  • If you’ve been in your local supermarket's soda or soft drink aisle lately, you may have noticed something different - many brands have changed their logos.
Much like cars have done to mark their electrification, soda and soft drink brands are refreshing their logos as they introduce sugar-free versions.
Some changes have been drastic, while others have been rather subtle.
But the common trend is that soda brands with new variants and flavors of their beverages are heralding in, not just new logos, but new design systems that can handle this expansion.
So, what soft drink and soda brands have changed their logos? And how does each design stack up?
Find out in this list of the top 4 soda logo redesigns you may have missed.
    Chapters:
    0:00 - Introduction
    1:10 - 4. Fanta
    4:10 - 3. 7Up
    5:30 - 2. Sprite

Pepsi is probably my favorite rebrand I've ever seen. The 2008 one needed to be replaced in 2008 IMO. This one works so well, everything looks so new, but harkens back to the 80s, and nothing feels overly clean, like they really designed their stuff.

You’d be surprised to know that when Pepsi did product research for the new logo, that many participants drew the logo from the 1980s and 90s more than the 2008 redesign and the only reason I know this is because I was working an award show in which the CMO of PepsiCo showed these drawings during his presentation while accepting the award for “Disruptor of The Year”

Pepsi is just like so many other products nowadays reverting back to their old logo of their glory days but putting a modern spin on it. Even sports teams are doing this like the Milwaukee Brewers ball in glove logo or the SD Padres returning to their original brown color scheme instead of that blue wave (whatever it was). Like Burger King, Pepsi's reworking of its old logo is nostalgic and should work out well.

The new Sprite logo looks like an absolute classic. The old one with the starburst design around it felt like it was trapped by having to call out for attention. We all already know what sprite is, all the logo needs to do is label itself as such in an elegant and distinguished way. The typeface used pulls that off with aplomb.

Man it's nice to have Pepsi actually look cool again. That 2008 redesign looked like a freaking marble lol.
Also, 3:11 that logo is basically what I've seen on Fanta cans all the way up until recently now that they've all been moved over to the new design. Until the most current change, I'd only ever see the 2016/2017 logo design on Fanta cans/bottles not from the U.S.

Earlier this month I was working a marketing award show in NYC and I got to hear from PepsiCo’s CMO Todd Kaplan, the person in charge of the Pepsi rebrand, while he was accepting the final award of the night. In his presentation, he mentioned Pepsi has a storied history that is constantly evolving while also putting the “pop” in culture such as the celebrity campaigns and the Pepsi challenge; and that the brand needed a new identity that would stand out from the competition while honoring its past legacy (which he showed drawings from participants doing product research of the Pepsi logo looking more like the classic Pepsi logos of the past than the 2008 redesign). He also mentioned that the redesign also put in emphasis on the new zero sugar Pepsi, which is why it was shown first in the marketing, while also embarking on a new campaign to promote the new redesign in places such as the MSG Sphere in Las Vegas and the Pepsi 125 Diner pop-up in NYC.
The rebranding work because after the award show ended, I went and bought myself a Pepsi.

The 2008 Pepsi design scheme slowly grew on me. The use of 2D lines to imply 3D shape, the slight pareidolia, and the different swooshes for each flavor encapsulated what pepsi's marketing was about during that era.
The new one is great because it's big, bold, and brings back the classic shape of the logo.

You do a good job breaking these logos down. I do think that sometimes these designers overthink things a bit - the Sprite example stands out of these four.
But, when the change is significant enough for the average consumer not into logos to take notice, the updated look and feel is interesting. The Pepsi change falls into that category. I love how the first impression I had when I saw it last year was: “hey, they brought back the classic logo! Nice!” Once you see them side by side, you realize it’s not exact but it still evokes that nostalgia for me who grew up with the classic wave logo. In that context the tweaks to color and shape here are truly fascinating. Well done, Pepsi! (But sorry…no logo is going to make me drink that slop…I’m from Atlanta and it’s all about Coke…even though my main drink is A&W Zero Sugar! 😂) Good video!

Really like the Pepsi rebrand. I noticed, of course, the font was updated from the 70’s/80’s logos, but I didn’t catch the upward perpendicular angles integrated into the P’s, S, and I. They almost make for an italicized affect on a non-italicized typeface. That causes a sense of movement and emphasis without being obvious.

I feel that 7up is clearly an upgrade now. Pepsi just seems to have reverted a regression! I like the new one for sure though. Sprite feels too bold and in your face now (especially on that aluminium can) -- maybe that's what they intend. Fanta losing the orange-yness feels odd, because we only get orange Fanta in my country (India) -- we always associated Fanta with orange!
