Captain tries to land, ignoring crosswind limitations - AZ1670

- The aircraft, operating flight AZ1670 from Pisa (LIRP) to Roma Fiumicino (LIRF) with 4 crew members and 46 passengers on board, after trying to land at runway 16L, stopped at a distance of about 1800 m from the runway threshold, on a grassy strip close to DE taxiway. The plane reported extensive damage to the structure, while some of the occupants were transferred to medical facilities outside the airport.

Yes, I agree with the original suggestion and I appreciate your being receptive to the comment. The synthetic voice is quite distracting and detracts from the human elements of the story. I wish content creators would stop using that feature. It’s not good.
Fwiw, I like the voice. It's calm and very clear.
Bad enunciation, speaking way too fast and talking at the top of your lungs (something many American content creators love to do for some reason) make videos inaccessible for many. For example disabled people and/or people who don't have English as their first language.
This voice provides a great viewing and listening experience with no distractions.

Let's assume, that 118kts were the speed to actually fly the approach (Vref+5). The calculation for gusty crosswinds would be:
1. Add half of the steady headwind component.
Since the windangle was 100° (even slight tailwind!!!) nothing to add, just go with Vref+5
2. Add the difference between steady wind and gust (37-24=13)
So the approachspeed should have been 118+13=131kts
Nothing wrong with the speed. But I'm not sure if any tailwind-component is allowed in winds that strong.
@@aviationinvestigationchannel Thank you for clarification - I understood, that 116kts was the Vref for this weight WITHOUT any wind. And +14kts extra speed is too much, for sure!
I'm not sure what the normal Vref speed for an ATR-72 would be in a no-wind situation, but given the high cross-wind component during this approach, the chosen Vapp speed (130kts) doesn't seem too outrageous. The normal procedure is to add knots to the Vref speed according to the amount of wind there is being reported. For instance: with the wind reported as 25knots gusting to 35, you would add 1/2 of the steady wind - (1/2 = @ 12 knots) and all of the gust factor (10). So, with a no-wind Vref speed of 115 knots you would add together 115 + 12 + 10 = 137 knots. Given a long enough runway, he could have approached at 180 kts and still been able to control the airplane through the landing and eventual turn-off. The fact that he crashed simply indicates that he did not handle the controls properly. That's all.
Why the advice to land with a negative pitch attitude, if it risks landing on the nose wheel? Would a positive landing wings level (forget the flare) not work?
These pilots may have messed up some, esp the captain quite a bit, however their handling of the airplane after the gear collapse was excellent and amazing.

i've easily been on 100+ flights in my life at the age of 35. i've encountered a lot of different situations but nothing scared me more than a sketchy landing at heathrow about 8 years ago. during this time there was a hurricane off the southern coast of england and the london area got slammed real bad. it was like the british version of hurricane sandy (im from new jersey). i was on my way back from a work trip in bulgaria. as we got about a half hour from heathrow the pilot said the weather was pretty bad and there were very high winds. so, we're ready for landing and a lot of us are looking around saying how THE FUCK is this guy gonna land the plane. i shit you not it felt like we were almost at a 90 degree angle when we were only about 100ft from the ground. somehow he managed to land that bird perfectly
thats annoying that you cannot control the plane even if they are safest. Probably would be good to have at least some voting system so that each passenger could vote to land or go to other airport in such case, I probably better pay more, take more time but land more safely
@@Name-lt2tz i get what you are saying but imagine the chaos between 375+ passengers that would cause lol. like they say, a person can be reasonable but, a group of people are unpredictable and illogical in times of crisis. im just happy the plane landed lol

I read a report of a ga accident last year at parma airport and let me tell you the airport fire crew was even worse that time. The guys couldn't mount a hose and the water pump was nonfunctional. It turned out that the last time the crew, station or equipment got an inspection was when the airport was built. Those guys hadn't seen a fire in 8 years.
Fun fact: Fiumicino has also runway 25 😂

Oof, the high wing makes it even more difficult in the crosswind. The wing to fuselage catches the crosswind more.
