    Just getting into HDR color grading after buying a Ninja V from my GH5S and GH5 cameras. After watching several other videos on this subject I could not figure out how to add the REC.2020 PQ setting and Panasonic Vlog to my footage. At 8:13 you said to go to "Settings" in your menu if our menu did not look like yours. You are the only one that said go to "Settings" to change the menu. Thank You!! Now my footage looks correct!!

    Nice video! Quick question. If I was getting 4K60 HDR footage from my capture card that’s in HEVC, would I use a PQ project or HLG project? The exported video would also be for CZcams. Also, would I still need Compressor??

    • @EthanMitchell_YouTube
      @EthanMitchell_YouTube  Před 3 lety

      Hey Techno Dad! Thanks for stopping by! So it depends on what type of HDR footage, the HEVC is just the codec and doesn’t really matter. If your capture card is true 10 bit HDR, then yes you can do it no problem. So your looking for HLG, PQ,LOG record settings on your capture device. If may also state the color space which your lookin for BT 2020, BT 2100. May also say rec. 2020. As far as Fincal cut goes I have had better luck with colors using the PQ project settings. You don’t need compressor if your ok with uploading large exports to CZcams. You only need compressor if you want to export in HEVC from final cut. This will take a HDR pro res 422 file that is 8gigs and make it 1gig. You will need to export in pro res or HEVC for you tube to recognize it as HDR.

    • @TechnoDad
      @TechnoDad Před 3 lety

      @@EthanMitchell_CZcams Thank you for such a quick response. So the capture software isn't so robust. It just states 4K60 HDR or 4K60 without HDR. I would like to use HDR but it seems that FCPx doesn't like the file type. I keep getting "None of the selected files or folders can be imported. Change the selection and try again." So I am capturing gameplay from an Xbox outputting 4K60 HDR. The capture software doesn't give me many options. File type is either H.264 or HEVC and HEVC mode is set to MAIN which is the only option. Other than that, there's not much else. I can capture 4K60 SDR and get it to work in FCPx without issue. I may need to transcode these files, but I wouldn't know how to do that. I heard I could do it in Compressor, so I bought it, but it won't accept the file just like FCPx. It's a very strange situation. If you have any ideas, I'm all ears and email may be a better place for this conversation - technodad55@gmail - hit me up when you have some free time. • @EthanMitchell_YouTube
      @EthanMitchell_YouTube  Před 4 lety +1

      High Paul! Thanks for stopping by! Unfortunately the HDR feature on the Anafi is not “True” HDR. It’s an effect to get more dynamic range out of the sensor. Same with the Mavic Air 2, Gopros, Insta360 One R, DJI Osmo action, Skydio 2....etc. You need to shoot in 10 bit color, with Log, HLG, PQ, or Raw.
      BUT.....I am experimenting with the Anafi’s PLOG to see how it does when stretched into HDR.

      @EthanMitchell_YouTube  Před 3 lety

      @@OUTNABOUTwithYoursTrulyLIZZOC LOL, but know it can be a bit confusing. Final Cut is pretty much updated to handle HDR content no problem. The HDR video the iPhone 12 creates is in a HLG format, which does not require any color space conversion. All you have to do is create a new library in final cut, go to library options and turn on wide gamut, the when you create a new project, select rec 2020 HLG in the color space. You can drop in the HDR clips from the iPhone and edit as normal. Let me know if your still having problems.

      Hi and thanks for stopping by!! Yeah it takes a really long time for 10 bit HEVC even if it’s in HDR or not. If you were to use a 8bit 709 timeline it’s pretty quick. I think it’s bc the older machines are not designed for HEVC, that’s just my guess. I was told the M1 Macs are supposed to be much faster with HEVC but I guess not. Hi Jon! Thank you! Yes YouTue will display an SDR version on non HDR displays. The compressor settings are pretty easy to set up, there is a YT video showing how to do it, I will send the link. As far as the Apple 12 goes, from what I read, it sounds like you will only be able to edit HDR Dolby vision footage on the phone. I hope I’m wrong about that, but there has been no mention of air dropping to MacBook for edit in FinalCut. Being this is Apple to Apple, you would think they would make this happen. Either way this is very exciting for HDR moving forward.

      @@RBAPRODUCTION your camera should have a natural, log, or HLG color profile. Or if your shooting RAW to the Ninja V the color profile does not matter. Log and HLG will give you the most latitude with color when creating HDR content. ProRes is a type of codec, not color profile. You can use ProRes if you want, very good choice, but use the correct color profile is more important. What camera are you using?

    how do you do with the title / effects / transition, so that they are not gray or too dark?

    • @EthanMitchell_YouTube
      @EthanMitchell_YouTube  Před 3 lety

      Hi Witele! Thanks for stopping by! Once you add the title/ transition/effect, with the effect highlighted, click on the “I” at the top of the inspectior and go to color space override, and change it to HLG or PQ, which ever format you are using for the project. Then you can change the luminosity for HDR. Some effects or titles may need to be saved as a “new compound clip” before you can change the color space.( right click on the clip, then click, new compound clip). I would also recommend adding effects using an adjustment layer as well, this will allow you to change the color space of the effect itself without effecting the color space of the clip.

      Hi Kyoto! Thanks for stopping by! YT has to process the HDR version of the video so it is displayed correctly. Depending on the length and resolution of your upload, this can take some time, days even. Before the pandemic, YT would take approx 24 hours to process a HDR video. Now YT can take days to process a HDR. The last HDR test clip i uploaded last month was 4k and 3min long and it took YT 3 days to process the HDR version. Hope this helps.

      Thanks Khorramshahr! Let’s see, make sure wide gamut is turned on under library, for project settings make sure your using Rec 2020 HLG, and for export use master file, Pro Res 422 LT or better. If you get errors it’s usually bc you still have the view set to proxy, which you will need to switch it to optimized/original. Also Final a cut may not be recognizing your Sony HLG footage as HLG so with the clip selected, click on the information tab and make sure it says HLG. If not, you will need to change the color space to HLg

    • @EthanMitchell_YouTube
      @EthanMitchell_YouTube  Před 3 lety +1

      Also you cannot export using the Facebook/CZcams setting for HDR bc it will export in a H2.64 codec, which Will lot contain the correct metadata for CZcams to recognize as HDR. Hope this helps.
