First time I have heard this work.( A suggestion from a 'cellist friend for a recital.(I am her pianist)) I'm not a great fan of basso ostinato and I felt that Bloch was having trouble tearing himself away from that low C.Also I find that element of "Jewishness" in his music a little too obvious, even slightly "commercial". I prefer that Jewish element in the music of Shostakovich.He does it better ,and he wasn't even Jewish. Whereas I am. Still ,it's quite attractive.Not sure how it will go in program which contains the Shostakovich 'cello sonata and a piece of my own for "cello and piano called "Hommage D.S.C.H." which you can hear on You Tube.Maybe I will write a piece for unaccompanied 'cello. ?
