How To Adjust Your Car Mirrors To Eliminate Blind Spots SAE

  • Adjusting their vehicle's mirrors is something all drivers do as a normal routine. But according to the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and Car and Driver Magazine, it's also something that most of us are probably doing wrong! I read an article published in Car and Driver about a paper written by the SAE, in which the SAE laid out the best way to adjust your mirrors in order to eliminate dangerous blind spots. It opened my eyes and made me change how I was doing it, so I wanted to share that with you. I've also included a link below to the original article where this information came from and I recommend that you read it for yourself. Thanks for watching!

      Thanks, but neither the video nor the comments mention wide panoramic mirror. That's sad, because no adjustment will fully eliminate blind spots. SAE guys'd better recommend that device to all car manufacturers.

    • @HowSkills
      @HowSkills  Před 6 lety +5

      That would be a great idea if the car manufacturers would make that standard. I think that's the case with some European cars, but definitely not here in the USA. I recommend using blind spot mirrors in conjunction with this mirror set up - used together, they can considerably reduce the size of unavoidable blind spots. Those are quite popular too, though I didn't like it much - one still has to move his head far right and they are too small to be 100% sure in every situation. If it's panoramic mirror - everything is visible instantly with no head movement.

    I can also vouch for this. Been using this mirror setup for about a year or two and my confidence has sky rocketed. It allows you to have a 360/panoramic view of the cars behind you which is excellent for putting you at ease when changing lanes and being aware of the cars around you. What used to be a scary maneuver became a piece of cake for me due to this mirror setup.

      Also: since these mirrors are facing where your blind spot used to be, the cars may appear closer than they used to in the old setup. I had a small close call when I first tried out the setup. Wasn't close enough to be actually worrying but it was a little bit worrying

I use blind spot mirrors to see my side inside when backing up. I have discovered this myself since I started driving in my 20's and everybody thought it was incorrect. I could not care what other people thought because it made my driving safer. I did not meet anybody that uses the side mirrors like I do and like the SAE recommends. To precisely adjust them, I do it on the freeway, when a car passing me on the side and disappears from my rear view mirror, it has to appear in my side view mirror. Now I will use this video and showed it to my wife so she understands that her husband can be right even when it goes against the majority of people... ;)

    I replace the over the shoulder check by leaning my head the way you adjusted the mirrors.
    This brings into my eyeballs the parts that I wasn’t seeing (where a motorcycle might be). But it also leaves my eyes pointing forward.
    This means that if I am trying to make a lane change in uncooperative traffic, I can be checking the other lane and be ready in case the car in front of me brakes suddenly.

    There is something to be said for using your turn indicators as so many people do not, and to change lanes slowly despite pressure from anyone tailgating you. Lateral acceleration into the hole you see that you are going to insert your vehicle into is key to avoiding accidents and you survey that hole you are going to move into long before you move there; either to the left or to the right. Good video and information. Shall try the set-up.

    Hi, Stan - thanks so much for this. I live in abroad and when I was taking my mandatory one driving lesson before getting my license here (at age 58!, after having driven since i was 16), I turned my head slightly before moving to the left lane and my instructor could not understand what I was doing. Turns out it is a sure fail on the test if you turn your head! So it's great to get these tips.

    • @HowSkills
      @HowSkills  Před 5 lety +2

      Sorry, they failed you on your test! Some instructors might give you a little grace on something like that, but most do want you to keep your eyes on the road ahead and use your mirrors. I love this mirror setup and have used it for quite a while, but to be honest, I do still take a very quick look back before changing lanes. If you're constantly monitoring all your mirrors, you can often make lane changes safely without looking back over your shoulder. In the end, all that matters is pleasing the driving instructor during the test, isn't it! Thank you very much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment.

  • @smartdrivetest
    @smartdrivetest Před 7 lety +211

    Hi Stan - thanks for the video! What is problematic with this information is the words "eliminate blind spots!" As you stated at the end of the video, this system does not work for smaller road users: motorcycles, bicycles, scooters and pedestrians. And therefore, when the SAE indicates that it "eliminates blind spots", it moves drivers to stop checking their blind spots by shoulder (head) checking. I wouldn't recommend this system for either novice or experienced drivers because no matter how the mirrors are adjusted, it is NOT going to "eliminate blind spots" especially on larger vehicles. Thanks Cheers Rick

    • @HowSkills
      @HowSkills  Před 7 lety +69

      Very true...it's virtually impossible to totally eliminate blind spots, as no one has a system that enables you to see 360 degrees around your vehicle. But this mirror setup does give the advantage of seeing a panoramic view of vehicles coming up behind you and passing you. This is better than what most people in many driving environments use, which is why the SAE recommends it. It improves safety, but doesn't guarantee total elimination of driving hazards. Many people use it, and I can vouch for it in most situations, particularly interstate/highway driving. I also recommend blind spot mirrors in addition to this, as no one mirror setup is perfect. But I still believe this is better than most, and that anyone can benefit from it. The alternative is bigger blind spots around your vehicle. Thank you for your comment and observations!

      Sorry Rick, but I have NO BLIND SPOTS on either side of my car or big rig. Many years ago I made a booklet showing how correct mirror adjustment eliminates so called "blind spots". I have one booklet for cars and one for a big transport truck. You CAN NOT hide a car on the right or the left with this correct system. In both booklets I have my daughter and my son on bicycles in the so called "blind spot". They are clearly visible in the correctly adjusted mirrors. I like to offer $1,000 bucks to anyone who can hide a small car on the right or left of my car or rig. No one has ever been able to claim that $1,000 yet. All cars now come with safety convex mirrors on the right side, and to be fair Rick, I have carefully mounted an auxiliary convex mirror just below my left flat mirror. Go ahead! Try to hide a small car on the right or left of my vehicle. You can not do it.

    great for highway but in urban situations you create blind spots right beside your car's rear pillars (C pillars) making parking situations dangerous for pedestrians when backing up...also bicyclists tend to ride fairly close to the sides (some bikers do the same). This method is awesome for keeping track of wide vehicles, but I'd still recommend the old style adjustments + turning your head to see blind spots (or invest in a additional mirror, like trucks have, for blind spots)

      @HowSkills  Před 7 lety +16

      I recommend the method described in this video, but I also recommend adding blind spot mirrors that do show you those areas in close to your vehicle. This lets you cover the panoramic view around the rear and side or your vehicle, as well as helping you park, backup, or see bicycles/motorcycles that can get up close to you in dense city traffic.

    • @craigfreger7958
      @craigfreger7958 Před 7 lety +16

      l337pwnage: Sorry, you are incorrect. When you have your mirrors set correctly, the head check no longer serves as the primary blind spot detector. The SAE method has the mirrors and head check serving different purposes. Widening your field of mirror view gives you more information without having to turn and scan, leaving the head check for a narrower view that takes less time to process, thereby taking away less time from looking forward. With the SAE method, head checks can be done a lot quicker. Try it and see for yourself.

    This system has really worked for me! Very happy with the results while freeway driving, as I am often being passed by others. It does have one drawback, which is that adjusting this way doesn't let me easily see the side of my car when backing into a parking spot. I solved that problem with paste-on auxillary mirrors; basically a sliver mirror attached to the bottom of my side-views, giving me a proper view of the parking lines when backing up, or for the always challenging parallel parking situations.

      Awesome - you were way ahead of the curve on this! I think it's great once you get used to it - so much safer. I'm glad to hear that it's worked for you for all these years. Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching!

    Thank you very much for this video. I almost hit someone on a freeway on ramp all because of my blind spot. I tried your tip and works great.
