- My first shop tour! I've completely overhauled my two-car garage to accommodate both my shop space AND my family storage space, which until now has always been a struggle. Hopefully this gives some of you some ideas on how to upgrade your own work space, whether in a garage or not. I think my thoughtful approach to the traditional French cleat system will help a few folks out as well.

You joke when you say " my leaning bench " I have a vise, on a bench, at a door........That's my leaning vise. Many great Ideas that I will incorporate in my current reorganization of my shop. Thank you.
This is by far the best use of French cleats I have seen. I have always liked the idea but wasn't sold on the practicality of it. I think this may have changed my mind.
Nice use of space also.
Thank you! I felt the same way until I started thinking a little outside the box.
Best use of French cleats I ever seen thanks for sharing it
I had to laugh at the ending about playing with the lights. A while back I was moving and it was hot so I had the air on and cranked down. Like I said, I was moving, so naturally the doors were wide open also. My mom was helping us move and she kept shutting the air off because the doors were open. I got a little upset and asked her why she was doing that. She said, "Well, you're just wasting electricity by running the air with the doors open." My response was simply, "Remember when I was a kid you said that when I get my own house I can run the air with the doors open, but I can't do it in your house? Well, this is my house, I'm running the air with the doors open." She punched me. LoL! Yeah, my mom is feisty like that. Hahahaha!
Thank you for the shop tour. I too and working out of a 2 car garage and sharing it with storage. The more I clean it out the more my wife finds to store there. LoL Your set up gave me some good ideas.
The bottle opener is what real wood workers have on their bench... so glad to see it!
Well you sure inspire me, I am a UK viewer and I gave you thumbs up, subscribed and rang the bell. I am retired from working for a living, so now it's play time and I just love working in my shed. worked in some great shops but now I'm confined to about a quarter size to what you have. Every single storage issue you have solved has given me solutions to problems I face every day, I have to cart things outside to get room to work inside. As a result I have more awnings than a field of weekend campers. Thanks for sharing. It reminds me of an old saying I used to have, " in order to learn first you must teach". I taught a couple of apprentices and it feels good that you are teaching me. By the way I am 66 years old and more enthusiastic about wood work than I have ever been, and your lessons make that so. Thank you very much.
Wow, what a treasure trove of cool tips, tricks and hacks!
The cleat system around the benches is a great idea. Especially like the hardware bins and sanding wall. 👍😎🇦🇺
My shop I have just expanded. It was so small I had stuff on top of stuff and couldn't keep it organized no matter what I did. So with this new addition I started searching all the sites that talked about French cleats and organizing. Yours helped me the most because of the variety of challenges that you faced with walls, windows etc. Your vid made good sense. Last note. You don't talk too much I can leave the volume up and don't have to listen to a bunch of funky music.
Excellent you did a great job of organizing a workshop without a single $60 Festool storage box😎. And not once did you make a sales pitch for a $1700 circular saw. Thanks for showing what will help a lot of us.
Thanks! I really appreciate that!
That was exactly my thought. Sub'd.
Not only did you expand my own ideas, concerning french cleats, but you telling your background of getting there, is priceless to me. In 6 to 12 month i am starting building my own shop and your video sort of polished some of my ideas and added quite a few. Especially the kabinet with paint and what not, inspired me. Thank you for your very informative videos, i always enjoy them.
Thought the paint and finishing product holder is brilliant idea ! Off to the shop I go to build one 😎
SERIOUSLY!!! Knocked it out of the park with that idea
I, like others, were not sold on the french cleat idea until I saw your video. Great job mate! I think I will be using the idea in my workshop as well. I can now see many uses within my workshop for them. The plastic wall separator is also a great idea as I share my shop (2 car garage) with storage as well. Well done and great video!
I know this was 4 years ago, but it’s loaded with brilliant ideas! The magnetic box for the back of the bandsaw table is great, and your paint/stain/solvent storage idea is genius! The crown jewel for me was putting a vise on the dresser! Might have to add one in our bedroom! Ha! Thanks!
I'm researching French cleat systems. You've obviously given a lot of thought to your system, which means I now don't have to think as much. Thanks for that. Definitely gonna steal your put-a-cleat-on-each-workstation idea, along with designing with flat bottoms.
I looked at the run time and thought Ono 😤 but there's always fast forward, WOW I watched every bit I think its the best shop tour I've seen in a very long time everything explained very well.
I've been a carpenter and joiner in England for forty two years and it's fantastic to see somebody full of enthusiasm and ideas and put it over so well, I've subscribed and I'm ill catch up on all your previous vids 🇬🇧🇺🇸👍
Such an awesome comment! Thanks so much for this and thanks for watching and subscribing!! Cheers!
I didn’t even notice the run time until you mentioned it. Wow! Time flies when you’re having fun
Great way of working around the limitations of your garage.I also enjoyed your thought process in the various improvements.
NO! THANK YOU! Great video.. I am in the process of cleaning my little disorganized shop, you have giving me some great ideas and inspired me to get off my ass and just go out and do it. The french cleats idea is awesome.
Ingenuity at it's finest.
You took the French cleat system to a whole 'nother level. I especially love how you integrated it on your assembly table. The Paulk-style table allows you to keep things off your work surface, but it has the potential for being a catch-all area and quickly becoming cluttered if you're not one to stay on top of things. Your system keeps things organized and movable and still within reach. It's just brilliant.
You have given me inspiration as I start to create my own woodworking shop in my "corner" of our garage.
I always had the same thought about the pull-style bench which its why I never made one myself. That and cleaning inside of it. Thanks for watching. I'm glad you got some useful ideas!
Lots of great ideas from your setup man, mainly the french cleats on the work bench and stain/spray rack. Working on getting a lot of my stuff organized and will defiantly be stealing a few ideas! Thanks for the great video!
love the french cleats and how you put it all together . Gives me a lot of ideas for my shop
Love your set up. Always find joy in the simple but works concepts. Simple things to make me rethink my layout. Thank you for nice video's also.
I use the cleat system on one wall above the workbench. I like that you use the system everywhere. You have lots of good ideas for the cleats.
This is so awesome to see what you have and the thought that went behind why it is the way it is. Lots of ideas that I will soon apply to my own shop build.
I have seen about 1,000 videos showing the French cheat system and yours is one of the better ones out there, I really like how well you utilized the space you have and made it effective. Maybe after another 1,000 videos I will get it through my head that French cleats are the way to go and Ill actually do this myself. The cleats on your work surfaces is a great idea, move what you need to work closer then move it back when you are finished. Great stuff.
I appreciate that. I feel like they can be a little much, and I was worried that I had done just that myself. But honestly I can't think of a less expensive and more easily adaptable solution for storage.
You do truly inspire, my friend! SUPERLIKE the multi-use bins with flat bottoms attaching to assembly table! I'm working on my first french cleat system and now know I'll incorporate some of your fantastic ideas for moving versatile bins onto multiple cleat locations!! Great example of (as Adam Savage calls it) First Order Retrievability. SUBSCRIBED!!
Hey thanks a ton! I really appreciate the kind words! I use and rearrange them all the time so it definitely has worked out.
Great shop. Thanks for the idea for French cleats all around the shop and the handy movable trays and hangers. I'm gong to have to start working on that in my shop. And I'm a lefty too.
Haha! Funny how that never get's brought up!
Wow! stumbled across your video and I have been struggling with how to fix my shop. Great video!!
Jodi man, I can't believe I didn't find your channel to last week. I've been watching all your videos .this one was really good, they're all good. Thank you for taking the time to show us things. I really appreciate your hard work and effort.
I've watched more shop tour vids than I care to admit, but you have some cool ideas I've never seen before. Nice work!!
I just started converting my small, small shop to French Cleat system, so I can relate. My planner is the same set up and model of planner. I have two 10 by 10 sheds and a patio with two work tables. Love the tour.
Nice shop and great use of space. Hope you don't mind but I am going to borrow your French cleat idea at the work stations. I am actually building a new mobile cart/assembly station for my saw stop and the idea for the moveable storage modules is a perfect fit for my space. Thanks again!!! Mike
So many great ideas!! Thanks for making this video. I really love the way you have utilized the French cleats. Also, I’ve been scratching my head wondering what to do with all of my paint products. Now I know. I really like your paint cabinet. This is a very inspirational video! Great job!!
Hello Jody, thanks for the tour. I like what you have done in your garage. Your garage seems way bigger than what I have! You have organized your shop very well and obviously the wheels on stands helps a great deal. I will be using some of the ideas you have shown for sure. Thanks
Fantastic setup! I get 1/2 of a 2-car garage for my shop. Still in a state of chaos. Your system provides many storage ideas. Thanks man!
I love your system on here and I have gotten some good ideas on how to better utilize my 2 car garage shop.
Your video is very personable and you don’t seem awkward talking to the camera. I actually found myself subconsciously nodding to the tv screen while you were showing me around your shop.
Thanks !
I love comments like these. Thank you!
Great minds think alike - many aspects of your shop are already in mine. Especially everything on wheels. That wall cabinet is outstanding!
You’ve done a great job setting up your shop. I enjoyed seeing your ideas, and I am inspired to improve mine. Thanks for taking the time and providing the details. I really like your French cleat system. i need to do this! Thank you!! I subscribed!
Glad i ran across this. Definitely have some ideas now my shop in the making. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Good day to you friend.
LOVED(!!!!) the idea of placing cleats all over the shop! great thinking!
I love French cleats too. I've been making prototypes for the new setup after we move. It is going to be cleat city in there. I even made some for screws and such with little plexi windows in the front. I cut off the label from the box and put it behind the little window. Works great. Nice job on the shop.
That's a really good idea!
you probably dont care but if you're bored like me atm you can watch all the latest movies and series on InstaFlixxer. Been watching with my girlfriend lately xD
@Kairo Malachi yea, have been watching on instaflixxer for since december myself :D
@Kairo Malachi Yup, I've been using instaflixxer for months myself :)
All this time I don't know how I've missed your channel and especially this video. I really appreciate a lot of your ideas. Thanks (belated) for the video!
I really like the use of the cleat system on the benches. I will definitely be using the workbench cleat system in my next workbench build. Thanks for sharing really appreciated.
Cleats everywhere is great! Zip wall was great too. My wife will thank you
Really nice walk thru on usefulness of French cleat system, thanks. Something def look to adopt.
You're shop is awesome. Great use of the french cleats all over the place. Definitely giving me some inspiration to get more organized.
Thank you, Earl! They are such a great space saver and really help me when it comes to keeping things neat and tidy.
sorry i had to pause :59 in ... i did the same thing in my garage! i have a small space heater in the other side with storage racks i built to house all the totes and my small music studio. keeps the heat in the one side and the dust out. i used magnets and duct tape to create a door that snaps shut behind me. also hung a piece of plywood on hinges to conceal my seasonal decor and have poster/art hanging space. lift the door twice a year to get to those totes. love your vids, glad i subscribed. i dare to say, great minds think alike, im just getting into this woodworking passion and youve truly given me some excellent tips to connect my visions with my toolset.
Super inspirational! I look forward to going to the shop to get it organized! I’m amazed by your creativity.
Excellent video. Aside from having many useful ideas, this is well edited with great production value. I enjoyed it and learned a lot. Thanks.
Wow I’m glad I stumbled onto this vid. You cracked me up laying on the floor. I literally just picked everything off my garage floor. Don’t remember how long it’s been since I saw it. The workbench is getting organized now. You can see about 80% of it. Anyway lots of great ideas. Will be incorporating a lot of them as I get the shop organized. Thanks for posting. Video well done. Look forward to checking out more of your vids.
Thanks so much for watching! A clean, organized shop makes for happy work right?
Very nice set up. Your assembly table and the elements of it are really well thought out.
this tour was FULL of great ideas. especially love the solvent cabinet and dual chop box set up . good stuff.
That cabinet is one of my favorite things now. Thanks for watching!
I already use the French system but I love your stain cabinet idea! Floor space is a premium for my 2 car garage / wood shop and I love the idea of shelves that don't touch the floor or protrude to far out into the shop space. I'm totally stealing that idea. Great video. You just earned a new subscriber.
Well thanks a ton! Glad you got some ideas out of it. Thanks for watching!
That plastic wall system seems like such a good idea for my basement shop. Glad I watched this.
Absolutely the best thing I ever did! Our storage stuff was covered in sawdust and soot and it was kind of sad.
@@InspireWoodcraft everything that comes up from the basement is covered in a fine layer of sawdust. It's... Annoying.
Exactly! And in the last three or so weeks that it’s been up we’ve had ZERO issues. It sounds silly but it’s been life changing. The way I have it set up, although a little bit inconvenient for me personally, let’s whoever needs typical garage stuff come and go like normal without even going into the shop. It’s really like two different rooms.
Now I am inspired! Thanks for sharing your ideas. They are clever.
The idea of having French cleats in various areas around the shop is genius, but just seems so obvious now. I love it! It would be so handy to grab the holders for your drill, drill bit, and screws and hook them to the side of your bench...or have a holder for safety equipment you could move between stations...the options are unlimited. It gives full flexibility to customize a work area based on the current project.
Great small shop. I’m working from a garage as well. I have a similar set up for my lights. I have my radio on one as well. I love the idea of cleats at your work station, I’ll be borrowing that idea. Thanks for sharing!
You took the French cleat idea to a whole other level! Everybody just used it for storing stuff on a wall but you integrated the modularity of it into your work process...brilliant! Judging from all the positive comments about it, I think you may have started something.
Ha! Yeah I think you might be right.
Great video. I store all my cordless drills (8) on a shelf facing out preloaded with a mix of drills, screwdriver bits etc. that way I can see what I need and pick it right up. 👍
I realy like the french cleath solutions you have to get everything out of your way....Thanks for the tips
I really like how you laid everything out. Been thinking about making some changes to my garage workshop
Best cleat accessories I've seen yet! Super inspired!
Awesome! You’ve given me so many ideas that compliment what I’m already doing. Can’t wait to show this video to my wife! Thank you for sharing!
That's AWESOME! I'm really glad you got some good ideas from it.
simple and elegant solutions, mate. Feelin' inspired.
I like the use of the French cleat system on the side of the workbench . . . I have always liked the French cleat system, but have only seen it on walls. Great ideas in this video ! I am going to subscribe, so keep the videos coming ! Thanks !
Creative use of your workspace, really like the French cleat system
Very nice. I love the way that you use French cleats here, there, and everywhere, Also a smart idea for doubling up your wall shelf with a hinged swing out. Thanks!
Thanks for watching! Yeah both the paint cabinet and the cleats have been super beneficial thus far!
That paint storage shelving is a sweet setup!! Great job
Dude, nicely done! I really dig how much thought you put into your shop layout and how things are organized. You basically just walked through the exact reason for my CZcams channel! Keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing more from your channel. Subbed!
Best shop tour video I have ever seen, GREAT JOB! You have inspired me with so many, many of your ideas, thank you. I can now use a few of the ideas to help better organize my work space, been scratching my head on how to for a long time, you made it simple for me to get started. Again thanks! Terry
I really appreciate that, Terry! Thanks for watching and the awesome comment!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Getting ready to start my own shop set up and I got some good ideas from you.
That's awesome! Thanks for watching and good luck!
I have been surfing you tube woodworking videos frequently over the past year or so. I got more good ideas from this one video then I have from any other ten videos! And what’s even better is the tools in your shop don’t look all that much different then those in my shop. That means a lot!
I have liked and subscribed.👍👍👍
I really appreciate this comment! Thanks a ton!
Awesome video. Gonna need an updated shop tour soon!
The absolute most important tool in every shop...the bottle opener. ;-)
Your work bench has great storage! Love this idea !
Band saw magnet box is brilliant
Wow! So many great ideas! I got some really great ideas here. Thank you!!!!
Love shop tours, especially ones that aren't showrooms!!! Great ideas and solutions!
I just found this video and it is great. I have played around in my garage for over 20 years (I say played because I don't really consider myself a true woodworker). As far as your issue with electrical plugs for your tools, when I first got my stationary tools. I installed plug outlets on my bigger tools. These outlets are fed from the plug feeding power to the machine. This allowed me to "daisy chain" all my tools together so I have power available at any time. It also made plugs available close for when I want to run a saw or router. You just have to remember to only have the tool you are using running to keep the draw from exceeding the wall outlet you are feeding the tools from. Works fine for me, thought I would suggest.
You know I thought about doing something like that because the bandsaw has an outlet on it already and the radial arm saw has to be plugged in with its own separate switch anyway. Great idea that I actually forgot about! Thanks!
Lots of great ideas. Thanks for the future project ideas.
Ingenious design for the french cleat system
So Inspiring, I own a sign company and you sir are a genius! Thanks for sharing man!
Nice shop/home storage ! I don't have a real shop yet.. More of a jumbled mess that I can occasionally find what I need an do tiny jobs.. I have a huge magnet collection.. I like how clean everything is. It must really help inspire creativity. Nice work!
Yes!!! That is a great use of the French cleat system.
This has totally inspired me to try a similar idea in my small workshop. Thank you.
Your work area looks good. It looks like a lot of thought went into every single detail to each area. This video gave me some ideas for my garage. Thanks.
AWESOME! Thanks so much for watching!
EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT!!! VERY WELL THOUGHT OUT!!! THANKS SO MUCH,!!
I will definitely incorporate many of your ideas into my shop!!
Another real "CRAFTSMAN" for sure. This guy is a genius and doesn't even know it. Great ideas. I love the paint and stain cabinet, but I have issues storing that stuff in my garage with the temps fluctuating so much.
Kind of nice, in that I have the same table saw, same jointer, but a Rigid planer and miter saw. My son and I work in our detached garage, but only in warmer seasons here in Michigan. I will be purchasing the sander, I think in the spring. Thanks for helping me to feel like I have some of the same items others woodworkers have!
What a great comment. Thanks!
Wow! U have a Fantastic Work Shop! Great lay out!
Well thank you!
Thanks for sharing that. I am interested in buildingmy own and have procrastinated for a long time. I just got inspired. Thanks.
Great presentation Cody every day is a school day
Nice job brother, I'm a huge fan of the french cleat system. I've been trying to find someone who has implemented the the idea well. I love that all your cleat mounting accessories will sit flat on a table. Great video! Mucho Grass!
By the way, what angle are you using to rip your cleats?
Thanks for watching, my friend! I ripped them all at 45 degrees to keep it simple.
That K5 cleat is brilliant, thanks, this video is a goldmine for me for ideas :)
Great Job.... offered alot of ideas; I'm getting ready to rehab 1/2 of my garage as a small workshop and this has helped me a lot. I love the french cleat idea but will need to keep mine relatively small since I don't have a table saw - just a 12" miter saw and circular saw.
Mine’s pretty small as well. It just depends on where you mount them. In my case, I’ve only screwed them to certain areas, in the event that it doesn’t make sense to have them, I can easily take them off. The wall area is glued and screwed, as it’s a dedicated area.
Great stuff looking forward to seeing more stuff from you
Great vid, subbed and a like. Paint and finish cabinet is something I’m going to implement and putting my vac on a remote. Genius!
I gotta make that cabinet for my stains etc. Love the design.
Love that paint storage idea👍🏻
Well, this is one sweet tour of a shop. Loving it and your french cleat setup. I must also say... that paint storage system is one heck of a great idea!!! Fellow Tuber here. The wood burning video brought me in and this one made me subscribe. You do some nice work! Looking forward to watching all your vids.
I'm definitely going to steal that whiskey shelf idea!
