confusion and people not adopting it.
@@WPTuts This is why we got good folks like you. Your tutorials are always well done and explained well in simple terms.
@@miguel213 Endorsed
@@muhammadwaqas9235 ???
@@WPTuts @Miguel appreciated your tutorials and the simplicity.
Then I commented, "Endorsed."
I just wanted to say that I totally agree with @Miguel. Your tutorials are too good. I would have paid for some of the tutorials on your channel 😀.
You're amazing ❤️
I see lots of design info aimed at sellers of a product or a service, but very little for those who build review/info-based sites for affiliate/Adsense marketing. What about a tutorial to fill the gap?
Does this beat elementor?
Totally different tools really.
@@WPTuts lol ok
Is it better than Blocksy? 🤔
Not better, but a totally different concept. Blocksy is an all in one theme with a tone of functionality. Ollie is more simple and basic which allows you to build from a template level.
FSE is a long way off imo. Would be good to see a video that explains what happens when we switch from a customizer theme to FSE 🤯
If it’s a Theme ! Bricks awesome than that
They are totally different tools. It’s comparing apples to oranges.
Sure, Bricks is a theme as is Ollie, but that’s where the similarities end.
Bricks is a site builder with a huge array of functionality that offers an almost infinite level of customisation.
Ollie is an FSE theme using native WordPress functionality.
Just wait until the Kickflip theme comes out.
Never heard of it. Why do you feel it's so good?
@@WPTuts ah, you missed the joke, Paul :) The term "Ollie" is a skateboarding trick. And a Kickflip tends to be the trick people learn after they learn how to Ollie. Silly, I know lol
@@miguel213 🤣
Great theme 😃 But what's with the arm/hand waving while talking?
It’s how I roll. 😉
OK 🤣@@WPTuts 👋
I've caught myself moving my hands/arms around while talking... I must stop watching your videos 👓 @@WPTuts 😉
@@ItisNigel just think of those extra calories you’ll burn while talking. 😉
Sure, yes please, create a site with a linked blog and a paid subscription option using only Ollie Theme. Thank you.
We’ll, you’re not going to get a paid subscription service just using the theme. That’s going to require either a plug-in or a SaaS.
just good men hahaha.....
Did I spot prices on some of the "patterns"... That would be misleading and annoying. So so so many hidden sneaky costs associated with "free" WordPress...
No, I don’t believe Ollie charges for the patterns included.
Sorry but nothing can beat elementor pro
😂😂😂😂
Performance is still an issue with Elementor, I find. For simpler builds, something along these lines might be a better option.
@@miguel213 I agree, even for more complex designs. I've rebuilt all my Elementor sites with Kadence and created a ton of design-patterns using Kadence Blocks...
$29 per MONTH?! This looks no better than the free versions of Elementor, Astra, or Gutenberg. Where is the advantage?
Sorry, what are you talking about? Ollie theme is free and not $29 per month at all. I think you've been looking at a different video.
@@WPTuts Thanks for clearing that up, WP. I followed your link to the main page and then clicked on the live demo, which shows pricing for Ollie. Apparently, all the info on that page is accurate except for the pricing!
