  • We’re going to wrap up our discussion on the course of the Second Vatican Council today with Fr. MacGillivray by looking at the fourth and final Session of the Council, which took place in 1965. To do this, we’ll hone in 4 of the most important of constitutions that were passed, dealing with Religious Liberty, Divine Revelation, Ecumenism, and more. These documents mark a definitive shift in how the Catholic Church considered these important issues - and makes 1965 perhaps the most momentous year in the recent history of the Catholic Church. If you’ve seen last episode, you’ll be well equipped to identify the ambiguity and the “time bombs” in these documents that would shape the way the Catholic Church looks today.

I was born in 1967, in a Catholic Mexican family in Mexico City. I attended the Traditional Latin Mass as a baby, and then it was over: Novus Ordo Mass from then on. And I never realized it, but the Catholic practice I learned, even though it came from good, well-meaning parents, was infected with modernism. But now that by God's mercy I am learning about Traditional Catholicism, it feels like coming home, and I begin to see the SSPX as an ark of salvation from the cancer of modernism that is rotting the Church. Sancta Maria, Mater Ecclesiae, auxilium Christianorum, ora pro nobis.

I feel like I'm in the same boat as yourself. Except born in 81. I knew my parents grew up with Latin Mass but did not know much about it. Over the past few years... eyes opened... i felt robbed of culture based on what i was seeing and learning... but not anymore...glory to God... learning more and more everyday and passing on what I learn to others. I feel a resurgence has been growing and it is snowballing into a giant snowball of praise to the Almighty especially in the traditional Latin Mass.

Another excellent episode. One simply cannot study the documents of V-2, in light of the fullness of the Tradition, and come to any other conclusion than that a rupture occurred. A rupture whose fruits are painfully evident. Thanks be to God for Archbishop Lefebvre and the Society for holding the line and continuing to extol the Truth.

I agree. Sad things I see so so many so called catholics defending V2, post conciliar popes, etc. I can't understand how can they pretend everything is fine

There is no higher authority in the church than a council attended by the bishops of the world and overseen by the successor of St Peter. Most of the votes on the documents weren't even close.

The Council needs a review and many ambiguities removed and things that lead astray to be removed. That might be SSPX duty in the future. A committee in Rome under a good pope should be set up and SSPX should be part of it. That is my prayer.

Thank you so immensely, for this Stunningly Exquisite Series of Truth!!! I always wondered what is was exactly, that was so deeply troubling, about the Novus Ordo "Church." Couldn't put my finger on it. But thanks to this Wonderful Truthful Series, I see now, that it was the Nauseous Emphasis on "man fulfilling himself" instead of, on the Life Giving emphasis of "man fulfilling his duties TO GOD!!!" The later, puts everything, in perspective! No more elevating man; serving man; man's dignity; and what is "his due!" Rather what is due, God!!! This proper Truth, is Freeing! Makes families more Charitable, marriages more Beautiful, and learning more Joyous! I am sending this Magnificent Series to everyone I know, including the Archbishop of my area! God bless you!!! Thank You!!! 😊

This clearly points out the very documents which contain passages which run contrary to what the Church had previously taught. Its not just a case of misinterpretation, as many neoconservatives claim. Or its implementation. There are problematic documents which were penned by problematic contributors who had no business meddling with the Council. This illustrates why the 2nd Vatican Council, and its legacy, has carried a lot of negative baggage since it ended in 1965. It has garnered a lot of controversy.

Dei Verbum made it possible for The New American Bible to be published in 1970 (using Protestant Bible Scholars to create the New American Bible)
    The Jerusalem Bible as well
It helped boost the creation of “modern” Catholic Bibles using Protestant biblical scholars to replace the traditional Duoay Rheims Bible and the Vulgate

I've noticed that they never list the good things of other false religions. What are the good things of pagan idol worship? Offering food/milk to an elephant statue for example. I've asked this over and over on Catholic Answers and other sites with no response. Someone said the 7 chakras are like the 7 sacraments....really? how so?....silence.

One tiny aspect is missing from these excellent - if necessarily abbreviated - studies. That is: why it was considered necessary at that time to address the needs of the world (rather than the concerns of the Church) with a growing sense of urgency .. and not merely as a useful or possibly helpful thing to do so. Without understanding this seemingly irresistible demand one cannot begin to comprehend how so many odd-ball experts were able to insinuate so many off-the-wall ideas into the official documents of the Church, and indeed how the Church may view or review Herself i.e. in the then suddenly/ rapidly/ utterly changed world of AD 1945 - 1965.
And all of that as experienced, in context, even before/ outside the relatively narrow confines of a Church Council. Archbishop Lefebvre, the saintly soul that he was (and is), understood this pressure better than most, clearly a lot more acutely than St John XXIII - thus he had a better grasp on both the missionary/ pastoral needs to be faced, also on the emerging political realities that prompted many of these new 'needs'.
So that his hands-on experience of success as a pastor was swept aside in favour of hot air and gestures is telling, for though he had been at the very heart of the Winds Of Change (as Britain's Prime Minister, Harold MacMillan, put it in AD 1960) his effective influence at the Council - in both the reality and the hype - had been side-lined .. purposely.
St Joseph : Stand by us.
Keep the Faith; tell the truth, shame the devil, and let the demons shriek.
    God bless. ;o)

And you are DEFINITELY WRONG about St. John Paul II. I can see why he tried to Excommunicate your Bishop Lefebvre. You over analyze and exagerate some aspects of Vatican II.
