This was one of my favourite games growing up. As a massive Star Wars fan, this was a dream come true! Especially with all the unlockable ships!
Rogue Squadron II really was FAR ahead of its time, and still looks better than many games even today. Factor 5 really were wizards. It’s fascinating hearing how much of a crunch time they had, and what came out of it. Fantastic coverage of one of the best games for the console!
I got a Gamecube for Smash Melee. A year later I got Rogue Leader because it was cheap being a 'player's choice award' game and because I was blown away by how good the screenshots on the back of the box looked, and when I got home I had a new favorite videogame and one I'd end up playing even more than Melee. To this day it's still my favorite game from the 6th generation, and one of my greatest disappointments is the cancellation of the finished Wii Rogue Squadron compilation because Factor 5 went under.
I got Rogue Leader for Christmas and I remembered how good the graphics and lighting actually were. Played it on an emulator in 1080p 20 years later and the graphics hold up. Probably the worst performance though for any game for that emulator which leads me to believe that they have some "magical" way of light rendering over 15 years before RTX started appearing in modern games that requires a beefy PC to play with RTX on... even in Minecraft
I had a PC that would run games good during the N64 days & happened to find the original Rogue Squadron for about $10. I was surprised that my PC would run it smooth without having to lower graphics quality. I fell in love with it. It was the funnest Star Wars starfighter game I’d ever played. When I saw Rogue Squadron 2 on GameCube, I bought the GameCube just for it! It was even better! Part 3 was really fun too, but the 2nd was always my favorite one. I remember playing for hours and hours until I was able to get the highest medal on every level. They really should remaster these for all the current consoles! I’d be happy if they’d just make ports because they’re still fun games.
This is exactly what I needed. Well thought out and written commentary with just the right amount of deep knowledge.
Keep it up!
When you consider that going back 22 years from Rogue Squadron 2 takes you to 1979 and Atari 2600 really getting into this grove and 22 years later in Fall 2021 here we were. What an incredible 20 plus years for gaming, which as someone born in early mid 70s coincides with my own love of gaming. The greatest ride...thank you;)
Shadows of the Empire was my first exposure to Star Wars, and was the first time I saw the Battle of Hoth. Rogue Squadron was one of my favorite Star Wars games of time (childhood and being my second exposure to Star Wars before I watched the movies) and loved Battle for Naboo while growing up.
i really wish the Rogue Leader and Battle For Naboo (and Rogue Squadron 3) would get a PC steam and or current console release. RIP Factor 5.
This game still holds up.
👍 I think your channel will blow up in the future. Really professional content for only 225 subscribers. Well... now 226
One of the best Rogue Leader videos I've seen.
Man I miss this game so much. A Nintendo switch re release would bring me tears of joy.
Also, subd.
Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2: Rogue Leader and Madden NFL 2002 were my first GameCube games back in early 2002. 👍
Awesome stuff. Keep up the good work and your subs will skyrocket! 👏
Got this vid recommended by youtube today! Great stuff!! Liked and subscribed ;)
i am not a star wars fan, but that bonus scene of piloting the millenium falcon through the asteroid field made me audibly "what the actual fuck?!"
Rogue Leader was the reason back for Christmas 2001 I begged my dad to get a GameCube instead of a PS2. And he did and got me Rogue Leader and I played the crap out of it and many other great games on the system that came out after
This game shows how easy it was to develop for the GameCube, something Nintendo really was careful about since the 64 had some major bottlenecks here and there. While the PS2 was struggling to have its full potential exploited, Rogue Squadron managed to realize the console full potential out of the gate.
I still have the 3rd rogue game which you can play this original co-op . Old school split screen
Factor 5 baby!!!
Duuuuude this video was FANTASTIC. I freaking love this game so much!
Thanks man! Looking back I deff consider this video kinda a turning point for my channel. Where I leveled up a bit in terms of production and quality. Thanks for the kind words!
Great video, man! I bought Rogue Squadron 2 back then and was also utterly amazed how it looked. It was just too difficult for me. 😂
Wow so glad i found your channel! Keep it up !!
Just wanted to say that Shadows of the Empire is one of the best n64 games.
It is so iconic for its time period. And there is a surprisingly high amount of replay value.
A great video with awesome backstory on this great game; I haven't played it in so long that I forgot just how much there was to it, like the audio commentary and the dang Buick and that amazingly crafted tutorial level. I'm glad the algorithm helped me find your channel.
I have to point out a correction though; the Star Wars media timeline from 1977-2014 was called Expanded Universe, not extended. In fact, as far as my googling has found, Star Wars was the very first franchise to refer to itself as an expanded universe in history. But for some reason, nearly every single CZcamsr or article writer uses the word extended and I'm not sure why.
You just gained a sub, keep going, your content and delivery is amazing. Your informative, your videos are well researched and put together, I look forward to seeing what else you produce. If I may quote a once great Sith Lord,
"We will watch your career with great interest".

I bow down to European game wizardry supremacy
That was the game that made me choose to buy a GameCube and became die-hard Nintendo fan. Actually, when GameCube launched was already that late teenage days when you are old to got some fancy gift as a videogame and to young to have such money, that I had to wait to have my own salary to buy it, already 2007. 😅
To your point about Nintendo's treatment of this game (constant showing in demo discs, Nintendo Power, the back of the GameCube box at launch and even having a Nintendo-printed Player's Guide), I strongly believe Nintendo distributed this game in the US at least, under LucasArts' name and publisher ID.
Yeah, one of the key launch games! Good recap - and of a great game. I do wonder what it could have been had they gone in with a full year or more to develop it rather than just 9 months....
Dang, you're detaling all of Gamecube aren't you? Ambitious, I like it. Good lucks to you and i'll be watching....
Rogue Squadron II...G.O.A.T. as I'm not a Tie Fighter, I'm a Rogue.
this game kicked serious ass
Its weird how this title gets almost no mention nowadays, I remember when the GC launched every magazine was going nuts over this game. I loved it personally.. although admittedly with Halo coming out around the same time there was definitely stiff competition. What an exciting era for gaming
Great video. Subbed.
I wish so badly they’d release the Rogue Squadron games on all the current systems, even if it were just ports of them. Of course we’d all prefer to have remakes with updated graphics, but they’re so much fun, I’d be happy either way. While I’m thinking of it, they also have needed for years to release console versions of the old 1998 Sega Star Wars Trilogy Arcade game! That was my favorite arcade game ever & one of my favorite Star Wars. They rumored a console release a couple times in the past, but it’s never happened! If they were to release it & the Rogue Squadron series on all the current consoles, they’d undoubtedly sell really well. Lucas/Disney have released a lot of old games over the years & several of them were not that great. I don’t get them having these masterpieces on the shelf that would sell better than several they have released & just leaving them there collecting dust! Maybe one day we’ll get them, but I stopped hoping for that a long time ago.
There were plans for a enhanced Wii port of the games, but the studio shut down before it could be released. One of Factor 5's co-founders even expressed desire to port it to the Switch.
@@spearmintpony7105 I thought I had read that somewhere, but I wasn’t sure. Rogue Squadron 2 was the only reason I bought a GameCube during that era. Of course I ended up loving several other games they came out with, but it was worth every penny to me just for the fun I had with Rogue Squadron. Maybe one day.
✨E U R O P E A N ✨
Not sure why but I completely skipped both Rouge Squadron games. Might be time for me to give them a shot now.
The sheer SLANDER of Shadows lol Best game ever as a kid but yeah its got a million faults xD but... THE OUTRIDER CMONNNNN lol
ha first view and comment lmao
the first like
I didn't like this one as much as the original because of the big increase in difficulty.
