- In today’s Rolex Day-Date special, I share my recent upgrade from a reference 18038 to a newer 18238 and discuss my reasons behind it. Following my numerous reviews and history videos on the iconic Presidents’ watch, I’m also excited to explore 7 affordable alternatives, starting at just $100 and several cool luxury options too. These suggestions cover a wide variety of price ranges, so check them out if you are looking for a Day-Date style watch.
The watches featured in this video are: Tudor Prince Date Day 76200, Seiko 5 SNX79, SNK385K, SNXJ89, Breitling Transocean A4531012, Bulova Super Seville, 96c127, Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 231.13.42.22.01.001, Orient Day-Date President, Hamilton Jazzmaster H32505741, H32505511, and H32505731.
Special thanks to the uninhibited T. rex Hugo Mountbatten whose passion for the Day-Date prestige brings him back to Philadelphia with a favor to ask...and a challenge to accept involving fine vintage wines and a game of Street Fighter II.

I just love his intros as well as his content
Haha playing SF with the Rex
I want to play street fighter with them.
The production of these videos often goes unnoticed, absolutely sublime, i thoroughly enjoy your work. Well done TGV, keep it up!
Thank you so much my friend, I deeply appreciate that.
Onwards an upwards!
Best regards,
TGV
@The Urban Gentry , I don’t know if anyone catches the police siren at the end of the intro. A nod to the police Dept that always interrupts during vids. Haha!
Maybe one day he could do a video on how he produces them.
Watches in order:
Number 1: 3:04 - Orient President Classic
Number 2: 4:59 - Hamilton Jazzmaster
Number 3: 6:54 - SEIKO 5 SNK885K/SNK355
Number 4: 9:11 - Bulova Super Seville / Bulova 96C127
Number 5: 10:40 - Omega Seamaster Aqua Tera
Number 6: 12:43 - Breittling TransOcean Day-Date
Number 7: 14:26 - Tudor Prince Day-Date
The Tudor or the Seiko seems like something I'd pick up as my next watch :) Enjoy gents.
Kiefer Kirk thanks. Enjoy your next pickup!
Tudor makes some mighty fine watches.
I just felt in love with the Bulova, might be my first purchase on Chrono24
Every single one is excrement.
@@clegsmegson2627 Let me guess, except the Rolex.
Hugo is back! Day date is so under appreciated, really beautiful piece.
Stone Island - Proper old school footy hooligan style.
@MM79 me and my friend still call it Penge mange to this day XD its about 5 miles away from us.
I own that exact shirt haha
Amazing intro, don't stop with this little sketches, its such a delight before the actual video!
Ding ding ding! We have a winner. You have won the award for biggest brown-noser on CZcams!
@@clegsmegson2627 I apreciate your comment and I find it amusing that you have the energy for this type of comments. This channel share a unique passion that some of us have, I've been a long time viewer and I absolutely enjoy the content and the personality behind it, so when I make a remark like the one in my initial comment its because I want to give possitive feedback on the content that we get to enjoy for free, encouraging the person making it to continue posting! Next time instead of commenting something bad about someone or something try and think if you could say something nice to actually make them feel better!

Love the characterization of the Hamilton as Cadillac-like. Can almost see the 50' fins in that dial. Brilliant.
Everyone needs a Hamilton in their life.definately my favourite of the bunch.looks delightful.
Good work fella.
Why do we all need one?
@@StuntpilootStef just a saying.Hamilton are nice watches.a good addition to collections.i love my Khaki field.this one looks very nice.
@@rickewilde I don't get Hamilton. It doesn't seem to be anything special. But I'm not American, so I don't have the patriotic feeling you may have with the brand.
@@StuntpilootStef that's cool with me.we all like different things.
Agreed, they are amazing
Kudos for including Seiko, Orient, Hamilton and Bulova. History + Quality + Value. Perfect formula for collectors on a budget. Hugo's tiny strap size - very hard to find...
"Hadouken" 😂
now there's a blast from the past!
'Arrkak-yukak 'Arrkak-yukak'
I thought that it was thd exquisite art of farting into one's hand and releasing it in someone else's face?
The Aqua Terra was worn in Skyfall and Spectre. It’s back in some scenes in No Time to Die as well 👍🏻 Cracking video as always fratello
I wonder why all of those brands stopped producing watches with fluted bezels 🤔 I think its such a beautiful design element
Boudewijn just seems dated now days. (no pun intended)
I guess so but people often complement my watch when I wear one with a fluted bezel so it seems like there's still a lot of appreciation for the design🙈.
I have the Orient "President" and I love it. It's a nice placeholder while I'm saving for the actual Rolex Day Date 18238. Saving it for my 41st Bday....so 4 years and some change more LOL. Hopefully the price isn't TOO ridiculous by then.
Hey, that seems like an invicta box, but green instead of yellow! (*waits for the heresy accusations to come*)
Hugo needs his own show!
I don't think youtube would allow such debauchery! LOL
Thank you Jay, I will suggest it to him, but I doubt it, he barely leaves Isla Nublar for less then 20k in cash.
Best regards,
TGV
Hugo playing Street Fighter really made me laugh. Well done.
Yeah he’s a funny dude. I like the juxtaposition of his “high brow “ yet friendly persona and his self deprecating humor...
❤️ Hugo
The Hugo intro was fantastic. I might have to get myself one of those Orient. Looking forward to the next video. Keep up the good work.
That intro grabbed my attention better than the last 7 Hollywood blockbusters did
Didn't realize TGV's into streetwear too with that stone island sweater. Splendid.
TGV you and Hugo should do a live Q&A. That would be hilarious.
Hugo rocks!
No doubt about it: I truly love the Bulova Super Seville. That was actually my grail watch. My budget regarding watches is not big. I could never buy a Rolex with good conscience and I am fine with it. I own some Seikos, Orients, Casios, etc. but I started really loving the Rolex Day Date look, when I got into watches. I looked for affordable alternatives, but none of them displayed that same look that I loved about the Rolex Day Date 18039 with the thin long indices, the fluted bezel, the magnifier and the president bracelet, until I discovered the Bulova Super Seville in stainless steel with the blue sunburst dial. It was love on first sight. I have literally been thinking about more than 1 year to get it, but prices were quite high on ebay and the blue one was quite rare. And then I finally got one in perfect condition on chrono24. It felt amazing to finally have a watch on your wrist that you were thinking about for so long.
Orient Day Date President SEV0J001WY-B and SEV0J001BY is one of the best high quality and affordable Day Dates out there.
Recently picked up a Bulova Super Seville in all stainless steel. Really love it and glad it got a mention on this ist, despite being a pretty obvious homage.
The cinematography in the opening would make Welles proud .
Mido Commander is the best. 37mm, 20mm lugs, WR with screw down crown, quickset day-date, automatic with manual wind. The watch is incredible
Just wanted to let you know that you have really gotten me into watches. I purchased a binger automatic watch and couldn’t be happier! Thank you for pushing these videos out!
Great compilation! I bought the Seiko SNXS79k with the dark grey sunburst dial for my dad and he almost entirely retired his Dugena quartz watch in favor of the Seiko. For under 100 Euros that is a cracking watch which is hard to spot as an entry-level piece without some background knowledge about the Seiko 5 line.
Thanks TGV, I always appreciate the affordable alternative videos! I’d like to see another road trip video, you do a great job on those travel videos.
Love vintage Mido Commanders with the 12 o'clock day. Also, vintage Rados, with day of the week at 6 are rather sharp.
TGV, you forgot one affordable alternative, a second hand Daytona from Chris over at Horology House!
That's a burn.
I agree with your decision, the 18238 is a more compelling choice, definitely one of my grails. Great job TGV!
“Chuffed to bits” Love it.
Lmfao you on r/watchescirclejerk ? 😭😭😂😂
Hugo is the best!
I love the fact you never changed your channel and what watches you look at, even after teaming with Watch Box. Keep up the great work! You and Hugo make a great team!
9:10
that gives the term "oyster" a new meaning
Had surgery on my left (watch) hand yesterday. I've been binge watching The Urban Gentry all day! Thanks for the new upload.
Hell Matt, firstly, I wish you a swift and healthy recovery. Thank you for watching my videos, I truly appreciate.
As somebody how has been in hospital so many times, I know exactly how it is, hang in there my friend.
Sending you lots of positive vibes.
Onwards and upwards!
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentry thanks for those vibes TGV. I feel better already.
Thank you for your positive energy and your good movies, you are a guy who gives hope to the world.
I suggest seriously considering the Tudor Prince Date Day if you are looking for an alternative, for the following reasons:
1. Basically the same as the Rolex, from materials to looks. The only difference being the movement;
2. The movement is an ETA. It makes the case thinner, which is more ideal for dress watches. It is also easier to service and source parts, especially with the crown's apparent intent to move servicing their movements fully in house by restricting the supply of parts to third parties; and
3. You have a gambit of dial colors, dials, and case materials to choose from. The mosaic dial is simply stunning.
For these reasons, I believe the Tudor Date Day can even be considered the better alternative.
Owning a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date 15200 I still switch back to my Seikos (SRP Turtle and SNK361) more than often because of the day function 😅
Working irregular shifts I always lose track of the current day of the week 😄
Nice episode TGV - I lusted after a 18238 for over 20 years before finally buying one made in 1995 last year. It looks brand new but doesn't get much wrist time. I still smile to myself everytime I see it. The centre of mine and any collection really. It gets noticed more than any other watch I wear. Enjoy yours !
Just so happy because I managed to get my hands on a very nice two tone Bulova Super Seville with champagne dial from 1979. Not a single bit of gold has worn off on either the bracelet or bezel, by the bracelet it looks like it has been worn very little. I'm a bit of a box-ticker, even though that's not what I base my purchases on, but the fantasy of having that 36mm fluted bezel President experience has been haunting me for years (even before I got into watches, the Rolex Day-Date has always been like THE boss of watches to me, even back when I barley knew it was a Rolex). And as I only have new-money and not yet ready to spend Rolex money on a 36mm dress watch I will mainly wear to dinner parties, dates, and maybe some poker games, this bomb version of the Super Seville I will wear with pride. Btw, many of the players I play poker with are watch geeks, and there's often both Rolex, Omega and Breitlings on the wrists around the table, me being the underdog usually with the PRX p80, or a Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba (also day-date, but mainly my work beater). Watches are so damn fun. Also, happy new year TGV. Cheers.
got my 118238 with the 3d/computer dial preown and i love it
I'm starting to really like these dino intros
I have a 3-star Orient automatic with day and date and I love it.
The Orient President!. I thought it was a watch for old people back then. Now looks stunning to me 😸
Nicely done, TGV, and congratulations on your beautiful new President.
nice review I years ago bought the 1803 day date later up graded to 18038 concealed clasp and sapphire then again up to the 118238. big heavy solid links no lume with roman numbs ! now eventually got the 218238 41 mm over 40 years with presidents
My man looking like a James Bond villain jheeeeze ⌚️👀
TGV! Congrats on the new day date and enjoy it in good health! Also, I know you tend to prefer smaller watches but I must say that Daytona looks absolutely amazing on your wrist. My pick for an alternative is the Casio MTP-1381D-7AV. That one has a silver dial but it also comes in a couple different dial colors.
"But how am I supposed to grasp that ridiculous contraption of a controller with my perfectly normal, average sized hands?"
I have the Seiko SNK355, white dial. Very tastefully designed watch, with lots of little "5" shields in the dial - but quite discreetly i think.
I just got the Seiko snxs73 and I love it, such a nice watch for the money. Highly recommend it!
I actually just got myself my first "real" watch: the Bulova Surveyor 96C125 (the sunburst blue dial one that you show in the screen.) It's nothing too crazy, but I think a decent first venture into the watch world. Love the videos, and accent! (LOL)
Got a super Seville from 1987 absolutely love it
Though Sinn 104 is a tool watch in nature, and it’s just not on that dressy side as the pieces in this list. But somehow, speaking of day date complication, Sinn 104 is the first watch came to my mind next to the president. P.S. Congrats TGV, that’s a great update imo!
What not many know is that Tudor made a reissue of the old Prince Date+Day available from Tudor in Hong Kong and Japan. Brand new, but the same old design of the vintage ones. Using a VPN you can find it on Tudors website. It also has both date and day quickset.
ORIENT watches are very under-rated, they look and feel awesome!
i own one and i must say i prefer them to the much overated rolexes
I just bought the orient president on eBay. It’s a crowd-pleaser.
Just ordered a Hamilton Jazzmaster for an upcoming wedding can’t wait for it to turn up
Bond wore the 38.5mm AT8500 originally in Skyfall and then it continued into Spectre, though it was the upgraded model. He started off with a Planet Ocean 8500 at the beginning of Skyfall, then Moneypenny had to "take the bloody shot" that launched him over the bridge... now she has a desk job :)
Hi - If you could recommend a President Homage out of the Orient Star and the Bulova, which lne wiuld it be, and why. Which has the better movement. Thanks
Really happy about your choice, TGV. That linen dial is really special.
And we get Hugo for intro. What a great episode !
The black dial presidential platinum is my favorite. Add an Explorer 1, black Submariner date and that's my perfect 3 piece Rolex collection.
Great video! As always, I feel like I'm at school again, except this time, I'm actually paying attention to the teacher!
Bro, an episode on Royale Oak Homages would be super cool!!
The Snes street fighter intro. You are a true vintage lover. 😎
The Breitling Transocean is part of my collection. I truly enjoy wearing it.
I’ll say this, I own a Tudor 76200 with a black dial. I love it so much that I’m going to buy another one, 76213, two tone!
The perfect watch. :)
The Transocean is indeed something of a forgotten classic, so underrated.
I just ordered tudor 76200 whit white mosaic dial😍 can't wait to wear it
Great content as usual I dream of the day I can afford my own Rolex and my appreciation for these timepieces only continues to grow, thank you keep it up!
Thank you Joseph, one day you will, I know it.
Your positivity and manners in your comment already proves it, the Rolex of your dreams will be on your wrist before you know it.
Onwards and upwards!
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentry bro this reference day dare is my absolute dream watch. I'm 25 so still got long way to go. My preference is silver dial as it has the sunburst effect and stands out
Hugo's voices is the best
I really like my Hamtun Nanok day/date.
This man has a proper knowledge about watches, this is my 6th video... I’ve seen multiple things now that he could’ve easily said incorrectly about watches things that are rare and little known and he’s been right all along I love fellow watch enthusiasts I’m glad I found this channel (however) the most expensive watch I own is sadly $7 grand. (I’m 24)
Your videos, even more than most, encourage me to get a nice watch that pleases me, a nice cable knit sweater and go out ,enjoy , and rock my world. The dinosaur following me around you can keep.
Lived the intro with the retro games!
That was among the finest intros of all time
Proud Owner of the Hamilton Jazzmaster. Very Nice in Build and Price!
You classy chap,
Thank you Alan, keep being stylish my friend.
Best regards,
TGV
Hey TGV quick question do you know a good place online where I can buy a Real Phoenix NATO straps from?
I have Louis Erard Heritage Day Date with ETA, I really like my watch.
I do so enjoy TGV's videos - intelligent, witty, and informative. And I think that I've fallen completely in love with that Breitling Transocean ❤️
Splendid show. Love the Snes mini also. Pure nostalgia.
Just want to say thank you TGV I wanted to buy a watch for my 19th birthday and I didn’t know where to start. Thanks to your videos I got a SNKL41 and I’m loving it so far!
Doxa Noble is my candidate, the line has very interesting dial combinations.
Excellent video TGV. Have the Hamilton Jazzmaster Blue face and the Hamilton Khaki King Champagne dial. Both excellent Day Date alternatives on a budget. The Jazzmaster especially a sleeper - goes great with a suit. Keep up the splendid work!
I’m not a Breitling fan normally because they’re so busy, but that Transocean is phenomenal. Definitely something worth picking up.
Rocking a bit a streetwear with that stone island sweater!
My oh my the dear old Super Nintendo. So much good memories. Thanks for those alternatives TGV. It's really helpful. Thanks to you we can all have the feeling and the emotions you get when you look at your wrist and I think at the end of the day it is the most important. Thank you.
literally just watched a video of yours about rolex day date alternatives 😅 cheers
Haha, thank you!
Hopefully this list is a little more concise and in-depth.
Best regards,
TGV
Some nice watches there TGV and some epic input from Hugo 😂
P.S, I've now acquired a copy of the Meditations book thanks to your recommendation and I'm enjoying reading it 👍
Thank you and congrats on Meditations, I hope you continue to enjoy it and it helps you as much as it has me.
Onwards and upwards my friend!
Best regards,
TGV
Always enjoying your alternatives for people who can't or may not want to spend a great amount of money.
I also notice the superb video quality and editing skills!
(The second camera setting though does not tickle my fancy and takes away your usual style of video)
The Hamtun Nanok is a good budget Day Date alternative. Sellita 240-1 movement, 39mm,
Great video! Currently saving money to buy an aqua terra and add it to my collection.
What a humble nice guy! 👍
I just got a vintage gray dial/gold plated case, square-ish Nivada Compensamatic Antarctic in the mail. Considering that it's an icy, snowy, antarctic kind of day today, it's very appropriate.
I actually own the same Orient shown in this video with the champagne gold dial and love it.
Street fighter 2 turbo!!! One of the greatest. Great watch list as well👍
Great Vid TGV , I have the Orient president in all gold with a black dial and fully lumed arabic numerals with a red second hand , very unusual looking time piece to say the least and looks nothing like a Rolex president that's why I purchased that particular model , apart from the non hacking and non hand wind movement these pieces have a sapphire crystal , 100 m water resist and a screw down crown and it keeps very good time , the fit and Finnish and detail of the dial and case is exceptional for the price , the jubilee bracelet apart from the clasp is also exceptional for the price , all in all these wrist watches are incredible value for the money.
I like seeing the ‘Incabloc’ part of the Orient dial. This reminds me of the 1960s when as a teenage watch enthusiast l would gaze into jewellers windows, where at the time, every other watch would sport the Incabloc logo so that you were sure that your watch was shockproof.
Great choice on switching to the double quick set day-date by the way. Exceptional watch. Pure class, obviously 36mm version too.
