I think they should UNAPOLOGETICALLY AND UNIRONICALLY embrace the original ethos and aesthetic of Midcentury Modern, with all that entails. Imagine bringing back "Rocket To The Moon," with that aesthetic in mind, but update the writing and the ride experience to more closely reflect modern amusement technology. That glorious Sputnik and Mercury Redstone optimism! That explorer spirit!

I'm old enough to have experienced Peak Tomorrowland and it was PEAK Tomorrowland. All the motion in the land (between the Monorail, People Mover, Skyway, Autopia, Submarine Voyage, Rocket Jets IN THEIR CORRECT LOCATION and even the rotating theater) had such a kinetic energy that you couldn't help but be excited when you walked in. I fact, it was the top land in the entire park. If they could bring back even a taste of that period, the world will be a better place.

All I really want in Tomorrowland right now is a fixed PeopleMover, a way to get Astro Orbiter back on the roof, Starcade, and attractions back in the Carousel, Magic Eye, and maybe even turn Pizza Planet back into an attraction. A large part of the problem is that so many spaces aren't being used to their full potential, if at all.

  • @bwheeler03
    @bwheeler03 Před 3 měsíci +42

    Ways to fix Tomorrowland:
Bring back People Mover, exact same track
Have the whole land powered on solar energy
Move out Star Tours, bring back Journey through inner space? The inner space idea still has legs
Put Astro Orbiter back on top of People Mover hub
    Autopia vehicles go electric
Bring back Starcade with cutting edge games
Have new-release movies or short films play in the theater
Redo sky buckets with travel to Batuu and to California Adventure, with a midway stop in Tomorrowland.
Use Innoventions building to showcase science exhibits, refreshed yearly. Like a Kids Science museum. Add back a learning element to the land

I hate to say it, but I think the name Tomorrowland might be the snag in all this. Like others have said in the comments, today's "Tomorrow" isn't exactly as optimistic as the "Tomorrow" of the 50s and 60s (and even up into the 90s). I went to the Boston science museum a couple weeks ago, which was a ton of fun, but even so, their exhibits that look forward are more somber than the future exhibits I saw 20-30 years ago. So maybe Disney's Tomorrowland should be more of an homage to the retro-futurism of the past. I feel like Meet the Robinsons would be a good IP to use more too.

As has been mentioned before, the post-war period as one of optimism. There was the expectation that humanity was on a march toward utopia and technology would make that happen. Tomorrowland was a reflection of that optimism. Now the expectation for the future is one of absolute dread with technology's only contribution being to lull us into a comfortable complacency with the coming sixth extinction.

IMO, the problem isn't changing Tomorrowland, it's changing the mindsets of others that every ride at Disney parks are "sacred". As an example, I imagine a number of rides in the space Autopia and the Submarine Voyage occupies, you don't need one huge Tron ride or anything like that, but 2-4 dark rides that are of smaller scale that eat up people and don't require stupid virtual queues or lightning lame (which they absolutely will be designed with).

The sky tram, although older, was also part of the esthetic. You have moving Monorails, PeopleMovers, submarines, sky trams, the Carousel and even the Omnimover in Adventure, all moving at the same time, even before Space Mountain. Oh yeah, Autopia. Well, see, I was there, and I remember at least two Autopias... and they were dumb. If I wanted to travel in a car on a freeway, well, that's how we got to Disneyland. Along with the added bonus of being yelled at by my Dad. Yeah, not my favorite... well, not so much. Mission to the Moon/Mars, well, that was also cool, but Star Tours is better.
And seeing real company names on the rides, TWA, McDonell Douglas and Monsanto (well, ok, again, not so much) just brought this marvelous fantasy even more into a real world.

I don't know if you've ever thought of this but actually with the line about " the hope for a peaceful and unified world" on the plaque I think the best place for Small World would actually be in Tomorrowland. Having said all that, my thinking now (with a recent announcement) is that they will completely dump Tomorrowland. I hope I am wrong but I could see Pandora there. Space Mountian, the subs, and Atopia could all be rethemed to Avatar and the rest just completely gutted. The sub and Atopia area is a big problem for them, but I could see both being themed to Avatar and solving that problem. Again I hope that I am wrong, but it's the first thing I thought of when I heard the Avatar Land announcement.

Solving the Tomorrowland problems isn't all that difficult, Disney just doesn't seem to want to do it. Most of it is already Retro-Futuristic so staying with that would work. Like you said it could be a nod to past and some predictions of the future, but nowadays they just want to plaster IP everywhere. Here's a start, Mission to Mars could come back in some form since a manned mission to mars is still interesting. The Captain Eo theater could utilize projection, lighting, and sound technology blended with the Finding Neo depth projection to deliver a glimpse of what a movie could be in the future. Like placing you in an Opera House, or a middle of a Hurricane, you get the idea. There's tech now that Autopia could give guests Manual or Self Drive options and have different paths with unique theming. Maybe different Disney Destinations, or if they went all out a few show buildings? Of course the People Mover could make a return.

My honest thoughts on what should be changed regarding Tomorrowland:
Tomorrowland was always a place to emphasize edutainment, educate people and children on the future and future technologies through attractions and entertainment. That idea has been so obviously lost to replace everything with IP and cheap, quick changes to save money. So with that in mind, here's what I feel would probably be best for Tomorrowland (this is my opinion so take it with a grain of salt).
    1. Astro blasters has to go, keep the omni mover ride system and track layout and if possible try to keep the interactive elements to it, instead have it focus on fantastical and futuristic societies and cities. Again this is just like loose ideas so I'm not gonna go fully in depth but you get the idea.
    2. Move Star Tours over to Galaxy's Edge, perhaps creating a more modern and better version of it over there. As for Tomorrowland, keep the current Star Tours system and focus on space travel, exploring the stars with tons of different adventures, open for hijinks and education at the same time. Also, the current jankiness of Star Tours' system works perfect as current space travel is a rough venture and so would add to how difficult space travel really is.
    3. Move Astro orbiter back over to being on top of the People mover station and of course bring back the People mover. The People mover is too crucial to the structural integrity of the buildings, plus the aesthetic of multi layered, vertical transportation on the ground and off gives a great futuristic look to the area. Fix up the track, update it to modern standards and it could be very solid in improving the atmosphere of the land.
    4. Bring back Carousel of Progress, modernize the show scenes and improve the animatronics and perhaps add scenes showcasing the future and the possible far future. The current one is already becoming outdated so it could work to bring a new and updated version to Disneyland.
    5. Space Mountain is perfect as is, perhaps just remodel the outside show building to that of what Tokyo Disneyland is gonna do to just update aesthetics.
    6. Bring back the theater, show a new film on the future, similar to Captain EO but a lot more modernized and futuristic of course.
    7. Starcade could honestly just be converted into an exhibit showcasing newer technologies and things to come in the near future.
    8. Now on to Submarine Voyage and Autopia. First with Submarine Voyage, either bring back 20,000 leagues updated to modern / future technologies or a new under sea adventure. Make it totally original with no IP and emphasize deep sea exploration technology and education on the ocean. With Autopia I genuinely have no clue what you could do as it's not something that can really be updated to the future, perhaps just a new attraction or experience showcasing the future of cars, a smaller version of Test Track I honestly don't totally know.
    9. This would be like the secondary option to Autopia and Submarine Voyage and would almost 100% not happen, but just completely remove both rides for multiple brand new experiences. Or, and this won't happen but it's fun to think, bring Tron over to that area. Tron could be the big IP ride of the land and still focus on a realistic future that fits with the rest of Tomorrowland. Now of course the hard part is the monorail as it would be cutting right through that area but if they could make it work I feel that that could also work.
Again all of this is my opinion so like I said take it with a grain of salt.

Both Tomorrowland in DL and Hollywood land in CA are in dire need of an update/upgrade.
Tomorrowland needs the carousel to be used. It’s a great spot not being used. People mover and its location is another unused spot but the damage from rocket rods could be a major cost that may be more than they are willing to pay.
As for Hollywood land something has to happen with all that dead space that rarely gets used except for an occasional meet/greet or a party space

Utopia land - Working on our balance with the universe, our planet, it's inhabitants. and with each other. The future will always change, but our seemingly eternal goal towards success as a species and it's relationship with our environment will never change. We need "timeless" lands that don't require us to constantly change. That is why the other lands work. Our current goals as an inhabitant of the world have splintered, where many, after realizing our vulnerabilities as a species, have turned to an "every person for themselves" mentality. We crave and need entertainment that gives a path and a focus on specific ways to get there = Utopia land.

i personally think that if disney can implement a mesh of retrofuturism and mid-century modernism into tomorrowland it will really save it. i feel like ever since y2k happened, the optimisms of the future has just gotten worse and worse. but if something as big and influential as a disney park can promote a positive future, i mean who knows what could happen you know?

@@shay.exe. great comment! And I love your optimism. I think I've lost confidence in Disney's ability to be positive. They seem to be injecting a very sad reality into everything. They've done some things well though so I'm not trying to totally trash them. But the future is very unstable right now and pushing reality on people is not the way to go. We need an escape, we need hope, and we need unity. Badly.

The "Tomorrowland" problem is that Disney does not want to build new, non IP attractions. That's why Disneyland's Tomorrowland in particular is in bad shape. If they can shove some Tomorrow Land adjacent IP into the land, like Toy Story, they will, but until then or until a real leader like Eisner comes along, it will lie broken. It's a sad state of affairs. Perhaps Epic Universe will light a fire under Disney with Universal's non IP offerings like the Celestial core of the new park.

That being said, one of the things that would make my millennium would be to bump into you at the Magic Kingdom during one of your visits. If that takes place, you've got a Haunted Mansion and PeopleMover riding buddy. As many times as you want. I find your enthusiasm and love for the parks refreshing. (And I agree with you in the spirit (intended) of the idea that The Mansion is one of the greatest things ever built. How rare is it that you get to ride through a work of art? I mean really.) Love your videos. Be well.

As a baby boomer (: I’ll dissent that, while I liked most of the rides individually, I didn’t like the sterile shopping-mall-like look. I guess it made sense when Disneyland opened as a bunch of corporate display areas, but lacked character and detail, especially after the Fantasy renovation (after its 2.5D circus tent look). The Jules Verne look I liked best, since it had a personality (not that everyone agreed with it), reminded me of the Small World facade, and tied in with the Submarines.
Another YT Disney video suggests that Tomorrowland will have a major overhaul, so that’s why it hasn’t had much attention. Although, yeah, I still want the PeopleMover! :D

Here's how you fix Tomorrowland, Restore it to the way it was in the 80s with a few alterations.
    Peoplemover, duh
    Return of the Skyway
Restoration of the Rocket Jets back on top of the Peoplemover platform
Restore the Submarines to their original voyage through liquid space to the North Pole complete with the giant squid, mermaids, Atlantis, and sea serpent
Carousel of Progress with a new final scene
A newer version of Adventure Thru Inner Space or the return of the Endor Express aka the original Star Tours
Restore the Starcade complete with the second floor
Make Autopia two separate tracks again
    A new CircleVision 360 film
In accordance with the Tomorrowland 2055 plans, the addition of Alien Encounter complete with the alien breath on your neck in the dark.

A few things - Bring back the people mover into the format of Disney world's people mover. Update the monorail to a saddle track maglev and get rid of those tire and wheel maintainance costs. Get rid of the Carosel theater and replace it with Tron LCR. Oh, and get rid of Honda as the sponsor of Autopia. The Briggs and Straton engines were so much better, or, convert to EV.

Honestly, the only ways to really fix Tomorrowland would be to either go a completely different route and retheme it into something else, or go with a look of the past. If it were up to me, I'd either remake it into villains land, or if I had to stick to something "futuristic", I'd retheme it into Victorian style New York with brick buildings and go steam punk by adding giant cogs, where all rides will be steampunk themed.

-Get rid of Star Tours. Replace Web Slingers with a Star Tours-style ride but with Marvel and replace Star Tours with an omnimover dark ride themed to Walt Disney himself.
-Relocate Astro Orbiter to the top
    -People Mover (Duh)
    -Space Mountain refurbed
-Incredibles themed Dream Works Theater style show in Magic Eye
-Autopia and Subs earmarked for expansion, but the subs concept could be reworked into a Way of Water themed Avatar Land

It was a combination of bad luck and the damn thing constantly being broken down! The days it was working I'd put if off because of wait time or just wanting to go later in the day. Of course, later in the day, it broke down.

Ahhh, Tomorrowland that is not so much looking into our future (now a days). It’s a beast to tackle to figure out. Do we pull from our current world? Do we dare reach into the future? Inspiration for the future seems to what we may have thought Tomorrowland should be. --} Autotopia could have been a chance to start the steps into the rest of the 21st century & may be 22nd; with electric cars or hybrid cars. I would say, challenge the Disney Imagineers to come up with newness to Tomorrowland.

  • @genappithy

I think the best sign that Disney is ready to do something about Tomorrowland would be if the sponsorships of Star Tours and Autopia ends, which could be as soon as 2025 and 2026.
I doubt Disney would announce they are planning to bulldoze an attraction while it still has a sponsor and I doubt Disney would feel motivated to spend money to replace a ride while someone else is paying to keep it open
But if in the next couple years those sponsorships end that could mean they have new things planned for the space

Great video and I definitely agree Tomorrowland needs to change. However, whatever is did in the past can’t actually be possible now all except the possibility of the people mover. Sure, Galaxy Edge is immersive but does it actually scream Star Wars. Sure it does now because of popular characters being visited and droids. Take that away and all you got is a lackluster Whiney emo villain, a Mary Sue person that’s given everything, a ride experience that either constantly breakdown or never changes, a rebel spy that nobody knows her name, an announcer of the fake villain, and the only popular character that is there is Chewbacca. I mean sure Star Tours would fit better in Galaxy Edge but the thing is Star Tours is actually the best version of the Eisner area and even the updated version of the Iger vision. However, I think they missed the mark with Galaxy Edge meaning it’s basically stuck in the modern fictional future way. I mean the best way they can actually put Star Tours into Galaxy Edge is possible they have to take out Milleniums Falcon Smugglers run. Which means that the Millenium Falcon could actually be like the At-At be used as a decoration and showman ship. However, I don’t think Disney is actually idiotic enough to close something popular just to move it to a place that actually needs another update as well. I mean despite Galaxy Edge has roaming characters popular or not basically it is also the same as Tomorrowland stuck in modern reality not knowing what is actually the future of it. That’s kind of why they are bringing back the past characters because those are popular where the ones that are in the modern Star Wars sequels miss the torch and it fell off the cliff like the Light Saber in the last Jedi that Luke throw off.

I hear the Peoplemover track is structurally unsound. If so, they need to rebuild it, looking EXACTLY like it was 1967.
