- How To Make Safe Left Turns At Intersections Across Oncoming Traffic: Don't Have A Wreck Like I Did!
When I was sixteen, and not too long after I had my driver's license, I was involved in a traffic accident that was my fault! It was late at night and I was in a rush to get home. I came to an intersection where I needed to turn left across traffic. I turned hurriedly, misjudging the speed of the car that was approaching. The other driver's car hit my car (actually, my dad's car) in the trunk area, and the resulting crash did thousands of dollars in damages to both of our vehicles. Fortunately, neither of us was injured in anyway, just a little shook up. That was a terrible experience, and resulted in my getting a traffic ticket for "Failure To Yield", along with having to tell my father what I'd done! I learned my lesson, and I wanted to make this video in hopes that it would help some of you to avoid an accident like this. Intersections are where a lot of accidents happen and where many drivers are seriously injured, so always approach and proceed through intersections with caution. I hope this video helps someone, and if it helped you in anyway, please let me know in the Comment section below. Thanks for watching!

One thing commonly forgotten about while doing a left UN-protected turn is that, we pay attention to find a safegap from oncoming traffic but we forget that there maybe pedestrians on the crosswalk of the road that we're turning into. In an unprotected left turn, we need to check for safe gap from BOTH oncoming traffic AND pedestrians who may be using that crosswalk. A reminder for myself first and a reminder for all. Drive safe.
Im taking my test soon 🙂 busy intersections are my biggest fear. This is EXACTLY WHAT I BEEN SEARCHING FOR very informative, very clear! THA K YOU VERY MUCH !!!!
Very glad to hear it helped...and good luck on your test!
i failed my driving test bc of a busy intersection 😭😭
@@justaverageapril oh sad to hear, better luck next time. Can you please share what exactly happened?
@@justaverageapril did you past?
This is what shocked when I first came to this country left turns are very different and dangerous from my country in dubai. Over there we dont have to worry about pedestrian or oncoming traffic because they have a red light. I feel its safer in dubai than here
I'm really nervous about taking my test. I had to give up driving over 30 years ago because of a seizure disorder and am finally seizure free now and have my permit, but it's been a long time since i've driven. I pray i will pass. I've waited over 30 yrs. to drive again! These videos are sure helpful for me. Thank you!
Good luck on your test, I'm certain you'll pass your test 😁
I have a lot of anxiety around driving and recently got a job that takes me into town (I'm used to more rural back roads) theres two very busy intersections I have to make lefts in and they make me so nervous.
Thank you for this video
"If you don't feel safe about it then it's not safe" made me feel a lot better about how I drive. Recently I've had a lot of people tailgating and honking at me because I'm a cautious driver and it really spooks me
Same here, i really don't like tail gaters, they always make me feel nervous or feel pressure to be in a rush.
same, got honked at yesterday for taking a couple extra seconds to right turn in my neighborhood (I'm learning rn with my permit)
@@strawb3rrysuccubusI’m also learning and too much nervous at turns
Thanks! Left turns are the scariest things for new drivers
They definitely can be, and a lot of accidents happen while making left turns. Experience talking here!
For me too. I’m a beginner and learning too and become scary sometimes
Good thing lights will eventually give you a green arrow protection if the yielding takes too long
You're story at the beginning is exactly what happened to me recently. Thank you for this video and saying what happened to you. I'm not a reckless driver or a speed demon, I just got confused and made a mistake. I should have just paused and waited.
If you don't know, don't go.
I am fortunate that nobody was hurt and I learned how to be more aware and safe when driving.
Very glad to hear that no one, including you, was hurt! Close calls can get the heart racing, but can also be good lessons to help us become better and safer drivers. I’m afraid I’ve learned too many things that way, but they were lessons that stuck with me.
I had the same story like yours I made a mistake instead of waiting I went on but thankfully no was hurt but damaged our cars
Will be driving in the US for the first time and this was super helpful. Crazy how different basic things can be from country to country. Thank you.
Very glad to hear it helped, and I complement you on taking the time before you get here to do some study on the differences in driving in the US. I've only driven in one other country, and I learned very quickly that I can't take for granted that everything will be the same there as what I'm used to at home. Sounds to me like you'll have no trouble driving in the US...enjoy your trip and thanks for watching!
Even state to state certain things differ
I am from India , recently shifted to US . This is the most informative video on taking Left turns . Cleared all the doubts . Thanks you for saving so many new drivers
Glad to hear it helped! Thank you very much for watching.
I already have my license and is out of practice for a year. Was in a car accident a year ago with my mom driving that gave me ptsd even though the accident wasn't too bad and we only had light injuries that healed after a couple of months x3 The other driver pulled out without checking for traffic and did an unprotected left turn onto the main road while my mom was going 45, the speed limit, and we slammed straight into them. Since then I've been super scared of driving XD I barely drive around my own block and barely to the gas station now. I've been driving more lately as I came out of the ptsd shell but I still feel very scared of making turns so I decided to watch your video! Thanks for the video, it was very informative and helped me gain a bit of confidence. Especially the part with the gap! If i don't feel safe making a turn then I should just keep waiting without letting the cars behind me worry me too much
This is the best left-hand turn teaching video I’ve ever watched. You really solved my puzzle about yellow lights in the intersection when I have to turn left. Thank you sooooooo much!
Glad I could help, and thank you for watching!
Thank you for this amazing video and explanation
My first car accident happened when a woman turned at those “left turn yield on green light” intersections right when I was already passing straight on a green light. Her parents accused me of speeding but I was clearly following the speed limit. Good thing the cops knew better and gave her the ticket.
Glad that worked out the right way for you. People are often quick to try to shift the blame even when they know they’re at fault.
I faced the 'Left Turn Yield On Green' situation today as I proceeded to the middle of the lane and quickly realized that I could potentially block the oncoming traffic. So I backed up a bit. This video helped me understand what I need to do to avoid such situation in future again. Thank you so much!!!
Glad to hear it helped
This video cleared all my doubt about unprotected left turns, specifically what to do when the signal becomes red and you are halfway into the intersection :) thank you very much for the clear explanation of the rules
8:49 I needed this advice.A car behind honked like a crazy man at 4 seconds gap yesterday. I almost got traumatized by that. This video gives courage to me.
I've been driving for more of my life than I haven't at this point, but this video was excellent. I wish I had had you (and youtube) as a resource when I started. Great work and thanks!
This summed it up perfectly. I was afraid of me doing the same thing that caused your accident. Thank you so much for this video. I’ll make sure to send it to my friends and family that are beginning to drive shortly.
Amazing video :) im currently in the process to get my permit but i could never understand what “yield on green” meant, although it seems so clear i couldnt wrap my head around it. ive never been much of a visual learner so getting to hear someone explain it really helped me! thank you so much for what you do to help those starting out!
I’m really glad to hear it helped!
Probably THE BEST video I’ve watched to date, and I’ve been binge watching MANY VIDEOS 😮 Thank you for taking the time to instruct those of us learning and preparing to be tested 😌❤️
This video is a relief for the ones who are confused about left turns. Thank you!
I'll be traveling to the US pretty soon on a business trip, and this is definitely great information for foreigners! Thank you so much for doing this great video!
Thank you so much. I just got my first car and I was so confused about land changing in intersections. You helped me a big time!
Thank you so so so much! You explained everything crystal clear! I never understood how making a left turn on an intersection worked, I'd just follow my dad's orders. There was a time I entered the intersection and didn't know who to look out for so I tried making a left although there was a car going straight ahead already. Dad yelled to brake so I did and that scared me away from driving for a while. Problem is, he never really explained what my error was.
But damn, this video is gonna push me directly to a driving test already! The intersection was the only thing holding me back. (And going reverse then parking, but whatever)
Again, thank you!!
Thank you for these videos. It is helpful to hear your thought process as you drive these routes.
Thank you for watching…hope it had something useful in it for you.
This such a good video! I am pretty decent at driving, but not only have I not done it much for many months, but now for the first time, I am driving completely on my own. So even though I know I am not bad at it, this was such a good reminder to calm my anxiety and refresh my brain, Thanks!
Perfect explanation, thank you so much. Helped me to clear my g2 exam in Ontario 😊
You shared excellent tips for beginners as well as old drivers. Thank you..
Thanks!!! I probably NEED to watch all these intersection videos. I have driving anxiety and the cities near me are BIG BAD TRAFFIC CITIES!!
One of the best if not the best driving teach skills channel I have ever watched, keep doing it the same way.
This is a good video on making left turns, I get nervous sometimes when making unprotected left turns on green light, especially when there's a lot of traffic, just 3 years ago I was in an accident making a left turn on green light, I was waiting at the intersection and the light turned green, at first I thought it was safe to go so I went, there was a median in the middle of the intersection, it was that kind of intersection, while I was making the turn I ended up hitting a car that was going in the opposite direction, at first I didn't see the car, it happened so fast, by that time it was too late, of course I was at fault and I got a traffic violation, lesson learned I guess, so now I try to be careful when making a left turn especially at a green light instead of a green arrow, watching your video helps.
I`m a super slowly-learning beginner driver! This video might save me from a future accident! Really appreciate it!
Such an amazing video showing different scenarios. I have such anxiety this makes me feel much better. Thank you!
This is the most comprehensive left turn video I have seen. Thanks for the video. Appreciate it 🙏
You're welcome, and thanks a lot for watching it!
I'm so glad I found your channel. I have my road exam next week and your videos are informative and so helpful!
Good luck on your road exam! And thank you very much for taking the time to watch the videos.
I’ve been needing a video like this, no one has been able to answer these simple questions that are super important! Thank you!!!! ✨
You’re very welcome, and thanks for watching!
Best channel I've watched to date. Very well explained and detailed!!! I already liked and subscribed. God bless you!!!
I nearly got into a wreck headed home today and almost got hit on the right side where my back door is. I was in the left-lane yielding for on-coming traffic and I didn't wait long enough for the cars passing and as I was making my left turn some dude comes out of nowhere and almost hits me on the side as I was turning. I've had my license for almost 2 weeks now and it was only my 4th or 5th time driving alone and I'm just thankful that the guy on the side of me slowed down and didn't hit me. I've only had my car for 4 days and I'm just glad that I learned from my mistake and was able to avoid disaster.
I’m really glad nothing bad happened to you! And that was a great learning experience for you since it didn’t end in a wreck. I’ve learned a lot over the years from “almost accidents”…those are lessons that stick with you. Take care!
Thank you! Exactly what i needed. Havent drove 10 years and today I have to drive abroad so this was very helpful and needed.
Glad to hear it helped out!
Thank you sir. Its very clear. You answered my question. God bless you more❤️🙏
Already been driving a bit with my permit, but still learned some great stuff. I thought this video would be good to share with others I know who haven't started driving, but this turned out to be great for me as well. this video reinforced some great stuff, and taught me some new stuff too :) thank you very much for such a well put-together video
Thanks for taking the time to leave the comment, and I’m especially glad to hear it helped you as well!
Thank you so much! I love when you highlight parts of the road, like the lanes and lane markings, it really helps me understand and see what youre talking about. And putting the camera outside your car is so helpful! Actually seeing what it looks like to make the turn, real traffic lights, and real cars is so helpful. Thank you!
I passed my Class 5 today. Your videos contributed a lot. Keep up the great work!!!
Awesome! I'm very glad to hear you passed...congratulations! Your study and practice paid off.
Being a new driver in Canada, so far I have watched lots of videos about left turn & found this one SUPERB!! Thanks and stay blessed always!!!
You're very welcome, and blessings back to you as well!
Thank you very much sir, this video definitely taught me a lot! God bless you 🙏
Thank you sooooo much for making these videos. I use them in my classes because they are clear and concise.
You're very welcome, and I'm beyond honored that you can find a use for them in your classes...so cool!
The most complete video on left turns, it covered all possible situations, well explained, thank you!
Glad it was helpful, and thank you very much for taking the time to watch it!
Best video on left turns at an intersection. I was not sure about the Yellow arrow. Thanks for explaining it!
thanks for making your video so detailed and thorough. i'm a newer driver, having just got my license a year ago and my first car only two weeks ago, but a few days ago i was in an accident because i made a left turn and failed to gauged the speed of an oncoming car. thankfully we were both fine, but it was a really frightening experience that traumatized me quite a bit. i'm incredibly nervous around left hand turns now, but your video has helped me feel like i understand them a bit better, so thank you so much.
Sorry that happened to you! Accidents are very traumatic emotionally, and I hope you weren’t hurt physically.
This is amazing thank you! Driving in America soon for the first time and this is really helpful!
Thank you so much for this. I always get nervous at left turns bc I don't have good judgment yet. Scared the heck out of my driving instructor today lol. But hey that's why I'm here. I want to be as safe as possible!
I understand, and I’m glad your goal is to become a safer driver…that tells me you’re gonna be a great driver!
I usually never give thanks on a youtube video but seriously! thanks a TON cuz this video came up right when I needed it! I just saw a video of a person failing their driver’s test because they didn’t yield to the other driver across from them when the sign said to yield on green. Just thinking about the fact that a scenario like that could also happen to me when I’m taking my driver’s test, is mostly the number one thing that I fear the most. I was thinking of searching up videos on how to deal with that, but ironically, my recommended page did it for me so now I’m here 😂
Thank you very much for taking the time to leave a comment and watch the video! I really appreciate that, and I don't know how many times CZcams has served up just the right video for me too when I needed it.
👏🏼 Great video with lots of useful information on the left turns.
Thanks for putting this up!
Thank you so much. I have been so worried about left turns on busy intersections
Thankyou for this video I have had my license for about 4 months and could not figure out left hand turns on intersections because some are guaranteed sade and some you have to yield but now I know and don't have to avoid them thankyou
Thank you for the comment and glad to hear the video helped you!
Thank you, barely passed the test but kept your tips in mind.
Thank you so much for your video, you can not find this information in the book, Im a beginner and now I have a clear picture of all the combinations of left turns and possible situations. Thank you for your work!
I hope it helped, and thank you for watching and taking the time to leave this comment! Take care and drive safe.
Excellent ❤ love the way he explain my doubts….thank you very much…
So helpful! Thank you so much for your videos
Thanks for clarifying. I’ve had a near miss because of this same mistake.
Excellent video. It not only covers left turns, and pedestrian safety at interections, but also covers lane changes.
This was very helpful, I just passed my driving test and am nervous of driving alone but this video gave me a better understanding..🙂
Glad to hear that you passed your driving test, and I hope that you are becoming less nervous of driving alone. Thanks a lot for watching, and I apologize for taking so long to reply!
Thank you for such a detailed video, those pauses with marks on your vid are super helpful to understand better.
I’m glad to hear it helped you, and thank you for watching. Take care out there on the road!
Very detailed and informative video. Thank you!
This was so helpful! Thank you Stan!
Thank you Sir! you explained it so well.
And thank you for watching! I hope it was of some help to you.

Awesome 👍 thanks! Very informative, built up my confidence in the road test
Glad it was helpful, and best of luck on your road test...bet you will do great!
Thank you soooo much sir, I’m having trouble on intersection to turn left and also the rules of traffic light, thank you sooooo much, soon taking my road test!
Best of luck on your road test…you’ll do great, I’m sure!
Hey, thanks a ton Stan. Great informative video. Shall soon be visiting the states as a tourist. I am an Indian familiar with driving right-hand drive cars. Your video helps familiarize me with left-hand drive cars to a large extent. Thank you so much
Glad to hear it helped, and it’s great that you’ll be coming to visit here soon! Enjoy your vacation!
Great detailed information about left turns with practical examples even for experienced drivers. Thanks.
Very welcome, and thank you for taking the time to leave a comment!
This was really thorough. Judging whether you have enough time to make a left turn with oncoming traffic is so tricky. Thanks!
If you dont know when to go when there’s traffic light just wait for arrow That’s what I do
A similar experience happened to me this morning. I am a very new, but cautious driver. I was making a left turn and misjudged the distance of the car approaching and almost had a head on collision with the cop car. Luckily, no one was hurt.i didn't get a ticket or anything but the cop pulled me over and was so mad. I felt so bad. Thanks for this video. ❤
thank you so much for posting this! I feel more confident about crossing intersections now
I’m glad to hear you’re feeling better about intersections, and you’re going to get more comfortable with them the more you practice doing them. Thanks for watching the video!
Thanks for the video.
Here in Canada, GTA to be specific, left turns get a little tense. The person behind starts to honk pressurizing you to make the left turn, there is a never ending barrage of on coming traffic which deprives you of a safe distance to make the turn, and when you do find a window pedestrians continue use the crossing, all of which leaves you stuck in the island. Every now and then, you'll find a driver stuck in the island ending up blocking the cross traffic.
I hear you...left turns can be a very difficult thing to do, especially in situations like you described. Takes a lot of patience sometimes to wait for the right moment to make your turn while trying to ignore impatient drivers around you. Just never go until you feel it's safe, and not when the person behind you thinks you should go.
This video is actually usefully, and honestly is gonna help prevent mistakes that new leaners could make
Very well explained! Thank you 😁
Thanks for the video. It's pretty very well explained with every situation, and the editing is so great as well!
Thank you very much for watching...I really appreciate it!
I found just what i was looking for plus more knowledge. Thanks Stan!

Very glad to hear it helped, and thank you for watching!
Excellent video and excellent review of the camera, I've been thinking about getting a new one for my channel for a long time, but I don't really know what they are, but I realized something through the video and I will change the current one..

Well explained you are a life saver
Thanks for this! I’ve been doing lessons all week and have my last lesson tomorrow, followed by my test shortly after. Left turns at green lights make me so anxious! Same with hill parking. Knowing when to start turning the wheel left is what I struggle with.
I passed!!!!
🥳🥳
Omg, this is just what I was looking for. I failed by G2 test in Ontario, Canada, due to not yielding to a pedestrian on right turn at intersection. I really wanted refresher on left turn rules, before taking my next test. Thank you!
You’re welcome, and I bet you’re going to ace your test!! Best of luck!
Sorry I meant not yielding on a *left turn, at a major intersection. Great refresher on the rules for left turn.
This instruction video is really good and covered a couple of mistakes I see almost every driver make. One is keeping tires pointed straight ahead while waiting . The second is pulling our straight and making a semi-circle.
Too many people make a straight line when turning left. This actually puts the vehicle on the wrong side of the road and forces the driver to make a correction to avoid hitting the center divider, putting their car in the adjacent lane. Annoying and dangerous.
You explained how to make the turn with simple instruction. Awesome job.
Thanks for the comment and for watching. I always strive to explain things correctly.
Probably the best and comprehensive video on Left turns !
Thank you sooo much
You’re welcome, and thank you for taking time to watch the video!

Thank you very much. Your explaining helps a lot.
You’re welcome! Glad it helped you out.
Hi Stan, I am watching your video over an over for my G2 road test purposes. I passed today with one major error actually but because my Examiner was super duper nice guy, he said I let it go now and he told me my other minor errors as well especially for right and left turn he said am too slow and break to much, so I thought dam I failed again for my 3 rd times 🤦🏻♀️, he asked me go to the centre to get marked sheets, I still didn’t realize that I actually passed, told the lady in the counter that I need to get my marked sheet because am failed, she looks at me like what do you said ? You are passed she said 😳. I feel like stupid that time. Anyway am super happy after 3 attempts I can passed with the Examiner help of course, I will never forget that moment and really grateful for that super duper examiner. 👍
Congratulations to you and a pat on the back to your examiner too! Sounds like he was very fair and helpful, and I’m glad you had someone like that. Made for a nice surprise at the end!
I really like and enjoy watching your videos. Soon I am going to practice driving after arriving in CA next week.
Thank you very much for watching them…I appreciate that! I just got back from California where I did a lot of driving. Enjoy your time there.
Thanks so much this is really important 😊
Thank you amazing video , very detailed.
Failed my drivers test twice and both times they critiqued my left turns. Thank you for this video
You're welcome! Keep practicing and you'll be showing them how to do perfect turns in no time.
Excellent video. Very detailed and includes almost all scenarios 👍
Thank you very much for watching!
