- Car logos are everywhere, from boots to bonnets, grilles to steering wheels, tires to trunks.
Attached to vehicles that people keep for decades at a time, they can’t be changed all that often.
However, recently, it seems they all have.
The “great electrification” has shocked the automotive industry into innovating the technology and design of their vehicles.
And their graphic designers have been hard at work too, reimagining their logos.
Yet, some of them don’t look all that different.
From basic “flattenings” to “subtle but necessary” simplifications, the newest car logo redesigns aim to bring brands that are sometimes more than a hundred years old, into the future.
So, which logos have changed? And how well do they stack up against one another?
Find out the top 13 least obvious car logo redesigns in this list.

Wait, this was a list for the "least obvious" logo designs. Yet the ones at the top were the most obvious??
Came here to make this exact comment but you beat me to it
So.. On a "top 10" video, you start on number 10 and go up all the way to number 1.
If this is a top 10 least obvious. The 10th is quite obvious, the 9th is a bit less obvious and number 1 is an utter surprise, which matches this videos rythm just perfectly fine. Double negation is hard tho, don't take it personal
Surprised that MINI wasn't on the list.
Guess thats just how not obvious it is lol

The most sad thing is that most of the car logos has become black and white! A total lack of originallity that makes all the logos look the same!
I think the black ring in BMWs logo was an integral part of their identity. The logo looks very strange without it. I bet it won't take long until they re-introduce it.
ngl the m logo is best as it has both M and bmws style or something, its cool best thing they came out with
I think BMW should take the BMW lettering from their latest logo and use the design introduced in year 1963 otherwise. That would result in flat logo with high contrast and modern lettering.
The latest variant with grey outline and white fill looks like draft placeholder because it has so low contrast.
It looks like a greybox asset in a game engine that hasn't had its pre-baked lighting applied yet.
The Saab logo isn't a lion. It's a griffin.

I hate this new minimal look. I think the late 20-century colourful logos looked extremely iconic and instantly recognisable.
Kia's logo is very eye catching. Even if they misread it, they'll eventually know.
Honestly, I kinda disagree.
Much like the 30 thousand people in the video who googled for "KN car brand", everytime I see one IRL I'm like "What the hell is that thing ?", I pause for a few seconds before realizing what I'm seeing "Oh yeah right, it's the weird new kia logo - hella stupid idea". It may be modern and sleek but its readability is hella awful. The same goes with every "stylish" font for a lot of car model names (no matter the brand tbh), unless you take 10 seconds to think of what's in front of your eyes you just have no idea what model the car is supposed to be.
The same applies with Dacia who went from a recognizable logo (sadly for them, a synonym of "cheap cars") to something new and modern that looks really nice, but then again, nobody knows what it's supposed to be. It just looks like the middle of two chains attached together. Whereas Skoda, Saab/Scania and Volvo managed to refresh their logo fairly well (Audi too but they could have honestly tried something more than just pure white).
I don't know if I'm just hating mostly everything new I see, but as a french guy I also find both the Peugeot and Renault logo REALLY awful. The 1998-2002 peugeot logo ( 19:10 ) looks marvelous, just like the 1992-2004 renault logo (17:53) albeit being kinda outdated. They should have tried to modernize these two instead of trying nonsensical stuff. The current Peugeot lineup isn't "sporty" by any mean, and Renault is just trying to pretend they're going full electric with such a logo when it isn't even the case yet, despite releasing "modernized" variants of old cars for the wrong reasons. (For example, the new R5 : People loved the old one because it was small and affordable, while the new one is comparable to any regular 20/25k+€ compact car. Wtf Renault ? You're banking on nostalgia more than anything else, that's a dumb move)
I really like the new Citroen logo however ! I have no idea how they're gonna implement this oval shape without making it looking weird on their next car models, but it looks really nice.
I know but intentionally missread it
@@Tideroo Wow, that has to be the biggest yap session I've ever seen.

People who read it as KN might as well learn what Ns look like.
I recently had exactly the same Kia problem. A dealership with the new logo opened, but at this point it wasn't obvious that it has something to do with cars. I looked at the logo for an eternity and couldn't figure out who or what KИ is...
so this might be a huge reach, but КИ are cyrillic letters: KI which in german means "künstliche intelligenz" or the same as AI in english "artificial intelligence"
@@mateasaraginov1890 I doubt that they planned that. Multi language and multi writing system is a bit too much.
as i said, my comment was a huge reach 😂
Renault's 1992-2004 was so creative yet simple I like it the most
The 15-21 was very similar just chrome but now it’s the same simplified bullshit
before i associated renault cars with just the twingo basically a cheap thing that will get you around, the new logo makes me think of renault as more quality ngl. Same goes for the peugeot one :)
The killer argument for logo redesign and oversimplification is legibility in small formats and digital platforms. Peugeot's new logo looks nice esthetically but is much more complex than the standing lion of the recent decades. 🤯
Saw a mistake at 2:56 where it said "2020" instead of "1920", but great video nonetheless

Fantastic video, super cool stuff to learn about. But my word with KIA, since day one all I can see is K&N, the filter company.
I discovered your channel yesterday and as a graphic design student whose very into logo design I’m already loving your videos, they are simple and amazing🔥
We don't talk about Volkswagen's 1939 design 🤣😳
I find your videos relaxing and very easy to understand 😌
Yes, 100 % true to me! 🎉
Top notch presentation. The videos are thoughtful, deliberate and well edited. Everything down to the amount of time a logo is shown is so well executed. I don’t know what this gentleman does for a living, but I would love someone like this on my team.
Really upset that u missed the opportunity to mention how GMs new “electric inspired” logo actually looks like a gas nozzle. lol
Wait really ? :o must google !

Volvo used to solve the branding on their vehicles by putting the iron mark inside a square frame and did the diagonal line through the opposite diagonal corners of the square.
19:52 That first logo is of Proton, a Malaysian car brand which is very proud of its tiger logo. Tigers are extremely important in culture here and signify strength and prowess, hence its use in government seals, notable sports teams, car logos, and more. I loved this video in both form and delivery, so I just wanted to point that out without the usual CZcams comment rhetoric. Thank you so much for putting this excellent examination together!
KIA redesign was a stroke of genius
anyone else feel like all the new logos are just downgrades of the ones before? (some exceptions apply) but like bmw, vw, and volvo is such a down grade it's just sad
agree, i think its a bias at least for me as i grew up seeing the older logos everyday, but yeah the VW, BMW, and Volvo logos are downgrades if you ask me, VW being the least bad of them
agreed, i also mentioned how only a few like Peugeot had a glow Up.
really love your style of presenting and the way you were analysing the new logos. Mega clean! Keep this up:)
VW had strong brand identity in their logo back in the 30s sheeesh sometimes I forgot about those kind of things
One thing you could've mentioned is that lots of these brands tend to belong to the same group: Skoda, Volkswagen and Audi are in the same group, as are Peugeot and Citroën, for example.
It's sad that all logos are losing their color, especially Alfa Romeo's. They look neat, but sterile, now; with no soul to them.
4:29 That Š of yours is really impressive! 👏
It just annoys me a little when he had that much attention on pronouncing Škoda right, but messed up with Volkswagen...
@@pallemanden: and Citroen and Peugeot
I don't think car makers put their logos on tyres, wheels, yes.
Why is the called Top least obvious, when rank #1 is the most obvious?
honestly, i really like the new peugeot logo i think it makes the brand more up to date with the design and the future of it. For me, the old logo looked old and made the cars look cheap. (it's only my opinion)
I think it's literally the opposite, the new Peugeot logo looks like something you'd find as a stock logo in like a logo maker. Just very basic and non recognizable, the old one is recognizable and clean.
As you mentioned with the Ford Logo - I would LOVE to see you make a ‘best unused logos’ video !
I’m subscribed now. Love the content and the voice!
I really like the video! Please do a part two! You forgot Lancias new Logo!
I hate Kia redesign, bc all russians, include me see "КИ"(pronounced as "Ki"), not "КИА" as it should say... I mean its literally КИ, not KN, its incredibly easy to misread....
полностью согласен.
As a Greek I read "ΚΙΛ" which is KIL. I hate these type of designs
Can’t wait for this channel to blow up 🙌 Great work
The Peugeot redesign is fucking killer. And the Renault logo looks even better than before.
Such a quality video experience, love to see what's coming. New subscriber for sure, are you planning on more car videos?
All the information is pretty accurate, but I also have to say that the quality of the video is one of the best. People always talk about the topic, but most of the time they forget about the editing and filming process.
But to me, I always enjoy what’s behind it. Congrats to the quality of your content!
Your videos are awesome!
I really like the new KIA logo. The fact that it shows only in one place outside of the car also made me more curious when I first spotted in the wild.
You got the years wrong for the Rolls Royce Spirit Logo original use. You said 1920, but the screen shows 2020.
As someone who used to work for a print company with Fortune 100 clientele, I can tell you that they would absolutely obsess over small details like the gradient in a shaded or 3D-type logo. Some companies would even send a marketing rep to our print facility to physically sign off on pre-production samples and then monitor our QC during the print run. So to me it's not surprising to see them go to flatter, more monotone logos that are easier and cheaper to reproduce ("Here's our logo line art, use Pantone 294 for this part and 185 for that part, and send us our finished marketing pamphlets and a bill when you're done.")
I bet it won't be long though before trends start to swing back the other way as companies move to make their logos "stand out" more from their competitors' flat logos.
Another great video !
love ur videos!!
You missed Lincoln. In 2013 they started to implement a new star logo. The new logo removed the points off the star and rounded out the edges. I really like the change. I never cared much for the old style, I always thought it looked old. The rounded edges and lack of points makes the logo appear more youthful and simplified which is probably what they were going for.
Nice stuff. The one that gets me is the Roundification of the Vauxhall badge. It got a curved staff/flagpole🙃
I know a lot of comments say they hate the KIA redesign, but I think it is the best one in this list when you consider their brand image and design changes they are undertaking from a reliable but boring asian car company, to a sleek, cool, sporty car company. The old logo was so boring, the new one is sharp and different - in my opinion, in a good way.
it was least obvious to me that the 'tyre' in the intro was, in fact, a wheel.
@Dom Hennequin. Thank you for your work on this YT video. You may already know this. Apparently the blue background on the “old” VW logo is a colour that appears on the flag/banner/emblem of the state of Lower Saxony in Germany. The parent factory at Wolfsburg is in this region. (A German business contact told me this). And the blue and white “quarters” on the BMW logo are supposed to represent an aircraft propeller. Apparently, BMW started out building engines for aircraft. So thatvpart of the logo continues that part of the company history. Stay safe and well.
Love this guy's pronunciation
"Citrhon"
"Runa"
"Peuschout"
8:12 I have a VW Jetta, and actually quite like their in-car software. Porsche, though...
i think the peugeot logo looks fantastic on their newer cars. love it
Looks like they all changed from barbecue logos to microwave ovens logos. If you get what i mean...😂
Peugeot hat the biggest glow up, second one is Renault in my opinion. not too minimalistic and still classic. love them
I’ve seen the new Ford logo on vehicles in real life and it looks so much better than on screens. The blue is darker and the lettering is in white which makes it pop more and look richer. The Peugeot badge looks so much better than the old one too.
it's interesting to see how you try to pronounce some names in the original language like citroën and skoda, but pronounce volkswagen in the most english way ever hahaha
great video!
Great video, i thought i was the only person obsessed with logos LOL. Im going to do a similar video on tech companies that changed their logos to boring plain crap. LOL
Great video. You speak my mind on pretty much all of them. I find it ironical that so many companies turn to the past to tackle the challenge of the electric revolution. In contrast to Tesla's self-confident identity, all these retro logos shout: "I'm so scared of the future! 😨I have no clue what to do now, I want to go back to the good old days!". It's not even just the logos - the cars themselves are retro (e.g. Renault 5, Renault 4, Renault Twingo revivals). imo, radical logo changes are a sign of brand weakness because a really iconic logo cannot be changed (e.g. VW, Mercedes, Audi).
Thanks!
The first time I saw the new Kia logo, I legit read it as KVI. I still can't unsee it that way.
Superb video. However, you're incorrect about Peugeot: it's their 1960-1968 logo, which is pretty much the same, albeit with a more intricate lion, no black background and dark blue color for the lettering, drawing, etc.
THis guys voice is soo soothing
did everyone just forget which direction an 'N' faces?
The new Kia logo was definitely Trent Reznor’s most interesting side project.
The KIA logo is indeed a flop. When a KIA model is white, you can barely see the logo
My favorite KIA logo is the ellipse with the K in it.
they could add a small black outline to the text and add spacing to make it look less like "KN"
As someone that went from a Ford to a Nissan I gotta say that I love the new design of the logo. Of course the old logo is still on the interior which I don’t mind at all
You make good videos. But I watch them on 1.5x speed lol
14:31 Sorry but this reminds me of the Durex logo, but it is so clean. That’s unfortunate !
Renault's logo is the best redesign by far.
agreed!
Peugeot's logo redesign is better
to be honest I really do like the Škoda redesign. The issue I see with it and what has been communicated by dealers is the fact that they had several redesigns in rapid succession now to the point where you have 2-2.5 generations of cars on the road now with vastly different branding (rare: green winged arrow, common: fully chrome winged arrow, slightly fewer: just the word Škoda on the tailgate.) as well as marketing material (flyers, brochures etc) that had become out of date basically the day it was ordered.
But I still really like the new design. Yes the green is different but - despite me never not liking the old one - much more pleasant. And the new Wordmark is just ace. more modern, but still respecting their heritage as well as origin.
Also, in regards to VW: This is basicaly the Version that was installed on the cars in the past, like the original beetle or bus. So it is a blast to the past in some regards
not gonna lie, I like the new Peugeot. much more dynamic and gets rid of the Peugeot owner image we all know and Top Gear had visualized. The problem I have is, that the image they try to sell now is too Cupra like. But Cupras literally look like Seats again... These three are a mess for me. I can differentiate them but the marketing design language similarity between Peugeot and Cupra, followed by the car design language similarities between Seat and Cupra don't make any of them standing out for me.
not a massive fan of the Kia logo though, but neither am I of their cars.... so... Regardless, I think Kia kind of looked at Sony's Vaio line. But Vaio did it better. There was the motivation. VA were a wave representing analog technology and IO were the digital part so the logo described the technology's trip from "old fashioned" analog to new and modern digital....
Kia looks like someone's signature, a few identical squiggle up and down.
The skoda chrome wing contrasting with the black background was my favourite logo. Skoda imo can’t pull off the letters on a tailgate look. A few friends own cars with the redesigned logos and it just looks like it’s trying too hard, almost too proud to show it’s a skoda. In contrast, The chrome wing looks elegant and understated.
@@Skiman__ I agree. didn't like it with volvo back in the time already....
@@Skiman__ I agree. I didn't like just the letters on the back when Volvo did it ages ago, don't like it now.
As far as i heard Škoda decided to let go of the logo on their cars and use just the text, not really a fan but what do i know about their branding point of view
Dacia should have been on the list
I feel like I need to watch this video in 1.5x just to get through it. The intro was twice as long as it needed to be.
Your voice is great!
Where you say at the start about logo locations, you mention tyres. Surely you mean wheels?
Interesting that you didn't add Dacia to the list.
This should have been a 90-second video
Paul Rand Ford logo reminds me of a specific condom brand lol
Every one looks like an downgrade in quality. Eeveeerryyyooonneee.
If 3D like logos are a thing of the past, and the new design world is bicolor and flat, while the tarjet is to represent electrification, maybe logos need more light. A subtle color change from side to side, to make them subtle look more real.
what do Rolls-Royce and Škoda have in common? Both are brands that are nowadays used by different companies. While RR has sold its car brand to BMW, Škoda sold its car business (green logo) to VW, Škoda transportation uses a similar logo in blue.
what about dacia
This video is so satisfying
You can change the likes of Nissan and Kia all you want, but I wouldn’t want the heritage based logos to change..
At 2:52, is the year range stated as 1911-2020 supposed to be like that?
No, its a mistake.
kia needed it and it was brilliant. they are no longer looked at the way they used to be everyone wants one now at least in america
This guy has a very soothing voice. He should do mindfulness content!
It sounded like you were saying the word Persia
Caveat about Kia - the oval was to align with Ford, as they were the supplier for some Ford cars, lol.
19:50 Proton use Tiger instead of Lion
I agree with your opinion on the Skoda badge. Especially when you consider the current state of EVs. Now, I don't know how EVs are doing over in the UK and Europe, but here in the US, EVs aren't doing too hot. It all simply comes down to the lack of infrastructure and the fact that almost 9 times out of 10 these charging stations hardly function the way they're supposed to. Those are the two big problems currently, but there are other ones as well. But I don't want to delve too far into that rabbit hole. xD
No.4 - the brand is pronounced "sitroEn" (last syllable stressed)? *not* "sitron"! This is the reason why Ye Double Dotte Accent above the "e" is there.
I feel like all car companies change their logos so that it was easy for children to draw them. I think it's a temporary change, maybe for a few years or so. Because cars are starting to look the same and it feels stagnant.
French speaker searching for the lemons he’s speaking about! 😅
12 of these are either worse than before or a mere side step, but Citroën's is genuinely vastly improved
i feel like Renault kind of missed an opportunity there with that 1919 logo
When I do get a new audi, just know I will scrape the logo no matter how hard it is in place, and swap it out for the old chrome one.
Don’t worry nobody likes the white logos they themselves are putting chrome logos on cars 😂. But yeah the chrome ones feel so satisfying
0:02. That’s not a tyre. That’s a wheel.
