My goodness! My palm journey is getting even better! I bought 3 Gaussia Gomez Pompae last week, two windmills and four Mexican Fan Palms this week. All because of you introducing me to how to grow them.
Hi Jeff! That was quite a chore. It does look a lot happier now. You said you're going to be busy for the next couple of weeks. I hope everything is ok with you and your family. Hi Turbo! Thank you so much for sharing!
I live in Alpharetta, Georgia which is about 40 minutes north of Atlanta by car. We were in zone 7a. In 2024 they say we are in zone 8a. I first learned about Windmill palms when I saw them on the cover of "English Gardening" magazine covered in snow. At that time I had no idea that any tall, tropical-looking palm could withstand our cold Winters. I now have three very tall Windmill palms in our backyard. I bought seeds online and now have 11 Windmill palm trees in my greenhouse. The Winter before last, we had three 9 degree F days in a row. My 3 mature outdoor palms survived without a problem. I tried however to plant some younger Windmills in my backyard and some critter ate the fronds. I think that cold weather killed them off. Here is a soil tip... I make my own soil in a medium-large compost bin. I add grass clippings, suitable table scraps, and cedar wood chips from Lowes. My 11 young Windmill Palms love this mix. Before I transplanted them, they were barely growing. Now they are dark green and growing faster.
It got up to 92° here, too..Watering steady. Picked my first crop of Bush peas, not many yet, just starting, but 9 and 10 peas per pod. Happy with that. Got enough to have some with meal, for dinner.
Weather has been in 85° and up all week...water early, and late, and sit by the fan...today has some sea fog, and white clouds so far.....but blue sky behind those...71° at 10:30 A.M...ahhhhh. I bet your family and kids, will Love, Love, love, your tropical pool, paradise....and animals, cats, dogs, tortose, bird, and fish...You are about to become that "Favorite cool Uncle."
I’ve planted bush beans…have gotten nothing but leaves. I think I planted the, too early. I’m an east coast northerner..l hear beans don’t like a lot of heat.
Just got so excited, watching these videos too. Lol
I’ve been watching for years, from the sidelines…🤓
I can't wait until my windmals palms are a quarter that size!
A beautiful palm! I love the “fuzzy” trunk😊❤️
Thank you Jeff. 🌺💚🙃
Great job! What a relief!! I just did a repot project which I have been procrastinating on for the past 6 months 😓 at least you can now enjoy your time away without worrying 😊
Beautiful palm❤
I watched your video from last year's repotting ordeal. You are so funny!
Here in Pensacola FL temp has been 90 to 92 but heat index of 106-109. Plants love all the humidity though. I recently bought a 6’ fox tail I need to put on a new pot came in a 3 gallon pot plus looking for a wind mill palm to add to my collection
Watching this as I stare at my roebelenii that needs to be repotted
Yeah, I’ve noticed that when there’s only holes in the bottom of the pot, I have to put a little rock or something underneath so Air can get to the holes and water can drain out. Otherwise it’s like the holes are basically covered.
Hi Jeff! I'm listening to you say 94° and I wonder what the humidity is. It must feel awful. I've moved from CA to NV (I know it's crazy, but CA just got too expensive), and it's currently 115° here. It's hot. So hot. But it's not humid, thank God. I won't complain.
HI Jeff, this is the first time I've heard you really doubt the new 'zone' numbers, interesting. I'm in the same zone, just very far away from you, and I've been wondering myself. Right now we have been in the high 90's, 100= and above for days and days. Watering is getting pretty challenging (although I have 3 rain barrels, so I have plenty of water just have to bucket it for my young trees and plants on screened porch.) ALSO, fighting lantern flies, do you have them there? Very very invasive, although beautiful.
Do you have any windmill palms in the ground? I live north of Boston I have sabal minor which seems to be doing well it’s wind protected and I have a basjoo that’s doing alright. I have two baby windmill palms in pots I will plant in two years. they are too small to plant
It looks good! How old do you suppose it is?
Hi Jeff, still watching😒😒
Agreed
And PS, you know how (or maybe I don't) most orchid CZcamsrs are women? Have you noticed that most palm CZcamsrs are men? Maybe it's just been my imagination, but now I think that I have figured out why... It's how heavy they are, lol. My husband does not yet realize how he's going to have to help me for himself for repots and move inside time. He's buying all of these palms for me as new house gifts, not realizing that he has just made work for himself, lol. But, I think I'm turning him into a palm guy. He's been asking questions about their care and giving input about where the potted ones will look the nicest. He never did that before
