In the show he won by a slim margin.
In the books though, Jon snow won by an overwhelming majority. After many rounds of voting with the forerunners being Janos Slynt of Castle Black, Ser Denys Mallister of Eastwatch, and Cotter Pyke of Shadow Tower, nobody seemed to have a clear majority, however Janos Slynt seemed to be gaining ground after every round of voting. To prevent Slynt from becoming the Lord Commander, Samwell Tarly convinced Cotter Pyke and Denys Mallister's men to cast their votes to Jon Snow and break the deadlock, since both were not too fond of Slynt either, both knew that their vote share was slowly slipping away, and they both would eventually lose out to Slynt. They however saw a common ground in Jon. Their combined vote shares saw Jon win easily by a thick margin in the next round of voting. And thus, Jon Snow, the 16 year old bastard by Ned Stark, ended up becoming the 998th Lord Commander of the Night's Watch.

We are currently having presidential elections in Czech republic, second round between two candidates.
One is a retired army general, hero who led his men on voluntary misson to save French soldiers in 90s on Balkans, respectful member of NATO institutions and quite chilled and skilled diplomat with tons of experience.
His opponent is agricultural magnate, a billionare, that doesn´t know common things from even a 5th grade of elementary school, though instead of humble saying "I don´t know" he attacks everyone with counterquestions and discussions fauls, refusing to answer and bringing instead unrelated topics. A guy, who through massive PR campaign gotten into politics and currently profits generally from poorest and socially disadvantages people to be voted for - all thanks to massive populism using lies and clamining he works for people, while at the same time people work in his companies at minimum wage and at bad conditions barely making up standards done by law.
It you would have though that the billionare stands no chance, you might be surprised that first round they were tied in range of statistic mistake (though there was a choice from 8 people there). Second roung coming this weekend and what ser Alliser did was dirty, but at least in boundaries. Our oligarch candidate spits shiet wherever he goes, trying anything to disgust as many democratic voters to not go vote in second round while at the same time does his best to appeal to more radical wings. This even lead to a diplomatic faux paux, because there is a war next to NATO´s border and this fukker even told he wouldn´t order our troops to come to help of our neighboring country in case they needed, all because he wants to appeal as "anti war" and "pacifist" to distinguish from former army general.
I hope that "our Jon Snow" will win here, too, because dirties campaing has never been seen before in my country. Especially when it is running from only one side, the generel´s side plays more positive ways.

when your jon snow, and you go and meet the wildlings, and not only is this bravery beyond compare, and especially as since the dawn of time everyone in the north has no doubt been telling everyone about how these savage people can never be tamed or approached if you value your life, and yet not only did jon snow meet them and find a place among them, and all without losing his head from his body, he also fell in love with one of them. and if you too are in the presence of a red headed she devil who both wants to kill you, and take you to her bed, and yet you survive, and this is no doubt another reason why jon snow is a great man, and would be the only choice to be the next lord commander.

Sam manipulated the vote pretty hard in the book. They had voted for 10 days in a row and nobody had gotten 2/3 of the vote (the amount needed to win) and Stannis told them they were being forced to vote that night once and for all. Sam went the day before and lied to both the men who were in the lead (there were 4 real contenders) and told them that Stannis was going to support their rival (each other) if they didn’t get 2/3s that day and that they could pull their support to Jon instead. He also trained all the ravens to say “Snow” like Lord commander Mormonts raven used to and put one in the kettle which was being used to count the votes. When they took the top off of the kettle, it landed on Jon’s shoulder and squawked snow a bunch of times kinda as a seal of legitimacy.
All in all it was politicking as politicking tends to be, but it definitely involved a lot of subversion and lying unlike the show where he was elected more off of his full merit for the position
