100% agree with this list. They each have something different to offer fans, but Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks are the ones I enjoy the most
I'd say they are also the most consistent
I concur.
I would place Picard over Discovery, otherwise agree.
I like Prodigy too. As they say they are managing to do their own thing while being Trek.
@@robert_bbiii - I agree with that - Prodigy holds the very best values of Starfleet and challenges them in ways that could not have been predicted.
It's clever and made with love - plus we get Janeway :D
I hope they don't give up on Short Trek. It can be the anthology series we wanted. Give writers and directors who are fans a chance to make an episode. Let old cast members return for a one off story. It can be dramatic, a sketch comedy, claymation, an in-universe documentary, ship tour, anything is possible. Use the concept to test out new ideas to further explore upon in the future.
I just hope short treks hasn't scared them off from making a full length anthology series.
Overall accurate ranking. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds definitely deserves the top spot among Modern Trek. Its the best Star Trek show I've seen since TNG and DS9.
Completely agree with this statement.
Agreed
The only good SNW episodes so far? were TOS or TNG episodes already. I enjoyed them yeah - but I enjoyed the originals more.
Hopefully season 2 will try something new - but with Kirk coming in? I doubt it.
@@JohnnyWednesday TNG rehashed TOS plotlines...
@@tetravega567 - Yeah there are loads of examples all across Sci-fi of similar plots - but there are far more examples of unique plots - it's a bit worrying when the weak episodes are the original stories and the only good episodes are almost carbon copies.
Yeah the production is amazing - but can the writers actually deliver "Measure of a Man" quality on their own? jury is still out.
Something all Star Trek fans can agree on. Star Trek started as a TV series
I disagree! (Actually, I don't disagree, but you left it hanging there and I had to take a swing). LL&P
I disagree. It started by as an idea in someone’s head haha
It started as a pilot episode 😉
@@jimmynorris919 I agree
I read the original Klingon manga...
I would probably swap Picard and Discovery around as I think Disco had more absolute duds, but the rest of the list is pretty accurate.
Agreed
Same here.
I agree I was slightly annoyed that Discovery was put before Pecard
Agreed!
Nah, Picard was the worst of the bunch; it's like the writers had never watched Star Trek before. The show should have been at the bottom of the list for sure.
What's been great though is that even when modern Trek hasn't been perfect, it's at least tried to swing for the fences more than previous series. The pacing of Discovery and Picard have been off (sometimes significantly) at times, but they've at least tried to do something more than just Season 8 of TNG, and to actually spend time to develop their characters in interesting ways across less screen time.
Case in point: Jett Reno has had more character development across three short seasons of Discovery than Worf or Geordi LaForge had over the first 40 episodes of TNG. And she isn't even in a majority of them!
@@bjorn00000 She's had more character development than most of the Voyager crew over the entire 7 year run.
I think people are spoilt because they have so much choice now when it comes to space trek shows. It is very hard to woo audiences now.
@@bjorn00000 Very true though that is of course mostly a problem with most episodic TV designed for syndication back then vs. serial. Though it did take 4 seasons for the writers to allow Burnham's character to develop enough that she didn't have to cry at least once an episode.
I hate that stupid "at least they tried" nonsense.
Yea, so did an Italian man named Benito, doesn't mean that his intentions were good.
Nice video,
I might have put Picard above Discovery, but for the most part I agree with your list.
Would you be willing to do a list that ranks all trek series together?
That's asking for a war.
I would place TOS at the top - it was the first and broke new ground.
Anything with Sir Patrick is going to get top billing.
The rest? I am probably the only person here who didn't like DS9. And, I'm one of the few who think Voyager and Discovery are better than most acknowledge.
Yes. Discovery has become unwatchable. S1 of Picard actually started out great. It was only the last 2 episodes where it let me down a bit. S2 was the opposite. First two episodes were good but then the rest was a mess. Still overall Picard is watchable. Discovery is just plain terrible now.
I was just going to type that.
I don't think S2 of Picard ranks above a single season of Discovery. Honestly, even that show at its worst was better than S2 Picard, which is absolutely depressing but my honest opinion.
SNW is my 3rd overall favorite series already but if the entire run is as strong as the first season it could knock on the door of DS9 and TNG.
100% agree. At first, I kind of groaned when I heard about Lower Decks, but I gave it a try and was hooked by the 3rd episode due to how much they really leaned into the "lore" with their jokes. Strange New World is really a loving "retelling" of classic TOS Star Trek told with Pike as captain, not Kirk, which really changes the dynamics and how the overall story plays out. Especially when it comes to issues like "classic" TOS episodes. And I LOVE how they have given the Gorn some really serious consideration to make them something to really fear when confronted. And the episode with the Doctor and his daughter? That tore my heart out and yet filled it back up with the way it ended, all told through a "fantasy story".
Though that they solved the problem, so neatly, by episode 8 did vex me a little... We had this major issue, something that had obviously been tearing the doctor up for a while, and its gonna be a major plot point and character touchstone for hi- oh, its done? Daughter's saved and off the ship? Didn't even go for a full (short) season, huh? Alrighty then.
I also found the first two episodes of Lower Decks hard as Mariners character was so loud and overpowering it's like the actress was told to give 300%, by episode 3 I think they got the balance of the characters right.
Picard season 2 was a "step up"? Are you serious? That was the biggest letdown so far. "Calypso" does not have to deliver yet, that's the best part about it. Apart from that I can absolutely agree. Anson Mount is in Picard/Sisko territory.
That was my comment for the algorithm. You're welcome.
I absolutely agree that Star Trek fans can't seem to agree on anything! I respect your choice of the rankings, but my personal list would be totally different! In a way, that's what I love about current Trek - there's something for everyone and plenty to discuss and debate!
I'm in my '60s and it puzzles me that I read the SOS, different century about each new Trek as I encountered with every movie or series which came after TOS in the twentieth century.
For goodness sake, it's OK after nearly 60 years for something new to come along in my favorite 'verse.
Season finale of SNW was SUPERB. the only down is captain kirk, not too convincing.
But how captain pike diplomatic strategy is fantastic. Facing the enemy that literally can dissappear, out gunned, out numbered, but manage to handle it.
I can't praise more to season finale. Can't wait for season 2
I liked what they did with Kirk, more the Shatner style, less the Pine.
Strange New Worlds is just perfect Trek in the modern age. The episodic approach married with a compelling but not overbearing story arc is exactly what the series needed and I hope it becomes the blueprint for future shows. Overall I do like Discovery and I love that cast of characters, but episode to episode it doesn't pack as much punch as Strange New Worlds. Now if we can just get Michelle Yeoh back in the universe we might truly see that second golden age of Star Trek shows.
The Emperor basically carried the show past the limitations of it's first seasons.
I sooooo miss Micheal Yeoh as Georgiou!! I was sad to see her go, but loved it involved a throw back to the Guardian of Forever!!
I haven’t watched Prodigy yet but I’ve heard very good things and will get around to it. That being said, I agree with this list 100%. Good job!
It kind of lulls through episodes 3-5 or so; but if you push through it absolutely pays off!
It's hard to describe - but trust me, It tells clever stories and the science is spot on - you'll be just as engaged with about half the first season as you were with any episododic Trek. It's more like a Pixar film - yeah for kids, but adults too.
It's different, I'll just say. But, I must have found it entertaining enough to have binge watched the whole season.
The 32nd century in Discovery feel small… it doesn’t feel like a real world.
Agreed, because it's a very tight plot. They don't explore (much) or it's all done off camera to focus on the plot. I liked parts of the last season, the aliens were awesome, and book and his new friend were very good too. But Discovery is like "Endgame movies" in feel, without much else. At least they are leaving the past alone with that one now, so they can do w/e they want (short of time travel to the past) and it wont piss me off as a fan anymore... That's a huge plus for any future season, even tho I dislike the story telling format they are using.
@@Francois424 I really, really want Discovery’s future to be some alternate timeline. It just makes zero sense
@@kac5318 In my mind it already is. They could redeem it, you never know. But I dont think it'll happen.
I thought 100% of Star Trek fans could agree that Anson Mount as Pike (and his hair which I have seen referred to as Pike's Peak) could get it. Even I as a straight man know he could get it, granted now from me, but from A LOT of people that aren't me.
You guys nailed it with this list. Such a fun 30+ weeks of Star Trek with TrekCulture. Thank you 😊 SNW is superior to the other shows because character arcs work better than the season long “end of the universe” plot line that usually gets tired by episode 4 in Picard and DISCO. Such a good cast and likeable characters. I wish DISCO put some effort in developing the bridge crew.
For Discovery, Michael and Saru were the only main bridge crew with stories lately, with occasional stories for Georgo and Tilly (both now gone off somewhere). Discovery needs to develop more characters in its bridge crew. SNW really worked on its crew with great stories for each principle crew member.
Christopher Pike is my new favorite start fleet captain. Easily taking the spot formerly held by Gabriel Lorca. I like captains with depth of character and a hard edge.
Great hair and a nice body don't hurt, either.
How does Pike have a hard edge? The season finale showed us that Pike's not hard enough, he was too diplomatic. The Federation needed a brash edgier Kirk in command.
@@digitalcurrentsCorrect. Bet The Federation never seen a Captain like Jim either
Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks have been great additions to the series. Prodigy is great to introduce younger viewers to the series.
I'd say Prodigy is great for all viewers - it doesn't treat children like idiots and ends up being far more cerebral than Discovery - far truer to the spirit of TNG than all the violence and death in Discovery, Picard and SNW
I'm not young. I don't like cartoons. I don't like Star Trek Discovery or Star Trek Picard. Love the old Star Trek series. I really like Star Trek Strange New Worlds. I actually like Star Trek prodigy. Until SNW it was the only new Star Trek that I liked.
@@merricat3025 I'm not saying that watching it means you're a kid, I'm just saying that it was intentionally put on Nickelodeon to gain younger viewers, that doesn't mean those of us of a certain age can't enjoy it!
@@merricat3025 - So if your favourite film was re-created shot for shot in cartoon form - you'd no longer enjoy it?
@@JohnnyWednesday maybe. I just don't like most cartoons.
Spot on list, i might switch prodigy and lower decks on a personal level but very close for me, SNW is a homerun so far though, it gave me feelings i haven’t felt since watching 90’s trek as a kid
Hi. You Guys, Became my favorite channel in youtube universe as well as in star trek universe. I am Delighted by your comments. A necessary addition to the beloved star trek series. Thank you!
When I saw the notification for this video I chuckled 🤭 to myself. Real fans already know the order this video is gonna be in from start to finish.
SNW and LD are frankly excelling at their respective briefs. Here’s hoping for quite a few more seasons of each!
"and the easter eggs shatter the minds of those manning cetacean opservations" ... um i think you mean manateeing cetacean observations, -ehem-
The best New Trek moment is when Spock said "we are getting dangerously close to hijinks" followed closely by when he flatly declared "It's vulcan time"
All the scenes with Spock/T'Pring/Chapel are amazing.
Great list! personally would have swapped Prodigy and Discovery, but I do see the logic. As an old trekkie I'm glad I'm getting new awesome content!! SNW FTW!!
100% Star Trek: Strange New Worlds definitely is the BEST new Trek series. And I'd say maybe the best since TNG - or even TOS - in truth...
You know, you're right. S1 of Strange New Worlds really is quite possibly the best first season of any non animated Star Trek. It's really rough and frankly a coin toss between SNW and Lower Decks as best first season though.
I don't know know if I'm ready to see this video lol. Let's get into it!
Strange New Worlds is by far the best of New Trek and cannot wait for season 2
the only modern star trek (movies or series) that made me hyped for more, SNW is perfect
Great list! You guys nailed this one 😁🖖
I gave up on Lower Decks season 1, tried again season 2 and wound up loving it. This list makes me willing to try Prodigy again next year.
Lower Decks started a bit rough with Mariner being pretty insufferable, but it got a lot better and S2 was great.
SNW seems to be the strongest first season of any Trek.
Yeah, I know a guy who doesn't like Lower Decks because of Mariner. Makes me wonder if he saw S2 since she did undergo character development towards the end of S1 and beginning of S2.
Honestly Strange New Worlds captures all of the glory fans loved about the Original Series and TNG, but with modern CGI technology. By far my favorite.
Finally! A great list!! Strange New Worlds totally deserves to be at the top. What a great new show. Adding so much depth without messing too much with cannon. Although I will say I’m still not fond of how the Gorn look… wish they would correct their mistake carried over from Enterprise… but you don’t always get what you want!! (Always a good reason to quote The Rolling Stones!)
Can you guys do a video on Black hair representation in the Trek shows (Discovery is up their, but I really noticed SNW) I was excited for Uhura short hair waves and during Ghost of Illyria she actually kept her hair scarf on, that something we do as well I I've never seen it in Trek every, much less any scifi.
Also the crewman in sickbay at the end of The Elysian Kingdom had locs....long locs...as a person with locs (now longer then my pick, it's about mid back length now) and serving in Starfleet...
This was the moment where I truly understood representation (I always got it, just never felt a OHHHHH THEY DID THAT!) on a full scale of excitement for myself.
Anything y'all can do for a video I appreciate it
I loved Short Treks, and would love to see more...
(Though apparently I missed a Picard prequel?)
If there is one thing that every Star Trek fan can agree on, it's that Star Trek is something to talk about.
Agreed, good rankings. Strange New Worlds turns out to be far better than I'd anticipated.
Incredibly excited for newer seasons of Lower Deck and SNW, I feel like those two shows really capture part of the charm of the crew-based episodic stories of older trek series. I'm sort of looking forward to see how the new season of Discovery goes, the latest season was by far the best one for me, and I'm hoping we at least get another good season out of it.
I want to know what Captain Freeman did that got her arrested!
@@dmanc85 yea I'm thinking she isn't absolutely innocent but just barely guilty enough to be a scapegoat
The “problem” with Short Treks in availability outside the US - some were available when Netflix had the rights but as they only had the rights to some of the shows (some -> some) but I can’t find any on Paramount+ (when looking at from UK without a VPN)
They are on the discovery dvds in Australia
Hi there, I have a question, not sure if this was ever covered, please reply as its bothering me.
The music captain Picard is listening to in TNG s02e02 from 37 : 27 sounds like something I heard in minecraft.
Am I going crazy?
@TrekCulture really GETS Trek Culture. Great list. Community Support +1
To answer your topic statement ,there IS something we can all agree on.Gene Roddenberry ,was a genius and we all love his creation!
Good list, maybe I need to give prodigy a try.
Shrug off all perceptions - it doesn't treat the viewer like an idiot and has lots of treats for adults and fans. It's more like a Pixar movie - yeah for kids but not exclusively.
H. Jon Benjamin in Star Trek was the gift I never knew I needed.
Others are giving their full rankings for fun so here’s mine 😊
1. Strange New Worlds
2. Voyager
3. Deep Space Nine
4. The Next Generation
5. Discovery
6. Prodigy
7. Enterprise
8. Lower Decks
9. The Original Series
No such thing as Kelvin timeline for me lol
Discovery better than The Original Series - you are deluded. The only way discovery is better than TOS is the VFX. TOS had better writing (TOS had acclaimed writers amongst the writing team, not soap writers (who haven't a clue about writing good sci-fi) like Discovery has), no identity politics, a likeable main crew, whilst being political, was more subtle with how the politics were introduced.
@@InsaneProf I liked the different direction of DISCO, but believe it or not I actually agree that TOS writing was mostly better. It just didn't age well for me. Not that you'd know that since you just decided to make assumptions and feel superior. This isn't a list of which shows had the best writing. It's a list of the shows I enjoyed the most based on a variety of subjective factors. I shared it for fun and I don't mind having a light-hearted discussion with people who are nice, but outside of that I couldn't care less if you disagree.
I pretty much agree! I haven't watched Prodigy yet, and I might have flipped Discovery & Picard. The whole time I was wondering where you woul put Strange New Worlds, and Lower Decks. Lower Decks would totally take #1 without Strange NEw Worlds in the mix. I love both of them, but Strange New Worlds had my heart from the first episode that we saw Pike & crew in Dsicovery season 2!! Great ranking!!
I just got over and forgot about the arrest of Una. Now you brought it up again and I'm sad again 😭
I would swap Picard with Short Treks, other than that, the list is pretty much where I would put it. SNW is one of the best new shows on tv period, & probably my favorite Trek after DS9. The writers of Disco could certainly learn a thing or 3 from it.
Picard is awesome. Gtfo
That statement in the beginning is perfect lol
I agree with the list. I rewatched the first season again. Can’t wait for season two.
I never understood why people did not like Star Trek: Enterprise. It was really good. Oh and I completely agree with this list :;
"TOS", "Enterprise", and "Strange New Worlds" round out my favourites. "DS9", "Picard", and "Discovery" round out my least favoutite. I also liked "Star Trek Continues" and "TAS". Haven't seen "Lower Decks" and "Prodigy" yet.
Lower Decks helped us laugh when we all needed to, and I love it! SNW is the Trek we've all been waiting for, it's restored any doubts I had
I agree with list but I would place Lower Decks #1 but that's for second half of S2 but anyway new Star Trek can't compete with The Orville!
You forgot that President Rillak is Human, Cardassian, and Bajoran hybrid you left off the human.
Nice video and great to see an appraisal of new star trek (never be as good as middle ST though) ;)
I think that the better description would be “Worst to Tolerable”.
Absolutely agree! Pretty bummed that I just can’t seem to fall in love with Picard, but thoroughly enjoying everything else ♥️
Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks fighting to be the top stop and both ended their most recent season's cliffhanger with a senior officer getting arrested.
Geez we didn't the interruption at the end...let the woman have her time.
Totally agree with the first slot even though I haven’t got access to the full season yet. Not a fan of lower decks.
A little bit mystified as to why everybody else is. Seems I’m outnumbered. Love Prodigy so far but not as much as SNW.
I miss Short Treks. It was kind of like the books in the SNW book contest series.
Ooh! Ranking lists! I love these!
If anyone is interested, here's mine!
DS9
Enterprise
Lower Decks
Voyager
SNW
Discovery
TNG
TOS
Picard
The Animated Series
Prodigy
I love them all, so mine is a ranking from best to less best! 🖖❤️
I feel sorry for Prodigy - I feel it's pro-science and anti-violence stance easily beat the gore and mess of Picard Season 1. They explore incredible planets and meet incredible lifeforms - Picard season 1 had somebody having their eye torn out
@@JohnnyWednesday I still enjoyed Prodigy, but found it very lacking compared to the other shows.
I do think it isn't really fair comparing a kids show to more adult aimed ones, though.
@@sarahscott5305 - It's entirely fair. Is Lord of the Rings (PG) better or worse than "American Pie : Girl's Rules" (18)? just because something is intended for adults doesn't mean it's good and just because something is kid friendly doesn't mean adults can't enjoy it (I point you to the MCU)
@@JohnnyWednesday oh no, I completely agree with that. I recently discovered a show on Disney+ about Gargoyles. It was SO GOOD even though it is ostensibly aimed at kids.
I didn't say being aimed at kids means something is worse. Like I said, Prodigy is good, but it's just not as clever or engaging as Disco or Picard or Lower Decks. It's a shame because it was the Star Trek series I was looking forward to the most.
Your list is all over the fucking place.
Before watching the video, I wanted to comment how creepy that thumbnail is 😂
Hahahaha. Loved the first few lines of this video. (no spoilers) Well played.
Lower Decks reminds me of a fan series. Alot of the episodes talks about how good Star Trek used to be
I thought that Strange New Worlds did finish season one last week. I was just hoping it’s doing good for Paramount because Pike is already my favorite captain.
As STSNW (is that the shortcut?) hasn't aired in Germany yet, I am really, really interested in the show! Come on! Better than DS9, TNG AND LD? That is nearly unbelievable! Hyped!
I wouldn’t say that SNW is better than DS9 or TNG. But I’m very, very pleased. There’s a lot of character development for all of the main cast, minimal nonsensical plot lines (see Picard and especially Discovery), and good stories (which, to me, it’s been lacking from everything except Prodigy).
For me its the best show since season 4 Enterprise. I could write a book about what I don't enjoy about Disco. Some of S1 of Picard was ok, some was really bad. S2 of Picard started out with a massive bang. It was fantastic but from around episode 4 onward I barely enjoyed any of it.
Actually this might be the best first season of any Trek show. S1 of TNG, DS9, Enterprise, Voyager and Disco were bad to average at best. This season one was good mostly and sometimes fantastic. I am surprised to be honest. I didn't think the Kurtzman team was up to the task and had mostly lost faith. I am SO glad to be wrong.
Prodigy gets a bad rap for no reason. It easily carries the weight that Star Trek always has, while being true to the "ship at sea" Trek concept. It's supposed to be "for kids" but handles emotional subjects substantially better than Picard and especially Disco
Prodigy is awesome only seen ten episodes so far as Australia doesn’t get full releases like US and Paramount Plus in Australia is unreliable Trek should have stayed on Netflix
Lower Decks is my #1 outta those. A show I almost never gave a chance. Thank my lucky stars I did, it's pure enjoyment n it's just FUN!
There should be a PIC spin-off prequel called STAR TREK: NEW FRONTIER, featuring Jean-Luc Picard's years as the Captain of the USS Constellation. And an ENT sequel called STAR TREK: ARCHER.
There’s something to love in all the shows. Good on the higher ups for creating different shows for different audiences
Forgot the brief animated Star Trek in 1973. Some of the episodes were very good. Favorite character…the real cat lady Lt Miress.
I haven't seen any of the animated shows yet, and only a couple Short Treks, but with that in mind, my Top 3 are: Discovery at #1, Picard at #2, and Strange New Worlds at #3. Planning to try the others in the next few weeks, but live-action is my preference, so I don't think much of my list will change.
Sean just can't resist inserting himself into other videos like Q from TNG lmao
Interesting video, but asking me to rate these is much like asking me to rank my favorite flavors of ice cream. The only way they could be better IMHO is if they scheduled them so we had a new episode every week all year.
I might put Prodigy ahead of Lower Decks, and it's hard to judge the Short Treks as a whole, since they are all so different. In fact, I'd put them ahead of Picard and Discovery. Otherwise, a pretty solid ranking, with SNW easily taking the top spot.
I think you'll find it's...
1. SNW
2. Lower Decks
3. Discovery
4. Picard
5. Prodigy
* No idea about Short treks.
I also agree with the list that was made by the TrekCulture team, Thank you Brie for sharing it. I would have liked to have seen you live smile.
Exactly how I ranked them before I watched the vid with the exception of Short Treks. I agree with its placement in the list, I just never really considered it as a series to begin with.
Strange New Worlds is the best of the recent shows. It stays true to the original series.
Lower Decks in 2nd place? Well, Shaka when the walls fell.
Wow I agree with your ranking!!!
Great list. Totally agreed on all accounts.
I'll change up the top 3
1. Strange New Worlds
2. Prodigy
3. Lower Decks
Anyone else remember the time when everyone was throwing shade on the ENT series? Then DIS and PIC came along...
Really good list!
Most trek shows get hatred but after a few seasons, it grows on everyone
Will not happen with Discovery and Picard.
SNW and LD causing heated discussions isn't remotely surprising. Both do what they set out to do brilliantly, so it basically comes down to personal preference.
I agree with this this list. My one gripe with Prodigy though is that looks more like Star Wars than Star Trek.
Strange New Worlds is definitely number one on the list. For me, the only change I would make is move Lower Decks to the bottom of the list and move everything else up one. I tried multiple times to get into Lower Decks but its not for me.
I really like PIC. I'd put it in 2nd. Lower decks is a thrill too and maybe the biggest surprise in the franchise
I love that Prodigy finished ahead of Disco and Picard. It's a good little show.
I'd like to see a ranking list of ALL Star Trek series. Then we'll see people's biases. It's a list the NO ONE will ever agree on because it CANNOT be objective.
That intro LOL
I have to agree that Lower Decks outright surprised me. For some reason, them not taking the show seriously, being funny, and poking fun of everything, somehow feels like Star Trek. It's strangely optimistic. It actually makes me wish they could do a live action of it somehow. I don't know how they could do it, but anything is possible.
Discovery certainly has acknowledged Calypso...the computer has taken the name Zora
Sadly living in Italy i miss the two newest shows
