  • In this Part 4 Video of Singlehanded Man Overboard Self Rescue I demonstrate a potential game-changing way to climb back aboard -- I use the mast halyard to demonstrate this technique that features the use of rock climbing equipment such a Gri-Gri belay device and jumars or mechanical ascending clamps. This gear is what I use when I am ascending the mast. My old friend Ken Wylie of Archetypal, Adversity Training suggest we try it as a way to climb back aboard in a man overboard situation while singlehanded. Thanks Ken. This may save some lives.

Great video - thanks! Personally, I don't think having all that gear is very practical. I use an ascender and a Mast Mate to climb my mast and I think it's kind of complicated using just one ascender (for safety). I think it would take a lot of continuous practice to get all that gear straight. But I really wish ALL solo sailors would watch this because it is an issue that we all need to be constantly aware of - STAYING ON THE BOAT. Thanks again.

Roger that mate. 100% agree -- STAY ON THE BOAT! That said, I have fallen overboard twice.... thankfully it was at the dock... Yeah, it's a lot of gear for sure. I may have a disproportionate comfort level with it as I have been a rock climber for 45 years, and some of the stuff is second nature to me. That said, am out cruising this week and I had the gear on today. I want to do a live drill with it all to gauge the practicality of it. Thanks for the comment.
